Tues March 28
Hello from St Paul's retreat centre in Sheung Shui where I am attending the monthly O.M.I. gathering. Yesterday morning I went to Lo Wu women's prison for a few hours .... and hope to go there again this afternoon after the meeting finishes at midday. It's wet and cold here ...but one good thing at the centre: the squirrels are back! Haven't seen them for the past year or two.

47. Furthermore,
when media and the digital world become
omnipresent, their influence can stop people from learning how to live wisely,
to think deeply and to love generously. In this context, the great sages
of the past run the risk of going unheard amid the noise and distractions of an
information overload. Efforts need to be made to help these media become sources
of new cultural progress for humanity and not a threat to our deepest riches.
True wisdom, as the fruit of self-examination, dialogue and generous encounter
between persons, is not acquired by a mere accumulation of data which eventually
leads to overload and confusion, a sort of mental pollution. Real relationships
with others, with all the challenges they entail, now tend to be replaced by a
type of internet communication which enables us to choose or eliminate
relationships at whim, thus giving rise to a new type of contrived emotion which
has more to do with devices and displays than with other people and with nature.
Today's media do enable us to communicate and to share our knowledge and
affections. Yet at times they also shield us from direct contact with the pain,
the fears and the joys of others and the complexity of their personal
experiences. For this reason, we should be concerned that, alongside the
exciting possibilities offered by these media, a deep and melancholic
dissatisfaction with interpersonal relations, or a harmful sense of isolation,
can also arise.

The social dimensions of global change include the effects of technological
innovations on employment, social exclusion, an inequitable distribution and
consumption of energy and other services, social breakdown, increased violence
and a rise in new forms of social aggression, drug trafficking, growing drug use
by young people, and the loss of identity. These
are signs that the growth of the past two centuries has not always led to an
integral development and an improvement in the quality of life. Some of
these signs are also symptomatic of real social decline, the silent rupture of
the bonds of integration and social cohesion.

Daniel 13: A
beautiful woman named Susanna was condemned to death on a false charge of
immorality. God stirred Daniel's heart to help Susanna. Daniel confronted
Susanna's two accusers, two elderly Jewish men. Daniel had the two men
separated.
He then asked them individually where the alleged crime took place. One of them
said "under a mastic tree." The other said "under an oak
tree." The people then realized the men were lying. The
people praised God for giving such wisdom to Daniel. Susanna was freed.
The two men were executed, as required by the Law.

I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You
are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You
have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have

follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for
ever and ever.

8.1-11: While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, the
religious leaders brought to him a women who had been caught committing
adultery. The leaders said to Jesus "According to
the Law of Moses, this woman should be stoned to death. What do you
say?" They said this to test him, looking for something
to use against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the
ground with his finger. Since they kept up their questioning, he looked up
and said to them "If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him
be the first to cast a stone". Then he kept writing on the ground.
The leaders went away, beginning with the
eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Jesus said to her
"Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? "No one, sir", she replied.
"Neither do I condemn you", said Jesus. "Go and don't sin
any more".
Jesus, what did you write on the ground? The
leaders' sins? "If you, O Lord, should write a record of our sins, who could
claim innocence?"

Nowadays, for example, we are conscious of the disproportionate and unruly
growth of many cities, which have become unhealthy to live in, not only because
of pollution caused by toxic emissions but also as a result of urban chaos, poor
transportation, and visual pollution and noise. Many cities are huge,
inefficient structures, excessively wasteful of energy and water.
Neighbourhoods, even those recently built, are congested, chaotic and lacking in
sufficient green space. We were not

During this time the people told Aaron to make them a god out of gold.
Aaron made a golden calf and the people worshipped it.

I will punish them, but of you I will make a great nation."
Moses pleaded with God not to punish the people.

Lord for help.
He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love,

He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness,
for he shatters the iron bars of prisons. Some people were sick on account of their

unable to eat, and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need.He healed them and saved them from the grave.
Let them thank the Lord for his love,

In tropical and subtropical seas, we find coral
reefs comparable to the great forests on dry land, for they shelter
approximately a million species, including fish, crabs, molluscs, sponges and
algae. Many of the world's coral reefs are already barren or in a state of
constant decline. "Who turned the
wonderworld of the seas into underwater cemeteries bereft of colour and life?" This
phenomenon is due largely to pollution which reaches the sea as the result of
deforestation, agricultural monocultures, industrial waste and destructive
fishing methods, especially those using cyanide and dynamite. It is aggravated
by the rise in temperature of the oceans. All of this helps us to see that every
intervention in nature can have consequences which are not immediately evident,
and that certain ways of exploiting resources prove costly in terms of
degradation which ultimately reaches
the ocean bed itself.

Ephesians
2.19-22: In God's Church you are not foreigners. You
are citizens. You are part of a building that has the
apostles and prophets
for its base. Christ Jesus himself is the foundation stone.
You are being built into a house where God
lives
Jesus, be the foundation stone
of my life

Matthew
6.25-34: Jesus said to the crowds that life is about more than food and clothing.
Pointing to some birds flying around, Jesus said:
Look at the birds. They don't sow or reap,
yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
And you are more precious than the birds. Pointing to flowers in the field Jesus said:
How beautiful are the flowers.
They are more beautiful than King Solomon's clothing. If God cares so much about the life of flowers
won't he care even more about human life? So, don't spend your day worrying about
what you are going to eat and drink and wear. Put God first in your life, God and a right
way of life,
then God will look after your physical needs. Don't waste your energy worrying about
tomorrow.
Live life one day at a time.
Heavenly Father, thank you for
caring for
the birds and flowers....and me!

Reflection: Last Saturday morning as I walked past the corner of Tung Kun and Shanghai Streets in Yau Ma Tei, I noticed 2 pigeons building a nest on top of an air conditioner which was completely under the cover of part of a building. CLEVER BIRDS! Even cleverer, the Divine Programmer of our amazing world!
