Tues June 28

I spent yesterday at the desk, in the morning working on the new edition of the Simple Bible New Testament (English edition ... mainly for prisoners).... and in the afternoon on many jobs for prisoners, with phone call from an Embassy in Beijing, calls from a barrister and prison welfare staff ... and an enjoyable visit to the Dr Jesus Centre by the consulate staff of a Latin American country dear to my heart.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Proverbs 15: A mild answer diffuses a tense situation. A sharp answer stirs up anger. A kind tongue is a source of life. A harsh tongue hurts other people's feelings. A happy heart produces a cheerful face. A sad heart means a drooping spirit. Hot-headed people provoke disputes. Peaceful people prevent disputes. Without deliberation, plans come to nothing. Successful plans need many counselors. A kindly glance gives joy to the heart. Good news gives strength to the bones.
Dear Lord, please give me a kind tongue

My recording of this reading

Psalms 140-143: Lord, save me from people who do evil, you who do justice for the needy. I have no way out of this situation. And no one wants to help me. Lord, I beg you tonight to make haste and give me an answer, for my spirit fails within me. In the morning let me know your love for I put my trust in you
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble

Listen

2 Peter 1.20- 3.18: We must be careful to understand Scripture according to God's mind. We are not free to make up our own interpretations as we like. In the past there were false prophets. So there will always be false prophets and teachers who twist the truth to suit their own tastes and corrupt behavior. They will have much to answer for when the Day of the Lord comes. Our brother Paul has written to you about this issue. Sometimes his writing is not easy to understand, and is distorted by false teachers. Avoid false teaching. Stand firm in the truth. Go on growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
To him be glory, in time and in eternity. Amen

Jesus,  protect me from people who distort the Bible message

Listen

Mark 11.15-19: When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, he went to the Temple. In the Temple there were money changers and people selling pigeons. Jesus tipped over their tables and drove them out of the Temple. He said to them "My house is a house of prayer for all the peoples of the world, but you have turned it into a place for robbery"
Jesus, protect all places of prayer from corruption

As the world's pro-abortion media attacks the US Supreme Court for reversing the Roe-Wade decision, Australia's tiniest baby (... the size of a can of Coke) is about to celebrate his 30th birthday. He was born at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane, where both mothers and babies are 100% important

Proverbs 13-14: Guard your talk and you will protect your life. People who talk too much, easily get into trouble. Choose wise people as your friends and you will be happy. Choose foolish people as friends and your problems will multiply. The heart knows its own grief best. No human person can fully understand another person's heart. A peaceful heart is necessary for good health. Envy is like a cancer in the bones. Injustice to the poor is an insult to our Creator. Kindness to the poor gives honor to our Creator. Virtue makes a nation great. Sin causes empires to fall.
Dear God, please help everyone in our country to be wise and kind and just

My recording of this reading

Psalm 139: O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding, too high, beyond my reach. It was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb. I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

Listen

2 Peter 1.12-18: As long as I am in this passing world, my duty is to keep on reminding you of the truths we hold dear. Writing this letter is one way of making sure that after my departure you will still have a way of recalling the truths we hold dear. These truths are not cleverly invented myths. I myself saw the majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was honored and glorified by God the Father, when the Sublime Glory himself spoke to him and said "This is my Son, the Beloved. He enjoys my favor". I heard this myself, spoken from heaven, when I was with Jesus on the holy mountain
Jesus, Beloved Son, may more and more people accept the truth of your Good News

Listen

Mark 11.1-11: Jesus sat on a donkey colt for the trip down the hill from the Mount of Olives into the city of Jerusalem. Big crowds accompanied Jesus down the hill. People spread their clothes on the road as a sign of honor. People cut branches from the trees and waved them singing "Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest!"
Jesus, may you be warmly welcomed  by every place and every person in the world

Sun June 26

Last Wednesday a kind employer whose domestic worker became Covid positive with many symptoms, registered her case on line as required by the law. They were told that a govt vehicle would take the sick woman to a govt quarantine station. That was Wednesday. Only on Friday did the vehicle arrive. When its observant driver noticed how sick the woman was he asked if she would like to go to hospital ... and she said yes. So she was left at the emergency section of Queen Mary Hospital, given an xray, and told to go to pharmacy to collect some medicine. She waited many hours at pharmacy until they closed at 10pm ... and was then told to go away ... without any medicine.

She could not go back to her employer's home because of the danger of infecting vulnerable people there. Eventually she phoned an NGO who phoned me .... at 12.15am yesterday. I got the woman to get a taxi and I told the driver where to go and that I would pay him (the woman had no money for a taxi). She arrived around 12.45am and I arranged a mattress for her at the Dr Jesus Centre (where 11 women once slept, 3 months ago). She could not go to one of our MercyHK hostels because the people there were all negative.

Around 9am yesterday morning our social worker Lucia moved the woman to one of our hostels (having moved its occupants to another of our hostels). On a separate note, not at all connected, two of our previous guests tested positive early yesterday morning, and they have joined the above woman in the positive hostel. Seems that the "6th wave" is spreading.

From this we have learnt that we need to keep one shelter dedicated to positive cases ....even if there have not been any recent cases .. .since using the Dr Jesus Centre means many problems (some appointments yesterday morning needed to be cancelled and yesterday afternoon's prayer meeting for cancer patients needed to be held on line .... and the centre needed disinfecting late yesterday afternoon).

c.f. readings for Sunday 13

1 Kings 19: Elijah once spent a night in a cave. The Lord then told him to stand at the mouth of the cave. Then there was a mighty wind that shattered trees and rocks. But the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake. But the  Lord was not in the earthquake. Then there was a gentle breeze. And the Lord was in the breeze. Not long after this Elijah called Elisha to become his follower.
Dear Lord, please help us be aware of your presence in our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.
Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day ....and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven

 Listen

Galatians 5.13-15: Serve one another in works of love, since the whole of the Law is summed up in the command "Love your neighbor as yourself". If you go in for non-stop criticism and personal attacks, you will destroy the church community
Jesus, help me avoid unfair/unnecessary criticism of other people

 Listen

Luke 9.51-58: When the time came for Jesus to finish his life on earth, he resolutely took the road to Jerusalem. As Jesus and his disciples traveled along, they met a man who said to him "I will follow you wherever you go". Jesus replied "Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but I have nowhere to lay my head"
Jesus, give me  courage to do what I should do

Reflection on the above readings:  Success in sport, study, music ...whatever ....means "blood, sweat and tears" ....so also, being a good Christian means effort/sacrifice/courage ... like that of Jesus going to Jerusalem

MercyHK's Lucia is possibly one of the busiest ladies in HK these days .... in fact, not just for the past few days but for the past few months! Proverbs 11-12: Pride comes before a fall. Humility brings wisdom. A city prospers when good people are many. A city falls when good people are few. Good people are kind to animals. Bad people are cruel to animals. Good people overlook insults.
Good people's speech promotes harmony in society. Worry makes our hearts heavy. Kindly words from others make us glad.

Lord, help me to be kind and wise

My recording of this reading

Psalm 138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though I walk in the midst of affliction you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your love, O Lord, is eternal. Do not abandon us whom you have made.
Lord, when we remember how much you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day
Listen

2 Peter 1.1-11: From Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to all who have faith through our God and Saviour Jesus Christ. May you have more and more grace and peace as you come to know our Lord more and more. By his divine power, he has given us all we need for life and faith. He has called us to share his divine nature in his eternal kingdom. So we must do our best to live lives of goodness, understanding, self-control, patience, a love for prayer, kindness and love
Dear Jesus, may I see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day

Listen

Luke 2.39-52 (for feast of Immaculate Heart of Mary)Joseph and Mary moved back to their own town of Nazareth. The child Jesus was filled with wisdom as he grew older. Each year  Joseph and Mary would take Jesus to Jerusalem for the celebration of the  Passover. When Jesus was 12 years old, they went to Jerusalem as usual. But when their traveling group left Jerusalem, Jesus stayed behind without his parents knowing it.  They presumed he was somewhere with the group. When they couldn't find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After 2 days, they found him,  in the Temple, listening to the religion teachers and asking them questions. People who heard him were astounded at his intelligence. His mother said to him "My child, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been really worried about you". Jesus replied "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that I must be concerned with my Father's work?"  But they didn't understand what he meant. He went with them to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother stored all these things in her heart
Jesus, please help all "lost children" to be found!

Readings from Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

2 Corinthians 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from "How Great Thou Art"
My recording of this reading

Ephesians 3.14-21: This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name: May he give you  power through his Spirit, for your hidden self to grow strong. May Christ live in your hearts through faith. Planted in love and built on love, may you continually focus on the love of Christ, until your life is filled with that love.
Glory be to him whose power  working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

Recording

Matthew 11.25-30: One day Jesus prayed: Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I am joyfully amazed at the way simple people understand and accept what I'm saying, while proud and clever people miss the plot. And he said to the ordinary people: Come to me, all you who are treated unfairly by unjust religious laws. I will give you peace and justice. Learn from me, and you will know peace, for I am gentle and humble of heart
Jesus, please help people who are suffering from unjust religious laws

Recording

John 19.31-37: The next day was the Passover. To prevent the bodies remaining on the crosses during the Passover, the soldiers broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead. Instead of breaking his legs, they pierced his side with a spear.  Immediately there came out blood and water. And so the Scriptures were fulfilled "Not one of his bones will be broken" and "They will look on the one they have pierced".
Jesus, please help me understand how blood and water are symbols of the Eucharist and Baptism

A busy day at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan yesterday: (1) the usual morning staff meeting, (2) the usual afternoon gathering for Chinese drug addicts, (3) the usual evening gathering for Nepalese drug addicts. One aim of the meetings for drug addicts is to encourage them to voluntarily spend extended time at a drug treatment centre .... and, thank you Jesus .... over the past few months our social workers have helped quite a few drug addicts to do so.

Birthday of John the Baptist (usually June 24, but today because tomorrow is Feast of Sacred Heart of Jesus)

Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord  said to me: 'I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth'. The Lord also says to his people: "Does a woman forget her baby, or a mother the child within her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you".
Lord, please help me understand how you loved me even before I was born.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 139: O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

Acts 13: Paul said: God deposed Saul and made David their king, of whom he approved in these words, "I have selected David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will carry out my whole purpose." To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. Before John ended his career he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal." "My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and all you who fear God, this message of salvation is meant for you.

Luke 1.67-80: When John was named, his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and said "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel. He has visited his people. And you, little child, you shall be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him". When John grew older, he lived in the wilderness until the time came for him to begin his ministry.
Jesus, please help me prepare your way by helping people to know you

Reflection on the above readings: Why June 24 for John the Baptist? Because Jesus was conceived in the 6th month of Elizabeth's pregnancy .... so John was born 6 months (approximately) before Jesus ... and 6 months before Dec 25 is June 24. Let's think of the baby baptist if we happen to see any babies today!

Yesterday I went with 12 domestic helpers who are staying at MercyHK hostels, for a hike to Lantau Island. We walked from Jordan to the Star Ferry through beautiful Kowloon Park (which most of them had never visited), then got Star Ferry to Central, then got ferry to Discovery Bay (which most of them had never been to), then walked to the Trappist Monastery (again a first for most of them), then walked (a first for all of them) to Mui Wo, then got ferry back to Central and MTR to Jordan. Many thanks to Virgie and Jackey, volunteers at the monastery, and Fr Chow, for kind help at lunch time, and many thanks to Fr Anthony and friends at Epiphany Church, Mui Wo for lovely drink at the end of a hot day. And thank you Jesus for perfect hiking weather: no sun, no rain ... and a lovely breeze!

Proverbs 10: A wise child is a father's joy. A foolish child is a mother's sorrow. Laziness leads to poverty. Diligence leads to success. Hatred provokes disputes. Love covers over all offences. A flood of words is never without fault. Prudent people control their lips.
Lord, may my words be wise and loving

My recording of this reading

Psalm 137: By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs. "Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs". O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. O let my tongue cleave to my mouth if I remember you not, Jerusalem, above all my joys.
Lord, please help people who have been exiled from their homeland
Listen

1 Peter 5.5-14: To everyone else I say: do what the elders tell you. Wrap yourselves in humility to be servants of each other.
God refuses the proud and favors the humble. Bow down before the power of God, and he will raise you up. Unload all your worries on to him, since he is looking after you. Be calm, but careful, because your enemy the Devil is prowling round like a roaring lion, looking for someone to eat. Stand up to him, strong in faith. Peace to all who are in Christ

Jesus, please protect me from Satan

Listen

Mark 10.46-52: As Jesus was leaving Jericho on his way to Jerusalem, many people followed him along the road. Sitting by the road was a man  who had become blind. His name was Bartimaeus ("son of Timaeus"). When he heard that Jesus was going past, he called out "Son of David, have pity on me". Some people tried to stop him from calling out, but he shouted even more loudly "Son of David, have pity on me". Jesus stopped and said to him "What do you want me to do for you?" He replied "Lord, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Go, your faith has saved you". Immediately his sight returned, and he followed Jesus along the road
Jesus, please heal my blind friend (.. name ..)
