Tues July 4

Apart from a media interview and walkabout in the afternoon, I spent most of the day at the desk on prison jobs. Today I hope to visit a prison ... and please God help one more elderly person apply for bail (after being tricked on line to bring drugs to HK).

Report in Kung Kao Po re MercyHK's canteen project in Temple Street

Laudato Si:
134. Although no conclusive proof exists that GM cereals may be harmful to human beings, and in some regions their use has brought about economic growth which has helped to resolve problems, there remain a number of significant difficulties which should not be underestimated. In many places, following the introduction of these crops, productive land is concentrated in the hands of a few owners due to "the progressive disappearance of small producers, who, as a consequence of the loss of the exploited lands, are obliged to withdraw from direct production". The most vulnerable of these become temporary labourers, and many rural workers end up moving to poverty-stricken urban areas. The expansion of these crops has the effect of destroying the complex network of ecosystems, diminishing the diversity of production and affecting regional economies, now and in the future. In various countries, we see an expansion of oligopolies for the production of cereals and other products needed for their cultivation. This dependency would be aggravated were the production of infertile seeds to be considered; the effect would be to force farmers to purchase them from larger producers.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Joshua 7: The Lord had told the Israelites not to keep anything for themselves when they captured Jericho. But one man disobeyed the Lord and secretly kept some of the spoils. As a result of that man's disobedience, the Israelites were defeated in battle when they attacked the town of Ai. The disobedient man's identity was found by drawing of the lot:  of the 12 tribes, one was chosen, the tribe of Judah; of the tribe of Judah, one clan was chosen, that of Zerah; of the families of Zerah, one was chosen, that of Zabdi; of the men of Zabdi, one was chosen, Achan. Achan admitted his guilt.
He and his whole family were then stoned to death and a great cairn built over them. All of Achan's possessions were burnt.
Dear Lord, please don't let me disobey you
My recording of this reading

Psalms 38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.
Lord, help us understand the meaning of life

Listen

2 Timothy 3.12-16: Anyone who tries to live a sincere Christian life will be persecuted. Stay faithful to what you have been taught and know to be true.
Remember who your teachers were, and how, ever since you were a child, you have known the Scriptures. From the Scriptures you can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and can be used for teaching, for refuting error, for guiding people's lives and teaching them to be holy

Jesus, please give all Christians, especially pastors, a passion for the Scriptures

Listen

Matthew 27.45-54: Jesus was put on the cross about 9am. From about noon until 3pm there was darkness over all the land. About 3pm Jesus cried out the words of Psalm 22: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" A little while later he again cried out in a loud voice. Then he died. At that moment the holy curtain in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom,  and there was a violent earthquake. The Roman soldiers were terrified. Their leader called out "Truly this was a son of God".
Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

Listen

Reflection: Sometimes we read reports of how someone died to save someone else .... like some years ago when a father pushed his son to safety while crossing a road in Sham Shui Po when a drunken truck driver went through a red light ... the boy was injured, the father died. How grateful that boy must be every day of his life for what his father did. How grateful we must be every day of our lives to Jesus for dying for us.

Mon July 3

Yesterday I had the 8.30am and 10am Cantonese Masses at Yau Ma Tei parish, then 12 noon English Mass for special domestic helpers at the Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street. Then after lunch with the domestic workers at the Centre and a recovering nap at my nearby home I spent time back at the Centre on prison jobs. I am hoping to visit a prison tomorrow

A new friend in Heaven ....taught me at school, was my seminary Rector, was my provincial, was my (and many other people's) wise counsellor for  decades: Fr Austin Cooper O.M.I, O.A. who went home to Heaven yesterday morning.

Laudato Si:
133. It is difficult to make a general judgement about genetic modification (GM), whether vegetable or animal, medical or agricultural, since these vary greatly among themselves and call for specific considerations. The risks involved are not always due to the techniques used, but rather to their improper or excessive application. Genetic mutations, in fact, have often been, and continue to be, caused by nature itself. Nor are mutations caused by human intervention a modern phenomenon. The domestication of animals, the crossbreeding of species and other older and universally accepted practices can be mentioned as examples. We need but recall that scientific developments in GM cereals began with the observation of natural bacteria which spontaneously modified plant genomes. In nature, however, this process is slow and cannot be compared to the fast pace induced by contemporary technological advances, even when the latter build upon several centuries of scientific progress

For Feast of St Thomas
Ephesians 2.19-22:

In God's Church you are not foreigners. You are citizens. You are part of a building that has the apostles and prophets for its base. Christ Jesus himself is the foundation stone. You are being built into a house where God lives
Jesus, be the foundation stone of my life

Psalm 117: O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

John 20.21-29 (a): That same Sunday evening, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples had gathered, for fear of the religious leaders. But Jesus appeared and stood before them, saying "Peace be with you". He showed them his hands and his side and said "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you". Then he breathed on them, saying "Receive the Holy Spirit". Thomas, one of the 12 apostles, was not there that night. When the other disciples said they had seen the Lord, he replied "Unless I see and touch his wounded body, I refuse to believe"
Recording

John 20.21-29 (b): Eight days later, the group was again in the same house, with the doors locked. This time Thomas was with them. Jesus again appeared and stood before them saying "Peace be with you". Then he said to Thomas "Put your hand into my side. Doubt no longer, but believe". Thomas replied "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said "You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen me and yet believe"
Jesus, my Lord and my God, I believe in you. Help me live and grow and die in your friendship
Recording

Reflection on the above readings: Pope Francis has said that each time we help a poor person, we lovingly touch Jesus' wounded side ... like Thomas

Sun July 2

I spent much of yesterday looking after Patrick (not real name), an elderly drug mule from overseas who was released on bail last Friday. Like having a baby ... much attention required! And before this one is weaned there might be two more to take care of very soon!?!  Patrick's arrest details are here (...bed sheets!). Patrick had been tricked on line. Thank you again to all the people who prayed for his release on bail ... a miracle.

Laudato Si:
132. This, then, is the correct framework for any reflection concerning human intervention on plants and animals, which at present includes genetic manipulation by biotechnology for the sake of exploiting the potential present in material reality. The respect owed by faith to reason calls for close attention to what the biological sciences, through research uninfluenced by economic interests, can teach us about biological structures, their possibilities and their mutations. Any legitimate intervention will act on nature only in order "to favour its development in its own line, that of creation, as intended by God".

c.f. readings for Sunday 13

2 Kings 4: A poor  widow whose husband had been a prophet asked Elisha for help when a creditor demanded her two sons as slaves. All she had was a small pot of oil, not enough to pay her debts. Elisha told her to get many jars, and start pouring oil from the pot into the jars. As she and her sons did this, the oil did not run out. Elisha told her to sell the oil to pay off her debts. At another time Elisha  brought back to life a dead child. He also once brought about a miraculous multiplication of bread.
Dear God,  you once worked miracles by the prayers of Elisha. Please let  miracles be done in our day.

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Romans 6.3-11: When we were baptized, two things happened - 1: We went into Jesus' tomb and joined him in death. We died. - 2: We rose from the dead with Jesus. We came back to life. This dying and rising means we have died to sin, and risen to a new life. We died to an old life, and we came back to a new life. We have been re-born, born again.
Jesus, please help me leave my old life behind. Help me live a new life with you

 Recording

Matthew 10.17-42: Jesus said to his apostles "Because you follow me and speak my message, therefore you will be arrested and put in prison. But don't worry about what to say for your defense. What to say will be given you by the Holy Spirit. Boldly proclaim my message and do not be afraid of persecution. Take up your cross and follow me. Anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me."
Jesus, please give me more courage

Joshua 6: The Lord said to Joshua: "I am delivering Jericho and its king into your hands. Get your soldiers to march around Jericho. Do this for 6 days, marching with the Sacred Chest with 7 trumpets in front of it. On the 7th day, march around the city 7 times, and then let the whole people give a mighty war cry." The soldiers and people did this, and when the war cry was made, the walls of Jericho fell down. The Israelites then entered the town and captured it. They spared the lives of Rahab the prostitute and her family
Dear Lord, long ago you caused the walls of Jericho to fall. Please in our day cause walls of prejudice and corruption to fall

Psalm 35-37: O Lord, please save me from people who slander me, you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious, you in whose light we see light. Lord, please deepen our trust in you, especially in time of trouble

2 Timothy 3.2-5:
For sure, some people will be self-centered and greedy; disobedient and ungrateful to parents; heartless, difficult to get along with; slanderers, profligates and enemies of everything that is good. They will keep up the outward appearance of religion, but will have rejected its inner power. Have nothing to do with people like that
Jesus, may my faith be real, not just something external

Listen

Matthew 27.32-44: As Jesus was taken to the place of crucifixion, a man name Simon, from Cyrene, was made to carry Jesus' cross. Jesus was then nailed to the cross and hung on the cross. Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Above Jesus' head was a sign with the charge against him: "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews". People passing by that place made fun of Jesus. So did the religious leaders. They mocked and taunted him.
Jesus on the Cross, thank you for suffering so much for the salvation of the world

Feast of St Peter & St Paul

At the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan yesterday morning there was a MercyHK staff meeting ....one special item on the agenda being our coming canteen at 191 Temple Street.

Then in the afternoon a kind volunteer came to the centre to take over the job of processing mail/messages between prisoners and overseas families. Volunteer will work from home. After which I took part in a Voice for Prisoners zoom meeting from my home ....before going back to the Dr Jesus Centre where there was a meeting for Nepal drug addicts at which social workers from Caritas were special guests. Earlier in the afternoon the Caritas team attended our weekly meeting for local drug addicts at our Nathan Road centre.

c.f. readings for Feast of Peter & Paul

Acts 12.1-17: About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him.
Jesus, please help Christians who are in prison for their faith

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

2 Timothy 4.6-8:
As for me, my life of service to the Lord is nearly over. I have fought the good fight to the end. I have run the race to the finish. I have kept the faith. The Lord will soon give me the best of all prizes: eternal life in heaven. He will give it not only to me, but to everyone who has loved him sincerely in this life.
Jesus, help me keep running to the finish line

Recording

Matthew 16.13-20: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Jesus then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. So I now say to you: you are Peter ('the rock') and on this rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom."
Jesus, Son of God,  please help the church to continue your work on earth

Laudato Si:
131. Here I would recall the balanced position of Saint John Paul II, who stressed the benefits of scientific and technological progress as evidence of "the nobility of the human vocation to participate responsibly in God's creative action", while also noting that "we cannot interfere in one area of the ecosystem without paying due attention to the consequences of such interference in other areas". He made it clear that the Church values the benefits which result "from the study and applications of molecular biology, supplemented by other disciplines such as genetics, and its technological application in agriculture and industry". But he also pointed out that this should not lead to "indiscriminate genetic manipulation" which ignores the negative effects of such interventions. Human creativity cannot be suppressed. If an artist cannot be stopped from using his or her creativity, neither should those who possess particular gifts for the advancement of science and technology be prevented from using their God-given talents for the service of others. We need constantly to rethink the goals, effects, overall context and ethical limits of this human activity, which is a form of power involving considerable risks.

Joshua 5:  The kings of the Jordan area heard that the Lord had dried up the Jordan's waters to let the Israelites cross over. The kings became very afraid of the Israelites. At Gilgal near the Jordan the Lord instructed Joshua that all un-circumcised men should be circumcised. It was at Gilgal that the Israelites kept the Passover Feast and tasted the produce of the land. As soon as the Israelites tasted the produce of the land, the manna stopped falling.

Psalm 33:
Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious love

2 Timothy 2.14-25: Remind everyone to avoid useless debates and discussions. These cause scandal and loss of faith. Be available for the Master to use you for any good work. Focus on goodness, faith, love and peace. Avoid futile speculations which only lead to quarrels. A servant of the Lord is not to engage in quarrels, but should be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient. Be gentle with anyone you have to correct
Jesus, please help me avoid useless discussions and arguments

Matthew 27.27-31: After the Roman soldiers scourged Jesus, they made fun of him: they put a red cloak on him, they made a crown out of thorns, they put a reed in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him saying "Hail, king of the Jews". They spat on him. They took the reed and hit him with it. When they had finished making fun of him, they dressed him  in his own clothes and led him away to crucify him.
