Any approach to an integral ecology,
which by definition does not exclude human beings, needs
to take account of the value of labour, as Saint John Paul II wisely
noted in his Encyclical Laborem
Exercens. According to the biblical account of creation, God placed man
and woman in the garden he had created not only to preserve it ("keep")
but also to make it fruitful ("till"). Labourers and craftsmen thus
"maintain the fabric of the world". Developing the created world in
a prudent way is the best way of caring for it, as this means that we
ourselves become the instrument used by God to bring out the potential which
he himself inscribed in things: "The Lord created medicines out of the
earth, and a sensible man will not despise them".

Deuteronomy 32: The Song of Moses: Listen, O heavens, and I will speak; let the earth hear the words on my lips. May my teaching fall like the rain, my speech descend like the dew, like rain drops on the young green, like showers falling on the grass. For I shall praise the name of the Lord. O give glory to this God of ours! The Rock - his deeds are perfect, and all his ways are just, a faithful God, without deceit, a God who is right and just. Those whom he begot unblemished have become crooked, false, perverse. Is it thus you repay the Lord, O senseless and foolish people? Is he not your father who created you, he who made you, on whom you depend? Remember the days of old, consider the years that are past; ask you father and he will show you, ask your elders and they will tell you.
When the Most High
gave the nations their heritage
and disposed men according to his plan,
in fixing the boundaries of the nations
he thought first of Israel's sons.
For Israel was the Lord's possession,
Jacob the one he had chosen. God found him in a
wilderness,
in fearful, desolate wastes; he surrounded him, he lifted him up,
he kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that
watches its nest,
that hovers over its young,
so he spread his wings; he took him,
placed him on his outstretched wings.
The Lord alone was his guide
and no other god was with him.
Dear
Lord, thank you for life and all your love and care

Timothy 6.3-10:
Some people, because of ignorance and pride,
have a craze for questioning and arguing about everything. Such a craze breeds jealousy and mistrust and
unending disputes. People who have a craving to be wealthy are a
prey to temptation.
They get trapped into all sorts of foolish and dangerous schemes which
ruin their lives. The love of money is the root of all evils. It

26.17-29:
On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with
his apostles.
While they were eating, Jesus told them he knew he would be betrayed by
one of them. He told Judas he knew he was the betrayer. Then Jesus took some bread,
blessed it and gave it to his apostles saying "Take this and eat it.
This is my body". Then he took a cup of wine,
blessed it and gave it to them saying
"Take this and drink it. This is my blood".

The culture of relativism is the same disorder which drives one person to take
advantage of another, to treat others as mere objects, imposing forced labour
on them or enslaving them to pay their debts. The same kind of thinking leads
to the sexual exploitation of children and abandonment of the elderly who no
longer serve our interests. It is also the mindset of those who say: Let us
allow the invisible forces of the market to regulate the economy, and consider
their impact on society and nature as collateral damage. In
the absence of objective truths or sound principles other than the
satisfaction of our own desires and immediate needs, what limits can be placed
on human trafficking, organized crime, the drug trade, commerce in blood
diamonds and the fur of endangered species? Is it not the same
relativistic logic which justifies buying the organs of the poor for resale or
use in experimentation, or eliminating children because they are not what
their parents wanted? This same "use and throw away" logic generates
so much waste, because of the disordered desire to consume more than what is
really necessary. We should not think that political efforts or the force of
law will be sufficient to prevent actions which affect the environment
because, when the culture itself is corrupt and objective truth and
universally valid principles are no longer upheld, then laws can only be seen
as arbitrary impositions or obstacles to be avoided.

Matthew
26.1-16: A few days before the Passover festival,
the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him
put to death. Jesus knew what was happening. He
told his disciples
"In a few days I will be crucified". During these days Jesus had a
meal at the home of Simon the leper.
At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus'
head.
The woman understood that Jesus was soon to die. One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas
Iscariot, went to the religious leaders
and offered to help them arrest Jesus at a convenient time.
The leaders paid Judas 30 pieces of silver.
Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest.
Jesus, please forgive me for the times when I have not been faithful to you

122. A misguided anthropocentrism leads to
a misguided lifestyle. In the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, I
noted that the practical relativism typical of our age is "even more
dangerous than doctrinal relativism". When human beings place
themselves at the centre, they give absolute priority to immediate convenience
and all else becomes relative. Hence we should not be surprised to find, in
conjunction with the omnipresent technocratic paradigm and the cult of
unlimited human power, the rise of a relativism which sees everything as
irrelevant unless it serves one's own immediate interests. There is a logic in
all this whereby different attitudes can feed on one another, leading
to environmental degradation and social decay.

Deuteronomy
29-30: Moses called the whole
of Israel together and said to them:
"Keep the words of this covenant and observe them
and you will thrive in all you do.
Let there be no man or woman among you,
no clan or tribe, whose heart turns away from the Lord your God
to go and serve the gods of the nations.
If ever you are scattered from the land God is giving you,
God will bring you back when your hearts turn back to him.
The Lord will circumcise your hearts
until you love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul.
This law I enjoin on you today is not beyond your strength
or beyond your reach.
It is not in heaven, so that you need to wonder
'who will go up to heaven for us and bring it down to us
so that we may hear it and keep it?'
Nor is it beyond the seas, so that you need to wonder
'who will cross the sea for us and bring it back to us,
so that we may hear it and keep it?'
No, the Word is very near to you.
It is in your mouth and in your heart for your observance.
See, today I set before you life and prosperity,
death and disaster.
If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God,
if you love the Lord your God and follow his ways,
if you keep his commandments, his laws, his customs,
you will live and increase,
and the Lord your God will bless you
in the land which you are entering to make your own.
But if your heart strays, if you refuse to listen,
if you let yourself be drawn into worshipping other gods
and serving them,
I tell you today, you will most certainly perish;
you will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan
to enter and possess.
I call heaven and earth to witness against you today:
I set before you life or death, blessing or curse.
Choose life, then, so that you and your descendants
may live in the love of the Lord your God,
obeying his voice, clinging to him.
For in this your life consists,
and on this depends your long stay in the land
which the Lord swore to your fathers
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob he would give them"

I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man.
Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the
Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer

My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me.
They make holes in my hands and my feet.
They await my death. They divide my clothing among them,
they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that you are good and
holy.
I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them.
It was you who took me from the womb
and entrusted me to my mother's breast.
To you I was committed from my birth,
from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now.
I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator.
May all the nations know and worship you.

and Mary moved back to their own town of Nazareth. The child Jesus was filled
with wisdom as he grew older. Each year Joseph and Mary would take Jesus
to Jerusalem for the celebration of the Passover. When Jesus was 12
years old, they went to Jerusalem as usual. But when their traveling group
left Jerusalem, Jesus stayed behind without his parents knowing it. They
presumed he was somewhere with the group. When they couldn't find him, they
went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After 2 days, they found him, in
the Temple, listening to the religion teachers and asking them questions.
People who heard him were astounded at his intelligence. His mother said to
him "My child, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been
really worried about you". Jesus replied "Why were you looking for
me? Didn't you know that I must be concerned with my Father's work?"
But they didn't understand what he meant. He went with them to Nazareth and
lived under their authority. His
mother stored all these things in her heart

119. Nor must the critique of a misguided
anthropocentrism underestimate the importance of interpersonal relations. If
the present ecological crisis is one small sign of the ethical, cultural and
spiritual crisis of modernity, we
cannot presume to heal our relationship with nature and the environment
without healing all fundamental human relationships. Christian thought
sees human beings as possessing a particular dignity above other creatures; it
thus inculcates esteem for each person and respect for others. Our openness to
others, each of whom is a "thou" capable of knowing, loving and
entering into dialogue, remains the source of our nobility as human persons. A
correct relationship with the created world demands that we not weaken this
social dimension of openness to others, much less the transcendent dimension
of our openness to the "Thou" of God. Our relationship with the
environment can never be isolated from our relationship with others and with
God. Otherwise, it would be nothing more than romantic individualism dressed
up in ecological garb, locking us into a stifling immanence.

25.31-46: Jesus said to his disciples:
When I come in glory at the end of the world,
all peoples of all times will be gathered in front of me. I will separate them, like a
shepherd separates sheep from goats.
I will place the sheep on my right, the goats on my left. I will say to those on my right
"Come and enter my kingdom.
For I was hungry, and you gave me food.
I was thirsty, and you gave me drink.
I was a stranger, and you made me welcome.
I was naked, and you clothed me.
I was sick, and you visited me.
I was in prison, and you came to see me".
Then those good people on my right will say
"Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you?
When did we see you thirsty and give you a drink?
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you,
naked and clothe you, sick or in prison, and visit you?" I will answer
"Each time you helped and cared for a poor person,
you helped and cared for me".
Then I will say to those on my
left
"Go away from me and join Satan and his angels in hell. For I was hungry, and you never
gave me food.
I was thirsty, and you never gave me anything to drink.
I was a stranger, and you never made me welcome,
naked, and you never clothed me,
sick and in prison, and you never visited me". Those on my left will then ask
"Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or naked,
sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?" I will answer
"Each time you refused to help and care for a poor person,
you refused to help and care for me". Those on the left will then go to
eternal punishment.
Those on the right will go to eternal life.
Jesus, please help me do more for poor people.
Make me understand that when I help a poor person, I help you

Reflection: Jesus is not going to ask if we went to church (though that's important) or if we kept the 10 Commandments (also important) but ...did we help poor people!

Yesterday morning someone asked me what I thought of the really

Wed June 14
Yesterday I was at Lai Chi Kok men's prison from 10am to 5pm
yesterday ....spending time (no pun intended) with dozens of prisoners ....
and one new experience for me: I helped an elderly man from overseas fill out
an application form for bail .... on a slightly complicated form ... my
first time to see such a form .... to go my letter offering him bail
accommodation and surety ... as I have done for about 20 others over the past
10 years or so. Man is one of several elderly people recently tricked on line
to bring drugs to HK .... a real tragedy.

This situation has led to a constant schizophrenia, wherein a technocracy
which sees no intrinsic value in lesser beings coexists with the other
extreme, which sees no special value in human beings. But one cannot prescind
from humanity. There can be no renewal
of our relationship with nature without a renewal of humanity itself.
There can be no ecology without an adequate anthropology. When the human
person is considered as simply one being among others, the product of chance
or physical determinism, then "our overall sense of responsibility
wanes". A misguided anthropocentrism need not necessarily yield to
"biocentrism", for that would entail adding yet another imbalance,
failing to solve present problems and adding new ones. Human beings cannot be
expected to feel responsibility for the world unless, at the same time, their
unique capacities of knowledge, will, freedom and responsibility are
recognized and valued. (my
comment: this document is too long! Lot of repetition! Should be shorter and
simpler!!!)

Simple Bible
Deuteronomy 26:
Moses' teaching:
"When you enter
the land the Lord your God is giving you,
you must take the first-fruits of your produce
to the priest then in office and say.
'Today I declare to the Lord my God
that I have come to the land
the Lord swore to our fathers he would give us.'
After the priest receives your offering, you must declare:
'My father was a wandering Aramaean. He went down to Egypt to find refuge there, few in number.
But then he became a nation, great and strong.
The Egyptians ill-treated us, they gave us no peace
and inflicted harsh slavery on us.
But we called on the Lord our God who heard our voice
and saw our misery, toil and oppression.
The Lord our God then brought us out of Egypt
with mighty hand and outstretched arm, with signs and wonders.
He brought us here and gave us this land,
a land where milk and honey flow. So I now bring the first-fruits of my produce
that you, Lord, have given me'.
You are then to share these gifts with your household
and with the Levite and stranger who live among you."
Dear
Lord, help me to show gratitude for all your gifts,
by sharing what I have with those less fortunate than I

Psalm
19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God,
the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are
God's handwriting.
The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's
law
which shines in our hearts.
The precepts of the Lord
enlighten our lives
each day.
The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more
than gold,
they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But often we are unaware of our
errors.
Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth
and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you

more important to keep fit spiritually. We have put our trust in the living God. He is

Matthew
24.9-44: Jesus spoke to his disciples about the
future:
"On account of my name you will be hated, tortured and killed.
But the Good News of the kingdom will spread to every nation
before the end of the world. At the end of the world, the sun
and moon will stop shining.
Stars will fall from the sky. Then the sign of the Son of Man
will appear in the sky
and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds
with power and glory.
He will send his angels with a loud trumpet
to gather good people from all parts of the earth. Therefore you should
live a good life,
and you will have nothing to fear on your last day."
Jesus, please help me be a good person
