Sirach 29-31: Help others in their time of need. When people ask you for help, do not turn them away. Do not let your children grow up wild. Teach them self control and self-discipline from their earliest years. Good health is better than silver and gold. Better to be poor and healthy than rich and sick. Do not give in to brooding and fretting when things go wrong. Even in the saddest situation, look for light at the end of the tunnel. Avoid jealously and anger. Jealously and anger will shorten your life. A moderate diet will help you sleep well. Gluttony produces sleeplessness, biliousness and grumpiness. Wine was made to cheer our hearts. But drinking to excess will reduce your strength.
Lord, please help me be moderate with food and drink

My recording of this reading

Psalm 46: (c.f. famous hymn by Martin Luther "A Mighty Fortress is our God",  and also the hymn "Be Still and Know that I am God")
God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come and consider the works of the Lord and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God". Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence, especially when we are in trouble

Revelation 21.10-23: I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven. It had God's glory, and glittered like a precious diamond. There was no temple in the city, since the Lord God and the Lamb were themselves the temple. The city did not need sun or  moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and of the Lamb
Jesus, Light of the world, Light of Heaven, we adore you, Lord!

Luke 5.1-11: One day when Jesus was standing near the Lake of Gennesaret, with people pressing round him listening to the word of God, he saw two fishing boats near the bank. He got into one boat, it belonged to Simon Peter, and taught people from the boat, away from the shore a little distance. When he'd finished speaking he said to Simon "Go out further to deep water and use your nets for a catch of fish". Simon replied "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but if you say so I'll lower the nets". They soon caught so many fish that the nets began to tear. They called to their friends in the second boat to come and help. Both boats were soon filled with fish. Peter fell at Jesus' knees and said "Leave me, Lord, I am a sinful man", for he was overcome by the catch they had made, as were James and John who were his partners. But Jesus said to Simon "Don't be afraid. From now on, you will be fishers of people".  Simon and his friends then left everything to follow Jesus
Jesus,  bless and protect  all "fishers of men"

The Assumption of Mary to Heaven

My August 15 Reflection: In our spiritual DNA, there's something about Mary that moves our hearts on August 15. May this reflection be an encouragement to people who might be influenced to doubt the beautiful importance of Mary in God's plan and in our lives

200 years ago today, on Aug 15, 1822, OMI Founder Eugene de Mazenod had a powerful experience before a statue of Mary. Early this evening there will be an OMI gathering at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan, with some domestic helpers who stay at MercyHK hostels, to put into practice a request from OMI Superior General Fr Louis Lougen: (and see below!)

The 200th anniversary of the Oblate Madonna......  On August 15, 1822, our Founder had an extraordinary experience of Mary’s presence ....August 15, 2022 will fall on a Monday. On Sunday, August 14, or on Monday at some convenient time, Oblate communities could organize festive gatherings of the Oblate family.  There can be a time for prayer.  A simple pot-luck supper or picnic could create a joyful atmosphere and deepen our communion.  Special attention to include the poor, shut-ins, the elderly, etc. is an Oblate characteristic.  Sharing a meal together is a beautiful sign of the Reign of God that Mary celebrated in her Magnificat.

 c.f. readings for Assumption

Revelation 12: The sanctuary of God in heaven opened and the ark of the covenant could be seen inside it. Then came flashes of lightning, peals of thunder and an earthquake, and violent hail. Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman adorned with the sun, standing on the moon, and with twelve stars on her head for a crown
My recording of this reading

Mary of Guadalupe
Many people see in this picture the Woman of today's first reading: dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with stars

Psalm 44: The daughters of kings are among your loved ones. On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir. Listen, O daughter, give ear to my words: forget your own people and your father's house. So will the king desire your beauty: He is your lord, pay homage to him. They are escorted amid gladness and joy; they pass within the palace of the king
Recording

1 Corinthians 15: Christ has been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep. Death came through one man and in the same way the resurrection of the dead has come through one man. Just as all people die in Adam, so all people will be brought to life in Christ; but all of them in their proper order: Christ as the first-fruits and then, after the coming of Christ, those who belong to him. After that will come the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, having done away with every sovereignty, authority and power. For he must be king until he has put all his enemies under his feet and the last of the enemies to be destroyed is death, for everything is to be put under his feet.
Recording

Luke 1: Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, "Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled." And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit exults in God my saviour; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid. Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me"
Recording

Reflection on the above readings:

The spirituality of Mary invites us to the values of Catholic Social Teaching: concern for the poor, solidarity with all people, a preference for the ways of nonviolence rather than military might, forgiveness and reconciliation rather than domination and manipulation.

c.f. readings for Sunday 20

Jeremiah 37-45: Jeremiah was arrested and put into a muddy well to die. But a good official persuaded the king to free Jeremiah. When the Chaldaeans captured Jerusalem, they sent many people to Babylon as exiles. Jeremiah was spared from exile and he kept trying to get the people to accept defeat as God had told them. But most of the people would not listen to Jeremiah, even though all his prophecies about defeat had come true. God protected the good officials who had helped Jeremiah.
Lord, please help government leaders be good, like the good officials who helped Jeremiah.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.
Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

 Listen

Hebrews 11-12: Only faith can keep us going. Only faith helped Abraham and other famous people in the Scriptures to keep going. So many of them were weak people who were given strength by God, to be brave when life became difficult. With so many witnesses in a great cloud all around us, we too should keep running in the race we have started. We should get rid of everything that slows us down. Keep focusing on Jesus. He is running beside us. His example going to the cross gives us courage. Try to live at peace with everyone. Don't let any seed of bitterness begin to grown and make trouble. This can poison a whole community
Jesus, help me remember your presence in my heart

 Listen

Luke 12.49-53:

Jesus said to his disciples: I have come to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were blazing already! There is a baptism I must still receive, and how great is my distress till it is over!  Do you suppose that I am here to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on a household of five will be divided: three against two and two against three; the father divided against the son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law against mother-in-law

Reflection on the above readings:  Only once in the Gospels did Jesus become violent - when he drove the merchants out of the Temple. He also got angry at the religious leaders ... and at a few devils. But he was a person of peace, who told Peter to put down his sword, who taught his followers to forgive and make peace with others. So, today's Gospel needs to be understood very carefully. "Division" here means a situation where following Jesus' teaching causes conflict with others - e.g. if my group of friends wants to start using drugs or start stealing or doing some other wrong thing, being a Christian means I need to stop being part of the group = conflict. But for most people this is not a common thing.

Sirach 25-28: Happy the husband of a really good wife. A good wife is the joy of her husband. Do not praise a person before they have spoken. A person's speech reveals what sort of person is speaking. Among stupid people look for an opportunity to leave, but among thoughtful people take your time. Sarcasm and abuse are the mark of an arrogant person. Resentment and anger are bad for everyone. Forgive others if they have offended you. Then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Avoid quarrelling and losing your temper. Do not let your mouth speak scandal.
Lord, please give me the wisdom to control my speech

My recording of this reading

Psalms 42-45: Like a deer that longs for running streams, so my soul is longing for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for you, the God of my life. I think of you all the time, here in my land of exile. People make fun of us here in exile. They taunt us saying "Where is your God?" Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.
Lord, no matter what happens, may I always hope in you

Listen

Revelation 21.5-8: Then the One sitting on the throne said "Now I am making the whole of creation new. I am the Beginning and the End. I give Eternal Life to all who die in my friendship. But for those whose evil deeds have removed themselves from my friendship, there is Eternal Death"
Jesus, have mercy on people who are rejecting your friendship

Luke 4.38-44: Jesus went to the home of Simon Peter. Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus was asked to help her. He bent over her, rebuked the fever and it left her. She immediately got up and served her guests. After the Sabbath finished at sunset, everyone who had sick friends brought them to Jesus. Laying his hands on each of them, he healed them. The next morning Jesus got up early and went to a lonely place to pray.  People found him and asked him not to leave the area. But he replied "I must proclaim the Good News of the kingdom of God to other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do"
Jesus,  heal my friend ... (name)... who is sick

Here God lives among people. He will make his home among them. They shall be his people. He will be their God. His name is God-with-them. He will wipe away all tears from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more sadness. The world of the past has gone

Luke 4. 31-37: Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee. On the Sabbath day he taught in the local prayer hall. Jesus said sharply "Be quiet! Come out of him". And the devil left the man without hurting him. People in the hall said "He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey him". Jesus' reputation continued to spread through the district

Sirach 20-23: People who foolishly talk too much become unpopular. Wise people know when to speak and how much to speak. The talk of a foolish person is like a load on a journey. The talk of a wise person is a pleasure to hear. Lord, do not give me proud eyes. Do not let lust take control of my life. Do not let my mouth use coarse and foul language. Luke 4.23-30: People in the prayer hall rejected Jesus. "Who does he think he is?" they asked. "He's just the son of Joseph". Jesus replied "No prophet is ever accepted in his own country". Sirach 15-19: Wisdom makes us happy. Foolishness makes us sad. Humility is the pathway to wisdom. We are free to choose good or evil, wisdom or foolishness. To live a good life is something everyone can try to do. If we have done something wrong, we must ask pardon of the Lord. We must turn our back on wrongdoing, and face towards the Lord. Do not indulge in luxurious living. Too much wine and luxury corrupts the heart. Avoid gossip and slander. Be someone who can keep a secret. The way people dress tells you what work they do. The way people walk also tells a lot about them.
Lord, please help me turn my back on wrongdoing. Help me face towards you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 38-39:
O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.
Lord, help us understand the meaning of life

Revelation 19.1-9: After this I heard the sound of a huge crowd in heaven singing: "Alleluia! Victory and glory and power to our God!" The sound of the crowd  was like the sound of the ocean or the roar of thunder as they called out: "Alleluia! The reign of the Lord our God the Almighty has begun. Let us be glad and joyful, and give praise to God, because this is the time for the marriage of the Lamb". And an angel said "Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb"

Luke 4.14-22: Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee. He taught in local prayer halls. His reputation spread. He came to his home town of Nazareth and went to the prayer hall on the Sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up and read these words from the prophet Isaiah: "The spirit of the Lord has been given to me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free". Jesus then sat down and said to the people in the prayer hall "These words from Isaiah are being fulfilled today even as you listen"
Jesus, please help me be more open to the power of your Spirit. O Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life
