Tues Jan 3

Hello again from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania where around midday yesterday, day 22 of my trip, I met two more Tanzanians who used to be in prison in HK. Video interviews I made with them are here. Late afternoon I went to nearby St Joseph's Cathedral to say thank you for this time in Tanzania and to ask a special blessing on the people who made my trip possible. Last night I was kindly invited to take part in a program at Clouds Media. Today I'm due to go to Nairobi in Kenya

This HK TVB program mentions the work of MerchHK

1 John 3.1-3: Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us by letting us be called God's children, And God's love has even more in store for us in the future: we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is, This is why we must try to live good lives. We must try to be as good as Christ

My recording of this reading

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.

Mon Jan 2

Hello again from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania where from midday yesterday, day 21 of my trip, I met several more Tanzanians who used to be in prison in HK. In the early morning I attended Mass at nearby St Joseph's Cathedral for the first day of the year .... asking a special blessing on the people who made my trip possible. Unfortunately I found the liturgy at the Cathedral very distracting to say the least (e.g. after the greeting at the beginning of Mass everyone had to sit down for about 5 minutes while a veritable litany of intentions for the Mass were read out  .... so many stipends for one Mass? .... on a day when priests are required to say Mass gratis "pro pop" for the people?). In fact I walked out before the final blessing during a long spiel about money ... after I heard the words "you should observe the Church's commandment about tithing" .... but there is no such commandment  ... not in the Catholic Church!

Two new videos I made yesterday in Dar Es Salaam - here - with 2 men who are grateful for having been arrested at HK airport in transit to China. The Nigerians who recruited them did not tell them about China having the death penalty. The two men did not know they were going to a place with the death penalty.

Hello again from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania where representatives of 10 families attended a beautiful gathering yesterday (day 19 of my trip). The group included five people who used to be in prison in HK. Four of the five are unemployed  ...but cannot find work in an economy devastated by Covid. So ....after much discussion ....and with advice from a local social worker ... a plan was begun to start a second hand shop in Dar Es Salaam ... to be called "MercyTZ"!  For this venture and for the people who made my trip possible I said a very  special prayer when I visited nearby St Joseph's Cathedral after the gathering.

I wish all dear readers the peace of Christmas right through 2023!

Hello from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania where I arrived early yesterday afternoon after a flight from Johannesburg in South Africa ...for which I got up at 4am .... and said Mass at 4.30am  ...praying especially for South Africa and for the people who made this trip possible. On arrival in Dar (Day 18 of my trip) I "hit the ground running" with a most important meeting....and had no trouble sleeping last night!

c.f. readings for Feast of Holy Family

Sirach 1-3: All wisdom comes from God. Love for God is the source of wisdom. If you desire wisdom, keep the Lord's commandments, in private as well as in public. Keep the commandment to honor your parents. Respect for your father will atone for your sins. Honor for your mother will gain you blessings. Support your father in his old age. Even if his mind should fail, show him kindness. Do not despise him in your health and strength. Be gentle in the way you live your life. The greater you are, the more humbly you should behave.
Dear God, please help me always respect and honor my parents

My recording of this reading

Psalm 128: O blessed are those who love the Lord and walk in his ways. By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper: your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life. May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem! On Israel, peace!
Dear Lord, may all married people live to see their children's children

 Listen

Colossians 3-4: Wives and husbands, understand and support each other. Children, be obedient to your parents. Parents, treat your children fairly or else they will rebel. Slaves, be obedient and respectful to your owners. Offer up your work to the Lord, our Heavenly Owner. Owners, be just and fair to your slaves. Remember your Heavenly Owner.
Jesus,  help families to live together in harmony

 Listen

Luke 2.39-52: Joseph and Mary moved back to their own town of Nazareth. The child Jesus was filled with wisdom as he grew older Each year  Joseph and Mary would take Jesus to Jerusalem for the celebration of the  Passover. When Jesus was 12 years old, they went to Jerusalem as usual. But when their traveling group left Jerusalem, Jesus stayed behind without his parents knowing it.  They presumed he was somewhere with the group. When they couldn't find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After 2 days, they found him, in the Temple, listening to the religion teachers and asking them questions. People who heard him were astounded at his intelligence. His mother said to him "My child, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been really worried about you". Jesus replied "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that I must be concerned with my Father's work?"  But they didn't understand what he meant. He went with them to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother stored all these things in her heart
Jesus, please help all "lost children" to be found!

When Jesus was 40 days old, his parents took him to the Temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as the Law required. In Jerusalem there was an old man named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died,  he would see the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit, he came to the Temple, took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying "Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen the Savior. He is a light to enlighten the pagans, and he is the glory of your people Israel"

Merry Christmas! I wish all dear readers the peace of Christmas right through 2023!

Wed Dec 28

Yesterday was Day 16 of my anti-drug campaign trip. In the morning I visited a man in Modderbee Prison here in Johannesburg ... a man who spent 10 years in prison in HK and was arrested on arrival back in South Africa for a charge dating back to before the time he went to HK. Staff at the prison were extra helpful and kind to me. Then late in the afternoon as I returned to my hotel after a trip to a  local mall, I saw a man in Correctional Services uniform at the hotel's front entrance. I explained what I was doing and how I had visited a prison in the morning and he said "please also visit my prison" ... he being its Deputy Director. So, this morning another prison visit please God. Once again I give thanks for all the good things happening on this trip ....and I ask a blessing on all the people who made the trip possible!

Over the Christmas period MercyHK has organised many activities in HK. I have been keenly checking the many photos posted on W/App and I ask a blessing on all who arranged and all who took part in these activities

1 John 1.5-9: God is light. There is no darkness in him. If we say we are in union with God while we are living in darkness, we are lying, because we are not living the truth. If we say we have no sin in us, we are deceiving ourselves and refusing to admit the truth. But if we acknowledge our sins, God will forgive us and purify us from everything that is wrong
Jesus, forgive my sins. Please help me avoid sin

Psalm 124: "If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song. If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us. Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth. Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have rescued me from trouble

For today's Feast of the Holy Innocents:
Matthew 2.13-23:
After the wise men left Bethlehem, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said "Go quickly to Egypt, because Herod wants to kill the child". That same night, Joseph got up and set out for Egypt with Mary and Jesus. Herod was angry after being tricked by the wise men. He got his soldiers to kill all baby boys two years old or younger in Bethlehem. After Herod died some months later, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to return to Israel. Joseph, Mary and Jesus moved to the town of Nazareth, thus fulfilling the prophecy about the Saviour: "He will be called a Nazarene".
Jesus, you were once a refugee. Please bless all refugees in the world today

c.f. readings for St John the Apostle

John 13.34-35: Jesus said to his disciples at the meal "I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples". Jesus, please help all Christians to love one another as you have loved us
Recording of this reading

John 20.1-10: Before dawn the next morning, Sunday, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb.  She saw the stone had been moved from the tomb's entrance. She ran to Peter and John and said "Someone has taken the Lord out of the tomb". They ran back to the tomb. Peter went in first. He saw that the linen cloths were on the ground. But the cloth that had been around Jesus' head was not on the ground. It was neatly folded and in a place by itself. Then John went into the tomb. He saw, and he believed

1 John 1.1-2: Something which has existed since the beginning - that we heard, that we saw with our own eyes, that we touched with our hands: the Word, who is life - this is our subject. That life was made visible. We saw it, and we are giving our testimony, telling you of the eternal life which was with the Father and has been made visible to us.

Revelation 1.9-17: I, John, share your sufferings. I was on the island of Patmos, imprisoned for having preached about Jesus. One Sunday the Spirit possessed me. I heard a voice shouting "Write down all you see, and send it to the seven churches of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea". I turned to see who had spoken to me, and I saw Jesus, full of glory. His face was like the sun shining with all its force. He said to me "Do not be afraid. It is I, the First and the Last. I am the Living One"
