Happy
All Saints Day!
When
the Saints Go Marching In!
Yesterday I spent 5 hours at Lai Chi Kok men's prison ...sad to
meet new drug trafficking cases. As usual after a day at a prison, I came away
with a load of homework to do over the next few days.
From today MercyHK has a new team member, Agnes Kwan, whose job
is to be responsible for the Dr Jesus Centre. I have given Agnes the name
"M & M" since her job includes serving and helping people in the
meeting section of the centre (like Martha in the Gospel) and praying with and
for people in the prayer section of the centre (like Martha's sister Mary in the
Gospel)! Welcome Agnes to the team

c.f. Readings for All Saints Day
Revelation 7.9-17: I saw a
huge number, impossible to count, of people
from every nation, race, and language. They were standing in front of the
throne, with palms in their hands. They shouted: "Victory
to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb". One
of the elders told me who these people are: "These are the people who have
been through the great persecution. They now serve God day and night in his
sanctuary. The Lamb is their Shepherd. He leads them to springs of living water.
God has wiped away all tears from their eyes"
Jesus, please help sorrowing people who are crying today
My
recording of this reading

Psalm 24: The
Lord's is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. It is he
who set it on the seas; on the waters he made it firm. Who shall climb the
mountain of the Lord? Who
shall stand in his holy place? People with clean
hands and pure hearts, who desire not worthless things. They shall receive
blessings from the Lord and reward from the God who saves them. Such are the
people who seek him, seek the face of the God of Jacob.
God, by living a good life, help me to seek your face

1
John 3.1-3: Think of
the love that the Father has lavished on us by letting us be called God's
children. And God's love has even more in store for us in the future: we
shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. This is why
we must try to live good lives. We must try to be as good as Christ.
Jesus, please help me be more like you

Matthew
5.1-12: Jesus said
to the crowds: Blessed are poor
and simple of heart people. They belong to the kingdom of heaven. Blessed
are people who are going through great sorrow. Their hearts will be
filled with peace. Blessed
are people who lead just and honest lives. They will see the victory of
goodness. Blessed
are people who show mercy to others. God will be merciful to them. Blessed
are people who have a clean heart. They will see God. Blessed
are people who are peacemakers. They are God's children. Blessed
are people who are persecuted for the cause of right. They will receive a
great reward in heaven.
Jesus, please help me be merciful and
kind and just

Lamentations
1-5:
The roads to Zion are in mourning.
No one comes to her festivals now. Jerusalem is a captured city,
a city of ruins. All you who pass this way, look and see.
Is there any sorrow like mine? My eyes are wasted away from crying
as I see children dying of starvation. Yet deep in my heart there is hope
that the Lord will rescue us
from this calamity which our sins have caused. The favors of the Lord are not just something of the past.
His kindness is for the present, even in times of despair. Every morning there are signs of his
kindness,
and so I will continue to hope in him for help. Lord, forgive us
for abandoning you.
Do not abandon us.
Lord, especially when I'm in
trouble,
please help me to keep trusting in you for help
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
127: If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders
labor. If the Lord does not watch over the city,
in vain does the watchman keep vigil. Success comes not from earlier rising or from
going later to rest,
but from the Lord's blessing. Success is from the Lord
who blesses the womb of his beloved while she sleeps. Truly, children are a gift from the Lord,
a blessing, the fruit of the womb.
Lord, many people these days
don't want children. Please help such people understand that children are
a blessing

Acts
20.7-12: In the city of Troas Paul and his group
joined the local believers for the Breaking of Bread one Saturday night. Paul's sermon went on till the middle of the
night. As Paul went on and on, a young man who was sitting on the
window-sill, went to sleep and fell to the ground three floors below. He was dead when they picked him up. Paul went
down to the boy and prayed over him. The boy came back to
life. Paul kept on talking till
dawn. That same day

Luke
19.41-48: As Jesus caught sight of Jerusalem, he shed
tears over it and said "How I wish you had accepted my message of
peace. You will be totally destroyed, because you rejected God's offer of
grace". Jesus then went into the Temple and drove out
the sellers. According to the Scripture", he said, "my house
will be a house of prayer. But you have turned it into a robbers'
den". Each day Jesus taught in the Temple. The leaders wanted to
do away with him, but they didn't know how to, since most of the
ordinary people had great respect for Jesus

Wisdom
10-19: Wisdom has
been present in the world since the beginning of time. Wisdom has always been a
close friend of good people. Wise
people see God in the beauty of creation. Foolish people are blind to
God's presence in creation. Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise
people try to be good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness

recording of this reading

Psalm
145: I will give you glory, O God
my king. I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all
praise.
His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall
speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow
to anger, abounding in love. How
good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. All your
creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love. The Lord
is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all
who fall and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to
you and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call
him, who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's
holy name, for ever, for ages unending.
Thank you, Lord, for your love. Thank you for your love

Luke
19.1-9: In
Jericho there was a wealthy man named Zacchaeus, a senior tax collector. He
wanted to see what kind of person Jesus was. But because of his short stature he
couldn't see over the crowd. So he climbed a tree. Jesus saw him up the tree and
said "Zacchaeus, come
down, because I will stay at your house today". Zacchaeus
hurried down and welcomed Jesus warmly. People complained "He's gone to
stay at the house of an outcast". Zacchaeus replied
"Sir, I am going to give half of my property to the poor. And if I have
cheated anyone, I'll pay them back fourfold". Jesus said to him "Today
salvation has come to this house"

Meanwhile our social worker Lucia has been run off her feet the past few days ... and nights ... with new cases involving domestic workers .... two of them needing support at police stations for filing complaints against employers.

Jeremiah
46-52: Jeremiah predicted that the powerful nations involved in
Israel's capture would all fall:
the Egyptians, the Philistines, the Moabites, the Ammonites,
the Babylonians and others. Jeremiah also reminded Israel to rely on the help of the Lord
more than the help of other nations: "Our redeemer is strong. The Lord is his name.
He will bring peace to the world".
Lord, help us to rely on you
more than on human help
Psalm
126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,
it seemed like a dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us.
Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for
the sowing.
They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all
people who are sorrowful as they work

Acts
19.23 - 20.1: In Ephesus there was a silversmith who
employed many craftsmen making shrines of the local idol, Diana. The
silversmith called a meeting of the city's silversmiths and said to them
"Not just here in Ephesus, but in many parts of the region, this man
Paul has converted many people with his argument that gods made by hand
are not gods at all. This is a threat to our trade". A mob was formed and dragged two of Paul's
companions to a local theatre. The town clerk eventually calmed the mob
and dismissed them. By now Paul had decided to leave Ephesus. He
went to Greece and spent three months there

Luke
19.28-40: When Jesus came near to Jerusalem, he
sent two disciples to a nearby village to get a donkey colt which no one
had ever ridden. Jesus sat on the colt and began the descent
from the Mount of Olives down the hill to Jerusalem. The disciples spread their clothes on
the road,
and joyfully praised God for all the miracles they had seen. They cried
out "Blessings on the King who comes in
the name of the Lord!" Some religious leaders told Jesus to stop the
disciples from calling out. Jesus replied "If these keep silence, the
stones will cry out"
Jesus, you who came in the name of the Lord,
we praise and love you

Yesterday at the Dr Jesus Centre there was a very happy birthday party/lunch for a large group of Indonesian women and their children. After which I joined Eddie Chan and some visitors to prepare for a function for World Day of the Poor to be held at St Mary's Parish, Hung Hom, on Sunday Nov 13. Then I went to nearby Queen Elizabeth to visit a young man who is fighting cancer ....in bed 27 on Oct 27. The man asked me to take him some beef noodles ... so I went to a supermarket on the way to the hospital and bought several packets of beef noodles .... only to find out at the hospital that the man was of course talking about cooked noodles!

Jeremiah 37-45: Jeremiah was arrested and put into a muddy well to
die.
But a good official persuaded the king to free Jeremiah. When the Chaldaeans captured Jerusalem,
they sent many people to Babylon as exiles. Jeremiah was spared from exile
and he kept trying to get the people to accept defeat as God had told them.
But most of the people would not listen to Jeremiah,
even though all his prophecies about defeat had come true. God protected the good officials who had helped Jeremiah.

Acts
19.11-20:
So remarkable were the miracles worked by God
through Paul, that even handkerchiefs which had touched him,
were taken to the sick, and they were healed and evil spirits came out of
them. Some believers admitted how they had practised
magic. They collected their expensive books on magic and burnt them in
public. Things like these helped the word of the Lord
to continue spreading

and we shall make our home in your heart"

Jeremiah 36:
God told Jeremiah to write down
all the messages he had spoken for God. So Jeremiah got Baruch to make a written record of all his messages.
Baruch wrote the messages on a scroll. Some good officials took the scroll to the king to read.
The officials hoped the king would obey the words of the scroll. The king had the scroll read aloud for him.
As each section was read, the king used a knife to cut off the section,
and then threw the section into a fire. Eventually the whole scroll was burnt.
The king then issued an order for Jeremiah to be arrested. God protected Jeremiah and did not allow him to be arrested for the
time being.
God also told Jeremiah to have another scroll made.
Lord, please move world
leaders' hearts
to be open to your message of justice and peace and love

Psalm
124: "If the Lord had not been on our
side",
this is Israel's song. If the Lord had not been on our side
when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive
when they were angry with us. Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become
a prey for their teeth. Our life, like a bird, has escaped
from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

19.8-10: For three months, Paul went to the Jewish
prayer hall in Ephesus, speaking boldly about the kingdom of God. When some Jews strongly attacked
the Way, he
stopped going to the prayer hall, and began daily discussions in a lecture room.

result that people from many places, both Jews and non-Jews, were able to

18.35-43: As Jesus entered Jericho, there was a blind

Nazareth was passing by. So he called out "Jesus, Son of David,
have pity on me". Some people told him to be quiet, but he just
shouted all the louder "Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me". Jesus stopped and asked him
"What do you
want me to do for you?"
He replied "Sir, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Receive your sight.
Your faith has saved you".
Instantly his sight returned, and he followed Jesus, praising God.

After the overnight O.M.I. gathering finished at Sheung Shui yesterday around midday, Fr Jun and I went to nearby Lo Wu women's prison for a few hours....where we were sad to meet yet more former domestic helpers, as well as local women, who are facing drug trafficking charges ... after being deceived by "friends" (on behalf of Drug Lords).
On the train back to Jordan I took part in a zoom meeting with the NGO Clean Start in Nairobi, Kenya ... at whose centre there will be some functions in early January for former HK prisoners and for families of people currently in prison in HK ...with the hope that publicity will help stop others from taking drugs to HK. I've also been invited to join a Mass at a prison in Niarobi.
Last night I attended the monthly St Vincent de Paul meeting at Yau Ma Tei St Paul's Parish.

Jeremiah 33-35:
Most of the people and their leaders ignored God's message
delivered by Jeremiah. But one group listened to Jeremiah and obeyed God's message:
that group was the nomad clan of Rechabites. At God's command Jeremiah invited them to a meal near the
Temple
and invited them to drink wine. But they replied that they had been told by God
never to own property or build houses or be farmers or drink wine. Jeremiah then spoke to the people watching the
Rechabites:
"See how this clan is obedient to the message of the Lord,
unlike most of the people and its leaders who ignore God. Because this clan has been faithful and obedient,
therefore it will always be blessed by the Lord".
Lord, please help me be
faithful to you, like the Rechabites

Psalm 123: To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her
mistress,
so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.
We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn

with the proud man's disdain.

Acts
19.1-7: Paul left Corinth and went to the city of
Ephesus where he found a dozen men who had been baptized by John the
Baptist. He asked them "Did you receive the Holy
Spirit when you became believers?" They replied "We have not been taught
about the Holy Spirit". When Paul explained Jesus to them, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Paul then prayed with them using
the laying on of hands, and the Holy Spirit came down on
them. They began

18.31-34: Once again Jesus explained to the 12 apostles
what would happen to him:

I will be handed over to the

death. On the third day I will rise from the dead". But the apostles had no idea what his words meant

Jeremiah
32: Jerusalem was about to be captured by the
Chaldaeans.
But God promised that Jerusalem would recover its freedom.
As a sign that Jerusalem would be free again,
God told Jeremiah to buy a field. People thought Jeremiah was crazy.
But through this
action Jeremiah delivered God's message: This city and this land are now a waste,
but soon people will again buy land and build homes
in freedom and safety.
Lord, when things get really
bad, please increase our trust in you
that you will turn things around in our lives
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
122: I rejoiced when I heard them say
"Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.
For the peace of Jerusalem pray
"Peace be to your homes."
For love of the house of the Lord
I will ask for your good.
Lord, may your peace be in our
hearts and homes

Acts
18.5-11:
In Corinth, Paul was rejected by the Jews, so
he spent his time preaching to non-Jewish people. Many Corinthians became
believers and were baptized. One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:
"Do not be afraid to speak out, nor allow yourself to be
silenced. I
am with you". So Paul stayed in Corinth for 18 months preaching the word
of God
Jesus, give Christians more courage to
speak your message

Luke
18.18-23:
A young man from a prominent family asked
Jesus "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replied "You know the commandments:
you must not commit adultery, you must not kill, you must not steal, you
must honor your father and mother". The man answered "I have kept all these
commandments all my life". Jesus then said "There is still one
higher goal: sell all you own,
give the money to the poor, then come follow me", But when the man heard this he was very sad, because he was very
rich
Jesus, please help me follow you the way you
want me to follow you

Reflection: Mother Teresa, teaching in a well-off school in Calcutta, was called to a higher goal .... to work with the poor

MercyHK's two kittens at 191 Temple Street are out of their

way to go .....with disagreement being registered by sitting and letting the
other one drag the sitter!

Happy Diwali today! My 2013 Diwali reflection
A busy but happy day at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan yesterday: Mass and lunch for domestic workers who stay at MercyHK shelters; then a meeting for kind people who visit prisoners (from Voice for Prisoners, St Peter's NGO and others); then an evening meal with old friends from Notre Dame Parish in Kowloon City; then a gathering of Filipinas (several of whom, on their day off, visit prisoners).
Today I'm due to attend an overnight OMI gathering at Sheung Shui, after which Fr Jun and I hope to visit nearby Lo Wu women's prison.

Jeremiah
30-31: God told Jeremiah to tell the people these words:
"I will restore you to health.
I will heal your wounds.
I have loved you with an everlasting love.
Strong and constant is my love for you. I will bring back the exiles and save them.
I will change their sorrow into joy. The days are coming when I will make a new agreement with my people.
Deep within their hearts I will plant love of my Law. I will be their God and they will be my people.
I will forgive all their sins."
Lord, please plant love of you
deep within my heart
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
120, 121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my
distress:
"Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those
who hate peace.
I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains.
From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord
who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade.
Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming
both now and forever.
Lord, please protect us from
danger, day and night

Acts
18.1-4: Paul left Athens and went to the city of
Corinth. He met a Jewish couple who had recently left Italy when the
Emperor Claudius expelled all Jews from Rome. The couple were tentmakers, like Paul
himself.
Paul stayed with them and they worked together. Each Sabbath Paul preached in the prayer
halls,
trying to convert Jews as well as non-Jewish people
Jesus, thank you for the example of Paul who
worked to support himself and didn't live off others
Listen

Luke
18.15-17: People brought little children to Jesus, for
him to bless them. The disciples told the people to go away and not bother
Jesus. But Jesus called the children to him and said
"Let the children come to me, and do not stop
them, for it is to such
as these that the kingdom of God belongs. I tell you, anyone who does not welcome the
kingdom of God like a little child, will never enter it"
Jesus, please give all children the chance to
know and love you
Listen

Reflection: On the mountain of Transfiguration, Peter (a fisherman) offered to make a tent for Jesus, Moses and Elijah. Jesus apparently declined the offer. But Paul was a professional tent maker. Maybe if he'd been on the mountain Jesus might have accepted the offer of a tent?!
