Ezekiel 4-11: Ezekiel used many images to describe the fall of Jerusalem. But the people and their leaders would not believe him. God used Ezekiel to say to the exiles: "I will bring you back to your homeland of Israel. I will give you a new heart and a new spirit. Then you will keep my commandments. Then you will know that I am the Lord."
Grant to us, O Lord, a heart renewed

My recording of this reading

Psalm 135: Praise the name of the Lord, praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he wills in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths but they cannot speak. They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols. Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord
Dear Lord, please help people who worship idols to know and love you

Listen

Acts 21.15-40: In Jerusalem Paul gave a report to James and other Christian leaders of all that God had done for non-Jews through his ministry. But Paul was soon seen by Jews from where he had traveled. He was dragged out of the Temple and beaten by a wild crowd. The beating was stopped by a Roman captain who had Paul bound with chains. The crowd was calling out for Paul to be killed. Paul asked for permission to speak to the crowd and the captain agreed. Paul then spoke to the crowd in Hebrew
Jesus, please protect Christians who live in dangerous places

Listen

Luke 22.31-34: Jesus said to the apostle Peter "Satan has got his wish to attack you. But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. Once you have recovered from Satan's attack, you in your turn must give strength to others". Peter said "Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you and to die with you". Jesus replied "Peter, before the rooster crows, you will  deny three times that you know me"
Jesus, please strengthen my faith. Please strengthen my faith

Ezekiel 1-3: About 5 years after the first group of Jews were exiled to Babylon, Ezekiel received a vision while he was with the exiles in Babylon. Ezekiel saw the glory of the Lord and he heard a voice saying: "I am choosing you to speak my message to the people. Whether the people listen to you or not, you must keep on proclaiming my message. You are to be a sentry to the House of Israel, a lookout who warns them of danger coming."
Lord, please help people listen to your message and obey it

My recording of this reading

Psalm 134: O come, bless the Lord, all you who serve the Lord, who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. Lift up your hands to heaven and bless the Lord through the night. May the Lord bless you from Zion,
he who made both heaven and earth.

Lord, please protect my family tonight and every night

Listen

Acts 21.1-14: Our sea voyage took us to the city of Caesarea. A prophet there took Paul's belt and used it to tie up his own feet and hands, as a sign of what would happen to Paul in Jerusalem. Everyone implored Paul not to go to Jerusalem. Paul replied "I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus". And so we packed up and headed for Jerusalem
Jesus, please give me a bit of Paul's courage

Listen

Luke 22.12-20: On the evening of the Passover feast, Jesus and his apostles ate the Passover Lamb in a large upper room furnished with couches. While they were having the meal, Jesus took some bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it and gave it to his apostles saying: "This is my body. Do this in memory of me". Then he took a cup of wine and said "This cup is the new covenant in my blood which will be poured out for you"
Jesus, please help me understand how your Body and Blood are present in a Communion service

c.f. readings for Sunday 32

2 Maccabees 7: There were seven brothers who were arrested with their mother. The king tried to force them to taste pig's flesh, which the Law forbids, by torturing them with whips and scourges. One of them, acting as spokesman for the others, said, "What are you trying to find out from us? We are prepared to die rather than break the laws of our ancestors."  With his last breath the second brother exclaimed, "Inhuman fiend, you may discharge us from this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up, since it is for his laws that we die, to live again for ever."  After him, they amused themselves with the third, who on being asked for his tongue promptly thrust it out and boldly held out his hands, with these honourable words, "It was heaven that gave me these limbs; for the sake of his laws I disdain them; from him I hope to receive them again." The king and his attendants were astounded at the young man's courage and his utter indifference to suffering. When this one was dead they subjected the fourth to the same savage torture. When he neared his end he cried, "Ours is the better choice, to meet death at men's hands, yet relying on God's promise that we shall be raised up by him; whereas for you there can be no resurrection, no new life."

Psalms 17-18: Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.
Lord, you are worthy of all praise

 Listen

2 Thessalonians 2.1-17: Regarding the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, don't be deceived by wild speculation. Stand firm in your faith and avoid speculation. Keep the traditions we taught you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. May God strengthen you in everything good you do or say
Jesus, stop people spreading false information

 Listen

Luke 20.27-38: Some Sadducees - those who say that there is no resurrection - approached Jesus and they put this question to him, "Master, we have it from Moses in writing, that if a man's married brother dies childless, the man must marry the widow to raise up children for his brother. Well then, there were seven brothers. The first, having married a wife, died childless. The second and then the third married the widow. And the same with all seven, they died leaving no children. Finally the woman herself died. Now, at the resurrection, to which of them will she be wife since she had been married to all seven?"
Jesus replied, "The children of this world take wives and husbands, but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the dead do not marry because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of the resurrection they are sons of God. And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all men are in fact alive."

Reflection on the above readings: Christian faith in the life to come doesn't cause us to retire/retreat from this world, but to try as much as we can to help others know about the life to come

Baruch 6: Because of your sins, you will be exiles in Babylon for 7 generations. In Babylon when you see all sorts of idols being worshipped by the local people, say in your hearts: "Master, it is you  we must worship."
Lord, when we are in places where people are worshipping idols, please help us remember to pray in our hearts: "Master, it is you we worship"

My recording of this reading

Psalm 133: How good and how pleasant it is when people live in unity. It is like precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard. It is like the dew of Hermon which falls on the heights of Zion. For there the Lord gives his blessing, life for ever.
Dear Lord, please help all the peoples of the world to live as one family, in unity.

Listen

Acts 20.28-38: Paul continued "You elders are the leaders of the Church of God. Be on your guard against bad leaders trying to mislead people. Remember my example. I never asked anyone for money or clothes. You know how my work as a tentmaker earned enough to support my companions and me. Remember Jesus' words There is more happiness in giving than in receiving". When he finished speaking, he knelt down with them and prayed. Then they took him to the ship
Jesus, please help Gospel workers imitate Paul

Listen

Luke 22.1-6: Big crowds were in Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover which was only a few days away. The religious  leaders were afraid that the crowds would prevent them from killing Jesus. But then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot who was one of the 12 apostles. Judas went to the leaders to plan how to capture Jesus.  The leaders agreed to give Judas some money for his help. Judas then began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus at a time when there were no crowds around
Jesus, please protect me from Satan's influence, and from any sort of pride that might make me want to abandon your friendship

Fri Nov 4

Thanks to the untiring efforts (and prayers!) of MercyHK social workers, two more long-time drug addicts yesterday entered a drug treatment centre for long-term treatment. That makes 20 such cases this year ... a remarkable result given the difficulty of getting drug addicts to agree to go to a treatment centre. God bless the 20!

Yesterday morning I spent a couple of hours, mainly at Wanchai District Court, helping an elderly Nepal lady process bail release for her husband who has been in detention for the past 7 months. The husband was released from prison late yesterday afternoon.

In the afternoon, at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan, I joined social workers Lucia and Jane for a meeting with members of the NGO Equal Justice ... with a view to helping recently arrested people (local people and overseas people) to receive good legal advice as soon as possible

Baruch 3-4: Listen, Israel, to commands that bring life and peace. Remember all that God has taught us. As by your will you strayed away from God, so now turn back and search for him ten times as hard.
Lord, please help us not to forget you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 130: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. If you, O Lord, should record our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness. For this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for the daybreak. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity
Lord, please forgive me for all the bad things I have done

Listen

Acts 20.22-24: Paul continued "Now you see me a prisoner already in spirit. I am on my way to Jerusalem, and have no idea what will happen to me there. The Holy Spirit has made it clear that imprisonment and persecution await me there. But life to me is not a thing to waste words on. What matters is that when I finish my race, I have carried out the mission the Lord Jesus gave me - to bear witness to the Good News of God's grace"
Jesus, please help me live a worthwhile life

Listen

Luke 21.3-38: Jesus said to his disciples that Jerusalem would be destroyed and its people scattered throughout the world. He also spoke of how his followers would be persecuted,  and of the end of the world: "The planets will be shaken, nations will be in agony,  bewildered by the force of the oceans. Then they will see me coming in a cloud with great power and glory. To prepare for your own end of earthly life, stay faithful to prayer and goodness. Don't let your heart be coarsened by debauchery, drunkenness and material cares". In this his final week on earth, Jesus spent the daytime in the Temple, teaching. From early morning the people would gather round him to listen to him. Then he would spend the night on the Mount of Olives
Jesus, help me be faithful to prayer and goodness

Yesterday morning at the Dr Jesus Centre I joined a staff meeting of the MercyHK team: Eddie and Michael (Directors) with social work assistants (in ABC order) Agnes, Jane Lucia, Patrick, Raymond and Simon. God bless everyone!

In the afternoon and evening, since activities were cancelled because of typhoon Signal No. 8, I spent much time at the desk catching up on a backlog of jobs

Pope Francis says we should celebrate our day of Baptism, just like our birthday. Well, 76 years ago today, on Nov 3, 1946, at St Mary's Church, South Brisbane, I was baptised by a Fr Richard Holmes Thompson who I look forward to meeting in Heaven!

Baruch 1-2: The message of Baruch, written in Babylon for the exiles living there, and sent to Jerusalem for the people still there: Let us pray that our genuine service for the king of Babylon will win his favor and protection. To us belongs a look of shame, because we have not listened to the message of the Lord our God. Lord, please listen to our prayer. Rescue us from exile and humiliation.
Dear God, please help all exiles return to their homeland

My recording of this reading

Psalm 128: O blessed are those who love the Lord and walk in his ways. By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper: your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life. May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem! On Israel, peace!
Dear Lord, may all married people live to see their children's children

Acts 20.17-21: Paul's journey took him to Meletus where he met the elders of the church from Ephesus. He said to them "You know what my way of life has been from the first day I arrived among you. I have served the Lord in all humility, facing all the sorrows and trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you. I have preached to you and instructed you, both in public and in your homes, urging everyone to believe in our Lord Jesus"
Jesus, please help me be a bit more like Saint Paul

Luke 20.45-47: After some  leaders had asked him some trick questions, Jesus said to his disciples "Beware of the religious leaders who like to walk about in special clothes and love to be greeted obsequiously in the market places. They like the front seats in prayer halls and the places of honor at banquets. They like making a show of lengthy prayers. But at the same time they steal the property of widows. They will receive a severe sentence from God at the end of their lives

Wed Nov 2ALL SOULS DAY

On this All Souls Day we especially remember those who died in recent tragedies: typhoon in Philippines, Halloween gathering in South Korea, bombing in Somalia, bridge collapse in India. And our hearts go out to the families of those who died ... and to people injured. At the same time we hope that authorities help people build stronger houses to withstand typhoons and assist people to get to safety during typhoons; that crowd control is taken seriously; that terrorists can be brought to the negotiating table; that ordinary people avoid dangerous behaviour on bridges.

c.f. Readings for All Souls Day

Isaiah 25:

On Mount Zion in Jerusalem, the Lord will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines.
On this mountain he will delete Death. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek. Lord, you are my God, I extol you, I praise your name. You, Lord, are a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in distress.
Lord, please give hope and courage to people who are sad and troubled in the world today

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, please increase my remembering, my longing and my hope

Recording

Philippians 3.20-41: Our homeland is in heaven. We wait for the Savior from heaven who will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. He will do this by the same power he has as C.E.O. of the universe. So, do not stop running but remain faithful in the Lord.
Jesus, please increase my longing for heaven

Recording

Mark 16.1-8: Jesus died on Friday afternoon. Early on Sunday morning, Mary of Magdala and two other women went to Jesus' tomb to anoint his body with spices. They had been wondering how they would roll away the large stone, but when they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away. When they went into the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe and they were full of awe. But he said to them  "Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He has risen from the dead. Go and tell his disciples he will see them in Galilee"
Jesus, when life seems hopeless, like a dead body in a tomb, please help us remember how you rose from the dead .... and you can help us "rise" from any "hopeless" situation

Recording

Reflection on the above Bible readings:
One thing that nearly all cultures share: an instinct to remember the dead, to pray for the dead, to honor the dead.
