33. It is not enough, however, to think of
different species merely as potential "resources" to be exploited,
while overlooking the fact that they have value in themselves. Each year sees
the disappearance of thousands of plant and animal species which we will never
know, which our children will never see,
because they have been lost for ever. The great majority become extinct for
reasons related to human activity. Because of us, thousands of species will no
longer give glory to God by their very existence, nor convey their message to
us. We have no such right.

Exodus
23: Moses told the people:
"Don't be unfair to anyone, friend or foe.
Work for six days, then rest on the seventh day.
Work your land for six years,
then let the land rest and recover in the seventh year.
Three times a year you must celebrate special feasts: the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
the Feast of Harvest,
the Feast of Ingathering.
On these three feasts
all men must present themselves before the Lord."
God's promise:
"I will send an angel before you to protect you
and bring you to the land I have prepared for you.
Eventually you will possess this special land
and take it over from the peoples who live there now."

100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth.
Serve the Lord with gladness.
Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we

We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks.
Enter his temple with songs of praise.
Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord,
eternal his merciful love.
He is faithful from age to age.

Matthew
3.1-17:
About 30 years after
Jesus was born,
a man began preaching repentance,
and baptizing people in the river Jordan. This man was John the
Baptist.
His message was
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand". John fulfilled the
prophecy:
"A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord".
John said "I
baptize you with water,
but one is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit".
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened,
and Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven
said
"This is my Son, the Beloved.
My favor rests on him".
Jesus,
please help me to prepare your way, like John the Baptist

an increase in the cost of food and the various products which depend on its
use. Some studies warn that an acute water shortage may occur within a few
decades unless urgent action is taken. The environmental repercussions could

conceivable that the control of water by large multinational businesses may

Exodus 17: In
one place where there was no water the people grumbled against Moses: "Give
us water to drink or else we will die." Moses
asked God for help and God told Moses to strike a large rock with his staff.
When Moses did this, water flowed from the rock. In another place the Israelites
were attacked by the Amalekites. Moses prayed while Joshua led the people in
battle. As long as Moses kept his arms raised up in prayer, the Israelites were
winning. But when Moses let his arms down, the Amalekites started winning. So
Aaron and Hur got Moses to sit on a rock and they supported his hands until
sunset. Joshua and the people then won the battle.

Even as the quality of available water is constantly diminishing, in some places
there is a growing tendency, despite its scarcity, to privatize this resource,
turning it into a commodity subject to the laws of the market. Yet access
to safe drinkable water is a basic and universal human right, since it is
essential to human survival and, as such, is a condition for the exercise of
other human rights. Our world has a grave social debt towards the poor who
lack access to drinking water, because they
are denied the right to a life consistent with their inalienable dignity.
This debt can be paid partly by an increase in funding to provide clean water
and sanitary services among the poor. But water continues to be wasted, not only
in the developed world but also in developing countries which possess it in
abundance. This shows that the problem of water is partly an educational and
cultural issue, since there is little
awareness of the seriousness of such behaviour within a context of great
inequality.

One particularly serious problem is the quality of water available to the poor.
Every day, unsafe water results in many deaths and the spread of water-related
diseases, including those caused by microorganisms and chemical substances.
Dysentery and cholera, linked to inadequate hygiene and water supplies, are a
significant cause of suffering and of infant mortality. Underground water
sources in many places are threatened by the pollution produced in certain
mining, farming and industrial activities, especially in countries lacking
adequate regulation or controls. It is not only a question of industrial waste. Detergents
and chemical products, commonly used in many places of the world, continue to
pour into our rivers, lakes and seas.

28. Fresh drinking water is an issue of
primary importance, since it is indispensable for human life and for supporting
terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Sources of fresh water are necessary for
health care, agriculture and industry. Water supplies used to be relatively
constant, but now in many places demand exceeds the sustainable supply, with
dramatic consequences in the short and long term. Large cities dependent on
significant supplies of water have experienced periods of shortage, and at
critical moments these have not always been administered with sufficient
oversight and impartiality. Water
poverty especially affects Africa where large sectors of the population
have no access to safe drinking water or experience droughts which impede
agricultural production. Some countries have areas rich in water while others
endure drastic scarcity.

The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it,
and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low.
Let us kneel before the God who made us.
For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our
life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Galatians
4.4-6: When the appointed time came,
God sent his
Son, born of a woman, born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of
the Law, and to enable us to be adopted as children of God, brothers and
sisters of his Son. The proof that we are children is that God has
sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts: the Spirit that cries
"Abba, Father"
Jesus, help me understand how I have been
adopted,
how you are my Brother

John
20.11-18: Peter and John went home. Mary Magdalene
remained at the tomb, crying. When she looked inside the tomb, she saw two
angels in white. She also saw Jesus standing there, though she did not
recognize him. Jesus said "Woman, why are you
crying?". Mary thought he was the gardener so she said to him
"If you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him". Jesus said "Mary" and she recognized
him. Jesus then said "I will ascend to my Father". Mary went and told the disciples all she had
seen and heard
Jesus, please bless people who are crying at
funerals today. May awareness of your presence bring them peace and
strength for the days ahead

Reflection: The apostles ... the men... had left after inspecting the empty tomb ...male left brain thinking ... "no use staying around ....nothing we can do".... but Mary Magdalene ... woman's right brain tuition .... "I can't leave". A good reflections for International Women's Day!

At the women's prison yesterday it was great not to have to
wear a mask ....although now I'm finding I don't recognize some people after not
having seen them without a mask for more than two years!
