Hello one final time from Lima in Peru  .... on day 57 of my trip. Today I'm due to fly to Los Angeles (9 hours), then 5 hour break, then to HK (15 hours). Therefore this blog is for 3 days ...and I will be "losing" Feb 7!  If there is wifi on the flight to HK I will try to post an update. Thank you for a prayer! Yesterday in Lima I had a happy lunch time meeting with families of two people in prison in HK.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 42: In Joseph's home country of Canaan, the famine was very severe. Joseph's father Jacob said to his sons "I hear there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go to Egypt and buy grain for our families so that we will  not die". All Joseph's brothers, except Benjamin, went to Egypt and arrived at the place where Joseph was selling grain. The brothers had not seen Joseph for about 20 years and they didn't recognize him.  But Joseph recognized them. Joseph put them to the test: he said they were spies, and he told them to bring Benjamin to Egypt to prove they were not spies. He kept Simeon in prison until they returned with Benjamin.
Dear God, please help any places in the world which are suffering from famine

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60:
Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength, and each morning acclaim your love.
O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

Listen

1 Corinthians 11.20-26: Concerning the Lord's Supper, this is what I received from the Lord and then taught you: On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, broke it and said "This is my body which will be broken for you". After supper he took a cup and said "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Each time you drink this cup, drink it in memory of me". Until the Lord comes, therefore, each time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you re-enact the death of the Lord
Jesus, help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

Listen

John 12.23-33: Jesus said to his apostles Andrew and Philip "Now the time has come for me to be glorified.  Unless a wheat grain goes into the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain. But if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. Now sentence is being passed on this world. Now Satan is to be defeated. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all people to myself". By these words, Jesus indicated the kind of death he would die
Jesus, lifted up on the Cross, you are the Saviour of the world

Readings are from Simple Bible
c.f. readings for Sunday 5

Isaiah 57-58: Tell my people their faults, tell the House of Jacob its sins. Tell them that their fasting is a sham. Fasting and injustice cannot go together. This is the sort of fast that pleases the Lord: breaking unjust fetters, sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering and clothing the homeless poor. Do this and you will find healing and peace. Do this and the Lord will give strength to your bones.
Lord, please help me do more to help poor people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord, who take delight in his commands. The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for others. Such people are generous, merciful and just. They take pity and help those in need. They conduct their affairs with  integrity. Open-handed they give to the poor. Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.
Lord, please help me do more for the poor

 Recording

1 Corinthians 1.18 - 2.9: The language of the Cross doesn't make sense for some people. But for us it is God's power to save. While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness. During my stay with you, I relied not on philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the Spirit. The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has seen, and no ear has heard, things beyond human understanding - all that God has prepared for those who love him.
Jesus, crucified Lord, please increase my faith in you

 Recording

Matthew 5.13-48: Jesus said to the crowds: You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, it's no use for anything. You are the light of the world. Let the world see your light, your good deeds. When people see you doing good deeds, people will praise God. I have not come to abolish the Jewish religion. I have come to raise it to a higher level of goodness. Your goodness must not just be something superficial. Your goodness must be something from the heart. You must avoid anger and insult, just like you avoid murder. If you have offended someone, say "Sorry". You must avoid lustful looks and thoughts. Looking at someone lustfully is immorality of the heart. Love and pray for people who are unkind to you. This is the way to practise the highest level of goodness.
Jesus,  please help me practise a higher level of goodness

Reflection on the above readings: We have many opportunities each day to be "the light of the world" ....e.g. by helping poor people (today's first reading), by being forgiving/honest/compassionate/truthful at home/work/school etc .....and by wearing a Cross to encourage people to think about Jesus

Hello again from Lima in Peru  .... on day 55 of my trip. Yesterday Ulises and I travelled to the outskirts of Lima, up into the dusty hills, for a meeting with Fr Omar who for 15 years has been living in one of Lima's poorest areas ....where he has begun all sorts of projects for all sorts of needy people ... and has even built a most beautiful church for the poor. His NGO. His FB

Last night Ulises took a flight back home to Europe. Thank you Ulises for all your help and inspiration and encouragement ....and translation! ...over the past few weeks! God bless!

Genesis 41: Two years later Pharaoh had a dream: he was standing by the river Nile and saw 7 healthy cows feeding on the riverside. Then he saw 7 sickly cows which ate the 7 healthy cows. Pharaoh woke, then had a second dream when he went back to sleep: 7 rich ears of corn on one stalk, followed by 7 withered ears which ate the 7 rich ears. None of Pharaoh's wise men could interpret the dreams. Then the cup-bearer told Pharaoh how Joseph could understand dreams. Pharaoh sent for Joseph and Joseph told Pharaoh the meaning of his dreams: the 7 healthy cows and 7 rich ears meant 7 good years for Egypt; the 7 sickly cows and 7 withered ears meant 7 years of famine. Joseph also told Pharaoh what to do: use a tax to collect one fifth of all grain in the 7 good years; then during the 7 years of famine use the collected grain to feed Egypt. Pharaoh and his ministers were so impressed by Joseph's wisdom that Pharaoh made Joseph governor of the whole of Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself. Pharaoh gave Joseph Asenath, a priest's daughter, as his wife. Joseph was now 30 years old, having spent more than 10 years in Egypt. For the next 7 years Joseph traveled all over Egypt, supervising the collection of grain. Before the famine began, Joseph and Asenath had two sons: Manasseh and Ephraim. When the famine began, Pharaoh told the Egyptians "Go to Joseph and do what he tells you". People from all over Egypt and from other countries went to Joseph to buy grain during the famine.
Dear God, thank you for turning things around in Joseph's life

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

1 Corinthians 10.16 - 11.1: The cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ. The bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ. Avoid anything to do with idol worship.  It doesn't make sense to share in the table of the Lord and in the table of demons. Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God. Never do anything offensive to anyone. Try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for your own advantage, but for the advantage of others, so that they may be saved. Take me for your model, as I take Christ
Jesus, please help me imitate you in my daily life

Listen

John 12.12-19: People who had gone to Jerusalem for the Passover, heard that Jesus was coming down to Jerusalem from Bethany. They used palm branches as they  went out to meet him, shouting "Hosanna! Blessings on the King of Israel who comes in the name of the Lord". Jesus rode a young donkey down the hill, just as the Scriptures had predicted: "Daughter of Sion, behold! Your king is coming, mounted on the colt of a donkey". Some religious leaders said to each other "Look, there is nothing you can do. The whole world is running after him"
Jesus, humbly entering Jerusalem on a donkey, may you be known and welcomed and praised by the whole world

Hello again from Lima in Peru  .... on day 54 of my trip. Genesis 40: Even in jail, God protected Joseph. When two of Pharaoh's officials, his cup-bearer and his baker also were put in jail, Joseph was able to interpret dreams they had. The cup-bearer dreamt he picked grapes and made wine for Pharaoh's cup. Joseph told him the meaning of his dream: in three days he'd be free and back at work as Pharaoh's cup-bearer. The baker dreamt that birds ate bread from a tray on top of his head. Joseph told him: "In three days you'll be hanged, and birds will eat your flesh." And so it happened as Joseph had said: on the third day the cup-bearer went back to work in Pharaoh's palace while the baker was hanged.
Joseph asked the cup-bearer to help him get out of jail, but when the cup-bearer was free,  he forgot about Joseph.
Dear God, please bless everyone who has ever helped me

My recording of this reading

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forget God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

1 Corinthians 9.12-27: I put up with anything, rather than obstruct the Good News of Christ in any way. I make myself all things to all people, in order to save some. All the runners at the stadium are trying to win, but only one of them gets the prize. You must run in the same way, meaning to win the gold medal of eternal life. That is how I run, intent on winning. Therefore I try to stay in top condition, avoiding sloppy living

John 12.1-8: Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, for a dinner at the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. Mary put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet. Then she wiped his feet with her hair. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to betray Jesus, said "Why wasn't this ointment sold and the money given to the poor?" He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the moneybag and would steal from it. Jesus replied "Leave her alone. She is anticipating and honoring my burial. Besides, the poor will always be with you. But I will soon be gone".
Jesus, please help people in charge of money not to steal

Hello from Lima in Peru  .... on day 53 of my trip. Two nights ago Ulises and I met a refugee family (mother, father, 2 young children) from Venezuela .... tying to find a better life than the povetry and chaos in Venezuela. They and many other refugees from Venezuela are staying at a hostel run by a local priest Fr Omar. Yesterday we went to the home of someone who is in prison in HK and to the home of someone who used to be in prison in HK

Readings for Feast of Presentation

Malachi 3.1-2: The Lord God says this: Look, I am going to send my messenger to prepare a way before me. And the Lord you are seeking will suddenly enter his Temple.
Jesus presented in the Temple on this day, we praise you Lord
My recording of this reading

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the  universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Recording

Hebrews 2.14-18: The Son did not become an angel. He became a man, so that he could die for us. By his death he took away the power of the devil. He himself experienced temptation. He is able to help us when we are tempted.
Jesus, please help me when I am tempted to do something wrong

Recording

Luke 2.22-32: When Jesus was 40 days old, his parents took him to the Temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as the Law required. In Jerusalem there was an old man named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died,  he would see the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit, he came to the Temple, took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying "Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen the Savior. He is a light to enlighten the pagans, and he is the glory of your people Israel".
Jesus, true Light of the world, we praise you Lord
Recording

Reflection on the above Bible readings:
Simeon in Luke's Gospel and the three wise men in Matthew's Gospel have the same message: the Baby born
in the stable is the Saviour of not just Israel but of the whole world. May all places, all hearts "let him enter" (Psalms 24-26)

Genesis 39:  The slave traders took Joseph to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's top officials. God was with Joseph. God blessed everything Joseph did. Because Joseph did everything so well Potiphar put Joseph in charge of his household and all his possessions. Because of Joseph, God blessed Potiphar and all his interests. Potiphar's wife tried to seduce Joseph who was very handsome. But day after day Joseph refused to sleep with her. Then one day when Joseph again refused her she tore his clothes and started screaming. She claimed Joseph had tried to seduce her. Potiphar believed his wife and he put Joseph in jail.

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe
Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

We should respect our bodies as a gift from the Lord. Our bodies are not meant for fornication. Avoid sexual activity that avoids commitment. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in you. Let people know that your body is not something to be profaned
Jesus, please help me avoid sex outside marriage

John 11.46-54: The religious leaders had a meeting to decide what to do about Jesus. They said "If this man keeps on doing miracles, everyone will follow him. Then the Romans will see him as a threat, and they will wipe out our nation". The main  leader said "It is better for one man to die for the people, than for the whole nation to be destroyed". These words had more meaning than the leader realized, since Jesus was to die not just for the nation, but for the whole world. Since the leaders wanted to kill him, Jesus went to a remote area near the desert, and stayed there with his disciples
Jesus, please help me better understand how your death saved the world

Tues Jan 31

Hello again one final time from Brazil  .... on day 51 of my trip. Right now it's about 3am Tuesday Jan 31 in HK but where I am, at Sao Paulo airport in Brazil, it's about 4pm Monday Jan 30 as I prepare to take a flight to another place. Before leaving my hotel around midday I paid a final visit to the homeless people living in the park opposite the hotel ....giving them some food and drink one more time. Maybe there will be another photo of them on tomorrow's blog. Previous photos are on yesterday's blog, below. Hearing how some of them - women as well as men - have been sleeping in the park for several years ... gives me energy to again ask help from HK for this project to help homeless people in this part of the world:

Genesis 38: Jacob's son Judah had three sons - Er, Onan and Shelah. Er married Tamar, but not long after the wedding, Er died. So, according to custom, Judah asked Onan to marry Tamar and have a child for his brother. But Onan spilt his seed each time he slept with Tamar, so Tamar did not conceive. Judah then said to Tamar "Wait till Shelah grows up, and you can marry him." But when Shelah was older, he still hadn't been given to Tamar. So Tamar tricked her father-in-law Judah. She dressed as a prostitute and conceived by Judah. Judah did not know that the woman was Tamar; her face was covered. Three months later  Judah was told that his daughter-in-law was pregnant after acting as a prostitute. Judah followed the harsh local custom and said "Take her outside and burn her." But Tamar  produced Judah's seal, stick and cord which he had given to her as a pledge when he had sex with her. So Judah admitted his guilt and freed Tamar who gave birth to twin boys.
Dear God, please help married people to be happy

Psalm 46: God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come and consider the works of the Lord and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God".
Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence, especially when we are in trouble

Listen

1 Corinthians 5.8-11: Get rid of all evil and wickedness from your life. Replace them with sincerity and truth. People who do wrong will not inherit the kingdom of God: people of immoral lives, idolaters, adulterers, catamites, sodomites, thieves, usurers, drunkards, slanderers and swindlers. Some of you were like that once, but now you have been washed clean and sanctified by Jesus Christ and his Spirit
Jesus, help me avoid doing bad things. Help me do more good things

John 11.1-44: Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha lived in the village of Bethany. When Lazarus became very sick, the sisters sent a message to Jesus "Lord, your dear friend is very sick". By the time  Jesus and his disciples arrived in Bethany, Lazarus was dead and buried for 4 days. Martha said to Jesus "If you had been here, my brother would not have died". Jesus replied "I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, he will have life after death". Jesus said to Mary and Martha "Where have you put him?"  Jesus cried as he went to the tomb. The tomb was a cave with a stone at the entrance. Jesus said "Take the stone away". Then he called out in a loud voice "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, wrapped in burial clothes. Jesus said "Unwrap him and let him go free"
Jesus, you are the Resurrection and the Life. Please give eternal life to my friend (....name...) who died recently
