One team in the AFL has undergone a huge change this season ... Collingwood.
They have won their last 11 games! Why such a big change from last season? Main
reason seems to be their new coach Craig McRae. His encouraging and optimistic
style has worked wonders for the team ... has released their potential which was
probably hindered by a different style of coaching in the past. This has lessons
for life outside the football world. Encouraging and optimistic
leaders/teachers/parents can make a big difference. Check Craig's style in
his post-match conference a few days ago!

Sirach
12-14: No good will come to a person who persists in
evil.
No good will come to a person who refuses to help the poor. In prosperity you cannot always be sure who is
a true friend,
but in adversity you can be sure who is not a friend. Greed causes a personality to
wither.
The pursuit of wisdom causes a personality to blossom.
Lord, please give me the wisdom
to be kind and to avoid greed
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
35-37: O Lord, please save me from people who slander
me,
you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious,
you in whose light we see light. We believe that if we find our delight in you,
you will grant our heart's desire. And so we commit our lives to you,
confident you will help us in time of trouble.
Lord, please deepen our trust
in you,
especially in time of trouble

Revelation
18.1-4: I saw another angel, shouting at the top of
his voice:
"Babylon has fallen, Babylon the Great has fallen.
Gone for ever, never to return, is your life of magnificence and
ease". Another voice spoke from heaven:
"Come out, my people, away from Babylon,
so that you do not experience her punishment"
Jesus, please help us not be contaminated by
worldly values

Luke
4.1-13: Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led by
the Spirit into the wilderness. For 40 days he ate nothing, and was tempted
by the Devil. The Devil said "If you are the Son of
God, turn a stone into bread".
Jesus replied "Scripture says we do not live on bread alone". The Devil took him to a high place and showed
him all the kingdoms of the world. "Worship me and they will all be
yours" he said.
Jesus replied "Scripture says we must worship only God". Then the Devil took him to the top of the
Temple in Jerusalem and said "If you are the Son of God, throw
yourself down and let the angels protect you". Jesus replied "Scripture says we must not
put the Lord our God to the test". The Devil then left
him
Jesus, protect us from the Devil
and all evil

For many months now my aging Huawei mobile has been having all sorts of issues .... which intensified in the past few weeks ... and after several visits to a repair shop I was advised to buy a new mobile ... which I did on Friday night .... a Samsung Galaxy A22 5G ....so ... please God from now on I will not miss calls/messages .... once I get used to new buttons etc!
At yesterday's lunch for domestic helpers staying at MercyHK hostels, a single mother and her two babies (one aged 1, the other aged 2) were all wearing blue ... as I also was. So a photo was taken of the four of us and put on the helpers' W/App as "The Blue Family"!

Sirach
10-11: As the magistrate is, so will his officials
be.
As the governor is, so will be the inhabitants of his city. What has dust and ashes to pride itself on?
A king today is a corpse tomorrow. Do not praise a person for good looks,
nor dislike anyone for appearance. Small among winged creatures is the bee,
but nothing is sweeter than her honey.
Lord, please give our world
good leaders
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
34:
I will bless the Lord at all times,
his praise always on my lips.
In the Lord my soul shall make its boast,
the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us
praise his name.
I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those
who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is
good.
They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.
Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and
prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Revelation
15.1-4: Then I saw something great and wonderful:
those who had fought against the beast and won, were singing the Song of
the Lamb: "Great and wonderful are all your works,
Lord God almighty.
Just and true are all your ways,
King of nations.
All nations will come and adore you".
Jesus, may all the nations of the earth adore
you

Luke
3.10-14: People asked John the Baptist how they should
reform their lives.
He replied:
"If anyone has extra clothing, share with people who have none.
If anyone has plenty to eat, share with people who have nothing". Tax collectors asked John what they should do.
He replied "Don't cheat anyone". Soldiers asked him "What about us? What
must we do?"
He replied "No bullying. No extortion. Be content with your pay"
Jesus, what about me? What should I do?

c.f. readings for Sunday 19
Wisdom 10-19: Wisdom
has been present in the world since the beginning of time. Wisdom has always
been a close friend of good people. Wise people see God in the beauty of
creation. Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation. Wise people
ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise
people try to be good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
33: Ring out your joy to the
Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord
loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the
heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They
are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May
your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious love

Hebrews
11-12: Only
faith can keep us going. Only faith helped Abraham and other famous people in
the Scriptures to keep going. So
many of them were weak people who were given strength by God, to be brave
when life became difficult. With so many witnesses in a great cloud all around
us, we too should keep running in the race we have started. We should get rid of
everything that slows us down. Keep focusing on Jesus. He is running beside us.
His example going to the cross gives us courage. Try to live at peace with
everyone. Don't let any seed of bitterness begin to grown and make trouble. This
can poison a whole community
Jesus, help me remember your presence in my heart

Yesterday afternoon a group of students from OMI Notre Dame College in Kowloon City came to the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan for our weekly gathering for homeless people ... for interaction ... and to hear presentations from MercyHK social workers Lucia, Simon and Raymond. God bless Notre Dame!
Also yesterday afternoon, a High Court Jury acquitted a young overseas man from a charge of drug trafficking ....after he served two and a half years waiting for his trial. I met him early last night on his release from detention at the High Court holding section and took him to a guest house in Jordan where he can stay until the Immigration Dept clears him to leave HK next week please God.

c.f. readings for Feast
of the Transfiguration
Daniel
7: Once when Daniel was asleep, he
had a vision of heaven: "Thrones were put in place and one of great age
took his seat. His robe was white as snow, his hair as pure as wool. A thousand
thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. Then
coming on the clouds of heaven was one
like a son of man. On him was conferred glory and kingship, and
people of all nations became his servants. His kingship is eternal. His empire
will never be destroyed."
Jesus, please help me understand that you are the "Son of Man" whose
kingship is eternal
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
97: The Lord is king, let
earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes.
His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples
see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let
all creation worship the Creator. Light shines
forth for good people. and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord,
all good people. Give glory to his holy name.
Lord, you indeed are God of the universe

Peter 1.12-18: As long as I
am in this passing world, my duty is to keep on reminding you of the truths we
hold dear. Writing this letter is one way of making sure that after my departure
you will still have a way of recalling the truths we hold dear. These truths are
not cleverly invented myths. I myself saw the majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He was honored and glorified by God the Father, when the Sublime Glory
himself spoke to him and said "This is my Son, the Beloved. He enjoys my
favor". I
heard this myself, spoken from heaven, when I was with Jesus on the holy
mountain.
Jesus, Beloved Son, may more and more people
accept the truth of your Good News
Recording

Matthew
17.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples
Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On
the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the
sun. His clothes were as white as snow. The prophets Moses and Elijah
appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is
for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From
the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him."
The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his
normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to
spend time with you in prayer.

John went through the whole Jordan River area

Sirach 6-7:
Let your acquaintances be many,
but your advisers one in a thousand. A faithful friend is a sure shelter.
People who love and honor the Lord,

If you love listening, you will find wisdom. Stretch out your hand to help poor

2.39-52: Joseph and Mary moved back to their own town
of Nazareth.
The child Jesus was filled with wisdom as he grew older. Each year Joseph and Mary would take
Jesus to Jerusalem for the celebration of the Passover. When Jesus
was 12 years old, they went to Jerusalem as usual. But when their traveling group left Jerusalem,
Jesus stayed behind without his parents knowing it. They presumed he
was somewhere with the group. When they couldn't find him, they went back
to Jerusalem to look for him. After 2 days, they found him, in the Temple,
listening to the religion teachers and asking them questions. People who
heard him were astounded at his intelligence. His mother said to him "My child, why
have you done this to us? Your father and I have been really worried about
you". Jesus replied "Why were you looking for
me? Didn't you know that I must be concerned with my Father's
work?" But they didn't understand what he meant. He went with them to Nazareth and lived under
their authority.
His mother stored all these things in her heart

Last weekend I wrote a mitigation letter for a very young local
man who is due to be sentenced soon for drug trafficking .... having been
recruited in his early teens by a Triad group ... then sacrificed in a set up
operation. Yesterday afternoon his dear mother came to the Dr Jesus Centre in
Jordan to collect my letter. Our first time to meet. Among other things she told
me how she has faithfully visited her son Monday to Friday since he was arrested
two years ago, with her husband visiting on Saturdays and Sundays. That's the
sort of love and compassion I wrote about in this
little article not long ago. God bless this special
family!
Last night MercyHK was providing accommodation for around 30
local people who used to be homeless (mainly at the Alhambra building in Yau Ma
Tei) ... and also for 27 women (homeless domestic helpers) and also for 7
mothers (mainly asylum seekers) with 8 children. The 27+7+8 = 41 are staying at
our hostels in the Jordan area. Two of the 27 are Covid positive and are staying
at our special hostel for positive cases. Tonight at 10.30 pm on ViuTV there is
due to be a program about the work of MercyHK.

Wisdom 4-5: Water puts out a fire.
Almsgiving makes up for sins.
Do not refuse to help a poor person. Some people are all

required. In Jerusalem there was an old man named
Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died, he
would see the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit, he came
to the Temple, took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying
"Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have
seen the Savior. He is a light to enlighten the pagans, and he is the
glory of your people Israel"
