Yesterday I was at Lo Wu women's prison from 10am to
3pm ... before going to nearby St Paul's retreat house for the monthly O.M.I.
overnight meeting. When the meeting finishes at midday today, I hope to go
back to Lo Wu for a few more hours.
Prayers please for a 40 year old women in intensive care in a
HK hospital. I anointed her and prayed for her healing on Sunday night. JESUS,
PLEASE HEAL MARGARET!

Joshua
4: After the Israelites
crossed the Jordan River,
Joshua selected 12 men, one from each tribe,
and told them to get 12 stones from the middle of the Jordan. The 12 stones
were set up at Gilgal, east of Jericho, as a reminder of how God had helped the Israelites
cross the river. When children in the
future asked "What do these stones mean?"
parents were to answer:
"The waters of the Jordan separated and stopped flowing
when the Lord's Sacred Chest entered the river.
These 12 stones are a permanent reminder of this." As soon as
the
Israelites had finished crossing the Jordan,
its waters immediately started flowing again.
Dear
Lord, please don't let me ever forget
the many times you have helped me cross "Jordan" rivers
My

Psalm
32: Happy is the person whose sin is forgiven.
For a while I refused to ask for forgiveness,
and my body paid the penalty. But then I said "Lord, forgive me"
and my spirit and body revived.
Lord, when I do wrong, please give me the grace to say sorry and ask forgiveness

in turn will be able to teach others. Put up with your share
of difficulties like a good soldier of Christ Jesus, like an athlete who
keeps all the rules, like a hard-working farmer. Remember the Good News
that I carry: "Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race
of David". On account of this Good
News I am chained up like a criminal.
But no-one can chain up the Good News

Matthew
27.1-26:
Early in the morning, the religious leaders
had Jesus bound with ropes.
They then took him to Pilate, the Roman governor. The leaders accused
Jesus of many crimes.
To the governor's amazement, Jesus remained silent. The leaders persuaded
the crowd to demand
the execution of Jesus. They called out to Pilate "Crucify him".
Pilate asked "Why? What has
he done wrong?"
The crowd shouted all the louder "Crucify him. Crucify him". Pilate then washed his hands in
front of the crowd and said
"I am innocent of this man's blood".
The crowd shouted "His blood be on us and on our children". Pilate then ordered Jesus to be
scourged and crucified.
Jesus, help people who are condemned to death
Listen

Reflection: The crowd in today's Gospel are not the same people who escorted Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Today's crowd ...who just happened (?) to be at Pilate's court at 6am, are likely to have been a "rent-a-crowd" group for the occasion

At Lo Wu prison yesterday I saw the day's supply of
vegetables in a lower ground location ...a huge supply of tomatoes, potatoes,
carrots etc....for 1,200 prisoners. Then as I left that area through a
door I noticed a lonely carrot on the ground ....and felt sorry for it
....thinking it had been dropped ....but then when I looked more closely I saw
it was not a carrot .... but a red door stop!!!

Yesterday morning after my 8.30 Cantonese Mass at St Paul's Parish in Yau Ma Tei I concelebrated the 10am Mass for the parish feast day ....then had 12noon English Mass at the Dr Jesus Centre for a special group of domestic helpers. Long time since I had 3 Masses on one day. And I'm due to have same 3 Masses this coming Sunday!
Today I'm hoping to visit Lo Wu women's prison ....before going to the overnight monthly O.M.I. retreat at nearby St Paul's retreat centre in Sheung Shui.

In the philosophical and theological vision of the human being and of creation
which I have presented, it is clear that the human person, endowed with reason
and knowledge, is not an external factor to be excluded. While human
intervention on plants and animals is permissible when it pertains to the
necessities of human life, the Catechism
of the Catholic Church teaches that experimentation
on animals is morally acceptable only "if it remains within
reasonable limits (and) contributes to caring for or saving human
lives". The Catechism firmly
states that human power has limits and that "it is contrary to human
dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly". All such use
and experimentation "requires a religious respect for the integrity of
creation".

26.69-75: Peter went to the place where the religious
leaders had Jesus on trial.
A young woman in the courtyard of the place said to him
"You are a friend of the Galilean". In front of the woman and people
around her
Peter said "I don't know what you're talking about". Peter went to the gateway of the
place, where another woman said to people around her "This man is a
friend of the Galilean".
Peter replied strongly "I don't know the man". Not long after this a group of
people said to Peter
"You are his friend. We can tell by your Galilean accent". Then Peter even more strongly
replied "I do not know the man". At that very moment, a rooster
crowed.
Peter remembered Jesus' words "Before the rooster crows, you will
deny me three times". Peter went outside and wept loudly.
Jesus, please help me not to deny you. Give me courage to say "I am a Christian"
Reflection: For the rest of his life, Peter was not really keen on hearing a rooster crow?

In order to continue providing employment, it is imperative to promote an
economy which favours productive diversity and business creativity. For
example, there is a great variety of small-scale food production systems which
feed the greater part of the world's peoples, using a modest amount of land
and producing less waste, be it in small agricultural parcels, in orchards and
gardens, hunting and wild harvesting or local fishing. Economies of scale,
especially in the agricultural sector, end up forcing smallholders to sell
their land or to abandon their traditional crops. Their attempts to move to
other, more diversified, means of production prove fruitless because of the
difficulty of linkage with regional and global markets, or because the
infrastructure for sales and transport is geared to larger businesses. Civil
authorities have the right and duty to adopt clear and firm measures in
support of small producers and differentiated production. To ensure economic
freedom from which all can effectively benefit, restraints occasionally have
to be imposed on those possessing greater resources and financial power. To
claim economic freedom while real conditions
bar many people from actual access to it, and while possibilities for
employment continue to shrink, is to practise a doublespeak which brings
politics into disrepute. Business is a noble vocation, directed to producing
wealth and improving our world. It can be a fruitful source of prosperity for
the areas in which it operates, especially if it sees the creation of jobs as
an essential part of its service to the common good.

Jeremiah 18-20: Some officials decided to get rid of
Jeremiah.
They did not want to listen to his message any more.
"Come on," they said, "let us make a case against
him." Jeremiah prayed to God:
"Lord, you know that people are plotting against me.
Please help me and keep me safe." One of the Temple priests had Jeremiah beaten
and put in stocks for a day near the Temple. Again Jeremiah prayed to God:
"You have seduced me, Lord.
You have told me to proclaim a harsh message for the people. This has made me a
laughing-stock.
Being your messenger has caused me insult all the day long. At one stage I even thought of not speaking
your message any more.
But then I felt a fire burning in my heart. I could not stop thinking of you. I just had to speak your message."
Lord, please increase my

faith in you.
May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart.
No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison.
In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant.
Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God.

We were created with a vocation to work. The goal should not be that
technological progress increasingly replace human work, for this would be
detrimental to humanity. Work is a necessity, part of the meaning of life on
this earth, a path to growth, human development and personal fulfilment.
Helping the poor financially must always be a provisional solution in the face
of pressing needs. The broader objective should always be to allow them a
dignified life through work. Yet the
orientation of the economy has favoured a kind of technological progress in
which the costs of production are reduced by laying off workers and replacing
them with machines. This is yet another way in which we can end up
working against ourselves. The loss of jobs also has a negative impact on the
economy "through the progressive erosion of social capital: the network
of relationships of trust, dependability, and respect for rules, all of which
are indispensable for any form of civil coexistence". In other
words, "human costs always include economic costs, and economic
dysfunctions always involve human costs". To
stop investing in people, in order to gain greater short-term financial gain,
is bad business for society.

We are convinced that "man is the source, the focus and the aim of all
economic and social life". Nonetheless, once our human capacity for
contemplation and reverence is impaired, it becomes easy for the meaning of
work to be misunderstood. We need to remember that men and women have
"the capacity to improve their lot, to further their moral growth and to
develop their spiritual endowments. Work should be the setting
for this rich personal growth, where many aspects of life enter into play:
creativity, planning for the future, developing our talents, living out our
values, relating to others, giving glory to God. It follows that, in the
reality of today's global society, it is essential that "we continue to
prioritize the goal of access to steady employment for everyone", no
matter the limited interests of business and dubious economic reasoning.

In Jericho they went to the house of Rahab the prostitute.
The king of Jericho was told about this and he sent men to capture the two Israelites.
But Rahab hid the men
and told the king that they had already gone.
Rahab said to the men in their hiding place on her roof:
"I know that the Lord has given you this land.
My people are afraid of you. We have heard how the
Lord dried up the sea for your crossing
out of Egypt. We have heard how you defeated the two kings Sihon and Og. Since I have shown you
kindness
I now ask you to show kindness to my family
and spare their lives when you attack this city." The men agreed and told Rahab
to tie a scarlet cord to her window
so the Israelites would know her family were inside. Rahab helped the men go down from the
window by a rope.
The men stayed in the nearby hills for three days until it was safe to leave.
The men returned to Joshua and told how the people of Jericho
were already trembling at the thought of an Israelite attack.

126. We can also look to the great tradition of monasticism. Originally, it
was a kind of flight from the world, an escape from the decadence of the
cities. The monks sought the desert, convinced that it was the best place for
encountering the presence of God. Later, Saint Benedict of Norcia proposed
that his monks live in community, combining prayer and spiritual reading with
manual labour (ora et labora).
Seeing manual labour as spiritually meaningful proved revolutionary. Personal
growth and sanctification came to be sought in the interplay of recollection
and work. This way of experiencing
work makes us more protective and respectful of the environment; it imbues our
relationship to the world with a healthy sobriety.

This has to do not only with manual or agricultural labour but with any
activity involving a modification of existing reality, from producing a social
report to the design of a technological development. Underlying every form of
work is a concept of the relationship which we can and must have with what is
other than ourselves. Together with the awe-filled contemplation of creation
which we find in Saint Francis of Assisi, the Christian spiritual tradition
has also developed a rich and balanced understanding of the meaning of work,
as, for example, in the life of Blessed Charles de Foucauld and his followers.

My reflection on Article 9

The
Book Blog:
readings + recordings
Readings are from
Simple Bible
Deuteronomy 33-34: Before Moses died, he
blessed the twelve tribes of Israel.
Moses then went up Mount Nebo, opposite Jericho,
where the Lord showed him the whole land
that the Israelites would possess.
Moses was buried in the land of Moab.
After the people mourned Moses for 30 days,
Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom,
since Moses had laid his hands on him.
From that time there has never been a prophet like Moses,
the man who knew the Lord face to face.
Dear
God, thank you for the life of Moses. May civic and church
leaders be more like him, filled with love for you and for the people
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
27: The Lord is my light and my
help, whom shall
I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though
an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this
I long:
to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not
your face.
I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart.
Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my
help.
I will always praise you.

Timothy 6.11-13: As a man of God, avoid things like greed and
disputes. You must aim to be a saint, filled with faith
and love, patient and gentle. Fight the good fight of the faith, and win for
yourself eternal life. Be a constant witness to goodness and truth,
like Jesus who spoke up as a witness for the truth in front of Pontius
Pilate
Jesus, help me be a witness to goodness
and truth

Matthew
26.30-46: After their last meal, Jesus said to his
apostles
"Tonight all of you will desert me".
Peter said "I will never desert you".
Jesus replied "Tonight before the rooster crows,
you will deny me three times". They came to a place with olive
trees called Gethsemane.
Jesus took Peter, James and John to a part of that area
and asked them to pray with him. Jesus was overcome with sadness
and fear.
He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is
dying.
Please support me as I pray." Then he fell on his face and
prayed for about an hour:
"Father, don't let this suffering
continue. But your will be
done". He stood up and found that the
apostles were asleep.
He said to them "Couldn't you stay awake one hour to support
me?" Three times he prayed the same way.
Three times the apostles went to sleep. Then he said "Get
ready. The one who is betraying me is coming".
Jesus, please help me give more
time to prayer
