Jeremiah
3-6: The country has no rain
because its people have forgotten the Lord. The people refuse to repent
and so the land has many sorrows. Stop and think about the past: which was the
good way to live?
Follow that way now and you will find peace for yourselves and the land
Lord, please bless our
land, by helping us be better people.
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
108: My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing
your praise.
Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn. I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples,
praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens
and your truth to the skies. O Lord, come and deliver us today.
Help us with your right hand. Give us help in difficult situations.
With your help we shall be brave.
Lord, we need your help every
day

Acts
15.1-29:
Some Jewish Christians came to Syrian
Antioch from Judea and said that non-Jewish Christians should be
circumcised. Paul and Barnabas argued against such an idea, and decided to
go to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles there. During a long meeting, Peter reminded everyone
how the Holy Spirit had been poured out on non-circumcised people. James spoke
of how all peoples are meant to be consecrated to the Lord. James then issued a teaching for non-Jewish
believers:
"All we ask you to do is to abstain from food sacrificed to idols,
from blood from the meat of strangled animals,
- from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what is right"
Jesus, please don't let me make unreasonable
demands on other people
Listen

Luke
13.10-17:
One Sabbath day Jesus was teaching in a prayer hall. There
was a woman there who for 18 years had been possessed by a spirit
which left her bent over and unable to stand up straight.
When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said "Woman, you are rid of
your infirmity" and he laid his hands on her. At once she was healed
and could stand up straight, and she glorified God.
Jesus, please heal the people I know who are bent over and can't stand
up straight

Jeremiah
2:
This is what God told Jeremiah to shout out
loud in Jerusalem: "The Lord says:
I remember the love you used to have for me.
But now you have forgotten me. Priests and prophets have no knowledge of me.
King and princes have rebelled against me. Not only have you abandoned me,
you now follow false gods. You have abandoned the fountain of living
water
in exchange for muddy pools."
Lord, please don't let
anyone else or anything else ever replace you as number one in my life
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped,
people from east and west, north and south. Some people wandered in the
desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the
Lord for help.
He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love,
for he fills the hungry with good things. Some people were prisoners in misery and
chains,
living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for
help.
He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness,
for he shatters the iron bars of prisons. Some people were sick on account of their
sins,
unable to eat, and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need.
He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love,
for the wonders he does for us. Some people sailed to the sea in ships
and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need
and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love,
for the wonders he does for us. Whoever is wise should meditate on these
things
and reflect on the love of the Lord.
Thank
you Lord, for your rescuing love

Acts
14.19-27: Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian
Antioch and Iconium.
They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas. The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was
dead, dragged him outside the town. The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As
they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of
Derbe. After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian
Antioch via Lystra and Iconium. In each place they encouraged the
believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in
their lives. In each place they also appointed elders to be
church leaders.
Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they
gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish
people
Jesus, please help me persevere in the faith,
like Paul and Barnabas

Luke
12.35-38: Jesus said to his disciples "Be like people waiting for their master
to return, ready to open the door as soon as he comes and knocks. Be
ready, for I will come at an hour you do not expect. "When someone is given a great deal, of that person more will
be expected"
Jesus, you have given me so much. Please help
me use my gifts and my situation
to do more to help other people

c.f. readings for Sunday 28

Kings 5: Naaman was
an army commander for the king of Aram. Naaman enjoyed success and favor, but he
was a leper. He heard about Elisha and the king sent him to Elisha with
gifts of gold, silver and garments to request healing. When Naaman reached
Elisha's house, Elisha sent him a message: "Bathe 7 times in the Jordan
River." At first Naaman was angry at this message, having expected Elisha
to see and heal him personally. But then he humbly bathed 7 times in the Jordan and
his flesh became clean once more. Elisha declined
Naaman's gifts. But after Naaman left Elisha, Elisha's servant Gehazi caught up
with Naaman and deceitfully obtained some silver. Elisha
confronted Gehazi about this and Gehazi became a leper.
Dear God, please heal everyone who has leprosy
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
98: Sing a new song to the Lord
for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has
made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has
remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the
earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring
out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music.
Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let
the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out
their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He
will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

they in turn will be able to teach others. Put up with your share of

the rules, like a hard-working farmer. Remember the Good News that I carry:
"Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David". On
account of this Good News I am chained up like a criminal. But no-one can

Luke
17.11-19: On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus entered a village where
10 lepers came to meet him. They stood at a distance and called out "Jesus,
Master, take pity on us!" Jesus said to them "Go and show yourselves
to the priests". As they went away, their leprosy disappeared. Seeing that
he was healed, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice. He
threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. This made Jesus say "Were
not all 10 healed? Where are the 9 others?"
Jesus, please don't let me forget to say "thank
you" when someone helps me

Jeremiah
1:
Jeremiah lived in a
village not far from Jerusalem.
Jeremiah's father was a priest. God said to Jeremiah:
"Before I formed you in the womb, I knew
you.
I have appointed you as prophet to the nations." Jeremiah said to God:
"Lord, I do not know how to speak.
I am so young." God then touched
Jeremiah's mouth and said:
"I now put my words into your mouth.
Go and tell the people everything I ask you to speak. Do not be dismayed by
anyone.
I am making you strong. You must confront
Judah's kings, priests and people.
They will oppose you, but will not overcome you,
for I am with you."
Lord, please give special
courage to people who speak your message for the world
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
106: O give thanks to the Lord for he is
good.
His great love is without end. They are happy who do what is right,
who at all times remember what is just. When our ancestors came out of Egypt,
they forgot the greatness of God's love. Each time they strayed, God forgave them.
But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour,
God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.
O Lord, our God, please don't
let us forget your love

Acts
14.8-18: In Lycaonia, there was a man who had never
walked in his life, because his feet were crippled from birth. As he listened to Paul preaching, Paul noticed
him and saw that he had the faith to be cured. Paul said in a loud voice "Get to your
feet! Stand up!"
The crippled man jumped up and began to walk. The local people thought that Paul and
Barnabas must be gods, so Paul said to them "We are only human beings
like you. We have come with Good News to help you turn from empty idols to
the living God who made heaven and earth. It is he who sends you rain and
who makes your crops grow"
Jesus,

Luke
12.22-34: Jesus said to his disciples "Do not
worry about food and clothing.
As regards food, think of the birds.
They don't sow or reap, and they have no homes to store things. Yet God
feeds them.
As regards clothing, think how the flowers grow with a beauty greater than
that of Solomon's clothes. God will look after you more than he looks
after the flowers. So, don't set your hearts on food and
clothing.
Don't go in for worry. Just set your hearts on God's kingdom, then food and clothing will not be a problem.
Where your treasure is, that is where your
heart will be too

Genesis
3: A
creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and
first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why
they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake.
God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday
a member of the human race will defeat you." God said to the
man and woman: "From dust you came, and to dust you will return." The
first man's name was Adam (meaning
"man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning
"life").
Dear God, please help me
understand how evil in the world started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you
My
recording of this reading

Luke 1.46: My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour. He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever.

Acts
1.12: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount
of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half a
kilometer. They gathered
in an upstairs room which they used as a meeting place. The 11 apostles were
Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of
Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time praying. With them were several
women, including
Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus' brothers.

Luke
1.26: In the sixth
month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of
Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named
Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed
by God. You
are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great
and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can
this happen since I am a virgin?" The
angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most
High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her
old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth month". "I am
the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done
for me". And the angel left her

Reflection on the above readings:
Many religions use beads to help pray. Beads help us to remember what we're doing. Beads help us to focus on praying ... even as we ride a bus or walk along the street. My own custom is to pray an Our Father and a Hail Mary at the start of each decade of the Rosary, and then for the 9 other beads to use words from the Bible readings of the day. So for today, the first decade might use a bead or two for each of these words: "the snake tempted them", "they disobeyed God", "Someday a member of the human race will defeat you", "from dust you came, to dust you will return", the first people were named "man" and "woman". Then the Glory be to the Father, then the "O my Jesus" prayer. Then to the next decade

Isaiah 57-58:
Tell my people their faults,
tell the House of Jacob its sins. Tell them that their fasting is a
sham.
Fasting and injustice cannot go together. This is the sort of fast that
pleases the Lord:
breaking unjust fetters,
sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering and clothing the homeless poor.
Do this and you will find healing
and peace.
Do this and the Lord will give strength to your bones.

Psalm
105: Give thanks to the Lord, make known his deeds among all the peoples.
O sing to him, sing his praise.
Tell all his wonderful works. Be proud of his holy name.
Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice. Consider the Lord and his strength.
Constantly seek his face. Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the

how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now.

Acts
14.1-7: Paul and Barnabas went to another city,
Iconium. As usual, their first stop was the local Jewish prayer hall. Many
Jews became believers, as did many non-Jewish people. During their stay in
Iconium, Paul and
Barnabas preached fearlessly for the Lord. And the Lord supported them by
allowing miracles to be worked by them. But their success again aroused opposition,
and they were in danger of being stoned. So they went to Lycaonia and
preached the Good News there
Jesus, please help Gospel workers by allowing
miracles to be worked by them

Luke
12.15-21: Jesus told the people this story: There was a
rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself
"What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my
crops". Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my
barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will
say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many
years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time". But God said to him
"Fool! This very
night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who
will get them?"
So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God
Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with

Psalm
104: Bless the Lord, my soul!
Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot.
You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys.
They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle
and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts
and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months.
The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord.
In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches
and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for
food.
You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is
created.
You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my
life.
May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

having a dirty heart full of extortion and wickedness. At meetings and in the market, you like being
treated as people of importance. But in fact you are like unmarked tombs
that people walk on without knowing it. You expect ordinary people to observe
unreasonable laws, while you excuse yourselves from such laws. You don't care about obtaining real wisdom,
and you prevent others from obtaining wisdom". The leaders were stung by Jesus'
