Tues Oct 18

With Fr Jun I spent yesterday at Lo Wu women's prison. Same issue as at Lai Chi Kok men's prison last week: some sections in quarantine because of Covid cases (... so some visits not possible). Covid in prisons a big concern.

Yesterday a day of frustrations: leaking roof at Dr Jesus Centre in early morning, having to wear face shield at prison, Covid problem at prison, metro problem on way home (see below), computer problems last night. Praise you Jesus for problems!!!

Feast of Saint Luke  ("Luke"/"Acts")

Luke 1: Dear Friend of God, there are already many reports written about Jesus. These reports come from people who were the earliest eyewitnesses and ministers of the Good News. After checking the whole story, I also have decided to write a report, so that you may see for yourself the truth and accuracy of the Good News
Jesus, help me understand your Good News

Recording of this reading

Acts 1: Dear Friend of God, in my first book (the Gospel of Luke) I wrote about everything Jesus did until the day he was taken up to heaven. For 40 days after his death, he appeared to his apostles many times, and taught them about the kingdom of God. He told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for what the Father had promised: "You will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit"
Jesus, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, increase your influence in my life

Mon Oct 17

A very long but happy day yesterday at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan: the usual Sunday Mass and lunch for domestic helpers who stay at MercyHK hostels, then a special 5pm gathering for drug addicts with guest speaker Pastor Calvin Li (himself a former addict and now a prison chaplain!). Parts of both gatherings were attended by a media team from W5 (Canada's "Sixty Minutes").

Jeremiah 16-17: The Lord will bring back Israel's exiles, back to the land he gave to our ancestors. Lord, my strength, my stronghold, all the nations will come to you and acknowledge that you alone are God in all the earth.
Let all the peoples praise you, O God, let all the peoples praise you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 114,115: When Israel came out of Egypt, Jacob's descendents from an alien people, Judah became the Lord's temple,
Israel became his kingdom. Descendents of Israel, trust in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. To you may the Lord grant increase, to you and all your children. May you be blessed by the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth

Thank you, Lord, for all your blessings

Listen

Acts 16.25-37: Late that night in prison, Paul and Silas were praying and singing God's praises, while the other prisoners listened to them. Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison. All the doors opened, and the chains fell from all the prisoners. The main jailer drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted to him "Don't hurt yourself. We are all still here". Trembling, the jailer threw himself at the feet of Paul and Silas. Then he escorted them out of the prison asking "What must I do to be saved?" They said "Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and both you and your household will be saved". They explained the word of God to him and his family. He washed their wounds and then they "washed his wounds" by baptizing him and all his household. They had a meal together in the jailer's home, to celebrate the family's conversion to belief in God
Jesus, let more people know the joy of conversion

Listen

Luke 15.11-24: Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come to me". So the father divided his property between them. A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living.

When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm  feeding  pigs. He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants."

So he left the place and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son".

But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found."
Jesus, please help me understand how much you love me, no matter what  mistakes I make

Reflection: The father in the Gospel was not interested in his son's mistakes .... but interested only in having his son safely home

c.f. Readings for Sunday 29

Exodus 17: In another place the Israelites were attacked by the Amalekites. Moses prayed while Joshua led the people in battle. As long as Moses kept his arms raised up in prayer, the Israelites were winning. But when Moses let his arms down, the Amalekites started winning. So Aaron and Hur got Moses to sit on a rock and they supported his hands until sunset.
Joshua and the people then won the battle.

Dear God, please help us understand the power of prayer

My recording of this reading

Psalms 120, 121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever.
Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night

Recording

2 Timothy 3.12-16: Anyone who tries to live a sincere Christian life will be persecuted. Stay faithful to what you have been taught and know to be true. Remember who your teachers were, and how, ever since you were a child, you have known the Scriptures. From the Scriptures you can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and can be used for teaching, for refuting error, for guiding people's lives and teaching them to be holy
Jesus, please give all Christians, especially pastors, a passion for the Scriptures

Recording

Luke 18.1-7: Jesus told his disciples a story about the need to pray continually and never lose heart: There was a judge who had neither fear of God nor respect for people. In the same town there was a widow who kept asking the judge for justice against someone who had wronged her. For a long time the judge refused to help her, but at last he said to himself "I must give this widow her rights or she will pester me to death". Even more so God will see that justice is done for those who cry out to him for help day and night, even if he delays to help them
Jesus, please give me the perseverance to pray each day

Jeremiah 15: Alas, my mother, for you gave me birth to be a man of strife and dissension for everyone. I neither lend nor borrow, yet everyone curses me. Lord, remember how I suffer insult for your sake. When I heard your word, I devoured it.
Your word was my delight and the joy of my heart for you called me to speak your word.

Lord, please increase my love for your word, my love for the Bible

My recording of this reading

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

Listen

Acts 16.16-24: One day we met a slave girl who made a lot of money for her owners by telling fortunes. The girl followed us each day shouting "These are the servants of God". Paul said to the spirit possessing her "I order you, in the name of Jesus Christ, to leave her". The spirit immediately left her, but her owners were angry that she could no longer tell fortunes. The owners seized Paul and Silas and dragged them to court, saying to the magistrate "These people are causing a disturbance in our city". A crowd supported the owners in calling for their punishment. They were given many lashes and put into prison with their feet in irons
Jesus, please help Christians who are suffering in prison because they announced your message

Listen

Luke 14.12-14: Jesus said to the meal guests "When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, family, or rich neighbors. Rather, when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind. That they cannot repay you means you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again"
Jesus, help me do more to help poor people

Jeremiah 12-14: Lord, you are in our midst, we are called by your name. Please give us help and strength in this time of trouble. Wherever I go I see sadness and despair. Our land has been invaded by the foreign soldier. If I go into the countryside, I see men killed by the sword. If I go into the city, I see people sick with hunger. O God, you are our hope. For your name's sake, please forgive us and help us.
Lord, please help people whose countries are under occupation by foreign soldiers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord, who take delight in his commands. The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for others. Such people are generous, merciful and just. They take pity and help those in need. They conduct their affairs with integrity. Open-handed they give to the poor. Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.
Lord, please help me do more for the poor

Listen

Acts 16.11-15: We went to a number of towns in Macedonia. In Philippi, the Jews had no prayer hall. They met on the river bank. We went there one Sabbath and preached to the women who were meeting there. One of these women was Lydia. The Lord opened her heart to what Paul was saying. She and her whole household were baptized.
Jesus, open the hearts of more people to accept your word

Listen

Luke 14.7-11: At the leader's house, Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of honor. He said to them "When someone invites you to a meal, do not choose a seat of honor. Rather, when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there. Maybe your host will ask you to move to a seat of honor. Everyone who exalts himself, will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself, will be exalted"
Jesus, please help me  choose the lowest place

Jeremiah 8-11: Jeremiah said sorrowfully: My people have forgotten God. My people ignore God. My people follow false gods. My people have no time for the real God. Lord, you know how weak we are. Correct us gently, Lord.
Correct us gently, Lord, correct us gently

My recording of this reading

Psalm 111: I will thank the Lord with all my heart. Great are the works of the Lord, to be pondered by all who love him. His goodness stands firm for ever. The Lord is compassion and love. His precepts are for all peoples and all times. He is to be honored by all nations. To love and honor the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
Dear Lord, please help me to love and honor you every day

Listen

Acts 16.1-10: In the town of Lystra, Paul recruited Timothy, whose mother was a Jewish Christian and whose father was Greek. As they visited one town after another, they announced the decisions taken in Jerusalem about what Jewish practices to follow. The local churches continued to grow strong in faith as well as grow in numbers. One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and said "Come across to Macedonia and help us". We immediately crossed the sea to Macedonia (Luke was now with Paul)
Jesus, if someone asks me for help, may I say yes

Luke 14.1-6: One Sabbath day Jesus went for a meal to the house of a religious leader. In the house Jesus saw a man with dropsy. Jesus asked the leaders present there "Is it against the Law to cure a man on the Sabbath?" But they remained silent. Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away. Then Jesus said to the leaders "Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, will not pull him out on a Sabbath day?" Again  the leaders remained silent
Jesus, help me understand that "the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath"

Jeremiah 7: At the gate of the Temple in Jerusalem, Jeremiah proclaimed the word of the Lord: "You people of Judah who come here to worship, amend your behavior and actions, and then I, the Lord,  will meet you here in this Temple. Do not exploit the stranger, the orphan and the widow. Do not follow alien gods, do not break the Commandments. If you don't care about bad behavior and yet keep on coming to my Temple for worship, your worship is useless and you are turning this Temple into a robbers' den. This nation refuses to listen to the Lord. Sincerity has vanished since worship and behavior are not related."
Lord, please help me "practise what I preach"

My recording of this reading

Psalm 109, 110: O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with  words of hate. They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for good. While I pray for them, they show me hatred. I have become an object of scorn. Help me, Lord my God.
Lord, when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

Listen

Acts 15.36-40: Some time after this, Paul said to Barnabas "Let's revisit the towns where we preached the word of the Lord". Barnabas suggested taking John Mark with them, but Paul opposed this, since John Mark had deserted them on the previous trip when the situation became dangerous. After a violent argument, Paul and Barnabas split up. Barnabas went with John Mark to Cyprus. Silas joined Paul for his next journey
Jesus, at your Last Supper  you prayed  for the unity of your followers. Help us avoid arguments

Listen

Luke 13.18-35: Jesus said to the people "The kingdom of God is like a tiny seed planted in the ground. It grows and becomes a big tree, and the birds live in its branches. The kingdom of heaven is like yeast mixed with flour until the flour
is leavened all through. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the prophets who are sent to you. How often have I longed to gather your children, as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you refused"
