Tues July 19

Over the past week MercyHK social work Simon has spent much time going with an elderly local homeless man (who sleeps at the Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui ... and is not a drug addict) for medical appointments to a kind local doctor who provides pro bono help for needy people.

I spent most of yesterday at the desk, one job being to produce combined PDF files of the Simple Bible: Old Testament (English) ... now here!

Cameron Smith (a fellow-Queenslander!) won the British Open Golf Tournament at the weekend. In some reports he tells how failure last year spurred him to work harder for success this year. His improvement is an encouraging lesson as we "try to do better".

Song 5:
The bride:
I sleep, but my heart is awake.
I hear my beloved knocking.

I open my door, but he is gone.
I search for him, but cannot find him.

Lord, please help me search for you until I find you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever. Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day ....and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven.
Listen

Revelation 3.1-3: He gave me this message for the church in Sardis: "I know all about you. You are a shining red apple on the outside, but inside you are rotten. Wake up, revive your faith and love. Remember the eagerness you showed when you first heard the Good News. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, don't ever let me become a rotten apple

Listen

Luke 1.1-4: Dear Friend of God, there are  already many  reports written about Jesus. These reports come from  people who were the earliest eyewitnesses and ministers of the Good News. After checking the whole story, I also have decided to write a report, so that you may see for yourself the truth and accuracy of the Good News
Jesus, help me understand your Good News

Listen

Reflection: As we continue to faithfully read the Bible each day, it's truth and accuracy becomes clearer to us ... and more deeply influences our lives

Mon July 18

Last night MercyHK was providing accommodation for about 40 local people, 18 foreign domestic helpers and 5 children under 3 years old. We are also providing a free daily meal at a local canteen for more than 100 needy people ... including a number of people who "sleep on the street".

The MTR is kindly arranging an activity for about 2 dozen of our needy people .... this Thursday afternoon

Song of Songs 3-4:
The bride:
On my bed at night,
I sought him whom my heart loves.

The groom:
How beautiful you are, my love.
You are wholly beautiful, my love,
and without blemish.

Lord, please help me understand how much you love me

My recording of this reading

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should.
Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.

Lord, help us to stand firm in the way of goodness

Revelation 2.18-22He gave me this message for the church in Thyatira: "I know how charitable you are. I see your faith and devotion, and your courage in suffering. But some of you are being misled by a false teacher. You are imitating her bad behavior. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, please don't let me imitate bad behavior

Mark 16.9-20: After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had cast out 7 devils. Next  he appeared to two of his disciples while they were on a journey. Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all creation. Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved.
Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils, they will have the gift of tongues, they will pick up snakes in their hands, they will be unharmed if they drink poison, they will lay their hands on the sick, who will be healed". And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming their message by the miracles that accompanied the message

Lord Jesus, may more and more people all over the world believe in you

c.f. readings for Sunday 16

Genesis 18: One day at Mamre, God and two angels appeared to Abraham. At first, God and the angels looked like men.
Following the ancient custom of hospitality Abraham prepared a feast for them. God told Abraham that the town of Sodom was going to be destroyed because of the evil done there. Abraham pleaded with God not to destroy Sodom. God agreed to postpone Sodom's destruction for a while.

Dear God, please help people avoid sodomy

My recording of this reading

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should. Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others
Lord, help us to stand firm in the way of goodness

 Listen

Colossians 1.24 - 2.2: As I sit in my prison, I am at peace in my suffering, offering up my suffering to Christ for the sake of his body, the Church. God chose me to reveal to you his sacred message: Christ, your hope of glory,  is among you. My aim is to bind you together in love, and to keep you growing in your knowledge of God's plan for your lives.
"Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, With cords that cannot be broken, Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, Bind us together in Love"
  (song)

Luke 10.38-42: Jesus one day visited the home of Martha and her sister Mary. Mary sat and listened to Jesus. Martha complained that Mary was not helping her with the serving. Jesus said "Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about so many things. Mary has chosen the one thing that matters".
Jesus, please help me listen like Mary

Sat July 16

Two nights ago, MercyHK social worker Lucia was called out at 10.30 to receive a newly homeless domestic helper .... followed by another one at 11.30 (a Covid positive case) ... followed by another one at 2.30am! God bless Lucia for her dedication to helping such urgent cases!

At yesterday afternoon's weekly gathering for homeless people at the Dr Jesus Centre there were lovely meal gifts from members of a local Evangelical church .... before which we read the story of the Good Samaritan and then watched Bishop Joseph Ha's video commentary on the same. After reflecting so much about the concern we should have for our neighbour I showed something slightly off the topic (we usually have a time for something lighter) ... in fact the opposite of loving your neighbour .... video highlights of last Wednesday's victory by my home state of Queensland over arch rivals New South Wales in the final of this year's State of Origin series!

Urgent! One of the homeless domestic helpers who has been staying at a MercyHK hostel is allowed to remain in HK if she can find a new employer before next Tuesday, July 19. Otherwise she must return to the Philippines where her fatherless children are dependent on her income from HK for support. Song of Songs 1-2: The bride says: Kiss me. Your love is better than wine. How right it is to love you, you whom my heart loves.
The bridegroom says:
How beautiful you are, my love, how beautiful you are.

The bride:
He has taken me to his banquet hall
and his banner over me is love.

The groom:
Come then, my love, my lovely one, come.
Show me your face and let me hear your voice,
for your voice is sweet and your face is beautiful.

The bride:
My beloved is mine and I am his.

Dear God, please give me a lover's love for you
My recording of this reading

Psalms 9-13: I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart. You have so often rescued me from trouble. Thank you! You are the best helper for people in trouble. Please keep on helping me when troubles come. Please stop bad people from hurting others.
Please let peoples in all countries know they must avoid evil and live a life of justice.

Dear Lord, thank you for so often rescuing me

Listen

Revelation 2.12-16: He gave me this message for the church in Pergamum: "I know you live in a place where idol worship is strong. I know you have stayed faithful, even after one of you was killed. But some of you have compromised yourselves by eating food sacrificed to idols. And some of you have followed false teachers. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, don't let me ever compromise my faith

Listen

Mark 16.1-8: Jesus died on Friday afternoon. Early on Sunday morning, Mary of Magdala and two other women went to Jesus' tomb to anoint his body with spices. They had been wondering how they would roll away the large stone,  but when they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away. When they went into the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe and they were full of awe. But he said to them  "Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He has risen from the dead. Go and tell his disciples he  will see them in Galilee".
Jesus, when life seems hopeless, like a dead body in a tomb, please help us remember how you rose from the dead....and you can help us "rise" from any "hopeless" situation

Early yesterday afternoon I went to the Chinese University office in Admiralty to enrol many prisoners for correspondence courses. God bless the kind friends who help sponsor these courses!

Also yesterday afternoon at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan, MercyHK social workers, assisted by a team from the Anglican Church, ran an art therapy cell group for drug addicts ... which marvellously engaged the addicts' attention!

This is very sad .... Court of Appeal judgement ....increased by 2 years the sentence of a young mother from Brazil for drug trafficking charge. The judgement several times mentions my anti-drug campaign.

Ecclesiastes 10-11: Foolish people are lazy,  and careless in speech. Wise people are diligent, and careful in speech. Young people, rejoice in your youth. Young people, remember your Creator in the days of your youth. Let everyone remember: our life is short. Don't waste your life. Live life well. Our days pass quickly and old age is soon at the doorstep. Old age: when to go uphill is difficult and even walking is not easy. In all we do, let us love and honor the Lord our God. At the end of our lives on earth, it is to God we will have to give an account of the way we have lived.
Lord, make us know the shortness of our life so that we may have more wisdom in living our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalm 8: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands,
the moon and stars which you have arranged, then I stop and think: what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world. Everything is subject to our control.

How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

Listen

Revelation 2.8-10: He gave me this message for the church in Smyrna: "I know the trials you have been through, and how poor you are, and the slanderous attacks that have been made on you. Do not be afraid of suffering, afraid of prison. Even if you have to die, keep faithful, and I will give you the prize of eternal life"
Jesus, help me stay faithful when I experience trials and suffering

Mark 15.42-47: Joseph from Arimathaea was a rich man who had become a disciple of Jesus. After Jesus died on Friday, he asked Governor Pilate for Jesus' body. Joseph wrapped the body in a clean burial cloth and put it in a tomb in a rock cave. He then put a large stone at the cave's entrance. Mary of Magdala and another woman watched Joseph as he put Jesus' body in the tomb
Jesus in the tomb, please give eternal life to everyone who dies today

Please God in the next week or so the Old Testament, in Chinese and English, will also be online.

Copies of the new English NT were given to 7 Nepal men who attended last night's gathering for English speaking drug addicts (at which we enjoyed a McDonald's meal .... with social workers Simon, Patrick and Raymond deciding to have McDs onee a month from now on!). Copies of the Chinese NT have also been made available to the dozen or so friends who attended yesterday afternoon's gathering for Chinese drug addicts.

Ecclesiastes 8-9: I see injustice in the world: good people are treated badly; bad people are treated well. I do know, however,
that good people are in the special care of God. We must try to be happy as much as we can. We must try to make the most of our lives. Spend your life with the woman you love. Whatever work you have to do, do it well.

Lord, please help me to be optimistic and cheerful

My recording of this reading

Psalm 7: Lord God, I take refuge in you. Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things. Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.
Lord, please help me to avoid evil and to do good

Revelation 2.1-4: The Son of Man gave me this message for the church in Ephesus: "I know all about you. I know how much you have suffered for me. But your love has grown cold. Repent, and revive your original love"

Mark 15.33-39: Jesus was put on the cross sometime after 9am. From about noon until 3pm there was darkness over all the land. About 3pm Jesus cried out the words of Psalm 22 "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" A little while later he again cried out in a loud voice. Then he died. At that moment the holy curtain in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The leader of the Roman soldiers who crucified Jesus, when he saw how Jesus died, said "Truly this man was a son of God"
Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

Ecclesiastes 6-7: Even if a person studies wisdom, what use is it? Wise person and fool both must die. Yet wisdom gives protection and strength. And wisdom reminds us that all of us make mistakes. Therefore we should be slow to condemn others.
Lord, may the memory of my own mistakes make me slow to judge other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 6: Have mercy on me, Lord, I have no strength. My body is racked with pain. Please heal me, Lord. I am exhausted with my groaning. Every night  my pillow is covered  with tears. Lord, please hear my prayer.

Revelation 1.9-17I, John, share your sufferings. I was on the island of Patmos, imprisoned for having preached about Jesus. One Sunday the Spirit possessed me. I heard a voice shouting "Write down all you see, and send it to the seven churches of
Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea". I turned to see who had spoken to me, and I saw Jesus, full of glory. His face was like the sun shining with all its force. He said to me "Do not be afraid. It is I, the First and the Last. I am the Living One".

Jesus, Living One, we praise and adore you, Lord

Mark 15.21-32: As Jesus was taken to the place of crucifixion, a man named Simon, from Cyrene, was made to carry Jesus' cross. Sometime after 9am, Jesus was nailed to the cross. Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Above Jesus' head was a sign with the charge against him. The sign said "The King of the Jews". People passing by that place made fun of Jesus. So did the religious leaders. They mocked and taunted him.
