To prepare for Pentecost (May
28) let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day this week:
The seal is
a symbol close to that of anointing. "The Father has set his seal"
on Christ and also seals us
in him. Because this seal indicates
the indelible effect of the anointing with the Holy Spirit in the sacraments
of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, the image of the seal (sphragis)
has been used in some theological traditions to express the indelible
"character" imprinted by these three unrepeatable sacraments. CCC

In this week before Pentecost let's often pray each day: Come
Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in
princes,
in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they
return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are
helped by Jacob's God,
whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven
and earth,
the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives
bread to the hungry,
the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who
gives sight to the blind,
who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who
protects the stranger
and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who
loves the just
but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for

To prepare for Pentecost (May 28), let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day
this week:
Cloud and
light. These two images occur together
in the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. In the theophanies of the Old
Testament, the cloud,
now obscure, now luminous, reveals the living and saving God, while veiling
the transcendence of his glory - with Moses on Mount Sinai, at the tent of
meeting, and during the wandering in the desert, and with Solomon at the
dedication of the Temple. In the Holy Spirit, Christ fulfills these figures.
The Spirit comes upon the Virgin Mary and "overshadows"
her, so that she might conceive and give birth to Jesus. On the mountain of
Transfiguration, the Spirit in the "cloud came
and overshadowed" Jesus, Moses and Elijah, Peter, James and John, and
"a voice came out of the
cloud, saying, 'This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!' Finally, the
cloud took Jesus out of the sight of the disciples. (CCC

On
this day in 1861, in Marseilles, a French bishop died at the age of 78. He had
been born into an aristocratic family which was forced to flee from the French
Revolution. His family went to Italy as refugees. His parents had an unhappy
marriage and eventually divorced. In Italy the young Eugene de Mazenod had an
overpowering experience of the love of Jesus on the Cross. Eugene became a
priest and dedicated himself to serving the poorest parts of French society
such as prisoners and domestic servants. To further his work he joined with
other priests to form a new congregation in the Church. The group came to be
known as the Oblates
of Mary Immaculate.
Today the Oblates have around 3,000 members working for the poor in most
countries of the world. Saint
Eugene de Mazenod, pray for us! ***

HUMAN ROOTS OF THE ECOLOGICAL CRISIS
101.
It would hardly be helpful to describe symptoms without acknowledging the
human origins of the ecological crisis. A certain way of understanding
human life and activity has gone awry, to the serious detriment of the world
around us. Should we not pause and consider this? At this stage, I propose
that we focus on the dominant technocratic paradigm and the place of human
beings and of human action in the world.

Joke
about Heaven for Feast of the Ascension:
Elderly man told by doctor he would depart this life soon. Devoted wife, determined to save her husband, concocts special bran muffins ...which husband has as his only food .... 3 times a day .... and his condition improves ....and he doesn't die ....but lives for another 15 years. But then the couple are involved in a fatal traffic accident and leave this life together. On arrival at the pearly gates they meet Saint Peter, who says "Let me show you around" He points to a mansion and says "That will be your house, located next to the country club." The old man asks, "and how much will that cost?" St Peter replies, "oh there's no charge, it's free, you're in heaven". He adds, "the country club has no fees or costs either" The old man is really happy by now and asks about food. St Peter says, "Although you don't need to eat, we do have the finest buffets with every possible type of food". The old man asks, "Aren't those bad for our health?" St Peter assures him, "You're in heaven now, there is no need to worry about your health." The old man turns to his wife and angrily says to her "If it wasn't for you and your bran muffins, we could have been here 15 years ago!"

100.
The New Testament does not only tell us of the earthly Jesus and his tangible
and loving relationship with the world. It also shows him risen and glorious,
present throughout creation by his universal Lordship: "For in him all
the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to
himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood
of his cross". This leads us to direct our gaze to the end of time, when
the Son will deliver all things to the Father, so that "God may be
everything to every one". Thus, the creatures of this world no longer
appear to us under merely natural guise because the risen One is mysteriously
holding them to himself and directing them towards fullness as their end. The
very flowers of the field and the birds which his human eyes contemplated and
admired are now imbued with his radiant presence.

a census of all the men in the community.
The total number was 624,730.
Moses also gave a ruling concerning inheritance:
"If a man dies without sons,
his inheritance is to pass to his daughters.
If he has no daughter, the inheritance is to go to his brothers.
If he has no brother, it is to go to his father's brothers.
If his father has no brothers,
it is to go to the member of his clan who is his closest relative".
As Moses neared the end of his life, he asked God for someone to succeed him as leader.
God answered:
"Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom the spirit dwells.
Lay your hands on him, then bring him before Eleazar the priest
and the whole community so that everyone will obey him".

99. In the Christian understanding of the
world, the destiny of all creation is bound up with the mystery of Christ,
present from the beginning: "All things have been created though him and
for him". The prologue of the Gospel of John reveals Christ's
creative work as the Divine Word (Logos). But then, unexpectedly, the prologue
goes on to say that this same Word "became flesh". One
Person of the Trinity entered into the created cosmos, throwing in his
lot with it, even to the cross. From the beginning of the world, but
particularly through the incarnation, the mystery of Christ is at work in a
hidden manner in the natural world as a whole, without thereby impinging on
its autonomy.

98. Jesus lived in full harmony with
creation, and others were amazed: "What sort of man is this, that even
the winds and the sea obey him?". His appearance was not that of an
ascetic set apart from the world, nor of an enemy to the pleasant things of
life. Of himself he said: "The Son of Man came eating and drinking and
they say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard!'". He
was far removed from philosophies which despised the body, matter and the
things of the world. Such unhealthy dualisms, nonetheless, left a mark on
certain Christian thinkers in the course of history and disfigured the Gospel.
Jesus worked with his hands, in daily contact with the matter created by God,
to which he gave form by his craftsmanship. It is striking that most of his
life was dedicated to this task in a simple life which awakened no admiration
at all: "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary?". In this way
he sanctified human labour and endowed it with a special significance for our
development. As Saint John Paul II taught, "by enduring the toil of work
in union with Christ crucified for us, man in a way collaborates with the Son
of God for the redemption of humanity".

Yesterday with fellow Voice
for Prisoners team members Jane and Flora I attended a gathering of
about 100 domestic workers at the Indonesian Consulate... to spread the
message of the danger of being tricked to collect or deliver parcels of drugs
... for which around 20 Indonesian women are now in prison in HK
Last night two Correctional Service social workers visited our
MercyHK shelter for single mothers .... where a young mother and her two month
old most gorgeous little girl arrived two days ago on the mother's release
from detention ... beginning a probation year.

Laudato
Si:
97.
The Lord was able to invite others to
be attentive to the beauty that there is in the world because he
himself was in constant touch with nature, lending it an attention full of
fondness and wonder. As he made his way throughout the land, he often stopped
to contemplate the beauty sown by his Father, and invited his disciples to
perceive a divine message in things: "Lift up your eyes, and see how the
fields are already white for harvest". "The kingdom of God is
like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field; it is
the smallest of all seeds, but once it has grown, it is the greatest of plants"

Simple Bible
Numbers 21-22: As the Israelites
continued their journey,
a number of kings did battle with them.
One of these was Og, king of Bashan.
God said to Moses:
"Do not be afraid of him, for I have given him
into your power". Israel then easily defeated Og and occupied his land.
The king of Moab also wanted to attack the Israelites,
but before attacking, he consulted Balaam son of Beor
who was a type of prophet and could see the future.
Several times the king asked Balaam to curse the Israelites,
but each time he blessed them, because this is what God told him to do:
"You are not to curse this people, for they are blessed".
The king then summoned Balaam to his presence.
Balaam began his journey to the king, travelling on a donkey.
God sent an angel with a sword to block Balaam's way.
The donkey could see the angel, so she left the road to make a detour. Balaam hit her and made her return to the road.
On the road the donkey again saw the angel
and just lay down on the road.
Balaam was very angry and hit her with a stick.
Then God made the donkey speak:
"Why did you hit me? Haven't I always been faithful to
you?"
God now opened Balaam's eyes
and he saw the angel with a sword.
Balaam realized that the donkey had saved his life.
The angel then told Balaam to continue his journey
but to say to the king only what God said to say.
Dear
God, please stop people from being cruel to animals

Psalm
138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart.
You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you.
I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love
which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered.
You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you
when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways:
"How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though I walk in the midst of affliction
you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your love, O Lord, is eternal.
Do not abandon us whom you have made.
Lord, when we remember how much
you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day

Colossians
3.18 - 4.1: Wives and
husbands, understand and support
each other. Children, be obedient to your parents.
Parents, treat your children fairly or else they will rebel.
Slaves, be obedient and respectful to your
owners.
Offer up your work to the Lord, our Heavenly Owner. Owners, be just and fair to your slaves.
Remember your Heavenly Owner

Matthew
15.29-31: Jesus went up into the hills near the Lake of
Galilee.
Large crowds came to him bringing
the lame, the crippled, the blind, the dumb and many others. These they put down at Jesus' feet.
Jesus healed them all. The crowds praised the God of Israel
when they saw the dumb speaking, cripples whole again,
the lame walking and the blind able to see.
Jesus,
please give sick people more faith in your healing love
