Imitating Pope Francis

My other sites/links

Tues Oct 4

Yesterday MercyHK social worker Lucia received 7 (seven!) new domestic worker cases terminated by employers and homeless in the past 24 hours. Today we are expecting another group ....maybe something to do with loosening of quarantine restrictions ... so that employers can more easily find replacements?

I spent yesterday at Tai Lam women's prison. Sad to meet so many new cases involving drug trafficking ....local people as well as people from other countries. Hope to go again today because I ran out of time yesterday to get to all parts of the prison .... my first visit there this year (mainly because of Covid restrictions)

Today a public holiday in HK for the Chung Yeung Festival to remember the dead

c.f. Feast of St Francis of Assisi

Galatians 6: The only thing I can boast about is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. It does not matter if a person is circumcised or not; what matters is for each person to become an altogether new creature. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, who form the Israel of God. I want no more trouble from anybody after this; the marks on my body are those of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you

 My recording of this reading

Francis was a stigmata

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.

Francis is the patron saint of animals

Matthew 11.28: Jesus said to the people: "Come to me, all you who are treated unfairly by unjust religious laws. I will give you peace and justice. Learn from me, and you will know peace, for I am gentle and humble of heart"

Recording

The Prayer of Saint Francis: Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Mon Oct 3

Today I'm due to visit a prison .... my first full-day visit to a prison this year! (... because of Covid restrictions). Hard to believe I used to visit prisons 4 or 5 days a week!

Yesterday morning's Mass and lunch at the Dr Jesus Centre for domestic workers staying at MercyHK centres was a very happy time ... a large group, including 4 small children.... with one dear woman celebrating her 50th birthday yesterday!

Last Saturday was a public holiday for National Day, and tomorrow is a public holiday for the Chung Yeung Festival. Two public holidays in 4 days ... no one complaining!

Isaiah 61: The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up broken hearts, to proclaim liberty to captives, freedom to those in prison, to comfort people who mourn,
to replace their sadness with praise. I exult for joy in the Lord, my soul rejoices in my God, for as the earth makes plants to grow, and as a garden makes seeds spring up, so the Lord will make integrity and praise
spring up in the sight of the nations.

Lord, please give comfort and courage to people who are sad

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Listen

Acts 13.1-3: In the church at Antioch in Syria, the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon, Lucius, Manaen and Paul. One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said "I want Barnabas and Paul set apart for the work to which I have called them". After fasting and prayer, the leaders prayed for Barnabas and Paul with the laying on of hands and sent them off on a missionary journey
Holy Spirit, help me be attentive to your guidance

Listen

Luke 11.27-32: While Jesus was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out "Blessed the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you". Jesus replied "Even more blessed are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice!" Jesus also said "On Judgement day, the Queen of the South will rise up with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from a distant country to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here"
Jesus, greater than Solomon, please help me put your teaching into practice

Listen

Reflection: Jesus' wisdom is greater than that of Solomon ....greater than that of any other wise person in the history of the world. Worth giving our attention to!

c.f. readings for Sunday 27

Minor prophets: Pride of heart leads us astray. See how they are listless, those whose souls are not at peace. Lord, I have heard of all your wonderful deeds in the past. Do them again in our day, Lord! Even when everything seems hopeless, I trust in you Lord, I praise you Lord. Seek the Lord, all you humble people. Seek integrity, seek humility. In the days to come, people will say "We want to go with you, since we have learnt that God is with you". Rejoice heart and soul, people of Jerusalem. See, your king comes to you. He is humble and riding on a donkey.
Dear God, thank you for all the beautiful teachings and stories in  "The Old Testament", ("The First Testament"). I now look forward to your message in "The New Testament" ("The Second Testament")

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

 Listen

2 Timothy 1.6-8: I remind you to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I prayed over you with the laying on of hands. God's gift was not a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power, and love and self-control. Never be ashamed of witnessing to the Lord. Like me and with me, put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News
Jesus, help me put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News

 Listen

Luke 17.5-10: The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." The Lord replied, "Were your faith the size of a mustard seed you could say to this mulberry tree, "Be uprooted and planted in the sea," and it would obey you. Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep, would say to him when he returned from the fields, "Come and have your meal immediately"? Would he not be more likely to say, "Get my supper laid; make yourself tidy and wait on me while I eat and drink. You can eat and drink yourself afterwards"? Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told? So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do, say, "We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty."

Reflection on the above readings: With the apostles let us often pray "Jesus, please increase our  faith"!

Isaiah 60: Arise, shine out, for your light has come. The glory of the Lord is rising on you, though the rest of the world is still in darkness. The nations come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness. People from other lands are coming to you,
bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of the Lord. No more will the sun give you daylight, nor moonlight shine on you, for the Lord himself will be your everlasting light. Then your days of mourning will be ended.

Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Please give more light to my life.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke, my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me.
Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.

Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Listen

Acts 12.20-23: Wearing his robes of state and sitting on a throne, King Herod made a speech to the leaders of Tyre and Sidon. People acclaimed him saying "It is a god speaking, not a man!" At that moment, the angel of the Lord struck him down, because he had not given the glory to God. He was eaten away with worms and died
Jesus, please help us remember that all our talents are a gift from you. "Not to us, Lord, but to your name be the glory"

Listen

Luke 11.9-13: Jesus said to his disciples "Ask, and it will be given to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will open. If children ask their parents for something good, their parents will always give it to them. Even more so  will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him

Isaiah 57-58: Tell my people their faults, tell the House of Jacob its sins. Tell them that their fasting is a sham. Fasting and injustice cannot go together. This is the sort of fast that pleases the Lord: breaking unjust fetters, sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering and clothing the homeless poor. Do this and you will find healing and peace. Do this and the Lord will give strength to your bones.
Lord, please help me do more to help poor people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 101: My song is of mercy and justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

Listen

Acts 12.1-17: About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him

Luke 11.1-4: Once when Jesus had finished praying in private, one of his disciples asked him "Lord, teach us to pray". Jesus replied "Pray like this: Father, may everyone love and honor you. Your kingdom come. Thank you for enough food for today.
Forgive us as we forgive others. Save us in time of trial"

Jesus, please teach me how to pray

Readings for Feast of Michael, Gabriel, Raphael

Tobit 12 (Raphael): When Tobit's banquet was finished, Tobit wanted to thank Raphael for all his help. Only then did Raphael tell Tobit and Tobias that he was an angel sent by God to help them. "I am Raphael, one of the 7 angels who stand ever ready to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord. Never tire of giving God thanks. And never tire of helping the poor." Raphael farewelled them, rose in the air, and left them. They praised and thanked God for all he had done for them.
Dear God, thank you for all your love, all your blessings

My recording of this reading

Psalm 138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!"
Lord, when we remember how much you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day
Recording

Revelation 12 (Michael): Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought the dragon and his angels.
Michael won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven. The great dragon, the serpent, known as the Devil or Satan, was hurled down to earth. His angels were hurled down with him. The dragon began to make war on the children of the Woman - those who obey God and bear witness to Jesus.
Jesus, may your holy angels protect us from Satan

Recording

Luke 1 (Gabriel): In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me".  And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb
Recording

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

Notice how the names Raphael, Michael and Gabriel all end in "el" which means "God"!
When we are sick we can ask Raphael ("Medicine of God") to pray for us. When we are in danger, we can ask Michael ("Who is like God?") to pray for us. When we feel powerless and weak, we can ask Gabriel ("God is my strength) to pray for us.

Isaiah 56: Foreigners who love and serve the Lord - these I will bring to my holy mountain, says the Lord. I will make them joyful in my house of prayer, for my house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations
Lord, please help all peoples of the world know that you are their loving Creator

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.

Acts 11.19-26: Some believers went to Antioch in Syria where they preached the Good News of the Lord Jesus to non-Jewish people. Many non-Jewish people became believers. Barnabas, a good man filled with the Holy Spirit, was sent to Antioch in Syria to encourage the new believers to remain faithful to the Lord. Barnabas brought Paul from Tarsus to Antioch. They stayed in Antioch one year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the believers were first called "Christians"

Luke 10.38-42: Jesus and his disciples visited the home of Martha and Mary. Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened to him speaking.
