Laudato Si:
110. The specialization which belongs to technology makes it difficult to see the larger picture. The fragmentation of knowledge proves helpful for concrete applications, and yet it often leads to a loss of appreciation for the whole, for the relationships between things, and for the broader horizon, which then becomes irrelevant. This very fact makes it hard to find adequate ways of solving the more complex problems of today's world, particularly those regarding the environment and the poor; these problems cannot be dealt with from a single perspective or from a single set of interests. A science which would offer solutions to the great issues would necessarily have to take into account the data generated by other fields of knowledge, including philosophy and social ethics; but this is a difficult habit to acquire today. Nor are there genuine ethical horizons to which one can appeal. Life gradually becomes a surrender to situations conditioned by technology, itself viewed as the principal key to the meaning of existence. In the concrete situation confronting us, there are a number of symptoms which point to what is wrong, such as environmental degradation, anxiety, a loss of the purpose of life and of community living. Once more we see that "realities are more important than ideas".

Deuteronomy 10: Moses continued his speech to the people: "And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you? Only this: to love and honor the Lord, to follow all his ways, to serve him with all your heart and all your soul, to keep the commandments and laws of the Lord that for your good I set before you today. Circumcise your heart and be obstinate no longer. The Lord your God is great and good. He it is you must praise, he is your God.
It is he who sees justice done for the orphan and widow, who loves the stranger and gives him food and clothing. You too must love the stranger, for you also were strangers in the land of Egypt."

Dear Lord, please help me love you as I should

My recording of this reading

Psalm 6: Have mercy on me, Lord, I have no strength. My body is racked with pain. Please heal me, Lord. I am exhausted with my groaning. Every night  my pillow is covered  with tears. Lord, please hear my prayer.
Dear Lord, please help people who are in distress of mind or body

2 Thessalonians 3.1-5: Pray that the Lord's message may spread quickly, and be received with honor as it was by yourselves. Pray that we may be protected from the interference of bigoted people. May your hearts focus on the love of God our Father and the fortitude of Christ
Jesus, don't let bigoted people influence me

Matthew 20.1-16: Jesus said to his disciples: The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them the normal daily wage. Then about 9am he went again to the market place. He saw more men without a job.  He got them also to go to his vineyard. He promised to pay them a fair wage. About noon and again about 3pm he once more went to the market place and employed two more groups of men. About 5pm he went one final time and employed one last group of men. At sunset when the men came to be paid, the owner paid everyone a normal day's wage.  This made the dawn group unhappy. They grumbled and said "We have done a full day's work in the heat. Yet we got the same as those who did only one hour's work. This is not fair!" The owner replied "I am paying you what we agreed to. Why do you begrudge my generosity?"
Jesus, please help me not to be jealous of your gifts to others

Laudato Si:
109. The technocratic paradigm also tends to dominate economic and political life. The economy accepts every advance in technology with a view to profit, without concern for its potentially negative impact on human beings. Finance overwhelms the real economy. The lessons of the global financial crisis have not been assimilated, and we are learning all too slowly the lessons of environmental deterioration. Some circles maintain that current economics and technology will solve all environmental problems, and argue, in popular and non-technical terms, that the problems of global hunger and poverty will be resolved simply by market growth. They are less concerned with certain economic theories which today scarcely anybody dares defend, than with their actual operation in the functioning of the economy. They may not affirm such theories with words, but nonetheless support them with their deeds by showing no interest in more balanced levels of production, a better distribution of wealth, concern for the environment and the rights of future generations. Their behaviour shows that for them maximizing profits is enough. Yet by itself the market cannot guarantee integral human development and social inclusion. At the same time, we have "a sort of 'superdevelopment' of a wasteful and consumerist kind which forms an unacceptable contrast with the ongoing situations of dehumanizing deprivation", while we are all too slow in developing economic institutions and social initiatives which can give the poor regular access to basic resources. We fail to see the deepest roots of our present failures, which have to do with the direction, goals, meaning and social implications of technological and economic growth.

Laudato Si:
108. The idea of promoting a different cultural paradigm and employing technology as a mere instrument is nowadays inconceivable. The technological paradigm has become so dominant that it would be difficult to do without its resources and even more difficult to utilize them without being dominated by their internal logic. It has become countercultural to choose a lifestyle whose goals are even partly independent of technology, of its costs and its power to globalize and make us all the same. Technology tends to absorb everything into its ironclad logic, and those who are surrounded with technology "know full well that it moves forward in the final analysis neither for profit nor for the well-being of the human race", that "in the most radical sense of the term power is its motive - a lordship over all". As a result, "man seizes hold of the naked elements of both nature and human nature". Our capacity to make decisions, a more genuine freedom and the space for each one's alternative creativity are diminished.

Exodus 34: Again Moses went up the mountain and stood before God. God described himself: "I am the Lord, a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in kindness and faithfulness." When Moses came down from the mountain the skin on his face was radiant after speaking with God.
Dear God, we praise your tenderness and compassion

Daniel 3.52-55: You are blest, Lord God of our fathers. To you glory and praise for evermore. Blest your glorious holy name. To you glory and praise for evermore. You are blest in the temple of your glory. To you glory and praise for evermore. You are blest on the throne of your kingdom. To you glory and praise for evermore. You are blest who gaze into the depths. To you glory and praise for evermore. You are blest in the firmament of heaven. To you glory and praise for evermore.

2 Corinthians 13.1-13: Soon I will be with you for a third time. What I ask is that you live the way God wants you to live. So, grow in your Christian life. Help one another. Be united. Live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, help me live the way you want me to live

John 3.13-17: Jesus said to the religious leader: "The Son of Man must be lifted up on a cross, as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him". God loved the world so much, that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.
Jesus, only Son of God the Father, thank you for coming into this world. Please help more and more people believe in you

Laudato Si:107. It can be said that many problems of today's world stem from the tendency, at times unconscious, to make the method and aims of science and technology an epistemological paradigm which shapes the lives of individuals and the workings of society. The effects of imposing this model on reality as a whole, human and social, are seen in the deterioration of the environment, but this is just one sign of a reductionism which affects every aspect of human and social life. We have to accept that technological products are not neutral, for they create a framework which ends up conditioning lifestyles and shaping social possibilities along the lines dictated by the interests of certain powerful groups. Decisions which may seem purely instrumental are in reality decisions about the kind of society we want to build.

Deuteronomy 8: Moses continued his speech to the people: "Remember how the Lord your God led you for 40 years in the wilderness, to humble you, to test you, to know your inmost heart - whether you would keep his commandments or not. He humbled you, he fed you with manna, to make you understand that we do not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Learn from this that the Lord your God was training you as a man trains his child. Keep the commandments of the Lord your God. Follow his ways and reverence him. When you become prosperous in the land that God is giving you, do not become proud and say your own efforts have brought you success. Take care and do not forget the Lord your God."

Psalm 4: At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you will keep on chasing false goals? Thank you, Lord, for your love and help right through today

People who refuse to accept the Good News are facing an eternal penalty: to be excluded forever from the presence of the Lord. Jesus replied "Keep the commandments: do not kill; do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother; care for others as much as you care about yourself". The young man said "I have kept all these commandments. What else do I need to do?" Jesus said "If you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of my disciples". When the young man heard these words he went away sad, because he was very rich. Jesus then said to his disciples "It is hard for a rich person to get to Heaven".

Laudato Si:106. The basic problem goes even deeper: it is the way that humanity has taken up technology and its development according to an undifferentiated and one-dimensional paradigm. This paradigm exalts the concept of a subject who, using logical and rational procedures, progressively approaches and gains control over an external object. This subject makes every effort to establish the scientific and experimental method, which in itself is already a technique of possession, mastery and transformation. It is as if the subject were to find itself in the presence of something formless, completely open to manipulation. Men and women have constantly intervened in nature, but for a long time this meant being in tune with and respecting the possibilities offered by the things themselves. It was a matter of receiving what nature itself allowed, as if from its own hand. Now, by contrast, we are the ones to lay our hands on things, attempting to extract everything possible from them while frequently ignoring or forgetting the reality in front of us. Human beings and material objects no longer extend a friendly hand to one another; the relationship has become confrontational. This has made it easy to accept the idea of infinite or unlimited growth, which proves so attractive to economists, financiers and experts in technology. It is based on the lie that there is an infinite supply of the earth's goods, and this leads to the planet being squeezed dry beyond every limit. It is the false notion that "an infinite quantity of energy and resources are available, that it is possible to renew them quickly, and that the negative effects of the exploitation of the natural order can be easily absorbed".

Deuteronomy 7: Moses continued his speech to the people: "You are a people consecrated to the Lord your God. It is you that the Lord our God has chosen to be his very own people out of all the peoples on the earth. But know this: if the Lord set his heart on you and chose you, it was not because you outnumbered other peoples. In fact you were the least of all peoples. It was for love of you and to keep his promise to our ancestors that the Lord chose you.

Listen then to these ordinances, be true to them and observe them, and in return the Lord your God will be true to you. He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your body and the produce of your soil, your corn, your wine, your oil, the issue of your cattle, the young of your flock. No man or woman among will shall be barren, no male or female of your beasts infertile. The Lord will keep all sickness far from you. Be loyal then to the Lord and have nothing to do with the religious practices of the people you will conquer

June - month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: Jesus' promises to St. Margaret Mary in 1675

Laudato Si:105. There is a tendency to believe that every increase in power means "an increase of 'progress' itself", an advance in "security, usefulness, welfare and vigour; an assimilation of new values into the stream of culture", as if reality, goodness and truth automatically flow from technological and economic power as such. The fact is that "contemporary man has not been trained to use power well", because our immense technological development has not been accompanied by a development in human responsibility, values and conscience. Each age tends to have only a meagre awareness of its own limitations. It is possible that we do not grasp the gravity of the challenges now before us. "The risk is growing day by day that man will not use his power as he should"; in effect, "power is never considered in terms of the responsibility of choice which is inherent in freedom" since its "only norms are taken from alleged necessity, from either utility or security". But human beings are not completely autonomous. Our freedom fades when it is handed over to the blind forces of the unconscious, of immediate needs, of self-interest, and of violence. In this sense, we stand naked and exposed in the face of our ever-increasing power, lacking the wherewithal to control it. We have certain superficial mechanisms, but we cannot claim to have a sound ethics, a culture and spirituality genuinely capable of setting limits and teaching clear-minded self-restraint.

Laudato Si:104. Yet it must also be recognized that nuclear energy, biotechnology, information technology, knowledge of our DNA, and many other abilities which we have acquired, have given us tremendous power. More precisely, they have given those with the knowledge, and especially the economic resources to use them, an impressive dominance over the whole of humanity and the entire world. Never has humanity had such power over itself, yet nothing ensures that it will be used wisely, particularly when we consider how it is currently being used. We need but think of the nuclear bombs dropped in the middle of the twentieth century, or the array of technology which Nazism, Communism and other totalitarian regimes have employed to kill millions of people, to say nothing of the increasingly deadly arsenal of weapons available for modern warfare. In whose hands does all this power lie, or will it eventually end up? It is extremely risky for a small part of humanity to have it.

Zephaniah 3.14-18: Shout for joy, daughter of Zion, Israel, shout aloud! Rejoice, exult with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem! The Lord has repealed your sentence; he has driven your enemies away. The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst; you have no more evil to fear. When that day comes, word will come to Jerusalem: Zion, have no fear, do not let your hands fall limp. The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult with joy over you, he will renew you by his love; he will dance with shouts of joy for you as on a day of festival.

Isaiah 12: Truly, God is my salvation, I trust, I shall not fear. For the Lord is my strength, my song, he became my saviour. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Give thanks to the Lord, give praise to his name! Make his mighty deeds known to the peoples! Declare the greatness of his name. Sing a psalm to the Lord for he has done glorious deeds; make them known to all the earth! People of Zion, sing and shout for joy, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel

Romans 12.9-13: Do not let your love be superficial, but sincerely prefer good to evil. Have a family love for each other, and a profound respect for each other. Persevere in your love for the Lord and your service of the Lord. Hope will make you cheerful. Do not give up when trials come. Keep on praying. Help people who are in need. Make hospitality your special care
Jesus, please help me grow in love. Help me love you and other people a bit better

Luke 1.39-45: As soon as she could and as quickly as she could, Mary went to Elizabeth's home in the hills near Jerusalem. As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby in Elizabeth's womb jumped, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth said to Mary "Of all women, you are the most blessed, and blessed is the baby in your womb. Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord?  Blessed are you for believing God's promise"
Mary, blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus
