Tues May 9

Hello from St Paul's Retreat House in Sheung Shui where I am attending the annual O.M.I. retreat. A photo of the main gate here gives an idea of the beautiful grounds surrounding the main building ...where I look out my 1/F window to trees and gardens and lawns ... lovely! More photos here

Laudato Si:
89. The created things of this world are not free of ownership: "For they are yours, O Lord, who love the living". This is the basis of our conviction that, as part of the universe, called into being by one Father, all of us are linked by unseen bonds and together form a kind of universal family, a sublime communion which fills us with a sacred, affectionate and humble respect. Here I would reiterate that "God has joined us so closely to the world around us that we can feel the desertification of the soil almost as a physical ailment, and the extinction of a species as a painful disfigurement"

Numbers 13-14: Moses sent some men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan. After some weeks the men returned and reported that the land was fertile and rich. But most of the men also said that the towns of Canaan were too well fortified for the Israelites to capture. They said that the Canaanites were too strong for the Israelites. Only Caleb and Joshua had the trust in God and courage to do battle with the Canaanites. Just as the rest of the people were thinking of stoning Joshua and Caleb, the glory of God appeared at the Sacred Tent. God then said that all the men aged twenty and over who had refused to go to Canaan would indeed never see Canaan: they would keep on traveling in the desert until they died.
Canaan would not be entered by the Israelites until all the men aged twenty and over had died, excepting Caleb and Joshua. The reconnoiter men who inspired the rebellion were all struck dead that day

Dear God, please give me more courage to face the trials of life, and don't let me ever discourage other people

Psalm 128:
O blessed are those who love the Lord and walk in his ways. By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper: your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house;
your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life. May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem! On Israel, peace!

Dear Lord, may all married people live to see their children's children

Colossians 1.24 - 2.2: As I sit in my prison, I am at peace in my suffering, offering up my suffering to Christ for the sake of his body, the Church. God chose me to reveal to you his sacred message: Christ, your hope of glory,  is among you. My aim is to bind you together in love, and to keep you growing in your knowledge of God's plan for your lives
"Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, With cords that cannot be broken,
Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, Bind us together in Love"

Matthew 13.53-58:
One day Jesus went to Nazareth, his home town. In the prayer hall there he taught the local people. But the local people would not accept him.  They said "Where did he get such wisdom and miraculous power? He is just a carpenter's son. His mother is that woman called Mary. His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon and Jude. His sisters are here, too. He's nobody special." Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own country and his own house". And he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Jesus, please give me more faith in you .... and don't let me reject people

Laudato Si:
88. The bishops of Brazil have pointed out that nature as a whole not only manifests God but is also a locus of his presence. The Spirit of life dwells in every living creature and calls us to enter into relationship with him. Discovering this presence leads us to cultivate the "ecological virtues". This is not to forget that there is an infinite distance between God and the things of this world, which do not possess his fullness. Otherwise, we would not be doing the creatures themselves any good either, for we would be failing to acknowledge their right and proper place. We would end up unduly demanding of them something which they, in their smallness, cannot give us.

Numbers 12: Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, started complaining against Moses.
So God called Moses, Aaron and Miriam to the Sacred Tent. God said: "Moses is at home in my house
and I speak with him face to face. You were wrong to speak against my servant Moses". When God finished speaking Miriam had become a leper. Moses pleaded with God for Miriam. Miriam was exiled from the camp for seven days and then the leprosy left her

Dear God, please help me not to complain so much about other people

Psalm 127: If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor. If the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil. Success comes not from earlier rising or from going later to rest, but from the Lord's blessing. Success is from the Lord who blesses the womb of his beloved while she sleeps. Truly, children are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb.
Lord, many people these days don't want children. Please help such people understand that children are a blessing

Colossians 1.15-20Christ is the image of the unseen God. In him were created all things. All things were created through him and for him. Before anything was created, he existed. He holds all things in unity. The Church is his body. He is its head. God wants all things to be reconciled through him who brought peace by his death on the Cross

Matthew 13: Jesus said to the people: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed. It's the smallest of all seeds. But it becomes a big bush, then a big tree that the birds live in. The kingdom of heaven is like yeast which leavens flour. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure in a field. Someone finds it, then sells all they have to buy the field. The kingdom of heaven is like a fishing net that catches all sorts of fish. Good fish are put in a basket. Useless fish are thrown away. So at the end of time, bad people will be thrown into hell.
Jesus, may your kingdom come, your will be done

Laudato Si:
87. When we can see God reflected in all that exists, our hearts are moved to praise the Lord for all his creatures and to worship him in union with them. This sentiment finds magnificent expression in the hymn of Saint Francis of Assisi:

Praised be you, my Lord, with all your creatures,
especially Sir Brother Sun,
who is the day and through whom you give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour;
and bears a likeness of you, Most High.
Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful.
Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Wind,
and through the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather
through whom you give sustenance to your creatures.
Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Water,
who is very useful and humble and precious and chaste.
Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Fire,
through whom you light the night,
and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong”.[64]

c.f. readings for Easter 5

Acts 6.1-7: About this time as the number of disciples kept growing, the twelve apostles decided to give other men the job of daily food distribution. The apostles said to the whole group of believers  "It is not right for us to neglect the service of the word. Therefore you should choose seven men of good reputation, filled with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom. We give them the food  distribution job, so that we can devote ourselves to prayer and the service of the word". The whole assembly approved of this idea. They chose seven men and presented them to the apostles who prayed over them with the laying on of hands. The word of the Lord continued to spread. Even a large number of priests became believers.
Jesus, please bless all deacons. Fill them with the courage and wisdom of the first seven deacons

Psalm 33:
Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.

Lord, we trust in your precious love

1 Peter 2.4-9: Jesus is Mr Livingstone, the living stone rejected by men, but chosen by God. Stay close to him, so that you too may be living stones in the spiritual house of God's church. You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, a people set apart to sing the praises of God who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Jesus, you are the foundation stone of my life. May I build my life on your teaching, your values, your example

John 13.37 - 14.6: At the meal, Peter said to Jesus "I will lay down my life for you". Jesus replied "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times. To all of you I say, there are many rooms in my Father's house. I am going now to prepare a place for you. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me".
Jesus, you are the Way, the Truth and the Life. Please help more and more people follow you to find truth and life

 Reflection on the above readings:

Jesus is the Way: following him is the best way to travel on our journey in this world.
Jesus is the Truth: if we want to know if something or someone is true/truthful, we just need to remember Jesus' words and behaviour about the issue involved.
Jesus is the Life: if we follow him, we will follow the Culture of Life, not the culture of death

Laudato Si:
86. The universe as a whole, in all its manifold relationships, shows forth the inexhaustible riches of God. Saint Thomas Aquinas wisely noted that multiplicity and variety "come from the intention of the first agent" who willed that "what was wanting to one in the representation of the divine goodness might be supplied by another", inasmuch as God's goodness "could not be represented fittingly by any one creature". Hence we need to grasp the variety of things in their multiple relationships. We understand better the importance and meaning of each creature if we contemplate it within the entirety of God's plan. As the Catechism teaches: "God wills the interdependence of creatures. The sun and the moon, the cedar and the little flower, the eagle and the sparrow: the spectacle of their countless diversities and inequalities tells us that no creature is self-sufficient. Creatures exist only in dependence on each other, to complete each other, in the service of each other".

Numbers 11: Some of the Israelites started complaining about not having meat to eat, only manna. So God arranged for quails to land near the camp and be easily caught for food. About this time Moses selected seventy men to help him care for the people. God blessed the seventy men and they began to prophesy. Moses said "I wish the whole people of God could be prophets, and God would give his Spirit to them all".
Dear God, please pour out your Holy Spirit on the whole human family

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Colossians 1.9-14: I pray that you will continue to grow in your Christian life, a life full of good deeds. Never give in when trials come, but bravely, even joyfully, carry your cross each day. Keep on thanking the Father who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins
Father, thank you for letting me be a Christian.

Matthew 13: Jesus told the people another story: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. An enemy came and sowed weeds in the same field. When the good seed sprouted, so did the weeds. The man's servants asked if they should get rid of the weeds. "No", said the man, "you might damage the good seed if you do that. Let them both grow till harvest time. Then burn the weeds." Then Jesus explained his story: "I am the sower. The field is the world. The good seed stands for people of good will. The weeds stand for people of bad will. The enemy is Satan. At the end of the world, the Son of Man will send his angels to sort out the good and the bad people. Bad people will go to hell.  Good people will go to heaven".
Jesus, please protect good people from bad people

Reflection: Good advice for parents/teachers - Evangelization consists mostly of patience and disregard for constraints of time. Faithful to the Lord’s gift, it also bears fruit. An evangelizing community is always concerned with fruit, because the Lord wants her to be fruitful. It cares for the grain and does not grow impatient at the weeds. The sower, when he sees weeds sprouting among the grain does not grumble or overreact. He or she finds a way to let the word take flesh in a particular situation and bear fruits of new life, however imperfect or incomplete these may appear (Pope Francis - Joy of the Gospel - No. 24)

Laudato Si:
85. God has written a precious book, "whose letters are the multitude of created things present in the universe". The Canadian bishops rightly pointed out that no creature is excluded from this manifestation of God: "From panoramic vistas to the tiniest living form, nature is a constant source of wonder and awe. It is also a continuing revelation of the divine". The bishops of Japan, for their part, made a thought-provoking observation: "To sense each creature singing the hymn of its existence is to live joyfully in God's love and hope". This contemplation of creation allows us to discover in each thing a teaching which God wishes to hand on to us, since "for the believer, to contemplate creation is to hear a message, to listen to a paradoxical and silent voice". We can say that "alongside revelation properly so-called, contained in sacred Scripture, there is a divine manifestation in the blaze of the sun and the fall of night”. Paying attention to this manifestation, we learn to see ourselves in relation to all other creatures: "I express myself in expressing the world; in my effort to decipher the sacredness of the world, I explore my own"

Matthew 13.1-23A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will
are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other listen to the call of greed and pleasure are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.

Jesus, please help me be good seed!

Thu May 4

Today is the 104th anniversary of the 1919 May 4 Movement which explains why China's emerging leaders turned to Marxism after China was treated so shamefully at the Treaty of Marseilles

Yesterday morning in the mortuary of North District Hospital,  Eddie, Lucia and I joined a Salvation Army welfare officer and a funeral director (and no one else) for a very simple funeral service for a street sleeper who died back in February. Welfare officer unable to locate family. This is the 6th special funeral MercyHK has sponsored over the past year .... one of the works of mercy, "burying the dead". May this man's prayers in Heaven help us all!

Friday May 26, a public holiday in HK for Buddha's Birthday, everyone welcome to join me for a hike to Big Wave Bay on HK Island .... leaving from Jordan MTR (Exit A down inside the station) at 9am  ... then MTR to Chai Wan ...then walk up through cemetery ... then down to BWB. Returning the same way. Much the same as previous hike on May 17 last year (...except not going to Shek O this time)

Laudato Si:
84. Our insistence that each human being is an image of God should not make us overlook the fact that each creature has its own purpose. None is superfluous. The entire material universe speaks of God's love, his boundless affection for us. Soil, water, mountains: everything is, as it were, a caress of God. The history of our friendship with God is always linked to particular places which take on an intensely personal meaning; we all remember places, and revisiting those memories does us much good. Anyone who has grown up in the hills or used to sit by the spring to drink, or played outdoors in the neighbourhood square; going back to these places is a chance to recover something of their true selves.

Numbers 9: Whenever the Israelites pitched camp the Cloud of God's presence covered the Sacred Tent. From nightfall until morning, the Cloud took the appearance of fire. Whenever the Cloud lifted above the Tent, the Israelites broke camp. Wherever the Cloud stopped, there the Israelites pitched camp. Sometimes the Cloud stayed in one place for one day, sometimes for a month, sometimes a year. However long the Cloud stayed above the Tent the Israelites remained in camp. In this way they pitched camp and broke camp
at the Lord's command.

The Cloud
in Christian tradition is understood to be God the Holy Spirit, so we can pray:
Dear Holy Spirit, please lead me and guide me just as you guided the Israelites through the desert

Psalm 124: "If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song.  If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us. Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth. Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

Matthew 12.46-50: One day when Jesus was speaking to a crowd of people inside a house, his mother and brothers arrived at the house. Then holding out his hand towards his disciples he said "Here are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven, that person is my brother and sister and mother."

My day yesterday was spent at "18C" .... the men's prison on Hei Ling Chau Island. I personally shook hands and chatted with almost all of the 200 inmates ....and left hundreds of reading material items for them. My trip from 18C to the ferry took me past the cemetery where dozens of lepers are buried ...HLC once having been a leprosy centre. Laudato Si:
83. The ultimate destiny of the universe is in the fullness of God, which has already been attained by the risen Christ, the measure of the maturity of all things. Here we can add yet another argument for rejecting every tyrannical and irresponsible domination of human beings over other creatures. The ultimate purpose of other creatures is not to be found in us. Rather, all creatures are moving forward with us and through us towards a common point of arrival, which is God, in that transcendent fullness where the risen Christ embraces and illumines all things. Human beings, endowed with intelligence and love, and drawn by the fullness of Christ, are called to lead all creatures back to their Creator.

Psalm 123: To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.
Lord, please protect poor people from being exploited by rich people

Philippians 4.4-9: I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord. Let your tolerance be evident to everyone. If there is anything you need, with prayer and thanksgiving ask God for it. Fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that is worthwhile. Then the God of peace will be with you
Jesus, please fill my mind with good things

John 1.35-51
(for Feast of Sts Philip & James, apostles): John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God.  Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met Philip and said to him "Follow me".  Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth".
Jesus, please help me introduce more people to know and love you

Reflection:  Wikipedia - Philip the Apostle

---------------------------

On the walkway to the ferry pier for Hei Ling Chau yesterday morning, I saw a handicapped beggar without arms ....one of many from Mainland China now back in HK since the border reopened. The sight of him struck me forcefully because of yesterday's Gospel (below)! I did not give him any money but just touched one of his stumps and said a very brief prayer. During the day I often thought of him and prayed for him. Yesterday afternoon I was hoping to see him again when I returned from the ferry pier to Central MTR station ....but he was gone. But then at Central, when I went to use my Octopus card to enter the station, a man in front of me blocked the queue because his card did not seem to be working. Not a case of not working, but difficult to use ...it was HIM! ....not easy for him to use two stumps to hold a card. I couldn't believe it. Thousands of people in the area ...and at the very moment I was there, he was there. He joined me for a few minutes of chat and prayer. I gave him a copy of Dr Jesus ...and prayed that something very, very special might happen to his arms! Not a case of alms for the poor but hands for the poor!!!
