6. My predecessor Benedict XVI likewise
proposed "eliminating the structural causes of the dysfunctions of the
world economy and correcting models of growth which have proved incapable of
ensuring respect for the environment". He observed that the world
cannot be analyzed by isolating only one of its aspects, since "the book of
nature is one and indivisible", and includes the environment, life,
sexuality, the family, social relations, and so forth. It follows that "the
deterioration of nature is closely connected to the culture which shapes human
coexistence". Pope Benedict asked us to recognize that the natural
environment has been gravely damaged by our irresponsible behaviour. The social
environment has also suffered damage. Both are ultimately due to the same evil:
the notion that there are no indisputable truths to guide our lives, and hence
human freedom is limitless. We have forgotten that "man is not only a
freedom which he creates for himself. Man does not create himself. He is spirit
and will, but also nature". With paternal concern, Benedict urged us
to realize that creation is harmed "where we ourselves have the final word,
where everything is simply our property and we use it for ourselves alone. The
misuse of creation begins when we no longer recognize any higher instance than
ourselves, when we see nothing else but ourselves".[13]

Reflection: No other person in history has claimed to be The Way, The Truth and The Life!

I most clearly remember this day in 1965. It was a Sunday
and in the afternoon my dear father, mother and brother farewelled me from
South Brisbane station for the long train trip to Melbourne ... where in nearby
Geelong I began my studies for the priesthood. .... and for the next 30 years
followed Geelong football team (... until a team from Brisbane entered the
competion)!

Yesterday morning I enjoyed being back at St Paul's Parish in Yau Ma Tei for the 8.30 Chinese Mass .... followed by 11am English Mass at the Dr Jesus Centre for domestic workers staying at MercyHK shelters.
Over the past few days I have been really happy to meet up with three former drug addicts - two men and one woman - who are now off drugs. For many years the two men were begging on the streets of Jordan to support their habit. All three people have been greatly helped by MercyHK social workers.

Si: 5. Saint
John Paul II became increasingly concerned about this issue. In his
first Encyclical he warned that human beings frequently seem "to see
no other meaning in their natural environment than what serves for immediate use
and consumption". Subsequently, he would call for a global
ecological conversion. At the
same time, he noted that little effort had been made to "safeguard the
moral conditions for an authentic human
ecology". The
destruction of the human environment is extremely serious, not only because God
has entrusted the world to us men and women, but because human life is itself a
gift which must be defended from various forms of debasement.
Every effort to protect and improve our world entails profound changes in
"lifestyles, models of production and consumption, and the established
structures of power which today govern societies". Authentic human
development has a moral character. It presumes full respect for the human
person, but it must also be concerned for the world around us and "take
into account the nature of each being and of its mutual connection in an ordered
system". Accordingly, our human ability to transform reality must
proceed in line with God's original gift of all that is.

Reflection on today's first reading: Something I've often thought about: why didn't Joseph send a message to let his father know he was alive? These answers are not very satisfying. The latter part of this article has more merit.

On last week's flight from Los Angeles to HK my Pavilion laptop
stopped working and produced a message saying the battery needed replacing.
Yesterday I let Pavilion charge for a couple of hours ....then said a prayer
.... and the Pavilion came back to life!

Yesterday morning two support members of the Saturday prayer meeting for healing at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan were married at a church on HK side ... had their reception at lunch time .... and came to the prayer meeting in the afternoon! God bless you Peter and Jenny!
And yesterday afternoon an old friend who has been "at university" (let the reader understand) many, many times ....and has once again "graduated" ... was giving free haircuts to a number of people at MercyHK's centre in Temple Street. He is a skilled hairdresser and has worked as such at "university"!

Si:4. In
1971, eight years after Pacem in
Terris, Blessed Pope Paul VI referred to the ecological concern as
"a tragic consequence" of unchecked human activity: "Due to an
ill-considered exploitation of nature, humanity runs the risk of destroying it
and becoming in turn a victim of this degradation". He spoke in
similar terms to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
about the potential for an "ecological catastrophe under the effective
explosion of industrial civilization", and stressed "the urgent need
for a radical change in the conduct of humanity", inasmuch as "the
most extraordinary scientific advances, the most amazing technical abilities,
the most astonishing economic growth, unless
they are accompanied by authentic social and moral progress, will definitively
turn against man".[3]

false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your

Corinthians 1.18 - 2.9: The
language of the Cross doesn't make sense for some people. But
for us it is God's power to save. While the Jews demand miracles and the
Greeks require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews
an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness. During my stay with
you, I relied not on philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the
Spirit. The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has seen, and no ear has
heard, things beyond human understanding - all that God has prepared for those
who love him.

the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, it's no use for anything.
You are the light of the world. Let the world see your light, your good deeds.
When people see you doing good deeds, people will praise God. I have not come to
abolish the Jewish religion. I
have come to raise it to a higher level of goodness. Your goodness must
not just be something superficial. Your goodness must be something from the
heart. You must avoid anger and insult, just like you avoid murder. If you have
offended someone, say "Sorry". You must avoid lustful looks and
thoughts. Looking at someone lustfully is immorality of the heart. Love and pray
for people who are unkind to you. This is the way to practise the highest level
of goodness.
Jesus, please help me practise a higher level of goodness

Reflection on the above readings: We like our children to go to a school which has a high standard. We like food and other products produced by restaurants/factories with a high standard of hygiene. As Christians we are called to aim for a high standard. Jesus hits the nail on the head in today's Gospel: he continually calls us to a higher level of goodness.

as we are with global environmental deterioration,

his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The

were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold about 35
liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water"
and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the
man in charge of the banquet". When the man tasted the water, it had
turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the
best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus

Reflection on the above readings: Without Mary's request, Jesus would not have changed water to wine. Our prayer requests also can get "water" (e.g. sickness) changed to wine (good health)

This
sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her
by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her.
We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her
at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected
in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in
all forms of life. This is why the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is
among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she "groans
in travail"
(Rom 8:22).
We have forgotten that we ourselves are dust of the earth (cf. Gen 2:7);
our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we receive
life and refreshment from her waters.

Genesis 44: Joseph had his
brothers' sacks filled with free grain,
then he gave them back their money.
But he again put them to the test:
he got his servants to put his special chalice
in Benjamin's sack.
Not long after the brothers left,
Joseph's servants caught up with them
and asked them why had they stolen Joseph's chalice.
They replied that they would never dream of doing such a thing
and that if the chalice was found in anyone's sack
that man would die.
Each man's sack was opened, beginning with the oldest,
and finally the chalice was discovered in Benjamin's sack.
On returning to Joseph's home
the brothers pleaded with Joseph not to punish Benjamin.
Judah even offered to be Joseph's slave for life
in return for Benjamin's freedom

Corinthians 12.12-30:
A human body is made of many parts: arms,
legs, muscles, eyes etc.
Every part is important and needed for the body to be healthy. The church is like a body. We are the body's
members. Some of us are apostles, some prophets, some teachers etc. The members of the church must care about
every member of the church. Everyone is important. The spiritual health of
each member affects the health of the whole body

meal just before the Passover, Jesus got up from the table, removed his
outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist as an
apron. He then poured water into a basin, and like a
slave, began to wash the disciples' feet, wiping them with the towel
he was wearing. After washing their feet he said to them
"You are right in calling me Master and Lord. If I, then, the
Lord and Master, have humbly served you, you should humbly serve one
another. I have given you an example so that you may
copy what I have done for you"

Reflection: By example and words, Pope Francis is continually trying to get us to increase our imitation of Jesus' own example

At Los Angeles airport security check near the x-ray
machine a few nights ago, a young security guard asked me if I was over 75 ...
and after I said "yes" he asked a further question: "Do you have
a pace maker". I replied "No" and then ....being a cheeky
Australian, I said to him "How about you? Do you have a pace maker?"
We both had a good laugh!

Hello from HK where I arrived back yesterday morning after a long flight from Los Angeles which followed a long flight from Lima, Peru (which was an extra hour longer because, as plane was on runway about to take off, there was an announcement "we are going back to the gate .... to get more fuel"!
On the two flights I watched several
documentaries including:
Endangered
(about four journalists), Triumph of the
Legend (a Spanish movie about Costa Ricca world boxing champion Hanna
Gabriels), Ice
on Fire, and The
11th Hour. The last two are about climate change and are quite
alarming. So ... to motivate myself and encourage dear readers to increase
motivation about the issue of climate change I am going to again post items from
Pope Francis' Laudato Si:

"Praise be to you, my Lord". In
the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our
common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother
who opens her arms to embrace us. "Praise be to you, my Lord,
through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces
various fruit with coloured flowers and herbs"

Joseph invited them to his home for a meal.
Simeon was allowed to join them.
The brothers still didn't recognize Joseph.
Joseph was moved when he saw Benjamin, his full blood brother.
Joseph left the company and cried for quite some time.
When Joseph rejoined the meal
he gave the brothers a hearty meal which they all enjoyed.
Joseph arranged that Benjamin's portion was extra large.
