Tues June 13
I spent yesterday at the desk on prison jobs .... and today
hope to visit a prison ... which will create more jobs ...which will
require more time at the desk!

Neglecting to monitor the harm done to nature and the environmental impact of
our decisions is only the most striking sign of a disregard for the message
contained in the structures of nature itself. When we fail to acknowledge as
part of reality the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with
disabilities - to offer just a few examples - it becomes difficult to hear the
cry of nature itself; everything is connected. Once the human being declares
independence from reality and behaves with absolute dominion, the very
foundations of our life begin to crumble, for "instead of carrying out
his role as a cooperator with God in the work of creation, man
sets himself up in place of God and thus ends up provoking a rebellion on the
part of nature".

"You shall not commit adultery or fornication.
You must avoid all forms of prostitution.
You may demand interest on a loan to a foreigner,
but do not practise usury among yourselves.
Be honest in all your dealings".
Dear

Psalms
17-18: Lord, when trouble breaks out on every
side,
please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress,
my savior.
I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life.
I will praise you among the nations.
Lord, you are worthy of
all praise

Timothy 4.1-7:
Don't be surprised if some people come up with
strange ideas about how to live life. Satan and his friends are always
trying to sow lies and deception in the Lord's field of truth. Have nothing to do with strange ideas like
"marriage is forbidden" or "you are not allowed to eat
certain foods". Everything God made is good, and no food is to
be rejected, provided grace is said for it. The word of God and prayer
make food holy
Jesus, please help me remember to say a little
prayer before I eat

Matthew
23.1-6:
Jesus told the people to respect
their religious leaders, but he condemned the religious leaders
- for not practising what they preached
- for doing things just to attract attention
- for craving front seats and places of honor
- for being concerned only with externals
Jesus called the religious
leaders
- "hypocrites"
- "blind guides"
- "tombs that look good on the outside but are full of dead
bones".
Jesus, help religious leaders be good

Modernity has been marked by an excessive anthropocentrism which today, under
another guise, continues to stand in the way of shared understanding and of
any effort to strengthen social bonds. The time has come to pay renewed
attention to reality and the limits it imposes; this in turn is the condition
for a more sound and fruitful development of individuals and society. An
inadequate presentation of Christian anthropology gave rise to a wrong
understanding of the relationship between human beings and the world.
Often, what was handed on was a Promethean vision of mastery over the world,
which gave the impression that the protection of nature was something that
only the faint-hearted cared about. Instead, our "dominion" over the
universe should be understood more properly in the sense of responsible
stewardship.

"A life for a life, an eye for an

a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot.
When you go to war, the following men are excused from fighting:
a man who has not yet dedicated his newly-built house;
a man who has planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit;
a man who is engaged to be married;
a man who is fearful and faint of heart."

Psalm
16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in
you.
You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me.
Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad.
My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life,
the fullness of joy in your presence,
at your right hand, happiness for ever.
Thank you, Lord, for the little
joys you give us each day

Timothy 3.1-15: To want to be a presiding elder is to want to
do a noble work.
That is why the president must be above reproach: He must not have been married more than once.
He must be temperate, discreet, courteous, hospitable, a good teacher, not
a heavy drinker, not hot-tempered, but kind and peaceable. He must not be a lover of money. He must be a
man who manages his family well and brings up his children well. How could anyone who can't manage his
own family
be given responsibility to manage God's family? He should not be a new convert in case he
becomes full of pride. The Church of the
living God is God's family.
The Church is the guardian of the truth

Matthew
22.34-40: In Jerusalem a religious leader

"Which is the most important commandment?" Jesus replied

commandments.
All other commandments depend on these two."

In a world which has so many problems .... when we often feel so weak and helpless ... it is good for us if we have the chance to spend some time in silent prayer before Jesus in the tabernacle of a church. No need to say much....just a word of praise ....quiet awareness of Jesus' presence....a reflection with Jesus on the day's Bible readings....a few prayers for special needs....a final prayer of thanks and praise. Yes, we can pray anywhere and at any time. But ten minutes spent before a tabernacle is one of the best things we can do for ourselves, our families, our nation, our world. May today's Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ give us the motivation to sometimes visit a church for prayer.
I continue to spend time each day processing mail/messages
between prisoners from overseas and their families ...using W/App and email.
Kind people who used to do this job have gone to UK. If anyone could help me

115. Modern anthropocentrism has
paradoxically ended up prizing technical thought over reality, since "the
technological mind sees nature as an insensate order, as a cold body of facts,
as a mere 'given', as an object of utility, as raw material to be hammered
into useful shape; it views the cosmos similarly as a mere 'space' into which
objects can be thrown with complete indifference". The intrinsic
dignity of the world is thus compromised. When
human beings fail to find their true place in this world, they misunderstand
themselves and end up acting against themselves: "Not only has God
given the earth to man, who must use it with respect for the original good
purpose for which it was given, but, man too is God's gift to man. He must
therefore respect the natural and moral structure with which he has been
endowed"

Deuteronomy
8: Moses
continued his speech to the people: "Remember how the Lord your God led
you for 40 years in the wilderness, to humble you, to test you, to know your
inmost heart - whether you would keep his commandments or not. He humbled you, he
fed you with manna, to make you understand that we do not live on bread
alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Learn from this that
the Lord your God was training you as a man trains his child. Keep the
commandments of the Lord your God. Follow his ways and reverence him. When you
become prosperous in the land that God is giving you, do not become proud and
say your own efforts have brought you success. Take care and do not forget the
Lord your God."
Dear Lord, don't let me ever forget all you have done for me
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
116: I love
the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the
day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of
death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord
has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the
living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The
cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes
of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I
am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Corinthians 10.16 - 11.1: The
cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ. The bread that we
break is a communion with the body of Christ. Avoid anything to do with
idol worship. It doesn't make sense to share in the table of the Lord
and in the table of demons. Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you
do at all, do it for the glory of God. Never do anything offensive to anyone.
Try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for your own
advantage, but for the advantage of others, so that they may be saved. Take
me for your model, as I take Christ.
Jesus, please help me imitate you in my daily life

John
6.52-58: The
people said among themselves "How can this man give us his flesh to
eat?" Jesus replied "If you refuse to eat my flesh , and drink my
blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink
my blood has eternal life. For
my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink. Anyone who eats my
flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I live in them. As I, who am sent
by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me
will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven. Anyone who
eats this bread will live for ever".
Jesus, thank you for

All of this shows the urgent need for us to move forward in a bold cultural
revolution. Science and technology are not neutral; from the beginning to the
end of a process, various intentions and possibilities are in play and can
take on distinct shapes. Nobody is suggesting a return to the Stone Age, but we
do need to slow down and look at reality in a different way, to appropriate
the positive and sustainable progress which has been made, but also to recover
the values and the great goals swept away by our unrestrained delusions of
grandeur.

Timothy 1.18 - 2.8: Timothy, my son, as I

prayed over you that you would be a good leader. My
first bit of advice
is that there should be prayers offered for everyone, especially for kings
and others in authority, so that we can live our life of faith in peace
and quiet. God wants everyone to
be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. There is only one God,
and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a man,
Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for everyone. In every place, I want
believers to lift up their hands in reverent prayer

113. There is also the fact that people no
longer seem to believe in a happy future; they no longer have blind trust in a
better tomorrow based on the present state of the world and our technical
abilities. There is a growing awareness that scientific and technological
progress cannot be equated with the progress of humanity and history, a
growing sense that the way to a better future lies elsewhere. This is not to
reject the possibilities which technology continues to offer us. But humanity
has changed profoundly, and the accumulation of constant novelties exalts a
superficiality which pulls us in one direction. It becomes difficult to pause
and recover depth in life. If architecture reflects the spirit of an age, our
megastructures and drab apartment blocks express the spirit of globalized
technology, where a constant flood of new products coexists with a tedious
monotony. Let us refuse to resign
ourselves to this, and continue to wonder about the purpose and meaning of
everything. Otherwise we would simply legitimate the present situation
and need new forms of escapism to help us endure the emptiness.

Yet we can once more broaden our vision. We have the freedom needed to limit
and direct technology; we can put it at the service of another type of
progress, one which is healthier, more human, more social, more integral.
Liberation from the dominant technocratic paradigm does in fact happen
sometimes, for example, when cooperatives of small producers adopt less
polluting means of production, and opt for a non-consumerist model of life,
recreation and community. Or when technology is directed primarily to
resolving people's concrete problems, truly helping them live with more
dignity and less suffering. Or indeed when the desire to create and
contemplate beauty manages to overcome reductionism through a kind of
salvation which occurs in beauty and in those who behold it. An
authentic humanity, calling for a new synthesis, seems to dwell in the midst
of our technological culture, almost unnoticed, like a mist seeping
gently beneath a closed door. Will the promise last, in spite of everything,
with all that is authentic rising up in stubborn resistance?

Ecological culture cannot be reduced to a series of urgent and partial
responses to the immediate problems of pollution, environmental decay and the
depletion of natural resources. There needs to be a distinctive way of looking
at things, a way of thinking, policies, an educational programme, a lifestyle
and a spirituality which together generate resistance to the assault of the
technocratic paradigm. Otherwise, even the best ecological initiatives can
find themselves caught up in the same globalized logic. To
seek only a technical remedy to each environmental problem which comes up is
to separate what is in reality interconnected and to mask the true and deepest
problems of the global system

The
Book Blog:
readings + recordings
Readings are from
Simple Bible
Deuteronomy 11: Moses continued his
speech to the people:
"You must love the Lord your God.
Remember this day, how it was you who heard these words,
not your children.
It is your eyes that have seen the great works God has done.
Keep the Lord's commandments,
so that you may have strength to conquer the land God is giving you.
That land is a land of hills and valleys watered by rain from heaven.
If you love the Lord your God with all your heart
the Lord will give your land its rain in due season,
autumn and spring,
so that you may harvest your corn, your wine and your oil.
But if you forget the Lord your God and worship other gods,
then the heavens will be closed and produce no rain.
See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse:
a blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord our God;
a curse if you disobey the commandments of the Lord our God."
Dear
Lord, please help us to obey you and never forget you,
and please give rain to places that urgently need it
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
7: Lord God, I take refuge in
you.
Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad
things.
Please help good people to keep on doing good things.
Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for
your goodness to me.
Lord, please help me to avoid
evil and to do good

Thessalonians 3.10-16: We gave you a rule when we were with you:
not to let anyone have any food if he refused to do any work. Yet we hear that some of you are living in
idleness, doing no work themselves but interfering with everyone else's
work. In the Lord Jesus Christ, we order and call on
such people
to go on quietly working and earning the food that they eat. Never grow tired of doing what is right.
May the Lord of peace give you peace always
and everywhere
Jesus, don't let me interfere in other
people's business

Matthew
20.20-28:
The brothers James and John were two of Jesus'
disciples.
One day their mother ((Jesus' aunt!!)) said to Jesus
"When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and
left". Jesus said to James
and John
"Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and
left". The 10 other disciples were angry
at James and John for seeking honor. So Jesus said to them all
"In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others.
But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by
serving others, not dominating them,
just as I came not to be served, but to serve,
and to give my life as a ransom for the world".
Jesus, please help me want to help and serve
other people, not dominate and control them
