Imitating
Pope Francis
Tues Sep 13
Jesus, may Pope Francis and President Xi Jinping meet
up tomorrow in Kazakhstan!!! Interesting,
they came to their jobs at the same time (Pope on March 13, President on March
14, 2013) and never once has either of them ever publicly criticised the
other .... with Pope's plane even being given permission to fly over China
on way to South Korea in 2014! (Stop press:
President Putin also in Kazakhstan today. Maybe a meeting with Pope?)

Isaiah
31-32: How foolish are people who trust in armaments
but never bother to consult the Lord. Help and salvation come from the Lord who
says:
"Once more I will send the good rain.
Then shall the wilderness be fertile land
and fertile land will become a forest. In the wilderness justice will come to live
and integrity in the fertile land.
Integrity will bring peace,
and justice will bring security. My people will live in a peaceful home,
in safe houses, in quiet dwellings."
Lord, please give our world a
bit more peace
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next.
Before the earth or the world
existed,
you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are
like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life,
our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years,
or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our
life,
that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your
love.
Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord,
help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely
Listen

Acts
6.1-7: About this time as the number of disciples
kept growing, the twelve apostles decided to give other men the job of
daily food distribution. The apostles said to the whole group of
believers "It is not right for us to neglect the service of the
word. Therefore you should choose seven men of good reputation, filled
with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom. We give them the food
distribution job, so that we can devote ourselves to prayer
and the service of the word". The whole assembly approved of this idea.
They
chose seven men and presented them to the apostles who prayed over them
with the laying on of hands. The word of the Lord continued to spread. Even
a large number of priests became believers
Jesus, please bless all deacons. Fill them
with the courage and wisdom of the first seven deacons

Luke
9.1-6: Jesus called the 12 apostles together. He
gave them power and authority to cast out devils and to heal sick people.
He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. So they set out and went from village to
village proclaiming the Good News and healing sick people.
Jesus, help me understand how some
people have a special gift for healing sick people....and how I can
better pray to heal sick people

Yesterday at both my Chinese Mass at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei and my English Mass at

McRae as someone who followed the example of the father in yesterday's Gospel

which philosophy has transformed a group of players who finished second last out
of 18 teams last year to a team that has the possibility of playing in a Grand

Isaiah
28-30: God says:
"I will punish priests and prophets who mislead the
people.
Their mouths utter lies. They honor me only with lip-service
while their hearts are far from me. Religion has become just a mental
exercise,
just a series of human laws." The Lord appeals to everyone:
trust in him and cease to do evil. Salvation is found in conversion and
tranquility.
Strength is found in complete trust in the Lord.
Lord, please help us honor you

Psalm
89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord.
Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever.
The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord.
The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our

Acts
5.35-42: One religious leader at the meeting,
Gamaliel,
asked that the apostles be removed from the room. Then he spoke to the
other leaders: "Men of Israel, be careful how you deal
with these people. If this movement of theirs is of human origin, it will
die out of its own accord. But if it comes from God, you will not be able
to destroy it. You might even find yourselves fighting against God".
His advice was accepted. The apostles were
warned, flogged and released. They left the meeting glad to have had the
honor of suffering humiliation for the sake of Jesus. They resumed their
daily preaching, in the Temple and in private homes
Jesus, thank you for times
of suffering for you

Luke
8.40-56: A prayer hall official came to Jesus and
urgently asked him to go to his house, where his 12 year old daughter was
dying.
As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home,
a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched
his clothing. Her bleeding stopped at that moment.
Jesus knew what had happened and said to her
"My daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace".
Before Jesus arrived at the official's house, a messenger arrived
and said to the official "Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the
Master any more". Jesus heard these words and said to the
official "Do not be afraid. Have faith, and she will be ok". At the house Jesus allowed only Peter, James,
John and the girl's parents to go with him inside.
To the mourners Jesus said "Stop crying.
She is not dead, but asleep". They laughed at him, since they
knew she was dead.
Jesus took the little girl by the hand and called to her "Child, get
up". Her spirit returned and she got up at once
Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to
heal sick people and raise the dead

c.f. readings for Sunday 24
Exodus
32: Moses
stayed on the mountain about 40 days. During this time the people told Aaron to
make them a god out of gold. Aaron made
a golden calf and the people worshipped it. On the mountain, God said to
Moses "Go down now, because the people have been unfaithful to me. I will
punish them, but of you I will make a great nation." Moses
pleaded with God not to punish the people. When Moses, carrying the two tablets,
came down the mountain he saw the people partying before the golden calf. He
threw down the tablets and broke them. He smashed the golden calf. The men of
the tribe of Levi were then commissioned to go through the camp and kill many
men. About 3,000 men were killed.
Dear God, please don't let us ever worship anyone or anything except you

Psalm
51: Have
mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My
offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my
defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part
of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me.
Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Timothy 1.12-17: I
thank Christ Jesus our Lord who called me into his service, even though I was an
offender. Mercy was shown me, because I was acting in ignorance. Christ Jesus
came into the world to save offenders. I myself am the greatest offender. Christ
Jesus' patience and mercy to me is available to all offenders. I
am a demonstration model of Christ's mercy
To the eternal King, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen

Luke
15.11-24: Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger
said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come
to me". So the father divided his property between them. A few days later,
the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild
living. When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he
began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm feeding pigs. He
would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything. Then
he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have
more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger. I will leave this place and
go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I
no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid
servants." So he left the place and went back to his father.
While he was still a long way
off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him
in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I
have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called
your son". But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the
best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a
feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to
life. He was lost and is found."
Jesus, please help me understand how much you love
me, no matter what mistakes I make

Please turn your ear to my cry. For my soul is filled with evils.
My life is on the brink of the grave. I am reckoned as one in the tomb.
I have reached the end of my strength. Will your love be told in the grave?

Acts
5.21-33: When the leaders had their big meeting later
that same morning, they sent for the apostles to be brought from prison. The police went to the prison, then came back
and reported to the leaders "We found that the prison was properly
locked, and the guards were on duty. But when we unlocked the door, there
was no one inside". Then a man arrived at the meeting with the
news "At this very moment, the men you imprisoned are now in the
Temple preaching to the people". The police again arrested the apostles and
brought them to the meeting.
When the main religious leader reminded them of his previous warning not
to preach, Peter and the apostles replied "Obedience to God comes
before obedience to men. God raised Jesus up to be the Savior. We are
witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God gives to those who obey
him". This made the leaders so angry that they
wanted to kill the apostles

8.22-25: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to
cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in
the boat.
Then a sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up and said
"Master, we are sinking". Jesus ordered the wind and sea to be
calm.
Straight away the wind and sea were calm. The disciples said to each other
"Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey
him."

Yesterday morning at the Dr Jesus Centre in
Jordan there was the very first meeting of a new group: Indonesian asylum
seekers, most of them mothers with children at school HK... able to come for
morning tea while children are at school.
Yesterday afternoon I took a local drug addict for a walk from Jordan to Tsim Sha Tsui ... to a bookstore where I needed to buy something. We went through beautiful Kowloon Park ... which he had not been to for several years. But he was not able to enter the bookstore because he did not have a phone with the "Leave Home Safe" app. So he waited outside while I got my book. But as we started on the walk back to Jordan I realised that when I had entered the bookstore I had forgotten to click the Leave Home Safe sign!!!

5.17-21:

The leaders had the apostles arrested and put in prison. But that night an angel of the Lord opened the

"Go and stand in the Temple, and tell the people all about this new
Life". The apostles went to the Temple at dawn and
continued preaching

Micah 5.1-4: The
Lord says this: But you, Bethlehem, the least of the clans of Judah, out of
you will be born for me, the one who is to rule over Israel. His origin goes
back to the distant past, to the days of old. The Lord's help will be on hold until
the time when she who is to give birth, gives birth. He will stand and
feed his flock with the power of the Lord, with the majesty of the name of his
God. He himself will be peace.

Romans
8.28-30: We
know that by turning everything to their good, God co-operates with all those
who love him, with all those he has called according to his purpose. They are
the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his
Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers and sisters. He
called those he intended for this; those he called, he justified, and
with those he justified, he shared his glory.

Matthew
1.18-25: This
is how Jesus came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph. But
before they lived together, Mary became pregnant by the power of the Holy
Spirit. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said "Joseph,
descendant of David, do not be afraid to live with Mary as your wife". Her
baby has been conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to
a son. You must name him 'Jesus' ('God saves') because he will save his people
from their sins." Joseph took Mary to his home as his wife. She
gave birth to a son, Jesus.
Dear Jesus, Son
of God, son of Mary, step-son of Joseph, please help me understand how you are
the Saviour of the world

Reflection on the above Bible readings:
If it's Mary's birthday, how come the readings are all about Jesus' birth?! Because Mary is the moon, Jesus is the sun .... all of Mary's light/importance comes from Jesus and reflects Jesus' light/importance. Honoring Mary is a very ancient and very special way of honoring Jesus. Just like in any place/culture we give honor to a person by honoring their parents

Isaiah 20-24:
Trust in the Lord, not in military might.
Israel is going the wrong way in forgetting God's protection. It has no thought for its Maker,
no eyes for him who shaped everything long ago. The reason why the earth is without rain and crops
is that people have forgotten their Creator.
Lord, please increase my trust

86: Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer
for I am poor and needy.
O Lord, you are good and forgiving,
full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you
and glorify your name, O Lord,
you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart
so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my

Acts
5.12-16: All the believers used to meet regularly in an
area of the Temple. Their numbers kept on increasing. So many miracles kept happening that sick
people were laid on beds on the street, in the hope that at least

Luke
8.4-15:
One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field.
Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them.
Some seeds fell on rocky ground.
They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among
thorns.
When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil
and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will
are like the seeds on the path.
They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially
are like the seeds on rocky ground.
As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear
but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure
are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and
put it into practice
are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest
Jesus, please help me be
good seed!
