Tues Jan 24
Hello from Brazil on day 44
of my trip. Late last Sunday afternoon Ulises and I were privileged to visit the
awesome (no other word!) Statue
of Christ the Redemmer with its incredible views of Rio. Video.
JESUS, REDEEMER, PLEASE BLESS BRAZIL!
On Sunday night outside the church near our hotel Ulises and I encountered a group of people sleeping on the street ...among them were several 14 year old girls. Possibly not "homeless" but sleeping out .... in rough and dangerous circumstances. The NGO Projeto Ruas is going to try to meet up with the girls tonight.

I am so grateful that a number of HK friends have already supported The Clean Start Mercy Project to set up study centres in various African countries for school-less children ... using on-line courses ....to be managed by people who used to be in prison in HK. ....thereby doing something to help two very needy groups of people: school-less children and jobless former prisoners! Genesis
32: As Jacob returned to
his own land of Canaan,
he feared that his brother Esau would try to kill him.
So Jacob, always clever and wily, sent messengers ahead of him
to make friends with Esau.
The messengers reported that Esau was on his way to meet Jacob
and had 400 men with him.
This news increased Jacob's fears
so he divided his family and flocks into two groups,
thinking that if Esau attacked one group
then the other group could escape.
Jacob also prayed hard to God for protection.
Jacob sent gifts of animals to Esau,
hoping that Esau would be friendly to him.
On the night before Jacob and Esau met,
God appeared to Jacob
and gave him a new name: Israel.
Dear God, please
help me to be kind and clever

Psalms
38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me.
Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me
now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I
have on earth.
Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.
Lord, help us understand the
meaning of life

Corinthians 1.1-10:
I, Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle,
send greetings to the church of God in Corinth. May God our Father and the
Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. I never stop thanking God for all the graces
you have received through Jesus Christ. The witness to Christ has been strong among
you. God shares with us the life of his Son,
Jesus.
God helps us to be faithful as followers of Jesus. I appeal to you to be united in belief and
practice.

9.1-33:
Once when Jesus was walking along the road,
he saw a man who had been blind from birth. Jesus spat on the ground and made some mud
with the spittle. He put the mud on the man's eyes, and said
"Go and wash in the Siloam Pool". The blind man went and washed, and came away
able to see. When the blind man heard people criticize
Jesus, he said "Ever since the world began, it has never been
recorded that someone opened the eyes of a man born blind. This man must be from God"
Jesus, please heal my blind friend ....(name)

Hello again from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Yesterday, Jan 22 was day 42
of my trip. Ulises and I attended 8am Mass at a church near our hotel ....
a really beautiful, lively and inspiring Mass .... but as we left the church I
took this photo:

If you enlarge the photo you can see 6 people. One of them is a woman. They are 6 out of around 20,000 sleeping on the streets of Rio. Which is why I am moved to make this appeal for help from HK:

Last Saturday, Jan 20, was a public holiday in Rio ... for the Feast of St
Sebastian. Rio's original name was St Sebastian of Rio de Janeiro in honor
of St. Sebastian who was the namesake and patron of the Portuguese
then-monarch. "Rio de Janeiro" means "River of January"
since it was on January 1 in 1502 that Europeans first entered the area. (
I wonder if the winner of last weekend's Monte Carlo had a bit of Heavenly help?
It
was won by a guy named Sebastian!!!)

Genesis
31: Jacob said to Rachel and Leah
"You know how hard I have worked for your father,
yet he has treated me unfairly - ten times he changed my wages.
Now God has told me to go back to my own land.
So, get ready, we are going."
Jacob took his wives, children and livestock and left
- without telling Laban.
Only after three days did Laban find out
that Jacob had outsmarted him.
Laban chased Jacob, but God told Laban not to hurt Jacob.
So Laban made a treaty with Jacob and let him go on his way.
Dear God, please

you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious,
you in whose light we see light. We believe that if we find our delight in you,
you will grant our heart's desire. And so we commit our lives to you,

8.42-58: Jesus said to the people "If God were your father, you would
love me, since I have come from God and I speak the truth. You avoid the
truth, because your father is the father of lies, the Devil. Abraham rejoiced at the thought of my coming. He saw it in the
future and was glad". The people said "You are not yet 50 years old. How could you
have seen Abraham?" Jesus replied "I tell you, before Abraham
ever was, I Am". The people then picked up stones to throw at Jesus for claiming to
be God. But Jesus safely left the Temple

Genesis 1-2:
God made the world. God made the sun, the moon and the
stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there
was light.
God made the earth with all its plants and trees
and animals and fish and birds.
God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them

own image and said to them
"Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth."
God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good

8: How great is your name, O Lord our God,
through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your
hands,
the moon and stars which you have arranged,

what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world.

Matthew
6.25-34: Jesus said to the crowds that life is about more than food and clothing.
Pointing to some birds flying around, Jesus said:
Look at the birds. They don't sow or reap,
yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
And you are more precious than the birds. Pointing to flowers in the field Jesus said:
How beautiful are the flowers.
They are more beautiful than King Solomon's clothing. If God cares so much about the life of flowers
won't he care even more about human life? So, don't spend your day worrying about
what you are going to eat and drink and wear. Put God first in your life, God and a right
way of life,
then God will look after your physical needs. Don't waste your energy worrying about
tomorrow.
Live life one day at a time.
Heavenly Father, thank you for
caring for
the birds and flowers....and me!

8.1-11: While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, the

adultery. The leaders said to Jesus "According to
the Law of Moses, this woman should be stoned to death. What do you
say?" They said this to test him, looking for something
to use against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the
ground with his finger. Since they kept up their questioning, he looked up
and said to them "If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him
be the first to cast a stone". Then he kept writing on the ground. The leaders went away, beginning with the
eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Jesus said to her
"Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? "No one, sir", she replied.
"Neither do I condemn you", said Jesus. "Go and don't sin
any more"
Jesus, what did you write on the ground? The
leaders' sins?
"If you, O Lord, should write a record of our sins, who could
claim innocence?"

and put hairy animal skins on his
arms.
Before Esau came home, Jacob asked for Isaac's blessing.
Isaac said "Your voice is that of Jacob,
but your arms and scent are those of Esau.
Are you really Esau?"
Jacob said "I am."
Isaac then gave him his solemn blessing.
When Esau found out what had happened,
he was very angry and planned to kill Jacob.
So Rebecca got Jacob to go to Haran until Esau's anger cooled down.
Dear God, please bless
everyone in my family
My
recording of this reading

Psalm 31: Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in
distress.
My eyes are full of tears, my heart full of sorrow. Everyone makes fun of me. My friends don't want to know me.
Save me, Lord, from this mess. I praise you Lord, for you protect those who trust you.
You keep them safe from slander and lies. Be strong, let your heart take courage,
all you who trust in the Lord
I trust in you, Lord. My life
is in your hands

Romans
13.12-14: Let us stop our bad behavior of the past:
drunken orgies, immorality, quarreling, jealousy. Let us live good
lives. Let the Lord Jesus
protect and help us
Jesus, please help me give up bad behavior
Listen

John
7.37-39: During the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem,
Jesus called out loudly in the Temple "If anyone is thirsty,
come to me.Anyone who believes in me, come and drink!" As Scripture says "From his heart will
flow fountains of living water". Jesus was speaking of the Holy
Spirit, which
people who believed in him were to receive. The Spirit had not yet been
given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified
Holy Spirit, flowing from the heart of Jesus,
please increase your influence in my life

Reflection: Imagine someone calling out in the middle of St Peter's in Rome .... or in the middle of any church ..."If you are thirsty come to me"!
