Tues Jan 17

Hello from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Yesterday, Jan 16 was day 36 of my trip. I spent a large part of the day at the desk catching up on many jobs. Also did a bit of shopping ... and spent some time at a nearby local church. Around 6pm I went for my very first swim ever in the Atlantic Ocean .... at Copacabana Beach. Managed to catch a few small waves. Not as many people at the beach as two days ago on Sunday. On Sunday afternoon there were maybe 200,000 (!) at the beach. Yesterday only about 100,000!

44 Videos I have made with people who used to be in prison in HK - here

I am so grateful that a number of HK friends have already supported  The Clean Start Mercy Project to set up study centres in various African countries for school-less children ... using on-line courses ....to be managed by people who used to be in prison in HK. ....thereby doing something to help two very needy groups of people: school-less children and jobless former prisoners! God bless the people who have made donations to help start this project (updated list) and those who have helped pay for school fees for children of very special people... and God bless the people who made my trip possible

Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 25: After Abraham died, God blessed Abraham's son Isaac. For a long time Isaac's wife Rebecca could not have children. Then after Isaac prayed for her, she had twin boys - Esau and Jacob. Esau became a hunter. Jacob helped at home. Isaac favored Esau. Rebecca preferred Jacob. There was a strong rivalry between the two boys. Once when Esau came home seriously ill, he agreed to give Jacob his rights as first born son in exchange for some soup Jacob had made.
Dear God, please help childless couples to have a baby

My recording of this reading

Psalms 29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing. So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

Romans 13.8-9: Avoid getting into debt, except the debt of love we owe each other. Love other people as you should, and you will keep all the commandments. All the commandments concerning other people - You shall not commit adultery, you shall not kill, you shall not steal etc - are summed up in the words "You must care about your neighbor as much as you care about yourself"
Jesus, help me care about others as much as I care about myself

Listen

John 7.1-13: Jesus now stayed in Galilee. He could not stay in Judea because the religious leaders wanted to kill him. Not even his brothers believed in him. In Jerusalem, no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the religious leaders
Jesus, people were scared to talk about you, your brothers didn't believe in you, and the leaders wanted to kill you. How small my  problems are compared with yours

Listen

Reflection: Despite his problems, Jesus did not give up. He kept going. And he gives us the courage to keep going

My remaining hair has become a bit woolly of late .... I should have had a haircut several weeks ago, but I waited until I left Addis Ababa (where night time can be 7 degrees). So I finally had a hair cut yesterday .... from a 90 year old man who is a thorough old-school gentleman. One of the best hair cuts I've had in recent years .... and not the usual rushed job but with time for much humorous conversation. When he asked me how old I was and I told him 76 he said I was just a boy!

Mon Jan 16

Hello from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Yesterday, Jan 15 was day 35 of my trip. I spent the morning at the desk and in the afternoon travelled to Rio from Sao Paulo (where on the night of Jan 14 it took me more than an hour to obtain a sim card ....very complicated in Brazil for foreigners). My hotel is 5 mins walk from Copacabana Beach .....where Pope Francis said Mass during World Youth Day in 2013. Last night around 6pm I went to the beach for a walk and saw the biggest crowd I have ever seen at any beach anywhere in the world ....maybe 200,000!

Genesis 23-24: Not long after his wife Sarah died Abraham told his number one servant to go back to Haran and find a wife for his son Isaac. The servant went to Haran, to the town of Nahor. When women were getting water from the well in Nahor the servant prayed to God for help to find a wife for Isaac. He said to God, "If I ask a woman for a drink and she answers 'Please take some of my water, and I'll give some to your camels, too' may she be the one you have chosen for Isaac."
He had barely finished his prayer when Rebecca, daughter of Bethuel came to the well. She was very beautiful and not married. The servant asked her for water and she said "Drink, sir...and I'll get water for your camels, too." Bethuel, a relative of Abraham, gladly agreed for Rebecca to go with the servant to be Isaac's wife. Rebecca herself was happy with the plan. Isaac married Rebecca and loved her dearly.

Psalm 28: To you, O Lord, I call, my rock, hear me. If you do not heed, I shall become like people in the grave. Lord, you are my strength and my shield. In you my heart trusts. Lord, please help people who are in big danger today

John 6.59-69: After hearing what Jesus said about his flesh and blood, many of his disciples said "How can anyone believe in such crazy ideas?"  Many disciples then stopped following Jesus. Jesus said to the 12 apostles "What about you? Are you also going to
leave me?" Peter replied "Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life. We believe you are the Holy One of God"

Jesus, please don't ever let me stop following you

Sat-Sun Jan 14-15Feast of the Baptism of Jesus

Hello again from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia where Jan 13 was day 33 of my trip. A meeting I had yesterday with the most encouraging staff of the Nigerian Embassy by itself made my visit to Addis most worthwhile. Today I'm due to travel to another place and might not be able to update this blog so easily .... so ...this update is for 2 days. Thank you for a prayer!

Update Sat night Jan 14: I arrived in Brazil late this afternoon. Three movies ...all true stories ....on the plane: Chariots of Fire (again ...it inspires me!), Secretariat (the best horse ever in the US), Million Dollar Arm (Indian cricketers to US for baseball). Unfortunately no wifi on plane (..."out of order") so I was unable to zoom-join the Sat prayer meeting for healing at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan

c.f. readings for Baptism of Jesus

Isaiah 41-42:
The Lord says to his people Israel: "I have chosen you. I have not rejected you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Stop being anxious and worried. I am your God. I give you strength and help. Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison".
Lord, please help me understand how "my servant" is Jesus

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

Acts 10.34-38: Peter addressed Cornelius and his household: "The truth I have now come to realise" he said "is that God does not have favourites, but that anybody of any nationality who fears God and does what is right is acceptable to him. It is true, God sent his word to the people of Israel, and it was to them that the good news of peace was brought by Jesus Christ - but Jesus Christ is Lord of all people. You must have heard about the recent happenings in Judaea; about Jesus of Nazareth and how he began in Galilee, after John had been preaching baptism. God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil."

Luke 3.15-22: John the Baptist said to the people "I baptize you with water, but someone more powerful than I will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. I am not fit to undo the strap of the powerful one's sandals". Jesus then came and was baptized by John. While Jesus was praying after his baptism, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the shape of a dove. And a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on you".
Jesus, Beloved Son, please baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

 Listen

Reflection: This is the only time in the Bible where the Three Persons are said to have been "physically" present: The Father's voice was heard, the Son was baptised, the Spirit came down as a dove. My reflection led to the composition of this little song
Also, on this day in previous years, Pope Francis has reminded us to remember and celebrate our day of baptism, just as we remember and celebrate our day of birth (... my baptism: November 3)

Fri Jan 13

Hello again from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia where yesterday was day 32 of my trip. I spent most of the day on a long trip to Kaliti prison (50% of travel time spent in traffic jams...) where there are 13 women and 2 men from Brazil in prison for bringing drugs here from Sao Paulo. Prison conditions are ghastly ...... by comparison HK prisons are 5-Star Hotels.

42 Videos I have made with people who used to be in prison in HK are here

When I was in Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania) and Nairobi (Kenya) I met a number of people who used to be in prison in HK and who have no jobs ... and who can't afford school fees ....so their children may not be able to have school this year. Amount needed for fees for 8 such children is around HK$40,000. If anyone would like to help these children pls check my Hang Seng account: Name: Wotherspoon John David; Number: 761-8-000-496. Money will be sent directly to school account. Many thanks to dear friends who have already sent something for this appeal ... acknowledged in Clear Start Project donations file, below

Regular readers of this blog know that I mention money only a few times a year .... usually to get help for people in special need. But here in Africa the needs are so great, make that enormous, that I find myself posting several appeals on a daily basis. I can't help thinking how different things are in places like HK and Australia. In HK there's almost a competition between NGOs and other groups to help the needy. Sometimes needy people in HK will go from one function to another and even a third on the same day to receive free meals and other items from kind organizations. But not here in Africa .... there "ain't" no competition here .... just huge numbers of hungry, homeless, jobless, schoolless brothers and sisters of ours of whom Jesus says "neglecting to help them is neglecting to help Me"

Geneis 22: Abraham loved God very dearly. Once when God put him to the test Abraham was even willing to sacrifice his only son Isaac if that was what God wanted. When God saw Abraham's love and obedience God renewed his promise to make Abraham and Isaac's descendants as many as the stars of heaven
Dear God, please help us love and obey you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my help. I will always praise you.

Romans 12.14-21: Pray for people who are unkind to you. Be kind to them. Rejoice with those who are happy. Console people who are sad. Treat everyone with kindness. Never be condescending. Make real friends with the poor.  Do all you can to live at peace with everyone. Resist evil and conquer it with good.
Jesus, I pray for (.. name ...) who was unkind to me

Listen

John 6. 52-58: The people said among themselves  "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus replied "If you refuse to eat my flesh, and drink my blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life. For my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I live in them. As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever".
Jesus, thank you for the gift of your Body and Blood in Holy Communion

Hello again from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia where yesterday was day 31 of my trip. I spent the morning at the desk and in the afternoon had a most interesting meeting with a journalist from South America .... who also is concerned about people being recruited as drug mules - at the moment there are 13 women and 2 men from Brazil in prison in Addis for bringing drugs here from Sao Paulo

While recently in Nairobi I twice went by car through Kibera  ... the largest urban slum in Africa. Wikipedia needs updating:  Kibera has not been cleared away. Still around half a million people living in terrible conditions. Most homes have no sewage or running water. My taxi driver to Nairobi airport last Sunday ...in an old car he hires on a daily basis ...has lived in Kibera since he was married more than 20 years ago. He has five daughters, the youngest being handicapped (who he hopes to get into a special school). I gave him something extra to help with school fees for daughter number 5, named Teresa.

Three more videos I made recently with people who used to be in prison in HK - here (Jan 5)

Genesis 20-21:  Abraham and his wife Sarah were old people but God blessed them with a son. They named their son Isaac. Sarah again made life difficult for Hagar and Hagar's son. Hagar and her son had to leave Abraham's home but God protected them and found them a new home.

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.

Genesis 19: The men of Sodom practised sodomy. They wanted to abuse the two angels who looked like men when the angels visited the home of Abraham's nephew, Lot. So the angels struck the threatening men with blindness. Then the angels told Lot and his family to leave Sodom immediately because it would soon be destroyed. As soon as Lot and his family had left Sodom the town was destroyed by a volcanic storm
Dear God, please help people avoid sodomy

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name.  If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.
Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

Romans 12.1-2: I beg you, trust in God's mercy, and worship him in a spiritual way, not just in an external way. Offer your whole life to him as a holy sacrifice. Do not blindly follow the fashions of the world. Instead, let your behavior change, fashioned by your enlightened mind. This is the way to discover the will of God, the way to know what God wants us to do
Jesus, help me give more time to things that are important, less time to things not so important

John 6.35-40: Jesus said to the people "The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. I am the bread of life. Anyone who comes to me will never be hungry. Anyone who believes in me will never be thirsty. It is my Father's will that whoever believes in me will have eternal life"
