Sirach 42-43: What an amazing world we live in! The Creator sure did a good job programming everything! Great is the Lord who made the sun, the moon and stars. What a beautiful creature is the rainbow! The seasons, the rain, the snow, lightning and thunder: all proclaim the glory of God. How great is God who has made such an amazing universe. How can we praise and honor him enough?
Dear God, thank you for creating the world. Please help us live the way you want us to live

My recording of this reading

Psalm 61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

Acts 1.12-14: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half a kilometer. They gathered in an upstairs room which they used as a meeting place. The 11 apostles were Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time praying. With them were several women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus' brothers
Jesus, your apostles' group spent special time in prayer preparing for the coming of the Holy Spirit. I now ask them in heaven to pray that the Holy Spirit will increase his influence in my life

Listen

Luke 6.6-11: On another Sabbath Jesus  visited a prayer hall. A man with a withered hand was in the prayer hall. Some religious leaders were watching to see if Jesus would heal the man (since no work was allowed on the Sabbath, and they regarded healing as work). Jesus knew what they were thinking,  so he said to the man with the withered hand "Stand up! Come out into the middle of the hall". He came out and stood there. Jesus then asked the leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil; to save life or to destroy it?" Then he said to the man with the withered hand "Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was healed. The leaders were very angry. They left the prayer hall and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus
Jesus, please stop bad religious leaders from misleading people

Mon Aug 22

Yesterday I had 8.30am Chinese Mass at St Paul's Parish, Yau Ma Tei, then 11am English Mass at the Dr Jesus Centre for domestic helpers staying at MercyHK shelters. Four children under 3 years old attended the 11am Mass and they were like angels .... three of them looking at children's books on little carpets on the floor, the other in her mother's arms. Social worker Lucia is now caring for 10 children (!) and about 20 women ... including parents of the children

c.f. readings for Queenship of Mary (.. one week after Assumption 15/8...)

Isaiah 9: The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light. On those who live in a land of deep shadow, a light has shone. For the yoke that was weighing on them, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken and removed. For there is a child born for us, a son given to us, and dominion is laid on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonder-Counselor, Mighty-God, Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace.
Jesus, Prince of Peace, thank you for the peace and hope and joy of your friendship and love

My recording of this reading

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting, praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home, and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

Recording

Luke 1.26-38 (a): In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?"
Recording

Luke 1.26-38 (b): The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me". And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb

Last Friday 8 special people attended our weekly gathering for homeless people. Two are still sleeping "on the street". Six used to sleep at McDonald's on in parks etc. MercyHK is now providing accommodation for 5 of the six, and used to provide accommodation for the other one. On Friday we played a game: In turn each person was asked to answer: "10 years ago, where were you and what were you doing". Then we went another round "20 years ago ..", then 30, then 40, then 50, then 60, then 70. We learnt a lot about each other ...including the fact that one of the men used to be a Rolls Royce driver for an employer!!!

c.f. readings for Sunday 21

Isaiah 62-66: The Lord says: "My eyes are drawn to the humble and contrite person who lovingly meditates on my word. Towards Jerusalem I will send peace, flowing like a river. I am going to gather the nations of every language. All peoples will know and love me
Lord, please give me more love for the Bible. Please give the world more peace. Please help all peoples know and love you
My recording of this reading

Psalm 117: O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

 Listen

Luke 13.22-30:

Through towns and villages Jesus went teaching, making his way to Jerusalem. Someone said to him, "Sir, will there be only a few saved?" He said to them, "Try your best to enter by the narrow door, because, I tell you, many will try to enter and will not succeed.  Once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you may find yourself knocking on the door, saying, "Lord, open to us" but he will answer, "I do not know where you come from." Then you will find yourself saying, "We once ate and drank in your company; you taught in our streets" but he will reply, "I do not know where you come from. Away from me, all you wicked men!"  Then there will be weeping and grinding of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves turned outside. And men from east and west, from north and south, will come to take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. Yes, there are those now last who will be first, and those now first who will be last.

Reflection on the above readings:  Ever since human life began, humans have been dividing themselves into kingdoms, nations ... "us and them".... while the Father of the human family has been posting message after message saying that all humans are brothers and sisters of the same family

Sat Aug 20

MercyHK's new social worker for prisoners, Jane, spent virtually all of yesterday at Kowloon City Court, helping a couple who not long ago went through a terrible tragedy

Also going through tragedy is a woman from Thailand who was released in 2020 after 8 years in a HK prison for drug trafficking (having been tricked to bring drugs to HK). A few days ago the woman and her aunt, on a motorcycle driven by the woman, were injured in a traffic accident, and after two days in ICU the aunt died .... for which her family is blaming the woman. A local Thai OMI priest in Thailand is counselling the woman. JESUS, HELP!

Sirach 40-41: Wine and music cheer the heart, but better than wine and music is the love of wisdom. Do not speak sharply to people. Do not ignore people who greet you. Do not gaze at another man's wife. Do not carry on with a single girl.
Lord, please help me control my speech and my eyes

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength, and each morning acclaim your love.
O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

Listen

Acts 1.6-11: On the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus said to his apostles "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses in every part of the world". As he said this, he was lifted up while they watched.
A cloud took him from their sight. Then two angels appeared to them and said "Jesus who has been taken up from you, will come back some day in the same way as you have seen him leave"

Jesus, help me be your witness by the way I think and speak and live

Listen

Luke 6.1-5: One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a cornfield.  The disciples were hungry. They picked some ears of corn and ate them. Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the Pharisees. So the Pharisees said to Jesus "Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what King David and his followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which only the priests were allowed to eat. I am Master of the Sabbath".
Jesus,  please help me understand that love is more important than law

Sirach 38-39: All healing is a gift of God. To obtain healing:  pray to the Lord, ask forgiveness for sin, then follow the doctor's advice. Mourn for the dead  and honor their graves, but do not let your heart be controlled by grief. Ordinary working people have little time for study. But the Lord blesses everyone who studies wisdom.
Lord, please heal my friend (..name..) who is sick

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Listen

Acts 1.1-5: Dear Friend of God, in my first book (the Gospel of Luke) I wrote about everything Jesus did until the day he was taken up to heaven. For 40 days after his death, he appeared to his apostles many times, and taught them about the kingdom of God. He told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for what the Father had promised: "You will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit".
Jesus, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, increase your influence in my life

Listen

Luke 5. 27-32: As Jesus walked along, he noticed a tax collector sitting by the customs house. The collector's name was Levi (Matthew). Jesus said to him "Follow me".  Leaving everything, he got up and went with Jesus. In Jesus' honor Levi held a banquet in his house. Many  tax collectors and social outcasts were present. The religious leaders complained "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and outcasts?" Jesus replied "It is not those who are well who need the doctor, but the sick. I have come to call sinners, not the virtuous, to repentance"
Jesus, thank you for befriending people who were looked down on. Please help me do likewise

Thu Aug 18

Three activities at the Dr Jesus Centre yesterday: in the morning Eddie (MercyHK chairman), social workers Lucia and Simon, and accountants Edmund, Monica and Shirley and I attended a MercyHK finance meeting at the Dr Jesus Centre. Our situation is very sound  .... thanks to so many kind benefactors. God bless all benefactors and yesterday's meeting group!

In the afternoon with social workers Simon, Raymond and Patrick I took part in the weekly gathering for local drug addicts .... more than a dozen attended, despite heavy rain ... and we enjoyed a presentation by speakers from St Barnabas Society

In the evening I joined SR & P for our weekly gathering for about 8 Nepal drug addicts... at which we shared a McDonald's meal!

During the day Lucia welcomed more homeless domestic workers ... last night she was looking after 23 women and 8 children ... one of the women arrived Tuesday midnight ... and alslo one local man who came two days ago.

And during the day at her desk in the Dr Jesus Centre, our new social worker for prison jobs, Jane, continued to process a backlog of mail jobs

Sirach 35-37: Be generous as the Lord has been generous to you. Be cheerful when you make a gift to the Lord. The humble person's prayer pierces the clouds, so love the Lord with a humble heart. If a property has no fence, it will be plundered. If a man has no wife, he is like a boat without an anchor. Be careful when you consult other people. After all consultation, follow the advice of your own heart.
Lord, please give me a cheerful and humble heart

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forgot God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

Revelation 22.16-20: "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to make these revelations to you for the sake of the churches. I am of David's line, the Root of David, the Bright Star of the Morning". The Spirit and the Bride say: "Come". Let all who want eternal life say: "Come". Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
Come Lord Jesus! Come into my heart! Come into our world!

Listen

Luke 5.17-26: God's power was on display when Jesus healed people. People came from far and near to hear him teach, and to ask for healing. One day some people carried  a paralyzed man through a crowd to Jesus. The man was on a stretcher. Jesus knew that these people believed he could help them, so he said to the paralyzed man "My friend, your sins are forgiven". Some religious leaders in the crowd were thinking to themselves that Jesus was wrong to say he could forgive sins. So Jesus said to the leaders "Which is easier: to say 'Your sins are forgiven', or to say 'Get up and walk'?" Then to prove that he had authority to forgive sins, he said to the paralyzed man "Get up, pick up your bed and go home". The man got up, picked up his stretcher and went home. The crowd praised God for what they had seen
Jesus, please give me more faith in your power to forgive, your power to heal

Many groups of people came to the Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street yesterday .... all of them very special people. But the most special was "A Wah" who came for a prayer with MercyHK social workers Simon, Raymond and Patrick before going to a drug treatment centre. A Wah has been in detention dozens of times for drug use ... and up till recently could be seen on the street near Jordan MTR Exit A begging money to support his habit. For some time he has been coming to our Wed weekly meeting for drug addicts .... and finally agreed to go to a drug treatment centre. He is the 10th drug addict our team has arranged to enter a treatment centre over the past few months ....for which I say "Thank you Jesus"!

Our newly renovated/re-rented F Hostel had its first guest yesterday afternoon: a young local man whose previous place of refuge asked us to take him because he tested Covid positive. We have registered him with the govt online service and maybe he will transfer to a govt quarantine centre if a human sees the online message.

Sirach 32-34: If you are chosen for an important job, don't let it go to your head. When you speak, keep to the point. Say much in a few words. Reflect before you act. Look before you leap. Travel broadens the mind. Ask God's protection when you travel.
Lord, please bless everyone who is travelling today

My recording of this reading

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe

They will not need lamplight or sunlight, because the Lord God will be shining on them

Luke 5.12-16: In one town that Jesus went to, a leper fell on his face and pleaded "Sir, if you want to, you can heal me". Jesus stretched out  his hand, touched him, and said "Of course I want to!  Be healed!" And the leprosy left him at once. Jesus' reputation continued to grow.  Large crowds gathered to hear him speak and to have their sicknesses cured. But afterwards Jesus would always go to a quiet place where he could be alone and pray
Jesus, please help me understand that you want sick people to be healed

Reflection:  Jesus said "Of course I want to heal you" ... speaking just like a parent to a sick child. No parent would say "this is your cross" ....nor did Jesus ever say to a sick person "your illness is your cross".
