Tues April 4

Yesterday morning I attended a meeting to do with trying to stop drug trafficking to and into HK .... then spent the rest of the day at the desk on jobs for prisoners. I hope to visit a prison this afternoon. Tomorrow is a public holiday in HK for the Ching Ming Festival ... and I hope to visit another prison tomorrow.

Laudato Si:
54. It is remarkable how weak international political responses have been. The failure of global summits on the environment make it plain that our politics are subject to technology and finance. There are too many special interests, and economic interests easily end up trumping the common good and manipulating information so that their own plans will not be affected. The Aparecida Document urges that "the interests of economic groups which irrationally demolish sources of life should not prevail in dealing with natural resources". The alliance between the economy and technology ends up sidelining anything unrelated to its immediate interests. Consequently the most one can expect is superficial rhetoric, sporadic acts of philanthropy and perfunctory expressions of concern for the environment, whereas any genuine attempt by groups within society to introduce change is viewed as a nuisance based on romantic illusions or an obstacle to be circumvented.

c.f. readings for Tues of Holy Week.

Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord said to me: "I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth"
Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me. Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you
 Recording

Mark 14.66-72: Peter went to the place where the religious leaders had Jesus on trial. A young woman in the courtyard of the place  said to him "You were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth". Peter replied "I don't know what you're talking about". Peter went to the gateway of the place, where the woman saw him again and said to people around her "This man is one of them".
Peter denied it. Not long after this a group of people said to Peter "You are his friend. We can tell by your Galilean accent".
Then Peter even more strongly replied "I do not know the man". At that very moment, a rooster crowed. Peter remembered Jesus' words "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". Peter then wept loudly

Jesus, please help me not to deny you. Give me courage to say "I am a Christian"

Listen

Luke 22.63-65: The men who were guarding Jesus mocked him and beat him. They blindfolded him. "Since you are a prophet", they said, "tell us who hit you just then". And they continued heaping insults on him.
Jesus, please stop me from making offensive fun of other people

 Recording

Luke 22.66 - 23.12: At daybreak there was a meeting of the religious leaders. Jesus was brought before them. They asked him "Are you the Son of God?". He replied "Yes". They said "We have heard his blasphemy from his own lips". They took him to the Roman governor, Pilate, and made many false accusations against him. Pilate said "I find no case against him". Jesus was then taken to King Herod who made fun of him and sent him back to Pilate.
Jesus, on trial before the leaders, before Herod and before Pilate, please help all prisoners who are on trial today

Reflection on the above readings: When someone makes fun of us, we react, internally if not externally. Being made fun of is not a pleasant experience. And most of us have to admit to having made fun of others. But human hurt feelings pale into insignificance when compared with what Jesus must have felt. The Creator of the Universe being ridiculed by creatures. A loving and kind parent being ridiculed by a son or daughter .... only a faint image of what happened 2,000 years ago this week.

Monday April 3

Yesterday morning I had 8.30 Chinese Mass at St Paul's Parish in Yau Ma Tei, then at the Dr Jesus Centre a noon English Mass for women staying at MercyHK shelters in Jordan. At the English Mass I used this beautiful old song for Palm Sunday

Laudato Si:
53. These situations have caused sister earth, along with all the abandoned of our world, to cry out, pleading that we take another course. Never have we so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in the last two hundred years. Yet we are called to be instruments of God our Father, so that our planet might be what he desired when he created it and correspond with his plan for peace, beauty and fullness. The problem is that we still lack the culture needed to confront this crisis. We lack leadership capable of striking out on new paths and meeting the needs of the present with concern for all and without prejudice towards coming generations. The establishment of a legal framework which can set clear boundaries and ensure the protection of ecosystems has become indispensable; otherwise, the new power structures based on the techno-economic paradigm may overwhelm not only our politics but also freedom and justice.

c.f. Monday of Holy Week.
Isaiah 42: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison.
Jesus, Servant of the Father, you are the Saviour of the world.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Jesus, may we pray this psalm in time of trial, just as you did
Recording

Mark 14.53-65: The men who arrested Jesus took him to a meeting of the religious leaders. The leaders wanted to condemn Jesus to death, even if they had to use false evidence. Jesus remained silent before their accusations. Then the main leader challenged Jesus: "Are you the Saviour, the Son of God?" Jesus replied "I am". The leader then called out "We have heard him claim to be of Divine origin. This is blasphemy". The rest of the leaders shouted "He should die". Then they spat in Jesus' face and hit him with their fists
Jesus, thank you for submitting yourself to insult and spittle for the salvation of the world

Listen

John 12.1-8: Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, for a dinner at the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. Mary put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet. Then she wiped his feet with her hair. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to betray Jesus, said "Why wasn't this ointment sold and the money given to the poor?" He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the moneybag and would steal from it. Jesus replied "Leave her alone. She is anticipating and honoring my burial. Besides, the poor will always be with you. But I will soon be gone".
Jesus, may we "anoint your feet" by serving the poor

Recording

Reflection on the above readings: We can wash Jesus' feet ... by serving him in the poor ... by real service of the real poor, not insincere lip-service like that of Judas

PALM SUNDAY

Another media report about 64 year old Canadian grandmother in prison in HK on drug trafficking charge. Original video report by W5 (Canada's Sixty Minutes) here has now had 1.3m views (part of this report was filmed at the Dr Jesus Centre in HK).

I read every word of this excellent article: Netanyahu is leading a coup against his own country

Laudato Si:
52. The foreign debt of poor countries has become a way of controlling them, yet this is not the case where ecological debt is concerned. In different ways, developing countries, where the most important reserves of the biosphere are found, continue to fuel the development of richer countries at the cost of their own present and future. The land of the southern poor is rich and mostly unpolluted, yet access to ownership of goods and resources for meeting vital needs is inhibited by a system of commercial relations and ownership which is structurally perverse. The developed countries ought to help pay this debt by significantly limiting their consumption of non-renewable energy and by assisting poorer countries to support policies and programmes of sustainable development. The poorest areas and countries are less capable of adopting new models for reducing environmental impact because they lack the wherewithal to develop the necessary processes and to cover their costs. We must continue to be aware that, regarding climate change, there are differentiated responsibilities. As the United States bishops have said, greater attention must be given to "the needs of the poor, the weak and the vulnerable, in a debate often dominated by more powerful interests". We need to strengthen the conviction that we are one single human family. There are no frontiers or barriers, political or social, behind which we can hide, still less is there room for the globalization of indifference.

c.f. readings for Palm Sunday

Isaiah 50: The Lord has opened my ear to hear his message. The Lord has given me words to proclaim his message. For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard. I did not protect my face from insult and spittle. I set my face like flint. The Lord will help me.
Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt  me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe.

Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you.
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

Philippians 2.6-11: O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. Though you were God in state divine you did not cling to what you were. No, you shed your glory's shine so as to live just like a slave. O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. You came on earth in human form and you shared our troubled life. A humbler man there never was, even in death obedient. Yes, Lord, death upon a cross, yes, upon a cross.

Therefore are you raised on high and you have the name of names. At that name should bend the knee and tongue confess:  Jesus Christ is LORD. And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. To the glory of God the Father

Luke 19.28-40When Jesus came near to Jerusalem, he sent two disciples to a nearby village to get a donkey colt which no one had ever ridden. Jesus sat on the colt and began the descent from the Mount of Olives down the hill to Jerusalem. The disciples spread their clothes on the road, and joyfully praised God for all the miracles they had seen. They cried out "Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" Some religious leaders told Jesus to stop the disciples from calling out. Jesus replied "If these keep silence, the stones will cry out"
Jesus, you who came in the name of the Lord, we praise and love you

Sat April 1

I spent most of yesterday at the desk .... on many jobs for prisoners. Jobs like the letter below:

Letter in Chinese from a HK woman in prison for drug trafficking. Her story is a warning to others not to make the same mistake: Here (March 18)

Laudato Si:
51. Inequity affects not only individuals but entire countries; it compels us to consider an ethics of international relations. A true "ecological debt" exists, particularly between the global north and south, connected to commercial imbalances with effects on the environment, and the disproportionate use of natural resources by certain countries over long periods of time. The export of raw materials to satisfy markets in the industrialized north has caused harm locally, as for example in mercury pollution in gold mining or sulphur dioxide pollution in copper mining. There is a pressing need to calculate the use of environmental space throughout the world for depositing gas residues which have been accumulating for two centuries and have created a situation which currently affects all the countries of the world. The warming caused by huge consumption on the part of some rich countries has repercussions on the poorest areas of the world, especially Africa, where a rise in temperature, together with drought, has proved devastating for farming. There is also the damage caused by the export of solid waste and toxic liquids to developing countries, and by the pollution produced by companies which operate in less developed countries in ways they could never do at home, in the countries in which they raise their capital: "We note that often the businesses which operate this way are multinationals. They do here what they would never do in developed countries or the so-called first world. Generally, after ceasing their activity and withdrawing, they leave behind great human and environmental liabilities such as unemployment, abandoned towns, the depletion of natural reserves, deforestation, the impoverishment of agriculture and local stock breeding, open pits, riven hills, polluted rivers and a handful of social works which are no longer sustainable".

Fri March 31

Yesterday I attended a lunch time meeting to discuss the work of ALPHA. I am hoping there can soon be some ALPHA groups in our area.

Laudato Si:
50. Instead of resolving the problems of the poor and thinking of how the world can be different, some can only propose a reduction in the birth rate. At times, developing countries face forms of international pressure which make economic assistance contingent on certain policies of "reproductive health". Yet "while it is true that an unequal distribution of the population and of available resources creates obstacles to development and a sustainable use of the environment, it must nonetheless be recognized that demographic growth is fully compatible with an integral and shared development". To blame population growth instead of extreme and selective consumerism on the part of some, is one way of refusing to face the issues. It is an attempt to legitimize the present model of distribution, where a minority believes that it has the right to consume in a way which can never be universalized, since the planet could not even contain the waste products of such consumption. Besides, we know that approximately a third of all food produced is discarded, and "whenever food is thrown out it is as if it were stolen from the table of the poor".  Still, attention needs to be paid to imbalances in population density, on both national and global levels, since a rise in consumption would lead to complex regional situations, as a result of the interplay between problems linked to environmental pollution, transport, waste treatment, loss of resources and quality of life.

Laudato Si:
49. It needs to be said that, generally speaking, there is little in the way of clear awareness of problems which especially affect the excluded. Yet they are the majority of the planet's population, billions of people. These days, they are mentioned in international political and economic discussions, but one often has the impression that their problems are brought up as an afterthought, a question which gets added almost out of duty or in a tangential way, if not treated merely as collateral damage. Indeed, when all is said and done, they frequently remain at the bottom of the pile. This is due partly to the fact that many professionals, opinion makers, communications media and centres of power, being located in affluent urban areas, are far removed from the poor, with little direct contact with their problems. They live and reason from the comfortable position of a high level of development and a quality of life well beyond the reach of the majority of the world's population. This lack of physical contact and encounter, encouraged at times by the disintegration of our cities, can lead to a numbing of conscience and to tendentious analyses which neglect parts of reality. At times this attitude exists side by side with a "green" rhetoric. Today, however, we have to realize that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.

Genesis 17: God appeared to Abraham and said to him "I will make an everlasting covenant with you and your descendants. As a sign of this covenant, all your males must be circumcised. Baby boys must be circumcised when they are eight days old. Also, Sarah your wife, even though she is old, will bear you a son. You will name him Isaac."

Psalm 105: Give thanks to the Lord, make known his deeds among all the peoples. O sing to him, sing his praise. Tell all his wonderful works. Be proud of his holy name. Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice. Consider the Lord and his strength. Constantly seek his face. Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the past, how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now.
Dear God, please help me understand how you have been loving and protecting me since the beginning of my life

John 8: Jesus said to the people "If God were your father, you would love me, since I have come from God and I speak the truth. You avoid the truth, because your father is the father of lies, the Devil. Abraham rejoiced at the thought of my coming. He saw it in the future and was glad". The people said "You are not yet 50 years old. How could you have seen Abraham?" Jesus replied "I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I Am". The people then picked up stones to throw at Jesus for claiming to be God. But Jesus safely left the Temple
Jesus, you who existed as God the Son from all eternity, please increase my love for the truth, and help me avoid lies

Wed March 29

Yesterday after the monthly O.M.I. meeting finished at midday at St Paul's retreat centre in Sheung Shui, Fr Jun and I skipped lunch and went to nearby Lo Wu women's prison for a few hours. A very worthwhile visit. Fr me I was happy to meet a number of people soon to go back to their own countries ... including one lady from Africa who has spent 15 years and 6 months in prison after losing her not guilty plea for a drug trafficking charge.

Laudato Si:
48. The human environment and the natural environment deteriorate together; we cannot adequately combat environmental degradation unless we attend to causes related to human and social degradation. In fact, the deterioration of the environment and of society affects the most vulnerable people on the planet: "Both everyday experience and scientific research show that the gravest effects of all attacks on the environment are suffered by the poorest".  For example, the depletion of fishing reserves especially hurts small fishing communities without the means to replace those resources; water pollution particularly affects the poor who cannot buy bottled water; and rises in the sea level mainly affect impoverished coastal populations who have nowhere else to go. The impact of present imbalances is also seen in the premature death of many of the poor, in conflicts sparked by the shortage of resources, and in any number of other problems which are insufficiently represented on global agendas.

Daniel 2-3: The king of Babylon had a dream which none of his wise men could interpret. God enabled Daniel to understand the dream. The king then promoted Daniel and his friends to important jobs. Some time after this, the king built a golden statue and everyone was commanded to adore it. The Jewish exiles, including Daniel and his friends, refused to adore the statue. Daniel and his friends were condemned to be burnt to death in a big furnace. But God protected the four young men and they walked around unhurt in the flames. They praised God for his wonderful protection and called on all creatures to adore the one true God. When the king saw this miracle take place he cancelled the law for Jews to be killed.
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. Let everyone praise the Lord for his love is everlasting

My recording of this reading

Daniel 3.52-56:

To you glory and praise for evermore.
You are blest, Lord God of our fathers.
To you glory and praise for evermore.
Blest your glorious holy name.
To you glory and praise for evermore.
You are blest in the temple of your glory.
To you glory and praise for evermore.
You are blest on the throne of your kingdom.
To you glory and praise for evermore.
You are blest who gaze into the depths.
To you glory and praise for evermore.
You are blest in the firmament of heaven.
To you glory and praise for evermore.

John 8.31-42:

To the Jews who believed in him Jesus said:
If you make my word your home
you will indeed be my disciples,
you will learn the truth
and the truth will make you free.
They answered, We are descended from Abraham and we have never been the slaves of anyone; what do you mean, You will be made free? Jesus replied:
I tell you most solemnly,
everyone who commits sin is a slave.
Now the slaves place in the house is not assured,
but the sons place is assured.
So if the Son makes you free,
you will be free indeed.
I know that you are descended from Abraham;
but in spite of that you want to kill me
because nothing I say has penetrated into you.
What I, for my part, speak of
is what I have seen with my Father;
but you, you put into action
the lessons learnt from your father.
They repeated, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said to them:
If you were Abrahams children,
you would do as Abraham did.
As it is, you want to kill me
when I tell you the truth
as I have learnt it from God;
that is not what Abraham did.
What you are doing is what your father does.
We were not born of prostitution, they went on we have one father: God. Jesus answered:
If God were your father, you would love me,
since I have come here from God;
yes, I have come from him;
not that I came because I chose,
no, I was sent, and by him.
