Tues July 5
I
know of a court case that was supposed to have been held today but has been
postponed till next week because the judge is in .... quarantine! Not sure if he
is allowed to apply for a reduction of sentence ... or bail!
While doing a recording last night for the English page of today's Ming Pao
newspaper (the Editorial) I learnt that Guangzhou now has 38 universities! I
tried to check how many McDonald's in Guangzhou, but could find only this:
In 2020, China had the greatest number of McDonald's
restaurants throughout the Asia Pacific and Middle East with approximately 3.79
thousand stores, followed by Japan with about 2.9 thousand stores and
Australia with 1007 stores. Worldwide, there were around 39.2 thousand
McDonald's restaurants in that year.

Proverbs
23-24: If someone invites you for a meal,
be careful not to make a pig of yourself. Don't waste your breath talking
to foolish people. Make sure your children receive a
wholesome discipline. Don't be a drunkard.
Don't be a glutton.
Avoid prostitution. Brains are better than brawn. If you make a big mistake and
fall, get up and start again.

recording of this reading

Psalm
148: Praise the Lord from the heavens,
praise him in the heights. Praise him all his angels,
praise him all his spirits. Praise him, sun and moon,
praise him, shining stars. Let them praise the name of the Lord.
His word gave life to all of them. Praise the Lord from the earth,
sea creatures and all oceans. Praise him fire and hail, snow and mist,
stormy winds that obey his word. Praise him all mountains and hills,
all fruit trees and cedars.
Praise him all animals, wild and tame,
reptiles and birds in the air. Praise him all earth's kings and peoples,
earth's princes and rulers. Praise him young men and maidens,
old people together with children. Let them praise the name of the
Lord.
He is the praise of all who love him.
Lord our God and Creator, you
are worthy of all praise

John 3.1-3: Think of the love that the Father has lavished
on us
by letting us be called God's children.
And God's love has even more in store for us in the future:
we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. This is why we must try to live good lives.
We must try to be as good as Christ
Jesus, please help me be more like you

Mark
14.1-11:
Two days before the Passover festival,
the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him
put to death. During these days Jesus had a
meal at the home of Simon the leper.
At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus'
head.
The woman understood that Jesus was soon to die. One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas
Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest
Jesus at a convenient time.
The leaders promised to give Judas money.
Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest
Jesus, forgive me for
the times when I have not been faithful to you and your teaching

Psalm 6:
Proverbs 19-22 Where reflection is wanting, zeal is not
good.
People who go too quickly miss their way. Whoever is kind to the poor is kind to the
Lord.
The Lord will repay such kindness. Children at play
show what sort of people they will be in the future. Better the corner of a loft to live in
than a house shared with a scolding spouse. Better to live in a desert land
than with a scolding and irritable spouse. Instruct children in goodness and justice
and they will always be good adults.
Lord, please help me put
into practice the ideas in these words
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
147: Praise the Lord for he is good.
Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due. The Lord builds up Jerusalem
and brings back Israel's exiles. He heals the broken-hearted
and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises the lowly
and humbles the wicked. He fixes the number of the stars.
He calls each one by name. Our Lord is great and almighty.
His wisdom can never be measured. He covers the heavens with clouds.
He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass
and with plants to serve our needs. His delight is not in horses
nor his pleasure in warriors' strength. The Lord delights in those who love and honor
him,
in those who wait for his love.
It is right and fitting to
praise and love you, Lord our Creator

but hates his brother
is still in the dark. Do not love the ungodly values of this world
generated by the sensual body,
the lustful eye
and a pride in
possessions. Such things do not come from God
Jesus, please help me avoid worldly values
Listen

Mark
13.1-37: Jesus spoke to his disciples about the future:
"On account of my name you will be hated, tortured and killed.
But the Good News of the kingdom will spread to every nation
before the end of the world. At the end of the world, the sun
and moon will stop shining.
Stars will fall from the sky. Then the sign of the Son of Man
will appear in the sky
and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds
with power and glory.
He will send his angels with a loud trumpet
to gather good people from all parts of the earth. Therefore you should
live a good life
and you will have nothing to fear on your last day"
Jesus, please help me live and

praise you, O God.
Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice

Galatians
6.14-18: As
for me, the
only thing I boast about is the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through
whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. It does not matter if a
person is circumcised or not. What matters is that we become a new creature.
From now on, I want no more trouble from you. The scars on my body were suffered
for the sake of Jesus. May his grace be with you
Jesus, may I look at everything in the world from up on your Cross

'The kingdom of God is very near to you'".

Proverbs
18:
Foolish people are not interested in reflection,
but only in airing their own opinion. The human heart is haughty until disaster
strikes.
Humility goes before honor. Don't reply to someone until you've listened

Psalm
146: My soul, give
praise to the Lord.
I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in
princes,
in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they
return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are
helped by Jacob's God,
whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven
and earth,
the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives
bread to the hungry,
the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who
gives sight to the blind,
who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who
protects the stranger
and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who
loves the just
but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for
ever,
Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust

145: I will give you glory, O God my king.
I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works,

slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord,

Proverbs 16: A person proposes, God disposes.
Ask the Lord to bless all your plans. Kindness and loyalty make up for sin.
Love of the Lord brings avoidance of evil. If the Lord is pleased with your way of life,
he will cause your enemies to become your friends. Pride goes before destruction,
a haughty spirit before a fall. A troublemaker sows strife.
A talebearer separates friends. Better to be a peaceful person than a
hero.
Better to be master of yourself than the conqueror of a city.

c.f. readings for Feast of Peter & Paul
Acts
12.1-17: About this time,
King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother
of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and
planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was
in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he
was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with
chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was
filled with light, and an
angel told him to get up. The
chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison,
without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another
place. Herod was unable to find him.
Jesus, please help Christians who are in prison for their faith

Psalm
34: I will bless the Lord at
all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its
boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let
us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he
set me free. The
angel of the Lord is
encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that
the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to

2 Timothy 4.6-8: As for me,

best of all prizes: eternal life in heaven. He will give it not only to me,

Matthew
16.13-20: One day Jesus asked
his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples
replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus
then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say
I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God". Jesus
then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed
this to you. So I now say to you: you are Peter ('the rock') and on this
rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom."
Jesus, Son of God, please help the church to continue your work on
