Laudato
Si:75.
A spirituality which forgets God as all-powerful and Creator is not acceptable.
That is how we end up worshipping earthly powers, or ourselves usurping the
place of God, even to the point of claiming an unlimited right to trample his
creation underfoot. The best way to
restore men and women to their rightful place, putting an end to their claim to
absolute dominion over the earth, is to speak once more of the figure of a
Father who creates and who alone owns the world. Otherwise, human beings
will always try to impose their own laws and interests on reality.

For today's Feast of St. Mark
Mark
14.48-52: Jesus said to them
"Am I a robber that you needed to capture me with swords and clubs? Day
after day I was openly teaching in the Temple". All the apostles then
deserted him and ran away. A
young man who followed
Jesus had nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him, but he left the
cloth in their hands and ran away naked.
My
recording of this reading

Acts
15.36-40: Some time after
this, Paul said to Barnabas "Let's revisit the towns where we preached the
word of the Lord". Barnabas suggested taking John
Mark with them, but
Paul opposed this, since John Mark had deserted them on the previous trip when
the situation became dangerous. After a violent argument, Paul and Barnabas
split up. Barnabas went with John Mark to Cyprus. Silas joined Paul for his next
journey.

Colossians
4.10: Aristarchus, who
is here in prison with me, sends his greetings, and so does Mark,
the cousin of Barnabas. If he comes to you give him a warm welcome.

Peter 5.13: Your
sister in Babylon sends you greetings; so does my son Mark

Reflection on the above readings: Mark in his youth was good at running ... running away from danger (Gospel and Acts, above). But his feet were eventually right in the danger zone that was Rome. We can also note that not all scholars agree that "Mark" in the above 4 readings is the same person. See Mark the Evangelist

Guest pastor was invited to speak at church for 30
minutes. He went on for 60 minutes. Moderator many times signalled to him to
stop but he ignored the moderator. People in the church were restless, but too
polite to get up and leave. After 90 mins (!) the moderator was so frustrated
and angry that he threw a heavy hymn book at the speaker. But it missed the
speaker ....who just kept on babbling ....and hit a woman in the front row
...who called out to the moderator "hit me again ... I can still hear
him"! (A Billy Graham joke)

Sunday Examiner: Sharing
Easter eggs along Temple Street
In the middle of last week when I thought about the Diocesan walkathon to be held yesterday, I had many concerns: the forecast of wet weather, heavy police monitoring, no masks allowed (even if you are sick) etc. Well, as they say, 90% of our fears don't come true. In fact yesterday 100% did not come true! The weather was fine (Thank you Jesus!), and I did not see even one policeman or policewoman ...even though some 10,000 people (my estimate) took part .... and hundreds of people wore masks for health protection. Nothing went wrong! Everything went right! A beautiful, peaceful, happy experience .... people of all ages, many primary and secondary students, hundreds of families, many elderly people, many sisters and priests, many parish groups.

74. The experience of the Babylonian
captivity provoked a spiritual crisis which led to deeper faith in God. Now his
creative omnipotence was given pride of place in order to exhort the people to
regain their hope in the midst of their wretched predicament. Centuries later,
in another age of trial and persecution, when the Roman Empire was seeking to
impose absolute dominion, the faithful would once again find consolation and
hope in a growing trust in the all-powerful God: "Great and wonderful are
your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways!" The
God who created the universe out of nothing can also intervene in this world and
overcome every form of evil. Injustice is not invincible.

Psalm
116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of
my appeal.
He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the
snares of death.
I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good.
I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to
me?
The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the
death of his faithful.
Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.

Matthew
10.1-16: Many men followed Jesus as "fishers of
men", as "disciples".
Jesus chose 12 of them and called them "apostles":
Peter and his
brother Andrew; Zebedees' sons James
and John;
Philip and Bartholomew;
Thomas and Matthew;
James son of
Alphaeus; Thaddaeus,
Simon and Judas.
Jesus sent them to prepare his way by visiting
the places he would go.
He gave them power to cast out evil spirits and to heal all kinds of
sicknesses.
He said to them:
Proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is near.
Cure the sick.
Raise the dead. Cleanse lepers. Cast out devils.
Jesus, please help all

The writings of the prophets invite us
to find renewed strength in times of trial by contemplating the all-powerful God
who created the universe. Yet God's infinite power does not lead us to
flee his fatherly tenderness, because in him affection and strength are joined.
Indeed, all sound spirituality entails both welcoming divine love and adoration,
confident in the Lord because of his infinite power. In the Bible, the God who
liberates and saves is the same God who created the universe, and these two
divine ways of acting are intimately and inseparably connected: "Ah Lord
God! It is you who made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by
your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you… You brought your people
Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders". "The Lord is
the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or
grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and
strengthens the powerless".

Luke
24.13-35: That
same day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the
village of Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had
happened, Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not
recognize him. When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said
"About Jesus of Nazareth, and how our leaders had him crucified. And
how some women in our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he
was alive". Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his
suffering and resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During
the meal, he blessed some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized
him. But he immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other
"Did not our hearts burn
within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?"
Straight away they returned to Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them
"Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen". Then they told their story of
what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus at the breaking
of bread
Jesus, please make my heart burn within me as I read the Bible

71.
Although "the wickedness of man was great in the earth"” and the
Lord "was sorry that he had made man on the earth", nonetheless,
through Noah, who remained innocent and just, God decided to open a path of
salvation. In this way he gave humanity the chance of a new beginning. All
it takes is one good person to restore hope! The biblical tradition
clearly shows that this renewal entails
recovering and respecting the rhythms inscribed in nature by the hand of the
Creator. We see this, for example, in the law of the Sabbath. On the
seventh day, God rested from all his work. He commanded Israel to set aside each
seventh day as a day of rest, a Sabbath.
Similarly, every seven years, a sabbatical year was set aside for Israel, a
complete rest for the land, when sowing was forbidden and one reaped only what
was necessary to live on and to feed one's household. Finally, after seven weeks
of years, which is to say forty-nine years, the Jubilee was celebrated as a year
of general forgiveness and "liberty throughout the land for all its
inhabitants". This law came about as an attempt to ensure balance and
fairness in their relationships with others and with the land on which they
lived and worked. At the same time, it was an acknowledgment that the gift of
the earth with its fruits belongs to everyone. Those who tilled and kept the
land were obliged to share its fruits, especially with the poor, with widows,
orphans and foreigners in their midst: "When you reap the harvest of your
land, you shall not reap your field to its very border, neither shall you gather
the gleanings after the harvest. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare,
neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave
them for the poor and for the sojourner"

In the story of Cain and Abel, we see how envy led Cain to commit the ultimate
injustice against his brother, which in turn ruptured the relationship between
Cain and God, and between Cain and the earth from which he was banished. This is
seen clearly in the dramatic exchange between God and Cain. God asks: "Where
is Abel your brother?" Cain answers that he does not know, and God
persists: "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying
to me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the ground". Disregard
for the duty to cultivate and maintain a proper relationship with my neighbour,
for whose care and custody I am responsible, ruins my relationship with my own
self, with others, with God and with the earth. When all these relationships are
neglected, when justice no longer dwells in the land, the Bible tells us that
life itself is endangered. We see this in the story of Noah, where God threatens
to do away with humanity because of its constant failure to fulfil the
requirements of justice and peace: "I have determined to make an end of all
flesh; for the earth is filled with violence through them". These ancient
stories, full of symbolism, bear witness to a conviction which we today share,
that everything is interconnected, and
that genuine care for our own lives and our relationships with nature is
inseparable from fraternity, justice and faithfulness to others.

a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years
came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing.
The woman had said to herself
"If I can even touch his clothing, I will be healed". Jesus knew what she was doing and said to her
"My daughter, your faith has healed you".
Instantly she was healed. When Jesus arrived at the official's house
he saw a crowd of people crying loudly. Jesus said to them "Get out of the house.
The little girl is asleep, not dead". The crowd laughed at
Jesus.
After the crowd had gone outside, Jesus went inside.
He took the little girl by the hand, and she stood up.
News of what had happened spread all round the district.

Together with our obligation to use the earth's goods responsibly, we are called
to recognize that other living beings have a value of their own in God's eyes:
"by their mere existence they bless him and give him glory",[ and
indeed, "the Lord rejoices in all his works". By virtue of our unique
dignity and our gift of intelligence, we are called to respect creation and its
inherent laws, for "the Lord by wisdom founded the earth". In our
time, the Church does not simply state that other creatures are completely
subordinated to the good of human beings, as if they have no worth in themselves
and can be treated as we wish. The German bishops have taught that, where other
creatures are concerned, "we can speak of the priority of being over
that of being useful". The
Catechism clearly and forcefully criticizes a distorted anthropocentrism: "Each
creature possesses its own particular goodness and perfection… Each of the
various creatures, willed in its own being, reflects in its own way a ray of
God's infinite wisdom and goodness. Man
must therefore respect the particular goodness of every creature, to
avoid any disordered use of things".

The
Book Blog:
readings + recordings
Readings are from
Simple Bible
Leviticus 11-12: The people were told which animals were
"clean"
and which were "unclean".
Only "clean" animals were allowed to be eaten.
Regulations were also made for when a woman had a baby:
a lamb or two turtledoves or two young pigeons
were to be offered as a prayer for mother and baby.
Dear God, please give me a
clean heart
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
111: I will thank the Lord with all my heart.
Great are the works of the Lord,
to be pondered by all who love him. His goodness stands firm for ever.
The Lord is compassion and love. His precepts are for all peoples and all
times.
He is to be honored by all nations. To love and honor the Lord
is the beginning of wisdom.
Dear Lord, please help me to
love and honor you every day

Ephesians
6.10-17: To resist the Devil's tactics, put on God's
armor:
- the belt of truth
- the breastplate of integrity
- the shoes of eagerness to spread
the Good News of peace
- the shield of faith
- the helmet of salvation
- the sword of God's word
Jesus, help me put on these six pieces
of armor
Listen
Matthew
9.14-17: One day John the Baptist's friends asked Jesus
"How come we and the religious leaders fast, but your friends
don't?" Jesus replied
"Fasting is a good thing, and after I have left this world
my friends will fast. But remember that multiplying external prayers
and fasts
without a change of heart is useless. Out of date religious structures need a
drastic overhaul,
not just external plastic surgery."
Jesus, please help me practise
a bit of fasting,
especially each Friday, the day you died
Listen
Reflection: Interesting .... Paul's armor (above) does not include fasting (although we know he practised fasting)
