JESUS, PLEASE BLESS POPE FRANCIS IN CANADA TODAY ON HIS "PILGRIMAGE OF PENANCE".

Today is also the Feast of Saint Anne, grandmother of Jesus, a patron of Canada! Today there will be big crowds at the famous Basilica of St Anne de Beaupre (which I had the privilege of visiting in 1982 - a postcard))

A great program - will produce spoken message in any language! e.g. type in English, it will speak Cantonese!

c.f. readings for Saints Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus

Sirach 44-50: It is good to remember the famous people in history who had a special love for God. Remembering their faith and their love for God will give us courage for our daily lives. They were human and made mistakes, yet they persevered in serving the Lord. People like Abraham, Moses, David. Let us try to imitate their faith and courage.
Lord, please give me courage to live each day as I should

My recording of this reading

Psalm 132:

The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
The Lord swore an oath to David;
he will not go back on this word:
‘A son, the fruit of your body,
will I set upon your throne.’
The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
For the Lord has chosen Zion;
he has desired it for his dwelling:
‘This is my resting-place for ever;
here have I chosen to live.
The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
‘There David’s stock will flower;
I will prepare a lamp for my anointed.
I will cover his enemies with shame
but on him my crown shall shine.’
The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.

Matthew 13.16-17:

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Happy are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! I tell you solemnly, many prophets and holy men longed to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.’

Reflection: On this day, or on the Sunday nearest to it (... as was the case in HK, last Sunday) we pray for grandparents. Pope's beautiful message for today

c.f. readings for Feast of St James

2 Corinthians 4.8-51: We are in difficulties on all sides, but never cornered. We see no answer to our problems, but never despair. Even though our bodies are aging and decaying, our hearts are renewed day by day. Our troubles seem great now, but they don't stand comparison with the eternal glory coming soon. When the temporary tent that we live in here on earth is folded up, we will move to an everlasting house built by God for us in heaven
Jesus, help me remember Heaven - especially when life gets tough

My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.

Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Listen

Acts 12.1-2 (For Feast of St James): About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover
 Listen

Matthew 20.20-28: The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples. One day their mother said to Jesus "When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left". Jesus said to James and John "Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left". The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor. So Jesus said to them all
"In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the world".

Jesus, please help me want to help and serve other people, not dominate and control them

c.f. readings for Sunday 17

Genesis 18: One day at Mamre, God and two angels appeared to Abraham. At first, God and the angels looked like men.
Following the ancient custom of hospitality Abraham prepared a feast for them. God told Abraham that the town of Sodom was going to be destroyed because of the evil done there. Abraham pleaded with God not to destroy Sodom. God agreed to postpone Sodom's destruction for a while.

Dear God, please help people avoid sodomy

My recording of this reading

Psalm 138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though I walk in the midst of affliction
you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your love, O Lord, is eternal. Do not abandon us whom you have made.

Lord, when we remember how much you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day

 Listen

Colossians 2.9-18: In Christ's body lives the fullness of divinity. In him, you too find fulfillment. In baptism, you were buried with him and then raised to new life. Our real life is life with and in Christ. Be careful of people who are always going on about some vision they have had, giving such visions more importance than Christ himself
Jesus, may my focus always be on you

 Listen

Luke 11.9-13: Jesus said to his disciples "Ask, and it will be given to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will open. If children ask their parents for something good, their parents will always give it to them. Even more so will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him"
Heavenly Father, please give me your Holy Spirit!

Reflection on the above readings: I once heard a teacher quote a famous poet who said "When we pass to the next life, we will be staggered to see how much our prayers on earth made a difference". I think the poet was Francis Thompson, as here

Wisdom 1-2: Love virtue, honesty and simplicity, since God is found by people whose hearts are seeking goodness. Selfishness, dishonesty and bad habits, these close the door of our hearts and prevent Wisdom from entering. Bad people persecute good people, since the lives of good people are a reproach to bad people.
Lord, please help me to be a good person

My recording of this reading

Psalms 20-21: May the Lord protect and help you, may he give you your heart's desire and fulfil every one of your plans. Some trust in chariots or horses, but we trust in the Lord
Lord, may our plans and hopes be acceptable to you. Please bless our plans

Listen

Revelation 4.1-11: In my vision I saw a door open in heaven. The same voice as before said to me "Come up here. I will show you what is to come in the future". I saw God in all his glory, being worshipped by the angels who sang: "Holy, Holy, Holy
is the Lord God, the Almighty". And I saw 24 elders around the throne. They were praising God saying "You are our Lord and our God. You are worthy of glory and honor and power because you are the Creator of the universe

"Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God, Almighty. Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee"

Listen

Luke 1.39-45: As soon as she could and as quickly as she could, Mary went to Elizabeth's home in the hills near Jerusalem.
As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby in Elizabeth's womb jumped, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Elizabeth said to Mary "Of all women, you are the most blessed, and blessed is the baby in your womb.  Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord?  Blessed are you for believing God's promise"
Mary, blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus

c.f. readings for Feast of Mary Magdalene

Song of Songs 3.1-4: The bride says: On my bed, at night, I sought him whom my heart loves. I sought but did not find him. So I will rise and go through the City; in the streets and in the squares, I will seek him whom my heart loves. I sought, but did not find him. The watchmen came upon me on their rounds in the City: "Have you seen him whom my heart loves?" Scarcely had I passed them, when I found him whom my heart loves.
Jesus, please increase my love for you, my longing for you.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 63: O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you, like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night.
Lord, our hearts are restless, until they rest in you

Recording

2 Corinthians 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from "How Great Thou Art"
Recording

John 20.11-18: Peter and John went home. Mary (Magdalene) remained at the tomb, crying. When she looked inside the tomb, she saw two angels in white. She also saw Jesus standing there, though she did not recognize him. Jesus said "Woman, why are you crying?". Mary thought he was the gardener so she said to him "If you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him". Jesus said "Mary" and she recognized him. Jesus then said "I will ascend to my Father". Mary went and told the disciples all she had seen and heard.
Jesus, please bless people who are crying at funerals  today. May awareness of your presence bring them peace and strength for the days ahead

Recording

Reflection on the above readings:

Apostles' "right brain" said "no use staying at empty tomb. Can't do anything. Useless to stay". Mary Magdalene's feminine intuition said "Stay. Not sure why. But it's best to stay".

Song of Songs 8:
The Bridegroom:

Set me like a seal on your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is strong as death. Love is like a fire, a mighty flame. No flood can quench love. No torrents can drown it. Money cannot buy love.

Lord, please fill my heart with your love

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law
which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.

Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Revelation 3.14-17: He gave me this message for the church in Laodicea: "You are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other. But since you are lukewarm, you are cutting yourself off from me. You are rich in this word's goods, but you are spiritually poor. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, please don't ever let me become a lukewarm Christian

Luke 1.26-38: In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me". And the angel left her

Wed July 20

Yesterday morning MercyHK social worker Lucia went to Lo Wu women's prison to visit some special people

In the afternoon, at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan, social workers Simon and Patrick, with kind volunteers from an Evangelical church, ran a special training session for homeless people and drug addicts to help them improve their skills at using mobile phones

While the above class was in session I continued working on, and later finished, a project to put all of the Simple Bible in combined PDF form on the internet. All four index files (Chinese Old Testament, Chinese New Testament, English Old Testament, English New Testament) are now here. May this work encourage more people to read the Word ... and make it easier for them to do so. And again I recommend this wonderful PDF program PDF Annotator (whose one-month free trial I have been using)!

Song of Songs 5-7:
The bride:
His conversation is sweetness itself,
my beloved is totally  lovable.
I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine.

The groom:
You are beautiful, my love,
as beautiful as Jerusalem.

How beautiful are your feet and thighs.
The curve of your thighs is like the curve of a necklace.

Your navel is like an exquisite wine glass.
Your belly is like a heap of wheat.

Your two breasts are like two baby deer.
Your neck is like an ivory tower.

Your eyes are like beautiful water pools.
Your nose is like a majestic tower.

How beautiful you are, how charming,

Luke 1.5-25: When Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth who were really good people, but they were childless. Once when they went to the Temple in Jerusalem, Zechariah entered the inner sanctuary to burn incense, while all the people prayed outside. An angel appeared and said "Zechariah, your prayer has been heard. Your wife will have a son and you must name him John. He will prepare the way of the Lord". Not long after this, Elizabeth conceived, and for 5 months she kept to herself, thanking God for taking away her humiliation at not being able to have a baby
