Tues Jan 24

Hello from Brazil on day 44 of my trip. Late last Sunday afternoon Ulises and I were privileged to visit the awesome (no other word!) Statue of Christ the Redemmer with its incredible views of Rio. Video.  JESUS, REDEEMER, PLEASE BLESS BRAZIL!

On Sunday night outside the church near our hotel Ulises and I encountered a group of people sleeping on the street ...among them were several 14 year old girls. Possibly not "homeless" but sleeping out .... in rough and dangerous circumstances. The NGO Projeto Ruas is going to try to meet up with the girls tonight.

Helping street sleepers in Rio ..... Many thanks to the people who have made donations for this very special appeal

I am so grateful that a number of HK friends have already supported  The Clean Start Mercy Project to set up study centres in various African countries for school-less children ... using on-line courses ....to be managed by people who used to be in prison in HK. ....thereby doing something to help two very needy groups of people: school-less children and jobless former prisoners! God bless the people who have made donations to help start this project (updated list) and also those who have helped pay for school fees for children of very special people... and God bless the people who made my trip possible!

Genesis 32: As Jacob returned to his own land of Canaan, he feared that his brother Esau would try to kill him. So Jacob, always clever and wily, sent messengers ahead of him to make friends with Esau. The messengers reported that Esau was on his way to meet Jacob and had 400 men with him. This news increased Jacob's fears so he divided his family and flocks into two groups, thinking that if Esau attacked one group then the other group could escape. Jacob also prayed hard to God for protection. Jacob sent gifts of animals to Esau, hoping that Esau would be friendly to him. On the night before Jacob and Esau met, God appeared to Jacob and gave him a new name: Israel.
Dear God, please help me to be kind and clever

My recording of this reading

Psalms 38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.
Lord, help us understand the meaning of life

Listen

1 Corinthians 1.1-10: I, Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle, send greetings to the church of God in Corinth. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. I never stop thanking God for all the graces you have received through Jesus Christ. The witness to Christ has been strong among you.  God shares with us the life of his Son, Jesus. God helps us to be faithful as followers of Jesus. I appeal to you to be united in belief and practice. Put an end to the differences between you
Jesus, Son of God, thank you for all the graces I have received

John 9.1-33: Once when Jesus was walking along the road, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. Jesus spat on the ground and made some mud with the spittle. He put the mud on the man's eyes, and said "Go and wash in the Siloam Pool". The blind man went and washed, and came away able to see. When the blind man heard people criticize Jesus, he said "Ever since the world began, it has never been recorded that someone opened the eyes of a man born blind. This man must be from God"
Jesus, please heal my blind friend ....(name)

Mon Jan 23

Hello again from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Yesterday, Jan 22 was day 42 of my trip. Ulises and I attended 8am Mass at a church near our hotel  .... a really beautiful, lively and inspiring Mass .... but as we left the church I took this photo:

If you enlarge the photo you can see 6 people. One of them is a woman. They are 6 out of around 20,000 sleeping on the streets of Rio. Which is why I am moved to make this appeal for help from HK:

Helping street sleepers in Rio ..... Many thanks to the people who have made donations for this very special appeal

Last Saturday, Jan 20, was a public holiday in Rio ... for the Feast of St Sebastian. Rio's original name was St Sebastian of Rio de Janeiro in honor of St. Sebastian who was the namesake and patron of the Portuguese then-monarch. "Rio de Janeiro" means "River of January" since it was on January 1 in 1502 that Europeans first entered the area. ( I wonder if the winner of last weekend's Monte Carlo had a bit of Heavenly help? It was won by a guy named Sebastian!!!)

Genesis 31: Jacob said to Rachel and Leah "You know how hard I have worked for your father, yet he has treated me unfairly - ten times he changed my wages. Now God has told me to go back to my own land. So, get ready, we are going." Jacob took his wives, children and livestock and left  - without telling Laban. Only after three days did Laban find out that Jacob had outsmarted him.
Laban chased Jacob, but God told Laban not to hurt Jacob. So Laban made a treaty with Jacob and let him go on his way.
Dear God, please help us to treat everyone fairly

My recording of this reading

Psalms 35-37: O Lord, please save me from people who slander me, you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious, you in whose light we see light. We believe that if we find our delight in you, you will grant our heart's desire. And so we commit our lives to you, confident you will help us in time of trouble.
Lord, please deepen our trust in you, especially in time of trouble

Romans 16.1-25: Please welcome our friend Phoebe, a deaconess in the church at Cenchrea. She has helped many people, including myself. Greetings to all my friends in Rome, especially Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked death to save my life. Be careful of people whose teaching is suspect. Avoid them. Glory to him who is able to give you strength to live according to the Good News
Jesus, help me live according to your Good News. Thank you for the beautiful letter to the Romans

John 8.42-58: Jesus said to the people "If God were your father, you would love me, since I have come from God and I speak the truth. You avoid the truth, because your father is the father of lies, the Devil. Abraham rejoiced at the thought of my coming. He saw it in the future and was glad". The people said "You are not yet 50 years old. How could you have seen Abraham?" Jesus replied "I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I Am". The people then picked up stones to throw at Jesus for claiming to be God. But Jesus safely left the Temple
Jesus, you who existed as God the Son from all eternity, please increase my love for the truth, and help me avoid lies

c.f. readings for Lunar New Year

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made  the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 8: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and stars which you have arranged, then I stop and think: what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world. Everything is subject to our control.
How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

Ephesians 1.9-13: God the Father has let us know his sacred plan: the whole show, everything in heaven and everything in earth, is one big orchestra with Christ as the conductor. We Jews are special instruments in the orchestra. We were chosen to put our hope in Christ before he came. And you non-Jews are also on the stage, now that you have believed the truth of the Good News. All of us have been stamped with the Holy Spirit. He's the composer whose music we are playing
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thank you for the gift of life and the gift of faith. Help me play well!

Matthew 6.25-34: Jesus said to the crowds that life is about more than food and clothing. Pointing to some birds flying around, Jesus said: Look at the birds. They don't sow or reap, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are more precious than the birds. Pointing to flowers in the field Jesus said: How beautiful are the flowers. They are more beautiful than King Solomon's clothing. If God cares so much about the life of flowers won't he care even more about human life? So, don't spend your day worrying about what you are going to eat and drink and wear. Put God first in your life, God and a right way of life, then God will look after your physical needs. Don't waste your energy worrying about tomorrow. Live life one day at a time.
Heavenly Father, thank you for caring for the birds and flowers....and me!

For the Year of the Rabbit/bunny/hare:

A man is driving down the road and runs over a rabbit. He slams on his brakes, gets out and walks up to the flattened bunny. The bunny is obviously expired. A passing car slams on its brakes and screeches to a halt. The driver of that car runs up to the bunny pulls out an aerosol can and sprays the bunny with the aerosol spray. The Bunny jumps up runs a few feet, then stops, turns around and waves its paw at the two men. Runs away a few more feet, stops, turns around and waves at the two men. Runs away a few more feet, stops, turns around and waves at the two men. He continues to do this until he's out of sight. The first driver looks at the man with the aerosol can and says “Wow that is amazing, what is in that can?” the man looks at the can and reads the label “Hair restorer, with a permanent wave”

Genesis 30: Leah gave birth to four sons  - Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah. Rachel had no children and was jealous of her sister Leah. Rachel gave her servant girl Bilhah to Jacob and Bilhah gave birth to two sons - Dan and Naphtali. Leah then gave her servant girl Zilpah to Jacob and Zilpah gave birth to two sons - Gad and Asher. Leah herself had two more sons - Issachar and Zebulun and a daughter - Dinah. Finally Rachel had a baby, a son whom she named Joseph. For many long years Jacob worked for Laban but Laban would not let Jacob return to his own land.
Dear God, please bless everyone in my family

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Fri Jan 20

Hello again from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Yesterday, Jan 19 was day 39 of my trip. My faithful companion Ulises and I had a most encouraging lunch time meeting with members of the NGO, "Projeto Ruas" ("Project Street") which has a beautiful ministry to street sleepers ... of whom there are hundreds in the area near our hotel. The NGO's website is here (can use Google to translate the Portuguese). Last night we took part in a street activity which the NGO has each Thursday night in a area not far from our hotel. More about this on tomorrow's blog .... with a special request for help for the NGO. Another request?!? Well, today's second reading (below) says "no bounds to hope"!

Genesis 29: Jacob went to the home of his uncle Laban, in Haran. Laban had two daughters, Leah and Rachel. Jacob fell in love with Rachel. Jacob made an agreement with Laban: Jacob would work for Laban for seven years in return for marriage to Rachel. For Jacob,  the seven years went like a flash because he loved Rachel so dearly. But Laban forced Jacob to marry both Leah and Rachel and made him work for another seven years as well
Dear God, please help us to enjoy our work

My recording of this reading

Psalm 148: Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious love

Romans 15.4-13: Learn hope from the Scriptures, from the example of people who did not give up, and were helped by God. May the God of hope bring you such joy and peace in your faith, that the power of the Holy Spirit will remove all bounds to hope
Holy Spirit of God, help me understand that no situation in this life is ever
hopeless, that you can enlighten even the darkest place

John 8.1-11: While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, the religious leaders brought to him a woman who had been caught committing adultery. The leaders said to Jesus "According to the Law of Moses, this woman should be stoned to death. What do you say?"  They said this to test him, looking for something to use against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. Since they kept up their questioning, he looked up and said to them "If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to cast a stone". Then he kept writing on the ground. The leaders went away, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Jesus said to her "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? "No one, sir", she replied. "Neither do I condemn you", said Jesus. "Go and don't sin any more"
Jesus, what did you write on the ground? The leaders' sins?  "If you, O Lord, should write a record of our sins, who could claim innocence?"

Genesis 26-27:  God blessed and protected Isaac all his life. When Isaac grew old and was nearly blind, he followed the usual custom of giving his final blessing to his sons. He wanted to bless Esau first, since Esau was his older son. But Rebecca and Jacob tricked Isaac. Jacob dressed in Esau's clothes and put hairy animal skins on his arms. Before Esau came home, Jacob asked for Isaac's blessing. Isaac said "Your voice is that of Jacob, but your arms and scent are those of Esau. Are you really Esau?" Jacob said "I am." Isaac then gave him his solemn blessing. When Esau found out what had happened, he was very angry and planned to kill Jacob. So Rebecca got Jacob to go to Haran until Esau's anger cooled down.
Dear God, please bless everyone in my family

My recording of this reading

Psalm 31: Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress. My eyes are full of tears, my heart full of sorrow. Everyone makes fun of me. My friends don't want to know me. Save me, Lord, from this mess. I praise you Lord, for you protect those who trust you. You keep them safe from slander and lies. Be strong, let your heart take courage, all you who trust in the Lord
I trust in you, Lord. My life is in your hands

Listen

Romans 13.12-14: Let us stop our bad behavior of the past: drunken orgies, immorality, quarreling, jealousy. Let us live good lives. Let the Lord Jesus protect and help us
Jesus, please help me give up bad behavior

Listen

John 7.37-39: During the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, Jesus called out loudly in the Temple "If anyone is thirsty, come to me.Anyone who believes in me, come and drink!" As Scripture says "From his heart will flow fountains of living water". Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit, which people who believed in him were to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified
Holy Spirit, flowing from the heart of Jesus, please increase your influence in my life

Reflection: Imagine someone calling out in the middle of St Peter's in Rome .... or in the middle of any church ..."If you are thirsty come to me"!
