Tues Sep 20
Yesterday two of MercyHK's five social workers were recovering
from Covid, two others were on study leave, and the fifth was visiting a prison
.... so I was left to "mind the shop" in Temple Street ... where I
welcomed many people who came to the Dr Jesus Centre for assistance. I was also
at the centre last night for a meeting of St
Peter's Association which helps many people in detention and many
ex-offenders.
My
tribute to Queen Elizabeth for whom I have always had the greatest respect

Isaiah
43-45: The Lord says: Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you.
I have called you by your name, you are mine. If you travel over the seas, I will be with
you.
If you travel on great rivers, I will protect you. For I am the Lord, your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your savior. They are ignorant, those who carry around an idol made of wood,
those who pray to a lump of wood that cannot hear. Turn to me and be saved
all peoples of the world.
Lord, please help me be more
aware of your protection
each day and night
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
94: O Lord, Judge of the earth,
how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear".
But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches.
The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart,
God's consolation calms my soul.
Lord, when cares and troubles
increase, please help us to trust in you.
Listen

Acts
8.4-8: The believers who escaped from Jerusalem went
from place to place spreading the Good News. One of these believers was Philip. He preached about Jesus in a
Samaritan town. The Samaritans welcomed Philip's message
because of the miracles he worked. Unclean spirits came out of many possessed
people,
and a number of handicapped people were cured. Such miracles caused great
rejoicing in that town.
Jesus, let there be more miracles in our day,
especially the healing of handicapped people
Listen

Luke
9.28-36: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James
and John
up a high mountain to pray.
On the mountain, while Jesus was praying, his whole appearance changed.
His clothes became brilliant as lightning. The prophets Moses and Elijah appeared
and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for
us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its
shadow.
From the cloud came a voice:
"This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him".
When the voice had finished speaking, the disciples saw only Jesus in his
normal appearance
Jesus, Beloved Son of God,
how good it is to spend time with you in prayer

MercyHK continues to be one of the few NGOs able to provide
immediate accommodation for special cases, especially "after hours".
Last Saturday night, at the request of Caritas, we provided accommodation for a
local man for Sat night and last night .... until a "back at work"
social worker can help him today. Yesterday morning Mother Teresa's sisters
referred a local woman to us ... just for last night ... until she also can be
helped by a social worker today. And yesterday afternoon we gave two nights
accommodation to another domestic helper .... about to return to her own country
...afraid to go to boarding house on safety grounds. Last night we were
assisting about 40 local people and about 20 domestic workers (with 8 children)
with accommodation. Yesterday 9 of our Covid positive cases were transferred to
Penny's Bay govt quarantine centre.
Mid-December
to mid-February I'm hoping to go to a number of countries in South East Asia,
Africa and South America with a media team, as part of my anti-drug campaign.
This projects needs HK$450,000(!). If any dear readers or any of your friends

Isaiah
41-42:
The Lord says to his people Israel:
"I have chosen you. I have not rejected you.
Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Stop being anxious and worried.
I am your God. I give you strength and help. Here is my servant whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit
that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud.
He does not extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the cause of right,
to open the eyes of the blind,
to free captives from prison".
Lord, please help me understand
how "my servant" is Jesus
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed,
he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved.
From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world
are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters,
more glorious than the surging of the sea
is the Lord on high.
Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God.
Truly your decrees are to be trusted.
Holiness is fitting to your house
O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our
Creator
Listen

Acts
7.55 - 8.3: Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked
up and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand. "I can see heaven thrown open", he
said, "and Jesus standing at the right hand of God". At this, the religious leaders at the meeting
covered their ears with their hands. They sent Stephen out of the city and
stoned him. The false witnesses (who were required to throw the first
stones) put down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Paul. As they were stoning him, Stephen prayed
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit". Then he knelt down and prayed
"Lord, do not hold this sin against them". Then he died. Paul
entirely approved of the killing. That day a bitter persecution started against
the church in Jerusalem
and everyone except the apostles fled to the countryside. Paul began working for the destruction of the church. He went from house to house arresting men and
women and sending them to prison
Jesus, thank you for the example of Stephen
who, like yourself, forgave those who were killing him
Listen

Luke
9.22-25: Jesus now began explaining to his disciples
how he would suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said
"If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself,
take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life.
Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this
world
yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing
it in service of others
Listen
Reflection: "Your cross" in today's Gospel basically means "persecution/difficulty for being a Christian" (not sickness)

Amos
1-9: It was God who
formed the mountains and created the wind. The Lord is his name. He says to the
House of Israel: Seek me and you shall live. Do not go to the places of idol
worship. Seek good and not evil, so that you may live. Hate evil and love good. Injustice
and swindling, exploitation of the poor, this is the reason for earthquakes and
disaster.
Lord, please
help me to do good and avoid evil
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
113: Praise, O friends of the
Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now
and for evermore. From
the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord. Who
is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up
the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives
a home and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

Timothy 1.18 - 2.8: My
advice is that, first of all, there should be prayers offered for everyone -
petitions, intercessions and thanksgiving - and
especially for kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to
live religious and reverent lives in peace and quiet. To do this is right, and
will please God our saviour: he wants everyone to be saved and reach full
knowledge of the truth. For there is only one God, and there is only one
mediator between God and mankind, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed
himself as a ransom for them all. He is the evidence of this, sent at the
appointed time, and I have been named a herald and apostle of it and - I am
telling the truth and no lie - a teacher of the faith and the truth to the
pagans.
Luke 16:

Isaiah
36-40: "Console my people, console them"
says the Lord. A voice cries out "Prepare in the
wilderness a way for the Lord.
Make a straight highway for our God across every desert. Let every valley be filled in,
every mountain and hill be laid low.
Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed
and all people will see the Lord's glory." Go up on a high mountain,
joyful messenger to Zion. Shout with a loud voice,
joyful messenger to Jerusalem. Shout to the towns of Judah
"Here is your God". Lord, please help me prepare
your way
into my heart, into my family, into my world
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning,
and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad.
For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength.
You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our
lives,
right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness,
proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting
to love and praise you
Listen

Acts
7.1-54: The meeting of religious leaders had falsely
accused Stephen of being disloyal to Moses. So Stephen gave a long speech, full of loyalty
to Moses. Then he made a stinging attack on the leaders: "You
stubborn people, with your pagan hearts and pagan
ears. You are always
resisting the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors did. Your ancestors killed the prophets who
foretold the coming of the Just One. You have gone further: you
have killed the Just One himself". When the leaders heard these words, they were
very angry and wanted to kill Stephen.
Jesus, Just One from heaven, please don't let
me resist the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit of God, please increase your
influence in my life

Luke
9.18-21: One day Jesus asked his disciples
"Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied "Some people say
you are one of the famous prophets come back to life". Jesus then asked them
"And what about you. Who do you say I am?"
Peter answered
"You are the Anointed One of God"

At the Doctor Jesus centre at 9.30 yesterday morning a happy group of Indonesian women enjoyed an extended morning tea. Their second such gathering. Hopefully can happen each Thursday morning. Then at 12.30, after a break of many long months because of Covid restrictions, 7 special women who work on Temple Street joined 2 volunteers from this outstanding NGO and MercyHK social worker Jane and me for a lovely lunch. Meanwhile our other social workers Simon and Raymond were beginning arrangements for the funeral of Andy, a beloved member of our local drug addicts group who left this world on Tuesday afternoon.

Isaiah 35: Strengthen all weary hands,
steady all trembling knees,
and say to all faint hearts
"Courage! Do not be afraid. The Lord is coming to save you." Then the eyes of
the blind shall be opened,
the ears of the deaf unsealed.
Then the lame shall leap like a deer,
and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy.

91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you.
Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror,

Acts
6.8-15:
One of the seven deacons, Stephen, was filled
with grace and power.
He began to do many miracles. A group of Jews tried to beat Stephen in a
debate. But they could not win, because the Holy Spirit was guiding
Stephen in his speech. The group then got some men to falsely accuse
Stephen of being disloyal to Moses and to God. The group had Stephen arrested and brought
before a meeting of the religious leaders. At the meeting, false witnesses
accused Stephen of speaking against Moses and the Law

Luke
9.10-17: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching
all afternoon, his disciples said to him
"It's getting late and the people need to go and eat".
Jesus answered "They don't need to go. You feed them".
The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish".
Jesus got the people to sit on the grass.
There were about 20,000 of them.
Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his
disciples.
His disciples gave them to the crowd.
Everyone had plenty to eat.
They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.

Readings for Feast of Mary of Sorrows
Hebrews 5.7-9: During his life on earth, Christ
offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud
and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of
death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was
Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he
became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation.

Psalm 31: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Let me never be put to shame. In your justice, set me free, hear me and speedily rescue me. Be a rock of refuge for me, a mighty stronghold to save me, for you are my rock, my stronghold. Into your hands I commend my spirit. It is you who will redeem me, Lord. I trust in you, Lord. You are my God. My life is in your hands, deliver me from the hands of those who hate me.

Luke 2.33-35: As
the child's father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were
being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother: "You
see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in
Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected - and
a sword will pierce your own soul too - so that the secret thoughts
of many may be laid bare."
Recording

John
19.25-27: Near
the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's
sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the
disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, "Woman, this
is your son". Then to the disciple he said, "This is your
mother". And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home

Yesterday afternoon one of our local Chinese drug addicts, Andy, went home to Heaven. In the past month MercyHK social workers have tried tirelessly to help him .... in fact he went to two drug treatment centres and hospital twice, but checked himself out of each place after only a day or so. Last Thursday afternoon I took him for a walk to Tsim Shu Tsui where I needed to get something from a bookstore. At 53 year's old, he shared how he had started using drugs when he was 16. Last Friday two of the social workers and I had lunch with him at the Dr Jesus Centre .... one of many such meals. Previously I had several times visited him in detention. Last night one of MercyHK's social workers visited his family to offer assistance with his funeral. JESUS, PLEASE GIVE ETERNAL REST TO ANDY AND MAY HIS PRAYERS IN HEAVEN HELP US HERE ON EARTH!

Readings
for Feast of
The Cross
Numbers 21: In
order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline.
But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among the
people, and many people died. The people then said to Moses "We have
sinned; please pray for us to save us". Moses prayed for them, and God
heard his prayer. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone
bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live.
Jesus' words (John 3.13):
"The Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him".
Recording

Psalm
78b: May future generations
not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our
ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food
and water for them in
the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion
forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he
brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes.
But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God
raised up David to be their leader. God called him from looking after sheep to
be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us
Recording

Philippians
2.6-11: His state
was divine, yet Christ Jesus did not cling to his equality with God, but
emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and
became as humans are. And being as all humans are, he was humbler yet, even to
accepting death, death
on a cross. But God raised him high, and gave him the name which is
above all other names, so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the
underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus, and that every tongue
should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Recording (song: The
Philippians Hymn)

John
3.13-17: Jesus said
to Nicodemus: "No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down
from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven; and the
Son of Man must be lifted up, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,
so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him". Yes, God
loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who
believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his
Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world
might be saved.
Jesus, only Son of God the Father,
thank you for coming into this world. Please help more and more people believe
in you

4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from
Simple Bible
Isaiah
31-32: How foolish are people who trust in armaments
but never bother to consult the Lord. Help and salvation come from the Lord who
says:
"Once more I will send the good rain.
Then shall the wilderness be fertile land
and fertile land will become a forest. In the wilderness justice will come to live
and integrity in the fertile land.
Integrity will bring peace,
and justice will bring security. My people will live in a peaceful home,
in safe houses, in quiet dwellings."
Lord, please give our world a
bit more peace
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next.
Before the earth or the world
existed,
you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are
like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life,
our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years,
or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our
life,
that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your
love.
Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord,
help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Acts
6.1-7: About this time as the number of disciples
kept growing, the twelve apostles decided to give other men the job of
daily food distribution. The apostles said to the whole group of
believers "It is not right for us to neglect the service of the
word. Therefore you should choose seven men of good reputation, filled
with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom. We give them the food
distribution job, so that we can devote ourselves to prayer
and the service of the word". The whole assembly approved of this idea.
They
chose seven men and presented them to the apostles who prayed over them
with the laying on of hands. The word of the Lord continued to spread. Even
a large number of priests became believers
Jesus, please bless all deacons. Fill them
with the courage and wisdom of the first seven deacons

Luke
9.1-6: Jesus called the 12 apostles together. He
gave them power and authority to cast out devils and to heal sick people.
He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. So they set out and went from village to
village proclaiming the Good News and healing sick people.
Jesus, help me understand how some
people have a special gift for healing sick people....and how I can
better pray to heal sick people

Reflection: Healing sick people is meant to be a basic part of Christian ministry
