Tues Jan 10
Hello from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia where I arrived two nights ago from Nairobi
in Kenya. Yesterday was day 31
(updated count) of my trip and was spent on a special job involving a lot
of travelling around Addis ....where there are long queues of cars at gas
stations trying to get gas because stations closed recently until prices went
up. Weather is fine and warm here in the day time but very cool ...make that
cold ...at night!
I am so grateful that a number of HK friends have already supported The Clean Start Mercy Project to set up study centres in various African countries for school-less children ... using on-line courses ....to be managed by people who used to be in prison in HK. ....thereby doing something to help two very needy groups of people: school-less children and jobless former prisoners! God bless the people who have made donations to help start this project ... and God bless the people who made my trip possible

Genesis
18: One day at
Mamre, God
and two angels appeared to Abraham.
At first, God and the angels looked like men.
Following the ancient custom of hospitality
Abraham prepared a feast for them.
God told Abraham that the town of Sodom was going to be destroyed because of the evil done there.
Abraham pleaded with God not to destroy Sodom.
God agreed to postpone Sodom's destruction for a while.
Dear God, please
help people avoid sodomy
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man.
Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the
Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer
connected.
My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me.
They make holes in my hands and my feet.
They await my death. They divide my clothing among them,
they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that you are good and
holy.
I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb
and entrusted me to my mother's breast.
To you I was committed from my birth,
from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now.
I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator.
May all the nations know and worship you.
Lord, please help people who
are in big trouble right now,
especially people whose lives are in danger
Listen

Romans
10-11: If your lips confess that Jesus is Lord, and
if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you
will be saved. How wonderful is God! How great his
wisdom and knowledge.
What finite creature could ever understand the mind of our infinite
Creator? All that exists comes from him. To him be
glory for ever!
Jesus, Father, Spirit - three persons, one God
- to you be glory for ever!
Listen
John
6.26-29: Jesus said to the people "You have come
looking for me because you had so much bread to eat. Do not give so much concern to physical
food.
Be more concerned about the spiritual food that lasts forever.
This is the food I am offering you"
Jesus, please give us the food that lasts
forever

The
Epiphany

Hello again from Nairobi in Kenya. Yesterday, day
27 of my trip, I stayed home the whole day at my hotel to receive many
visitors ...an O.M.I. youth group with Fr Gerry Conlan O.M.I. .... a lady
released from detention in HK only a few weeks ago .... another lady released a
few years ago .... the family of a man in prison in HK .... and a group of women
who are forming a new NGO to help victims of human trafficking (after some of
their members were tricked by a bogus agency to go to HK as domestic helpers ...
and were treated badly ... and came back to Kenya after winning court cases in
HK). My day finished with a 10 min swim in the hotel pool just before it closed
at 6pm.
The O.M.I. youth group is most interested in The Clean Start Mercy Project to set up study centres in various African countries for school-less children ... using on-line courses ....to be managed by people who used to be in prison in HK. ....thereby doing something to help two very needy groups of people: school-less children and jobless former prisoners! c.f. readings for Feast of the Epiphany
Isaiah 59-60: Arise,
shine out, for your light has come. The glory of the Lord is rising on you,
though the rest of the world is still in darkness. The nations come to your
light and kings to your dawning brightness. People
from other lands are coming to you, bringing gold and incense and singing the
praise of the Lord. No more will the sun give you daylight, nor moonlight
shine on you, for the Lord himself will be your everlasting light. Then your
days of mourning will be ended.
Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Please give more light to my
life.
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
72: O Lord, please
bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May
the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The
kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He
will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He
will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be
blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Ephesians
3.2-6: You have probably heard how I
have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a
revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery. This mystery that
has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was
unknown to any men in past generations; it means that pagans
now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and
that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the gospel

Matthew
2.1-12: Jesus was
born in the town of Bethlehem, during the reign of King Herod. Some months after
Jesus' birth, several wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. They said
"Where is the infant king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose and
we have come to offer him honor." King Herod felt threatened by this news.
He knew from the Scriptures that the promised Saviour would be born in
Bethlehem. So Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem, pretending that he too would
like to offer honor to the child. The wise men headed for Bethlehem, guided by
the star. The star filled them with joy. The star stopped over the place where
the child was. The wise men fell to their knees and honored the child. They
offered him gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. Then they returned to their
own country by a different way, having been warned in a dream not to go back to
Herod.
Jesus, help me to honor you like the wise men

Hello again from Nairobi in Kenya. Yesterday, day
26 of my trip, was spent largely at Langata Women's Prison, at a Mass
arranged by NGO Clean
Start which is run by former prisoners and helps women released from prison
to find a job. I was privileged to concelebrate Mass with local chaplains Fr
Peter and Fr Innocent ...for more than a 100 women in remand. Joining us where
several people who used to be in detention in HK and Macau ....their powerful
and encouraging testimonies gave wonderful encouragement to the 100 women.
After Mass there was a meal at a very special restaurant at Kenya National Museum ...at which the NGO team, Fr Peter, Fr Innocent, former prisoners and other friends discussed this proposal ...raising the possibility of churches and schools becoming involved to help provide places for the study centres:
The Clean Start Mercy Project to set up study centres in various African countries for school-less children ... using on-line courses ....to be managed by people who used to be in prison in HK. ....thereby doing something to help two very needy groups of people: school-less children and jobless former prisoners! Thu Jan 5
Hello again from Nairobi in Kenya. Yesterday, day
24 of my trip, was spent at the centre of the NGO Clean
Start which is run by former prisoners and helps women released from prison
to find a job. About a dozen women who spent long years in prison (most of them
in HK, one in Macau, one in Seychelles) attended the meeting and gave most
moving testimonies. Most of them are now unable to find work ...rejected by
society and sometimes even by their own family ....and unable to pay school
fees.
So, the idea has evolved for a project whereby HK people co-operate with Clean Start to help people released from prison in HK to find jobs when they return to their own country. At first I thought of a second hand shop .... but the more I walk the streets of large cities in Africa and see people on the footpath hawking all sorts of second hand items, the more I realise a second hand shop in this part of the world is not so practical.
A better idea comes from the situation of another group which needs urgent help: young children who have no school ...especially in poor village areas .... where tens of thousands of primary age children have no school ....especially because of the effect of Covid on an already poor economy.
So ... the idea is for study
centres to be set up for such children, managed
by people who used to be in prison in HK and supervised by Clean Start!
The study centres will use online programs to help children learn basic
subjects. This will also create jobs for the former prisoners!
Cost to run such a centre is about US$2,000 per month ( including about
US$700 salary for each of two staff plus meals for the children).
It is hoped that several centres can be set up as soon as possible to coincide with the start of the school year this month in most of East Africa.
It is also hoped that the centres will soon be supported locally as people hear about "the little study centre where former prisoners are helping school-less children" .... and people start donating clothes/food etc for the children ...and please God the centres will even become distribution centres where donated items can be given to needy families ... as happens at the MercyHK centre in HK.
If you would like to help this very special
project get started please make a note of my Hang Seng Bank account (which I can
access here in Africa):
Number: 761-8-000-496
Name: Wotherspoon John D.
This is not a MercyHK project since funds raised for MercyHK must, by government
regulation, be used only in HK. But this is a Mercy project and the little study
centres will each have a Mercy name (e.g. MercyTZ for Tanzania).
Also, I cannot issue any receipts in the name of
MercyHK for donations to this project. But I will send a personal thank you
message to all donors. Please make sure to let me know your name and W/App
number or email if you forward me a deposit slip.
W/App +852 67095674 email: jdwomi@gmail.com
I will post on line an anonymous list of all donations. And I will forward donations collectively to Clean Start and receipts from Clean Start wll also be put on line. Total amount in receipts from Clean Start will equal total amount of donations! Clean Start will be responsible for allocating money for the setting up of each centre and for the accounting of money used by each centre.
Please do not send donations to MercyHK or St Peter's accounts for this project. Please send directly to my account
JESUS, PLEASE BLESS ALL THE PEOPLE WHO MADE MY TRIP POSSIBLE, AND PLEASE BLESS ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HELP THE "CLEAN START MERCY PROJECT"!

This has taught us love:
that Jesus gave up his life for us.
We too should give up our lives for others. If you see someone in need

He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the

Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp,
with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples
