Tues Sep 6

Late yesterday afternoon I went to a Mong Kok government office to apply for a new ID card (... old cards are being replaced...). I arrived in the office, without an appointment, around 5.15 and left around 5.30. The whole process had taken only 15 mins! New card can be collected next week. Super-efficiency!

Readings are from Simple Bible

Isaiah 13-19: God will punish the world for its evil-doing. Then  peoples' hearts will turn back to their Creator. Then people will no longer worship idols made by human hands. Instead, people will look towards their Creator. The nations will be converted and know the Lord. Egypt and Assyria will be blessed like Israel. The Lord will give his blessing in these words:
"Blessed be my people Egypt, blessed be
Assyria my creation, and blessed be Israel my heritage".

Lord, please help all Middle East countries, especially Israel, Egypt, Iran and Iraq, to be friends

My recording of this reading

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met. Justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps
Lord, please give more peace to our world

Listen

Acts 4.32-37: The apostles continued to witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power. The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul. They willingly shared everything they had with people who were in need. Joseph was a Temple minister who had been born in Cyprus. He sold a field he owned, and gave the proceeds to the apostles. The apostles called him "Barnabas" ("Son of Encouragement")
Jesus, help me to be more caring and sharing

Listen

Luke 8.1-3: Jesus went to many towns and villages, proclaiming the Good News. The 12 apostles went with him, as did a group of women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna and several others.
These women used their own money to support Jesus and the apostles

Jesus, thank you for all the women who support the spread of the Good News in today's world

Listen

Reflection: Today's Gospel reminds me of the saying, adapted: "Behind every successful group of men there's a group of dedicated women" .... and indeed, in today's church, in every parish there's a group of dedicated women who keep the parish going!

Isaiah 10-12: Woe to legislators who issue unjust laws, laws which exploit poor people. A day of reckoning is coming when unjust legislators will answer to the Lord. The Lord will send a good and just king to rescue the poor. A shoot will spring from the stock of Jesse, on him the spirit of the Lord will rest, a spirit of wisdom and insight, a spirit of counsel and power, a spirit of knowledge, a spirit of love and respect for the Lord. He will judge justly and the land will know peace. The country will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord. Exiles will return to their homeland. Then we will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation, for great in our midst will be the Holy One of Israel.
Lord, please help governments to do more for poor people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 84: How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord. My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling. Even sparrows and swallows are your temple guests. They build homes for their young near your altar. Blessed are the people who live and work in your temple. And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life, you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.
Dear God, thank you for special places of prayer

Listen

Acts 4.23-31: When Peter and John were released, they went to a gathering of apostles and friends and told them everything that had happened. The group then prayed "Master, it is you who made heaven and earth and sea. Please protect us from leaders who threaten us. Help us to proclaim your message with great boldness. Bless us to heal and work miracles through the name of your holy servant Jesus". As they prayed, the building rocked. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God boldly
Jesus, by the grace of your Holy Spirit, please help me to proclaim your message boldly

Listen

Luke 7.36-50: A religious leader invited Jesus for a meal. A woman who had a bad name heard that Jesus was at the leader's home. She entered the house and knelt behind Jesus, crying. Her tears fell on Jesus' feet and she wiped them away with her hair. She covered his feet with kisses, and put  ointment on them. The leader was thinking "If Jesus is a prophet, he would know what sort of woman is now touching him". So Jesus said to the leader "I came into your house and you did not follow the custom of pouring water on my feet. But this woman has poured out her tears on my feet. You gave me no welcoming kiss, but she has been covering my feet with kisses. You gave me no welcoming oil on my head, but she has anointed my feet. And I tell you that her sins must have been forgiven, or she would not have shown such great love. People who are forgiven little, show  little love"
Jesus, please forgive my sins. Help me show great love

Listen

Reflection: "Bad name" people often have more love for God than "good name" people

Many thanks Yuki and Team for distribution of 150 Moon Festival gift packs to needy people yesterday afternoon outside MercyHK's social centre at 191 Temple Street. Another smooth operation ....just like at Dragon Boat Festival time in June.
God bless the whole team!

At yesterday afternoon's prayer meeting for the sick, I learnt that when a whole family not long ago became Covid positive, half the family had strong symptoms and illnesses, while the other half had almost no symptoms/illnesses. The no-side effects half are followers of Jesus and they pray. To me this indicates that prayer is a powerful vaccination!!!

c.f. readings for Sunday 23

Wisdom 10-19: Wisdom has been present in the world since the beginning of time. Wisdom has always been a close friend of good people. Wise people see God in the beauty of creation. Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation. Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise people  try to be good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

 Listen

Philemon 9-25: While here in prison, I have helped someone you know to become a believer. He is carrying this letter - Onesimus. I'm sending him back to you, no longer your slave, but your brother in Christ. Please welcome him as you would welcome me. And let me pay for anything he stole from you. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you
Jesus, please put an end to slavery in the world

 Listen

Luke 14.25-27: Great crowds accompanied Jesus on his way and he turned and spoke to them. "If any man wants to be my disciples he must realise that I am more important than his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too. Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple"

Reflection on the above readings: Most translations of today's Gospel have Jesus saying we must hate our own parents etc ....which is ridiculous ...Jesus would never say such a thing. What he is saying is that our relationship with him must be number one. In fact, if Jesus is No. 1 in my life, my love for parents etc will increase! (If the poor translation is used, what a terrible Gospel for Father's Day today in Australia!)

Isaiah 9: The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light. On those who live in a land of deep shadow, a light has shone. For the yoke that was weighing on them, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken and removed. For there is a child born for us, a son given to us and dominion is laid on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonder-Counselor, Mighty-God,
Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace.

Lord, Prince of Peace, thank you for the peace and hope and joy of your friendship and love

My recording of this reading

Psalms 82-83: God says to corrupt officials: "How long will you judge unjustly and mistreat the poor? You should do justice for the weak and the orphan. You should defend the afflicted and the needy. You should rescue the weak and the poor. You should set them free from the hand of the wicked". O God, please protect your people from corruption and injustice. Save us also from attack by other nations. Let everyone know that you are the Lord of all the earth.
Lord, please stop corrupt officials from hurting people

Listen

Acts 4.13-22: The religious leaders were astonished that two uneducated men like Peter and John could speak so confidently. The leaders also realized that a miracle had taken place: the crippled man was standing next to Peter and John. The leaders gave Peter and John a formal legal warning not to speak in future about Jesus. Peter and John replied "Which is right? To obey you, or obey God? We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard". The leaders released the two apostles. They were afraid to punish them since all the people were giving glory to God for the miracle that had happened
Jesus, please help me obey you always

Listen

Luke 7.18-30: John the Baptist, imprisoned by King Herod, heard  the news about Jesus.  John sent two of his friends to ask Jesus "Are you the promised One?" Jesus replied "Go and tell John what you have seen today: the blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is proclaimed to the poor". Jesus then spoke to the people about John: "Everyone who accepted baptism from John acknowledged God's plan. But by refusing baptism from him, the religious leaders thwarted what God had in mind for them"
Jesus, please don't let me do anything to thwart your plan for my life

Isaiah 7: A foreign king and his army attacked  Jerusalem. The king of Judah and his people were full of fear. God told Isaiah to say to the king of Judah: "Keep calm, have no fear.  You will not be defeated. The Lord himself  gives you a sign of his protection: a maiden is with child and will give birth to a son whom she will call God-with-us."
Lord,  please help me understand how you are God-with-me every day

My recording of this reading

Psalm 81: Ring out your joy to God our strength, shout in triumph to the God of Jacob. Listen to the voice of the Lord: "I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt. Let there be no foreign god among you, no worship of a false god. O that my people would heed me, that Israel would walk in my ways. At once I would subdue their foes. But Israel I would feed with finest wheat and honey".
Lord, please help us to walk in your ways

Listen

Acts 4.1-12: While Peter was talking to the crowd, some religious leaders and soldiers came and arrested Peter and John. The next day the leaders held a meeting and asked the prisoners: "By what power and by whose name did you heal the crippled beggar?" Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied "The cripple is able to stand up perfectly healthy because he was healed by Jesus the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. Salvation comes no other way. Only by the name of Jesus can we be saved"
Jesus, your name means "God
saves", you are indeed the Saviour of the world

Listen

Luke 7.11-17: Jesus and his disciples went to a town called Nain.  Many other people went with them. As they reached the town, a dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. When the Lord saw her, he felt sorry for her. "Do not cry" he said. Then he said "Young man, I tell you to get up". The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God saying "A great prophet has appeared among us. God has visited his people".
Jesus, please give me the faith to pray that dead people will come back to life - you who once told your disciples "to raise the dead"

Isaiah 6: In the year 740 B.C., I had a vision of the Lord God in Heaven: Above the Lord were 6 angels who cried out "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God. His glory fills the whole earth." Then I heard a voice asking "Whom shall I send? Who will be our messenger?" I answered "Here I am, send me." Then the Lord sent me to be a prophet to the people
Here I am, Lord, send me. I'm willing to do anything you want me to do

My recording of this reading

Psalms 79-80: O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us.
If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.

Lord, please heal any problems in my family tree

Listen

Acts 3.9-16: When people saw the former crippled man walking, they couldn't believe their eyes. So Peter said to them "Why are you so surprised? Do you think John and I made this cripple walk? It is by our faith in Jesus that this man has been restored to health. Jesus is the Holy One, the Just One, the Prince of Life whom you handed over to Pilate for crucifixion. But God raised him from the dead
Jesus, Prince of Life, please increase my faith in you. Please give me a faith that can bring your  healing to handicapped people

Listen

Luke 7.1-10: Jesus went to the town of Capernaum. In the town there was a Roman soldier, a centurion, who had a dear servant who has sick and close to death. Having heard about Jesus, the centurion sent some Jewish friends to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant. The Jewish friends said to Jesus "He deserves this of you. He is friendly to our people. He is the one who built our prayer hall". Jesus went with them,  but before they reached the house the centurion sent some servants with the message "Sir, I am not worthy to receive you into my house. This is why I didn't come to you personally.  Just say a word, and my servant will be healed". When Jesus heard these words, he said to the crowd following him "I have not found faith as great as this man's". When the messengers got back to the house, they saw that the servant was healed and in perfect health
"Jesus,  I am not worthy to receive you.  Say but the word and I shall be healed"
(prayer from Communion service)

  Listen

Reflection: Jesus, please give us the faith of the centurion .... please especially give such faith to sick people!

Yesterday afternoon three kind volunteers from the Lutheran Church came to the Dr Jesus Centre for Guitar Lesson Two for some special local students for whom MercyHK is providing accommodation. Before the class, a man out of detention only a few hours, came to the centre for social worker Simon to arrange accommodation for him.

While the class was being held I went with new prison social worker Jane to nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital to apply for a medical report for a prisoner from Africa who is soon to go home. In future this is one of many prisoner jobs which will be done by Jane instead of myself

Isaiah 5: My friend had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. He planted choice vines in it and expected it to produce good grapes.
But it produced only sour grapes. That vineyard is Israel. Its owner is the Lord. That chosen plant is the people of Judah. The Lord expected the people of Israel to produce justice. But those people have produced only bloodshed and injustice. Those people have no time to think about the Lord. They have no interest in what he has done for them. So they are consigning themselves to ruin. The vineyard will be trampled on and become a waste. Invaders will attack Israel. The people of Israel will be taken into exile. All because they rejected the Lord.

"I am the true vine. My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that bears no fruit he cuts away. Every branch that does bear fruit he prunes to make it bear even more" -
Jesus  (John 15.1-2)
My recording of this reading

Psalm 78: Listen, everyone, to my teaching. I will recount the lessons of our history. The things our parents have told us, we will not hide from our children, but will pass them on to the next generation. We want the next generation to know all that the Lord has done for us in the past. May the next generation in turn pass on this knowledge to their own children, so that they too will put their hope in God and never forget all that God has done for us. May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader. God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

Acts 3.1-10: One afternoon about 3pm, Peter and John went to the Temple for prayer. A beggar asked them for money. He was crippled from birth. Peter said to him "I don't have any silver or gold. But I do have something to give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!" Peter then took him by the hand and helped him to stand up. Immediately, his feet and ankles became firm and he could walk. He was so happy he started jumping around. He went into the Temple, praising God
Jesus, there are so many crippled people in the world. Please heal them

Luke 6.46-49: In his teaching, Jesus said "Why do you call me 'Lord', yet do not do what I ask you to do? Anyone who comes to me and listens to my words and puts them into practice is like a man who built his house on a solid foundation. That house was so well built that even floods could not damage it. But anyone who listens and does not put my words into practice is like a man who built his house without a foundation. As soon as floods came, the house collapsed"
Jesus, please help me put your words into practice; help me apply them in my daily life
