Letters from a very young local HK woman soon to be sentenced for drug trafficking - here (Nov 25 ...). Yesterday I spent much time preparing a mitigation letter for her.

Laudato Si:
26. Many of those who possess more resources and economic or political power seem mostly to be concerned with masking the problems or concealing their symptoms, simply making efforts to reduce some of the negative impacts of climate change. However, many of these symptoms indicate that such effects will continue to worsen if we continue with current models of production and consumption. There is an urgent need to develop policies so that, in the next few years, the emission of carbon dioxide and other highly polluting gases can be drastically reduced, for example, substituting for fossil fuels and developing sources of renewable energy. Worldwide there is minimal access to clean and renewable energy. There is still a need to develop adequate storage technologies. Some countries have made considerable progress, although it is far from constituting a significant proportion. Investments have also been made in means of production and transportation which consume less energy and require fewer raw materials, as well as in methods of construction and renovating buildings which improve their energy efficiency. But these good practices are still far from widespread.

Exodus 17: In one place where there was no water the people grumbled against Moses: "Give us water to drink or else we will die." Moses asked God for help and God told Moses to strike a large rock with his staff. When Moses did this, water flowed from the rock. In another place the Israelites were attacked by the Amalekites. Moses prayed while Joshua led the people in battle. As long as Moses kept his arms raised up in prayer, the Israelites were winning. But when Moses let his arms down, the Amalekites started winning. So Aaron and Hur got Moses to sit on a rock and they supported his hands until sunset. Joshua and the people then won the battle.
Dear God, please help us understand the power of prayer

Psalm 94: O Lord,  Judge of the earth, how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches. The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart, God's consolation calms my soul
Lord, when cares and troubles increase, please help us to trust in you.

Galatians 3.26-28: Through faith in Christ Jesus, you are children of God. When you were baptized, you entered into a special relationship of friendship with Christ. This relationship cancels out old labels like Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. These old labels have been replaced by a new one hanging around your heart: Made in Christ
Jesus, help me better understand our relationship

John 20.1-10: Before dawn the next morning, Sunday, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb. She saw the stone had been moved from the tomb's entrance. She ran to Peter and John and said "Someone has taken the Lord out of the tomb". They ran back to the tomb. Peter went in first. He saw that the linen cloths were on the ground. But the cloth that had been around Jesus' head was not on the ground. It was neatly folded and in a place by itself. Then John went into the tomb. He saw, and he believed
Jesus, I believe you rose from the dead. Please increase my faith

Laudato Si:
25. Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods. It represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day. Its worst impact will probably be felt by developing countries in coming decades. Many of the poor live in areas particularly affected by phenomena related to warming, and their means of subsistence are largely dependent on natural reserves and ecosystemic services such as agriculture, fishing and forestry. They have no other financial activities or resources which can enable them to adapt to climate change or to face natural disasters, and their access to social services and protection is very limited. For example, changes in climate, to which animals and plants cannot adapt, lead them to migrate; this in turn affects the livelihood of the poor, who are then forced to leave their homes, with great uncertainty for their future and that of their children. There has been a tragic rise in the number of migrants seeking to flee from the growing poverty caused by environmental degradation. They are not recognized by international conventions as refugees; they bear the loss of the lives they have left behind, without enjoying any legal protection whatsoever. Sadly, there is widespread indifference to such suffering, which is even now taking place throughout our world. Our lack of response to these tragedies involving our brothers and sisters points to the loss of that sense of responsibility for our fellow men and women upon which all civil society is founded.

Exodus 16: As the Israelites traveled through the desert they began to complain about not having enough food. So God rained down bread, manna, from heaven in the form of a coating of dew which appeared on the ground each morning, as well as flocks of quails which came every evening. For forty years the Israelites ate manna and quails, bread and birds.
Dear God, thank you for the food we have each day

Psalm 93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high. Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted. Holiness is fitting to your house O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Galatians 2.16-20: What makes us God's friends is not obedience to the Law, but faith in Jesus Christ. I have been crucified with Christ, and I live now, not with my own life, but with the life of Christ who lives in me. The life I now live in this body, I live in faith: faith in the Son of God who loved me and who sacrificed himself for my sake

John 19.38-42: Joseph of Arimathaea,  a disciple of Jesus, asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Pilate agreed and Jesus' body was taken down from the cross. Since the Passover was due to begin at sunset, they put the body in an  unused tomb close to the place of Crucifixion

Laudato Si:
24. Warming has effects on the carbon cycle. It creates a vicious circle which aggravates the situation even more, affecting the availability of essential resources like drinking water, energy and agricultural production in warmer regions, and leading to the extinction of part of the planet's biodiversity. The melting in the polar ice caps and in high altitude plains can lead to the dangerous release of methane gas, while the decomposition of frozen organic material can further increase the emission of carbon dioxide. Things are made worse by the loss of tropical forests which would otherwise help to mitigate climate change. Carbon dioxide pollution increases the acidification of the oceans and compromises the marine food chain. If present trends continue, this century may well witness extraordinary climate change and an unprecedented destruction of ecosystems, with serious consequences for all of us. A rise in the sea level, for example, can create extremely serious situations, if we consider that a quarter of the world's population lives on the coast or nearby, and that the majority of our megacities are situated in coastal areas.

Genesis 12-13: God said to a man in the land of Haran named Abraham, "Leave your own country and go to a new land I will give you. I will make you into a great nation." So Abraham and his family left the land of Haran and moved to the land of Canaan. God said to Abraham, "I will make your descendants as many as the number of dust particles on the ground ....an uncountable number." Even though Abraham and his wife Sarah were old and had no children, Abraham believed God's promise to give them many descendants.

Psalm 33: Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious love

2 Timothy 1.6-8: I remind you to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I prayed over you with the laying on of hands. Matthew 17.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow. The  prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him." The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer.

WE BEHOLD THE SPLENDOR OF GOD, SHINING ON THE FACE OF JESUS. WE BEHOLD THE SPLENDOR OF GOD SHINING ON THE FACE OF THE SON.

AND OH HOW HIS BEAUTY TRANSFORMS US, THE WONDER OF PRESENCE ABIDING. TRANSPARENT HEARTS GIVE REFLECTION OF TABOR'S LIGHT WITHIN, OF TABOR'S LIGHT WITHIN

WE BEHOLD THE SPLENDOR OF GOD SHINING ON THE FACE OF JESUS. WE BEHOLD THE SPLENDOR OF GOD SHINING ON THE FACE OF THE SON.

JESUS, LORD OF GLORY, JESUS, BELOVED SON. OH HOW GOOD TO BE WITH YOU, HOW GOOD TO SHARE YOUR LIGHT, HOW GOOD TO SHARE YOUR LIGHT

WE BEHOLD THE SPLENDOR OF GOD SHINING ON THE FACE OF JESUS. WE BEHOLD THE SPLENDOR OF GOD SHINING ON THE FACE OF THE SON.

Laudato Si:
23. The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all. At the global level, it is a complex system linked to many of the essential conditions for human life. A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system. In recent decades this warming has been accompanied by a constant rise in the sea level and, it would appear, by an increase of extreme weather events, even if a scientifically determinable cause cannot be assigned to each particular phenomenon. Humanity is called to recognize the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption, in order to combat this warming or at least the human causes which produce or aggravate it. It is true that there are other factors (such as volcanic activity, variations in the earth’s orbit and axis, the solar cycle), yet a number of scientific studies indicate that most global warming in recent decades is due to the great concentration of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides and others) released mainly as a result of human activity. As these gases build up in the atmosphere, they hamper the escape of heat produced by sunlight at the earth’s surface. The problem is aggravated by a model of development based on the intensive use of fossil fuels, which is at the heart of the worldwide energy system. Another determining factor has been an increase in changed uses of the soil, principally deforestation for agricultural purposes.

Exodus 15: The Israelites used this prayer to thank and praise God: "The Lord has covered himself in glory, horse and rider he has thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song, he is my salvation. This is my God, I praise him. The Lord is his name. Lord, when you blew over the waters, they piled high on two sides. Lord, only you are God, there is no other. Lord, you are our king for ever."

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil.  May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

Galatians 2.11-14: Not long after this, when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, since he was in the wrong. He had been accustomed to eating with non-Jews, but when some friends of James arrived, people who insisted that all believers should be circumcised, he kept away from the non-Jews. When I saw that Peter was not respecting the true meaning of the Good News, I said to him in front of everyone "You have no right to make non-Jews adopt Jewish customs"

John 19.31-37: The next day was the Passover. To prevent the bodies remaining on the crosses during the Passover, the soldiers broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead. Instead of breaking  his legs, they pierced his side with a spear.  Immediately there came out blood and water. And so the Scriptures were fulfilled "Not one of his bones will be broken" and "They will look on the one they have pierced"

Laudato Si:
22. These problems are closely linked to a throwaway culture which affects the excluded just as it quickly reduces things to rubbish. To cite one example, most of the paper we produce is thrown away and not recycled. It is hard for us to accept that the way natural ecosystems work is exemplary: plants synthesize nutrients which feed herbivores; these in turn become food for carnivores, which produce significant quantities of organic waste which give rise to new generations of plants. But our industrial system, at the end of its cycle of production and consumption, has not developed the capacity to absorb and reuse waste and by-products. We have not yet managed to adopt a circular model of production capable of preserving resources for present and future generations, while limiting as much as possible the use of non-renewable resources, moderating their consumption, maximizing their efficient use, reusing and recycling them. A serious consideration of this issue would be one way of counteracting the throwaway culture which affects the entire planet, but it must be said that only limited progress has been made in this regard.

Exodus 14: Not long after the Israelites left Egypt Pharaoh again changed his mind. He decided to catch the Israelites and make them return to Egypt. The Israelites were near the edge of the Sea of Reeds when they saw the Egyptians approaching. The Israelites cried out in fear but Moses said to them "Do not be afraid. God will do the fighting for you." God then told Moses to stretch out his staff over the sea. After he did so, a strong wind blew all night and caused the waters to part. Then the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on both sides.
The Egyptians gave chase and also went into the sea. When the Israelites had crossed to the other side Moses again stretched out his staff over the sea and this time the sea returned to its normal flow, drowning all the Egyptians. The people offered thanksgiving and praise to God.

Dear God, please rescue people in trouble, just as you rescued the Israelites when they were in trouble

My recording of this reading

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.
Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

Galatians 2.1-9: 14 years after that first visit, I again went to Jerusalem, with Barnabas and Titus. I explained to the Christian leaders how I had been proclaiming the Good News to non-Jews. James, Peter and John shook hands with us as a sign of partnership. We were to preach to the non-Jews, and they to the Jews
Jesus, please help all Christians to avoid disunity

John 19.25-30: Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Seeing his mother and John the apostle standing near her, Jesus said to his mother "He is your son". Then to John he said "She is your mother".  From that moment, John regarded Mary as his own mother. Jesus said "My work is finished". Then he bowed his head and died
We adore you  Lord Jesus  and we praise you, because you have redeemed the world

Reflection:  "His mother's sister" means the mother of John. So to say that John has a new/second mother is quite special. For many Bible scholars, John represents all Christians ... maybe all peoples ... for whom Mary is our spiritual mother.

Thu March 2

Yesterday I went to the computer centre in Sham Shui Po to get Windows 10 installed in my old PC. Last week I heard how about half of the students in a nearby secondary school are from "divided flats" (= poor people's homes) so I have arranged for my old PC with its monitor and keyboard to be given to the school for a poor family. If any readers would like to do the same, pls email me: jdwomi@gmail.com

Yesterday afternoon at the Mercy Centre in Yau Ma Tei, our social workers conducted our usual gathering for local drug addicts, and then in the evening at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan they conducted our usual gathering for Nepal drug addicts. God bless all who attended both gatherings!

Laudato Si:
21. Account must also be taken of the pollution produced by residue, including dangerous waste present in different areas. Each year hundreds of millions of tons of waste are generated, much of it non-biodegradable, highly toxic and radioactive, from homes and businesses, from construction and demolition sites, from clinical, electronic and industrial sources.
The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. In many parts of the planet, the elderly lament that once beautiful landscapes are now covered with rubbish. Industrial waste and chemical products utilized in cities and agricultural areas can lead to bioaccumulation in the organisms of the local population, even when levels of toxins in those places are low. Frequently no measures are taken until after people's health has been irreversibly affected.

Exodus 12-13: God said to Moses and Aaron "From now on, this month is to be the first month of your year. On the evening of the 14th day of this month each family must kill and eat a one year old male sheep or goat. Some of its blood must be put on your front door. You must eat it in a hurry, with a belt round your waist, sandals on your feet and a staff in your hand. This night I will go through the land of Egypt and strike every first-born Egyptian. But when I see the blood on your doors I shall PASS OVER your homes and you shall be unharmed. Each year you must remember this night. Each year you must observe this feast of the Passover. You also must consecrate all first-born to me."

That night God indeed struck dead the first-born of all the Egyptians, including the son of Pharaoh. There was great mourning in Egypt and Pharaoh finally agreed to let the Israelites go. The Israelites now numbered about 600,000 men, having been in Egypt exactly 430 years. As the people travelled, God went before them in the form of a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night.

Dear God, please help me understand the full meaning of the Passover story

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.

Ontario time, Saturday March 4 @ 7pm Ontario time, W5 (Canada's "Sixty Minutes") will post a report about a 64 year old Canadian woman tricked to take drugs to HK from Ethiopia. Trailer here

Laudato Si:
20. Some forms of pollution are part of people's daily experience. Exposure to atmospheric pollutants produces a broad spectrum of health hazards, especially for the poor, and causes millions of premature deaths. People take sick, for example, from breathing high levels of smoke from fuels used in cooking or heating. There is also pollution that affects everyone, caused by transport, industrial fumes, substances which contribute to the acidification of soil and water, fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and agrotoxins in general. Technology, which, linked to business interests, is presented as the only way of solving these problems, in fact proves incapable of seeing the mysterious network of relations between things and so sometimes solves one problem only to create others.

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Readings are from Simple Bible

Exodus 11: One last time God sent Moses to Pharaoh, with this message: "Tonight at midnight, God's angel will pass through Egypt. All the first-born in the land of Egypt will die, except the first-born of the Israelites."
Dear God, please bless everyone in Egypt!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Listen

Galatians 1.1-7: To the church of Galatia, from Paul, an apostle appointed not by man  but by Jesus Christ. Trouble makers among you have changed the Good News. I am astonished that you have begun following their false version of the Good News
Jesus, don't let people be deceived by anyone who waters down or changes your Good News

Listen

John 19.4-16: Pilate now put Jesus on display and again told the leaders "I find no case against him". The leaders replied "According to our Law he must die, since he claims to be the Son of God. If you free him, you are no friend of the Roman Emperor". Eventually Pilate gave in to them and handed Jesus over to be crucified
Jesus, please help all judges to stand up for the truth and not make false judgments

Reflection: Paul usually starts in a friendly way in nearly all his letters. But not so in Galatians. He is upset .... and shows it!

Surely in 2,00 years no other church document has used the term "agrotoxins" (Laudato Si, above)
