Tues Oct 25

Hello from Sheung Shui where I'm attending the monthly OMI gathering. I love the atmosphere of Temple Street, but sometimes it's good to have a break ....and St Paul's Retreat House in SS is on a beautiful location with lots of trees and gardens ... and an absence of high rise buildings means that the stars (and sometimes the moon) can be seen! After the gathering finishes at midday I'm due to go with Fr Jun to nearby Lo Wu women's prison.

Jeremiah 32: Jerusalem was about to be captured by the Chaldaeans. But God promised that Jerusalem would recover its freedom.
As a sign that Jerusalem would be free again, God told Jeremiah to buy a field. People thought Jeremiah was crazy. But through this
action Jeremiah delivered God's message: This city and this land are now a waste, but soon people will again buy land and build homes
in freedom and safety.

Lord, when things get really bad, please increase our trust in you that you will turn things around in our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalm 122: I rejoiced when I heard them say "Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. For the peace of Jerusalem pray "Peace be to your homes." For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good.
Lord, may your peace be in our hearts and homes

Listen

Acts 18.5-11: In Corinth, Paul was rejected by the Jews, so he spent his time preaching to non-Jewish people. Many Corinthians became believers and were baptized. One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: "Do not be afraid to speak out, nor allow yourself to be silenced. I am with you". So Paul stayed in Corinth for 18 months preaching the word of God
Jesus, give Christians more courage to speak your message

Listen

Luke 18.18-23: A young man from a prominent family asked Jesus "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replied "You know the commandments: you must not commit adultery, you must not kill, you must not steal, you must honor your father and mother". The man answered "I have kept all these commandments all my life". Jesus then said "There is still one higher goal: sell all  you own, give the money to the poor, then come follow me", But when the man heard this he was very sad, because he was very rich
Jesus, please help me follow you the way you want me to follow you

Reflection: Mother Teresa, teaching in a well-off school in Calcutta, was called to a higher goal .... to work with the poor

Happy Diwali today! My 2013 Diwali reflection

A busy but happy day at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan yesterday: Mass and lunch for domestic workers who stay at MercyHK shelters; then a meeting for kind people who visit prisoners (from Voice for Prisoners, St Peter's NGO and others); then an evening meal with old friends from Notre Dame Parish in Kowloon City; then a gathering of Filipinas (several of whom, on their day off, visit prisoners).

Today I'm due to attend an overnight OMI gathering at Sheung Shui, after which Fr Jun and I hope to visit nearby Lo Wu women's prison.

Jeremiah 30-31: God told Jeremiah to tell the people these words: "I will restore you to health. I will heal your wounds. I have loved you with an everlasting love. Strong and constant is my love for you. I will bring back the exiles and save them. I will change their sorrow into joy. The days are coming when I will make a new agreement with my people. Deep within their hearts I will plant love of my Law. I will be their God and they will be my people. I will forgive all their sins."
Lord, please plant love of you deep within my heart

My recording of this reading

Psalms 120, 121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever.
Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night

Listen

Acts 18.1-4: Paul left Athens and went to the city of Corinth. He met a Jewish couple who had recently left Italy when the Emperor Claudius expelled all Jews from Rome. The couple were tentmakers, like Paul himself. Paul stayed with them and they worked together. Each Sabbath Paul preached in the prayer halls, trying to convert Jews as well as non-Jewish people
Jesus, thank you for the example of Paul who worked to support himself and didn't live off others

Listen

Luke 18.15-17: People brought little children to Jesus, for him to bless them. The disciples told the people to go away and not bother Jesus. But Jesus called the children to him and said "Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. I tell you, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child, will never enter it"
Jesus, please give all children the chance to know and love you

Listen

Reflection: On the mountain of Transfiguration, Peter (a fisherman) offered to make a tent for Jesus, Moses and Elijah. Jesus apparently declined the offer. But Paul was a professional tent maker. Maybe if he'd been on the mountain Jesus might have accepted the offer of a tent?!

c.f. readings for Mission Sunday

Isaiah 2: In the days to come, the mountain of the Lord's Temple will be specially blessed. All the nations will come to it and say: "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, that he may teach us his ways so that we may walk in his paths". When they learn the ways of the Lord, then the nations will hammer their swords into ploughshares, their spears into sickles. Nation will not lift sword against nation, there will be no more training for war. O House of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!
Lord, please help world leaders do more for peace in our world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

 Listen

Revelation 1.4-8: From John, to the seven churches of Asia province: grace and peace to you from him who is, who was, and who is to come, from the seven spirits at his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the First-born from the dead, the Ruler of the kings of the earth. Jesus Christ loves us and has washed away our sins with his blood, and made us a line of kings and priests to serve his God and Father. It is he who will come on the clouds. Everyone, in every part of the world, will see him. All hearts will be moved by his coming "I am the beginning and the end", says the Lord God. "I am the originator and goal of all things"
Jesus, please help more and more people know who you are

John 17.1-21: After saying many things to his disciples at the meal, Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed "Father, my time has come. Give eternal life to everyone you have entrusted to me. Eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I have glorified you on earth, and finished the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, it is time for you to glorify me with the glory I had with you before the world existed. Protect those you have given me. Protect them from Satan. Consecrate them in the truth. As you sent me into the world, so I am sending them into the world. May all my followers be united, so that the world will believe it was you who sent me".
Jesus, please protect our world from lies and deception. Please bless people who witness to the truth in difficult situations

Reflection on the above readings: Truth is often a casualty in today's world of fake and controlled news. Christians are people who try to be truthful in their own lives and witness for the truth to others

At yesterday afternoon's gathering at the Dr Jesus Centre for homeless and formerly homeless people, we listened to Stephania Ling, a remarkable HK lady who recently spent more than 3 years working in South Sudan as an English teacher. Her talk reminded us that although HK has many problems and difficulties, they are nothing compared with places like South Sudan where so many people face a daily battle to get enough food for their families. This YouTube video (in Cantonese) is about Stephania

Jeremiah 24-29: For 23 years Jeremiah spoke the message of the Lord, calling on people to do good and turn away from evil. But the people, especially the leaders, refused to listen to Jeremiah. They eventually arrested Jeremiah and planned to kill him. Jeremiah also sent a message to the exiles in Babylon. But they too refused his message.
Lord, please give me some of Jeremiah's courage and faith

My recording of this reading

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

Listen

Acts 17.29-34: Paul continued speaking to the intellectuals: "We have no excuse for thinking that the Creator looks like something carved in gold, silver or stone. God overlooked that sort of thing when we were ignorant. But now he is telling everyone to repent and believe in Jesus raised from the dead". Some intellectuals laughed at Paul. A few became believers
Jesus, please give intellectuals the humility to believe in you

Listen

Luke 18.9-14: Some people prided themselves on being virtuous, and despised others. Jesus told them this story: Two men went to the Temple to pray, one a religious leader, the other a social outcast. The leader stood there and said "I thank you, God, that I am not greedy, unjust and adulterous like other people such as this outcast here". The outcast did not even raise his eyes, but beat his breast and said "God, be merciful to me, a sinner". The outcast, I tell you, went home a friend of God. The leader did not. People who exalt themselves will be humbled. People who humble themselves will be exalted
Jesus, be merciful to me, a sinner

Jeremiah 21-23: Jerusalem was under siege by the Chaldaeans. The Lord told Jeremiah to tell the leaders of Jerusalem to surrender. But the leaders of Jerusalem did not obey Jeremiah's words. So the Lord got Jeremiah to say these words: "Woe to the shepherds who allow my sheep to be scattered and killed. You have not taken care of my sheep. Therefore I will raise up a leader who will be wise and just. He will be a good shepherd of my people."
Lord, please help our leaders to be good shepherds

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Acts 17.16-28: In Athens, Paul was sad see so much idol worship. Each day he talked to as many people as he could about Jesus. He was invited to a meeting of intellectuals. He said to them "The Creator of the world does not make his home in shrines made by human hands. He wants everyone to know him as the living God. It is in him that we live and move and have life".
In its mother's womb, a baby lives and moves and has life. The universe is like a giant womb, God's womb, in which we live and move and have life. Jesus, please help me understand Paul's words

Luke 18. 1-7: Jesus told his disciples a story about the need to pray continually and never lose heart: There was a judge who had neither fear of God nor respect for people. In the same town there was a widow who kept asking the judge for justice against someone who had wronged her. For a long time the judge refused to help her, but at last he said to himself "I must give this widow her rights or she will pester me to death". Even more so God will  see that justice is done for those who cry out to him for help day and night, even if he delays to help them.
Jesus, please give me the perseverance to pray each day

MercyHK's 2 new kittens had a long day yesterday in their large, make that huge, new cage at the front of our 191 Temple Street centre .... attracting many admirers. I'm sure the kittens slept well last night after being on the ball all day! One of the kittens is now called "Siu Ping" after Deng Xiao Ping who famously said "it doesn't matter what colour a cat is ... so long as it catches mice"!

And life will get busier for all at the centre from today when Mrs Fong's new shop opens directly opposite 191. Her shops usually have a long line of customers throughout the day waiting to be served

Yesterday afternoon at the next door Dr Jesus Centre there was the usual gathering for local drug addicts, and last night's usual gathering for Nepal drug addicts had a record turnout of 16.

Jeremiah 18-20: Some officials decided to get rid of Jeremiah. They did not want to listen to his message any more. "Come on", they said, "let us make a case against him." Jeremiah prayed to God: "Lord, you know that people are plotting against me. Please help me and keep me safe." One of the Temple priests had Jeremiah beaten and put in stocks for a day near the Temple. Again Jeremiah prayed to God: "You have seduced me, Lord. You have told me to proclaim a harsh message for the people. This has made me a laughing-stock. Being your messenger has caused me insult  all the day long. At one stage I even thought of not speaking your message any more. But then I felt a fire burning in my heart. I could not stop thinking of you.
I just had to speak your message."

Lord,  please increase my love for you. Please give me more courage to speak your message to my family, friends and people I meet

Acts 17.10-12: That night Paul and Silas left for the town of Beroea. At the local prayer hall, the Jews were very open-minded and they warmly welcomed the word of the Lord. Every day they studied the Scriptures to check that Paul's words were true. Many Jews and many non-Jewish people became believers
Jesus, please help people be open-minded when hearing your message

Luke 17.11-19: On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus entered a village where 10 lepers came to meet him. They stood at a distance and called out "Jesus, Master, take pity on us!" Jesus said to them "Go and show yourselves to the priests". As they went away, their leprosy disappeared. Seeing that he was healed, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. This made Jesus say "Were not all 10 healed? Where are the 9 others?
Jesus, please don't let me forget to say "thank you" when someone helps me

For the past few years the MercyHK centre at 191 Temple Street, like most premises in Temple Street, has been bothered by rats which, usually at night after lights out,  make light work (no pun intended) of anything edible ... even packaged items. Yesterday our social worker Raymond delivered an answer to the rats: two kittens whose job it will be to secure 191.

Having spent last Monday at Lo Wu women's prison I needed to spend yesterday at the desk on many jobs associated with the visit. Was good to stay inside since HK experienced its coolest weather for some time ... thanks to a departing typhoon in the neighborhood.

Jeremiah 18: The Lord told Jeremiah to go to the house of the potter. At the potter's house, Jeremiah watched the potter working. Sometimes a vessel he was making wasn't shaped properly. So the potter would take the clay and start again and shape the clay into a new vessel. Then the Lord told Jeremiah: "The House of Israel is clay, I am  the potter. I  keep on trying to form Israel into a holy nation."
Lord, you are the potter, we are the clay - the work of your hands. Please mould us into what you want us to become.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Listen

Acts 17.1-9: Paul and his friends next went to the town of Thessalonika. On three Sabbaths,  Paul spoke at the local prayer hall, explaining how Jesus is the Anointed One. Some Jewish listeners and many non-Jewish people became believers.
But the religious leaders, out of jealousy, stirred up a gang from the market place.
The gang dragged some believers to the city council. The leaders shouted "The people who have been turning the whole world upside down, have come to our town. They claim there is another emperor, Jesus". The believers were eventually allowed to go on bail
Jesus, please don't let jealous people stop anyone from becoming a Christian

Luke 16.19-26: Jesus told this story to the people: There was a rich man who used to dress in expensive clothes and feast magnificently every day. At his gate there was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to eat scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In his torment in Hell, the rich man looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus at his side. So the rich man cried out "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames". "My son", replied Abraham, "remember that during your life, good things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here, while you are in agony"
Jesus, please help me understand how I should do more to help poor people

Feast of Saint Luke  ("Luke"/"Acts")

Luke 1: Dear Friend of God, there are already many reports written about Jesus. These reports come from people who were the earliest eyewitnesses and ministers of the Good News. After checking the whole story, I also have decided to write a report, so that you may see for yourself the truth and accuracy of the Good News

Acts 1: Dear Friend of God, in my first book (the Gospel of Luke) I wrote about everything Jesus did until the day he was taken up to heaven. For 40 days after his death, he appeared to his apostles many times, and taught them about the kingdom of God. He told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for what the Father had promised: "You will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit"
