Tues Aug 30

Yesterday MercyHK social workers arranged for yet another drug addict to enter a drug treatment centre .... he's No. 15 in the past 5 months. Thank you Jesus!

Also yesterday I sent the following email to the Consultation Committee for the Chief Executive's upcoming Policy Address:

Dear Policy Address Team
I would like to suggest a new joint project involving government agencies and NGOs to help homeless people in urgent situations.
At the moment, people who are suddenly homeless (evicted by landlord because can't pay bills or because Covid positive, domestic violence, just out of detention etc) often need days or even weeks to go through the bureaucratic process of registration for help  .... which means sleeping "on the street" until they find help. This especially is true of people who are urgently in need of help evenings/weekends/holidays when most agencies are closed.
There needs to be a structure whereby people in need of urgent and immediate assistance can phone for help and a real, true, live, human being answers the call and assesses the situation and takes action .... not a "hotline" which no one answers, or an internet form which no one responds to.
My own little NGO, MercyHK, is currently providing emergency accommodation for more than 80 people. We are available 24 hours every day. But our service operates only in the Jordan/YMT area. There needs to be a similar service in each district of Hong Kong. This could be arranged if government agencies and NGOs could coordinate a new joint structure.
As far as I know, MercyHK is the only agency in Hong Kong which can provide immediate accommodation for people suddenly homeless because they are Covid positive. We have done so for more than 100 cases since the end of February this year. Earlier in the year when contact was made directly by phone with the Department of Health, most of our cases would be transferred to a government quarantine centre within a few days. But in the past couple of months when we register new cases on line, nothing happens .... and we are left minding the cases in one of our centres especially dedicated for Covid positive people.
I am most willing to discuss this proposal in more detail.
Yours sincerely

Isaiah 3-4: Jerusalem is falling into ruins because its people do not keep the Lord's way. Jerusalem's leaders mislead the people
and lead the way in doing wrong. But soon the Lord will take action. He will raise up a people who are good. The Lord will protect these special people. He will be their refuge and help.

Lord, please help our nation to avoid evil and do good

My recording of this reading

Psalms 73-77:
Sometimes when I see how bad people prosper, I wonder what's the use in trying to be good? But then I realize that everyone someday has to pay the bill for any evil they have bought in the world. Sometimes when I see our world and religion in ruins, I wonder why has God abandoned us? Then I remember that God has promised to break the power of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good people. So may all people honor the Lord our God and judge. May the Lord give us his loving help.
Lord, you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good and to trust you always

Acts 2.37-47: The crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we do?" Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". That day about 3,000 people were baptized. These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to a life of sharing and caring, to the Breaking of Bread, and to prayer. Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group
Jesus, please help me remain faithful to the Christian way of life

Listen

Luke 6.41-45: In his teaching, Jesus said "Why do you notice the splinter in someone else's eye, but don't notice the plank in your own eye?  Deal with your own faults before you start correcting other people. A good tree does not produce bad fruit. A bad tree does not produce good fruit. The fruit tells you what sort of tree it came from. So with people: their words and actions tell you what their heart is like - good or bad
Jesus, please help me be a good person, producing good fruit

Yesterday morning I had 8.30am Chinese Mass at St Paul's Parish, Yau Ma Tei, then 11am English Mass at the Dr Jesus Centre for domestic workers who are staying at MercyHK hostels. The 11am congregation included 7 children, most of them under 3 years old! .... and then lunch at the Centre.

Two days ago Pope Francis installed 20 new cardinals. Made me think how the whole process has many problems. My suggestion: no more cardinals ... let the conclave to elect the next pope consist of the president of each nation's bishops' conference. And on the same theme .... let bishops in future be elected by representatives of each parish/school/religious congregation/agency in the diocese! Also... no more Vatican "apostolic delegates" in each country ... let the bishops' conference president be the Vatican's representative!

c.f. readings for feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist

Jeremiah 1: Jeremiah lived in a village not far from Jerusalem. Jeremiah's father was a priest. God said to Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. I have appointed you as prophet to the nations." Jeremiah said to God: "Lord, I do not know how to speak. I am so young." God then touched Jeremiah's mouth and said: "I now put my words into your mouth. Go and tell the people everything I ask you to speak. Do not be dismayed by anyone. I am making you strong. You must confront Judah's kings, priests and people. They will oppose you, but will not overcome you, for I am with you."
Lord, please give special courage to people who speak your message for the world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp.
Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Mark 6.17-29: Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison. This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife. During a birthday party for Herod, the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod that he said he would give her anything she wanted. Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Herod then had John beheaded.
Jesus, please give the world good leaders, and protect people from bad leaders like Herod

Sun Aug 28

In conversations I had yesterday with several people in different locations, the idea came up that there needs to be a place/person/team/office in each area of HK where needy people can apply for emergency and immediate  help/meals/accommodation. At the moment such help is not so easy to find/access because of well-meaning bureaucracy/rules/structures. Really this is a service that needs the partnership of govt and NGOs. MercyHK and other NGOs are providing such services in different ways ...but for accommodation most other groups require registration to be made by a registered social worker (... where do you find one on the weekend or after hours?). Last night MercyHK was providing accommodation for more than 80 people .... about 40 local people and about 40 in the migrant worker / asylum seeker group (including 13.5 children).

c.f. readings for Sunday 22

Sirach 1-3: All wisdom comes from God. Love for God is the source of wisdom. If you desire wisdom, keep the Lord's commandments, in private as well as in public. Keep the commandment to honor your parents. Respect for your father will atone for your sins. Honor for your mother will gain you blessings. Support your father in his old age. Even if his mind should fail, show him kindness. Do not despise him in your health and strength. Be gentle in the way you live your life. The greater you are, the more humbly you should behave.
Dear God, please help me always respect and honor my parents

My recording of this reading

Psalm 68: O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God. Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. God gives his people strength.

Hebrews 12.18-13.6: Your ancestors were at Mount Sinai when God spoke to Moses. But you already have one foot in the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, where millions of angels gather in praise. So, continue to live a life of love and hospitality. Keep in mind those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them. Keep your marriage undefiled. Avoid greed. Be content with what you have
Jesus, help me remember heaven....and people in prison

Luke 14.12-14: Jesus said to the meal guests "When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, family, or rich neighbors. That they cannot repay you means you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again"

MercyHK was last night providing accommodation for around 40 local HK people and for 42.5 in the domestic helper group (28 women, 13.5 children, one man). And yesterday our social workers assisted two more drug addicts to enter a drug treatment centre (bringing the number of drug addicts so helped in the past 4 months to 13). Much to be thankful for last night!

And yesterday afternoon at the Dr Jesus Centre 15 homeless or formerly homeless people attended our weekly gathering. It was so enjoyable we forgot about time and were surprised we had gone for more than 2 hours!

Isaiah 2: In the days to come, the mountain of the Lord's Temple will be specially blessed. All the nations will come to it and say: "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, that he may teach us his ways so that we may walk in his paths". When they learn the ways of the Lord, then the nations will hammer their swords into ploughshares, their spears into sickles. Nation will not lift sword against nation, there will be no more training for war. O House of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!
Lord, please help world leaders do more for peace in our world

Psalm 72: O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.

Isaiah 1: Listen, heaven and earth, for the Lord is speaking: "The ox knows its owner and the donkey its master's crib.
But my people have rebelled against me. I am tired of your hypocritical lives, tired of offerings given with dirty hands. You are so greedy for profit, always looking for bribes. Take your wrong-doing out of my sight. Stop doing evil. Learn to do good.
Practise justice towards the poor. Help the oppressed, the orphan and the widow. Then, though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow."

Sirach 51: When I was young, before I became a traveler, I prayed for wisdom. Thanks to wisdom, I have been successful in my work. And so I finish this book by praising the God who gave me wisdom: I give thanks to you, Lord and King, and praise you, God my savior. For by wisdom you have protected and supported me, and rescued me from so many troubles. I will praise you all my days and gratefully sing your praises.

Psalms 69-70:
Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison. In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant. Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God. Jesus and the 12 came down from the hill to a place of level ground. Gathered there were his many disciples and a large crowd of people from all over the country who had come to hear him and to be healed of diseases. People in the crowd tried to touch Jesus because power came out of him that cured everyone
