Ecclesiastes 4-5: So many things we do are motivated by jealousy. Two people working together can succeed. One person alone is easily defeated. It is better to be content with what you have, than to be greedy for wealth
Lord, please help me not to be greedy

My recording of this reading

Psalm 5: At the start of this day I pray to you, O Lord, my King and my God. I offer you my prayer and ask for your help. Through the greatness of your love, I have access to your friendship.  I bow down in reverence and worship. Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go. It is you, Lord, who bless good people. You surround them with favors, as with a shield.
Lord, I adore you as my Creator

Listen

Revelation 1.4-8: From John, to the seven churches of Asia province: grace and peace to you from him who is, who was, and who is to come, from the seven spirits at his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the First-born from the dead,
the Ruler of the kings of the earth. Jesus Christ loves us and has washed away our sins with his blood, and made us a line of kings and priests to serve his God and Father. It is he who will come on the clouds. Everyone, in every part of the world, will see him. All hearts will be moved by his coming. "I am the beginning and the end", says the Lord God. "I am the originator and goal of all things"

Jesus, please help more and more people know who you are

Mark 15.16-20: After the Roman soldiers scourged Jesus, they made fun of him. They put a purple cloak on him. They made a crown out of thorns and put it on his head. They knelt in front of him and mocked him saying "Hail, king of the Jews".  They hit his head with a reed, and spat on him. When they had finished making fun of him, they dressed him  in his own clothes and led him away to crucify him
Jesus, please don't let me hurt other people by making fun of them

Ecclesiastes 3: There's a time and a season for everything: A time for giving birth, a time for dying. A time for tears and mourning, a time for laughter and dancing. A time for embracing, a time to refrain from embracing. A time for keeping silent,
a time for speaking.

Dear Lord, please help me to do the right thing at the right time

My recording of this reading

Psalm 4: At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you will keep on chasing false goals? Lord, you have put into my heart a joy that cannot be obtained by big meals and plenty of wine. I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety and peace
Thank you, Lord, for your love and help right through today

Listen

Jude: From Jude, servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are dear to God the Father and kept safe, wishing you mercy and peace and love. I write with urgency to appeal to you: stand up for the faith that has been entrusted to us. Some false teachers have infiltrated our ranks. They reject the teaching of our Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. They say "anything goes" in the area of morality. Such teaching, such people, must be opposed. Be kind to such people, but with great caution. To God who saves us through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory and all honor, now and forever
Jesus, please protect your church from false teachers

Mark 15.1-15: Early in the morning, the religious leaders had Jesus bound with ropes. They took him to Pilate, the Roman governor The leaders accused Jesus of many crimes. To the governor's amazement, Jesus remained silent. The leaders persuaded the crowd to demand the execution of Jesus. They called out to Pilate "Crucify him". Pilate asked "Why? What has he done wrong?" The crowd shouted all the louder "Crucify him. Crucify him". Giving in to the crowd, Pilate then ordered Jesus to be scourged and crucified
Jesus, help people who are condemned to death

c.f. readings for Sunday 15

Deuteronomy 29-30: Moses called the whole of Israel together and said to them: "Keep the words of this covenant and observe them and you will thrive in all you do. Let there be no man or woman among you, no clan or tribe, whose heart turns away from the Lord your God to go and serve the gods of the nations. If ever you are scattered from the land God is giving you, God will bring you back when your hearts turn back to him. The Lord will circumcise your hearts until you love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul. This law I enjoin on you today is not beyond your strength or beyond your reach. It is not in heaven, so that you need to wonder 'who will go up to heaven for us and bring it down to us so that we may hear it and keep it?' Nor is it beyond the seas, so that you need to wonder 'who will cross the sea for us and bring it back to us, so that we may hear it and keep it?' No, the Word is very near to you. It is in your mouth and in your heart for your observance.
Dear Lord, please help more and more people to choose life and blessings...and not to turn their backs on you

Psalms 66-68: O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God.
Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. God gives his people strength.

May all the peoples of the earth know you and praise you, O God

Colossians 1.15-20: Christ is the image of the unseen God. In him were created all things. All things were created through him and for him. Before anything was created, he existed. He holds all things in unity. The Church is his body. He is its head. God wants all things to be reconciled through him who brought peace by his death on the Cross.
Jesus, God the Son become man, may our world find reconciliation and peace in you

Luke 10.29-37: The religious leader then asked another question: "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied "A man on a journey was attacked by robbers. They beat him, took all he had, and left him seriously injured. A priest came by and saw the man, but did not help him. A temple worker also saw him, but did not help.  But a lowly foreigner who saw him was moved with pity. The foreigner bandaged his wounds, and used his own donkey to take the man to an inn. He paid the innkeeper to look after the man. Which of the three was a neighbor to the injured man?" The leader replied "The one who helped him". Jesus then said "Go, and do the same"
Jesus, please don't let me ignore people who need help

Ecclesiastes 1-2: Everything is temporary and passing. What's the use of all our toil? Our life is over in a few days. What's the use of all our toil? The same fate awaits both wise person and fool. Death is always just around the corner.
Dear God, please help me understand the meaning of life. Help me understand that there is life in heaven after life on earth

My recording of this reading

Psalm 3: When people make fun of me for believing in you, Lord, I deeply remember how you are my help and my shield. Even when the whole world seems against me, I can go to bed and sleep easy, knowing that you protect me. O Lord, please rescue me from people who plot against me. Lord our savior, please bless everyone who needs help.
Lord, thank you for your protection and help

Mark 14.66-72Peter went to the place where the religious leaders had Jesus on trial. A young woman in the courtyard of the place said to him "You were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth". Peter replied "I don't know what you're talking about". Peter went to the gateway of the place, where the woman saw him again and said to people around her "This man is one of them".
Peter denied it. Not long after this a group of people said to Peter "You are his friend. We can tell by your Galilean accent".
Then Peter even more strongly replied "I do not know the man". At that very moment, a rooster crowed. Peter remembered Jesus' words "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". Peter then wept loudly

Jesus, please help me not to deny you. Give me courage to say "I am a Christian"

Listen

Reflection: Peter had run away when Jesus was arrested, then had the courage to go to the courtyard ... but then denied his Master. This internal conflict surfaced again when out of human respect he did not want to eat with gentiles in the presence of James' friends. May Peter in Heaven pray for us to have more courage!

Proverbs 30-31: Every word of God is true and of great value. Do not change or misinterpret God's words. Do not give way to sexual excess. Do not give way to drunkenness. Be the voice of the poor, the unwanted. Uphold the rights of the needy. Happy the man who finds a good wife. She is far beyond the price of pearls. She looks after her household with care. She works diligently for her family. She holds out her hand to the poor. She opens her arms to the needy. Charm is deceitful, and beauty empty. The woman who is wise is the one to praise.
Lord, thank you for all the wisdom in the Book of Proverbs!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 2: Why are the nations revolting against God? Why won't the nations accept God? O kings and rulers of the nations, listen to God's voice. Serve the Lord with love and honor. Blessed are the nations that love the Lord
Let all the nations love you, Lord. Let all the nations love you

2 Peter 1.1-11: From Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to all who have faith through our God and Saviour Jesus Christ. May you have more and more grace and peace as you come to know our Lord more and more. By his divine power, he has given us all we need for life and faith. He has called us to share his divine nature in his eternal kingdom. So we must do our best to live lives of goodness, understanding, self-control, patience, a love for prayer, kindness and love
Dear Jesus, may I see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day

Listen

Mark 14.43-52: While Jesus was still speaking, Judas arrived. Judas had with him a large crowd of men with swords and clubs,
sent by the religious leaders. Judas had told these men "The one I kiss is the man. Take him". So Judas went to Jesus and said  "Teacher" and kissed him. The men  then seized Jesus. Jesus said to them "Am I a robber that you needed to capture me with swords and clubs?  Day after day I was openly teaching in the Temple". All the apostles then deserted him and ran away

Jesus, when I am being treated unfairly by other people, please give me strength

Two days ago a reforming drug addict asked MercyHK's social worker Simon for help to find a job. Simon found him a part-time job immediately and he started work yesterday morning, washing dishes in a canteen. In the evening, at the usual Wed gathering for Nepal drug addicts, we watched part of this powerful drug documentary ... which describes Fentanyl ... an opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin

Proverbs 27-29: Do not boast about tomorrow, since you do not know what will happen today. Let others praise you, but do not praise yourself. Better open reproof than voiceless love. From one who loves, wounds are well-intentioned. From one who hates, kisses are ominous. He who admits his faults will prosper. He who confesses and renounces his faults will find mercy. A roaring lion, a hungry bear, such is a bad ruler of a poor people.
Lord, please help me practise the ideas in these words

My recording of this reading

Psalm 1: Happy the person who avoids evil and evil entertainment. Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words. Such a person is like a tree planted beside a river, getting plenty of nourishment, bearing plenty of fruit. Such a person is on the Way of Life. People who do evil are on the Way of Death.

1 John 4.7-16: Let us love one another. Love comes from God. God is love. God showed his love for us by sending his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Since God has loved us so much we should love one another. God is love. Anyone who lives in love, lives in God, and God lives in him
Jesus, you are love itself. May I live in your love

Mark 14.26-42: After the meal, Jesus said to his apostles "Tonight all of you will desert me". Peter said "I will never desert you". Jesus replied "Tonight before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". They came to a place with olive trees called Gethsemane. Jesus asked Peter, James and John to pray with him. Jesus was overcome with sadness and fear. He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is dying. Please support me as I pray". Then he fell on his face and prayed for about an hour: "Father, don't let this suffering continue. But your will be done". He stood up and found that the apostles were asleep. He said to them "Couldn't you stay awake one hour to support me?" Three times he prayed the same way. Three times the apostles went to sleep. Then he said "Get ready. The one who is betraying me is coming"
Jesus, please help me give more time to prayer

Yesterday I went with a group of domestic helpers for whom MercyHK is providing accommodation, to Cheung Chau Island where, after lunch at the Salesian canteen and a visit to the local church, we walked along the beach on one side of the island, then along the waterfront on the other side .... to MercyHK's men's shelter which will soon close down .... so we did a bit of cleaning up ... and brought back some of the centre's items to Jordan for use in other centres. Once again, as on previous hikes ... perfect weather ... no sun and only a few minutes rain. Thank you Jesus!

Proverbs 25-26: Cloud and wind, but no rain. Such is the person who makes a lot of promises but doesn't keep them. Don't over-tax your neighbor's hospitality. If people who don't like you are hungry or thirsty, give them something to eat or drink. In this way you will shame them into being better people. Rain comes by the north wind. A ravaged face comes from a backbiting tongue. An open town, without defences. Such is a person lacking self-control. As a dog returns to its vomit, so foolish people return to their folly. Interfering in the quarrels of other people is like catching a stray dog by the tail. No wood, and the fire goes out. No talebearer, and quarrelling dies down
Lord, please stop me from being  critical of other people

My recording of this reading

Psalms 149-150: Sing a new song to the Lord. Let the praise of God be always on our lips. Praise God in his holy temple.
Praise him in the heavens. O praise him with sound of trumpet. Praise him with lute and harp. Praise him with drums and dancing. Praise him with strings and pipes. Let everything that lives and breathes, give praise to the Lord our Creator.  Alleluia!

Lord, to you we say every day "Allelu-ia" ("praise God")

Listen

1 John 3.16-21: This has taught us love: that Jesus gave up his life for us. We too should give up our lives for others. If you see someone in need and refuse to help him, how can the love of God be in you? Our love must be put into practice, not be just words. Anyone who loves God must also love other people
Jesus, help me put my love into practice by helping people in need

Listen

Mark 14.17-25: On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with his apostles. While they were eating, Jesus told them he knew he would be betrayed by one of them. He told Judas he knew he was the betrayer. Then Jesus took some bread, blessed it and gave it to his apostles saying " This is my body". Then he took a cup of wine, blessed it and gave it to them saying "This is my blood"
Jesus, please help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

While doing a recording last night for the English page of today's Ming Pao newspaper (the Editorial) I learnt that Guangzhou now has 38 universities! I tried to check how many McDonald's in Guangzhou, but could find only this:
In 2020, China had the greatest number of McDonald's restaurants throughout the Asia Pacific and Middle East with approximately 3.79 thousand stores, followed by Japan with about 2.9 thousand stores and Australia with 1007 stores. Worldwide, there were around 39.2 thousand McDonald's restaurants in that year.

Proverbs 23-24: If someone invites you for a meal, be careful not to make a pig of yourself. Don't waste your breath talking to foolish people. Make sure your children receive a wholesome discipline. Don't be a drunkard. Don't be a glutton. Avoid prostitution. Brains are better than brawn. If you make a big mistake and fall, get up and start again.
Lord, please help me put into practice the ideas in these words

My recording of this reading

Psalm 148: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights. Praise him all his angels, praise him all his spirits. Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, shining stars. Let them praise the name of the Lord. His word gave life to all of them. Praise the Lord from the earth, sea creatures and all oceans. Praise him fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy winds that obey his word. Praise him all mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars. Praise him all animals, wild and tame, reptiles and birds in the air. Praise him all earth's kings and peoples, earth's princes and rulers. Praise him young men and maidens, old people together with children. Let them praise the name of the Lord. He is the praise of all who love him.
Lord our God and Creator, you are worthy of all praise

1 John 3.1-3: Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us by letting us be called God's children. And God's love has even more in store for us in the future: we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. This is why we must try to live good lives. We must try to be as good as Christ
Jesus, please help me be more like you

Mark 14.1-11: Two days before the Passover festival, the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him put to death. During these days Jesus had a meal at the home of Simon the leper. At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus' head. The woman understood that Jesus was soon to die. One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest Jesus at a convenient time. The leaders promised to give Judas money. Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest
Jesus, forgive me for the times when I have not been faithful  to you and your teaching
