Should
we worry about dry eyes? (... from too much screen time ...)
Laudato
Si:
160. What kind of world do we want to
leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up? This
question not only concerns the environment in isolation; the issue cannot be
approached piecemeal. When we ask ourselves what kind of world we want to
leave behind, we think in the first place of its general direction, its
meaning and its values. Unless we
struggle with these deeper issues, I do not believe that our concern for
ecology will produce significant results. But if these issues are
courageously faced, we are led inexorably to ask other pointed questions: What
is the purpose of our life in this world? Why are we here? What is the goal of
our work and all our efforts? What need does the earth have of us? It is no
longer enough, then, simply to state that we should be concerned for future
generations. We need to see that what is at stake is our own dignity. Leaving
an inhabitable planet to future generations is, first and foremost, up to us.
The issue is one which dramatically affects us, for it has to do with the
ultimate meaning of our earthly sojourn.

Ruth
1: In the days of the
judges, there was famine in the land.
Because of the famine, a man from Bethlehem named Elimelech moved to Moab.
Elimelech took with him
his wife Naomi and his two sons.
Elimelech died.
The two sons married Moabite women: Orpah and Ruth.
But then the two sons also died. Naomi was
heart-broken. She had lost her husband and two sons. She decided to return
to Bethlehem
and told her daughters-in-law to go back to their own homes. Orpah went back to her
people.
But Ruth with great loyalty and love chose to go with Naomi. Ruth said:
"Wherever you go, I will go. Wherever you live, I will live.
Your people shall be my people.
Your God shall be my God.
Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried."
Dear God, in time of trouble, please help people to be loyal and kind to each other

86: Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer
for I am poor and needy.
O Lord, you are good and forgiving,
full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you
and glorify your name, O Lord,
you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart
so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my
heart
for your love to me has been great. O give your strength to your servant

Greetings to believers scattered around the world. You will always have difficulties and things

Mark
5.21-43:
A prayer hall official, Jairus, fell at
Jesus' feet and pleaded "My little daughter is dying. Please come and
lay your hands on her and save her life". While Jesus was on the way to
Jairus' home,
people arrived and told Jairus "Your daughter is dead. No need
to trouble the Master any further". Jesus heard this and said to Jairus "Do
not be afraid. Just have faith". Jesus allowed only Peter, James and
John to go with him. At Jairus' home, everyone was weeping and
wailing.
Jesus said to them "Why all this crying? The child is not dead, but
asleep". Everyone laughed at him.
So he got them all to leave. Then taking the girl's parents and his 3
companions, he went to the place where the child was lying. Taking the girl by the hand he said to her
"Little girl, I tell you to get up". The little girl got up at
once. She was 12 years old.

159. The
notion of the common good also extends to future generations. The global
economic crises have made painfully obvious the detrimental effects of
disregarding our common destiny, which cannot exclude those who come after us.
We can no longer speak of sustainable development apart from intergenerational
solidarity. Once we start to think
about the kind of world we are leaving to future generations, we look at
things differently; we realize that the world is a gift which we have
freely received and must share with others. Since the world has been given to
us, we can no longer view reality in a purely utilitarian way, in which
efficiency and productivity are entirely geared to our individual benefit.
Intergenerational solidarity is not optional, but rather a basic question of
justice, since the world we have received also belongs to those who will
follow us. The Portuguese bishops have called upon us to acknowledge this
obligation of justice: "The environment is part of a logic of
receptivity. It is on loan to each generation, which must then hand it on to
the next". An integral ecology is marked by this broader vision.

should get rid of everything that slows us down. Keep focusing on Jesus. He is running beside

5. 25-34: A large crowd gathered around Jesus near the
side of the Sea of Galilee. In the crowd was a woman who had suffered from
bleeding for 12 years. She had spent all her money on doctors, but
they had been unable to help her. She had heard about Jesus. She came up behind
him in the crowd and touched his cloak. "If I can touch even his
clothes, I will be healed" she said to herself. As soon as she touched Jesus' cloak, the
source of the bleeding dried up at once. Aware that power had gone out
from him, Jesus turned round and said "Who touched me?" The woman fell at his feet and told her story.
Jesus said "My daughter, your faith has restored you to health. Go in
peace and be free from your illness".

158. In the present condition of global
society, where injustices abound and growing numbers of people are deprived of
basic human rights and considered expendable, the principle of the common good
immediately becomes, logically and inevitably, a
summons to solidarity and a preferential option for the poorest of our
brothers and sisters. This option entails recognizing the implications
of the universal destination of the world's goods, but, as I mentioned in the
Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, it demands before all else
an appreciation of the immense dignity of the poor in the light of our deepest
convictions as believers. We need only look around us to see that, today, this
option is in fact an ethical imperative essential for effectively attaining
the common good.

evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I
may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble,
your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord,
keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of
gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The
unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.

which leavens flour. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure

157. Underlying the principle of the
common good is respect for the human person as such, endowed with basic and
inalienable rights ordered to his or her integral development. It has also to
do with the overall welfare of society and the development of a variety of
intermediate groups, applying the principle of subsidiarity. Outstanding among
those groups is the family, as the basic cell of society. Finally, the common
good calls for social peace, the stability and security provided by a certain
order which cannot be achieved without particular concern for distributive
justice; whenever this is violated, violence always ensues. Society
as a whole, and the state in particular, are obliged to defend and promote the
common good.

Feast of Sts Martha, Mary & Lazarus
Luke
10.38-42: Jesus
came to a village, and a
woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She
had a
sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him
speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, "Lord,
do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself?
Please tell her to help me." But the Lord answered: "Martha,
Martha," he said "you worry and fret about so many things, and yet
few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it
is not to be taken from her."

John
11.1-44: Lazarus
and his sisters Mary and Martha lived in the village
of Bethany. When Lazarus became very sick, the sisters sent a message to Jesus
"Lord, your dear friend is very sick". By the time Jesus and his
disciples arrived in Bethany, Lazarus was dead and buried for 4 days. Martha
said to Jesus "If you had been here, my brother would not have died".
Jesus replied "I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in
me, he will have life after death". Jesus said to Mary and Martha
"Where have you put him?" Jesus cried as he went to the tomb.
The tomb was a cave with a stone at the entrance. Jesus said "Take the
stone away". Then he called out in a loud voice "Lazarus, come
out!" The dead man came out, wrapped in burial clothes. Jesus said
"Unwrap him and let him go free".

John
12.1-8: Six days
before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, for a dinner at the home of Lazarus,
Mary and Martha. Mary put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet. Then she
wiped his feet with her hair. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to
betray Jesus, said "Why wasn't this ointment sold and the money given to
the poor?" He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because
he was a thief. He was in charge of the moneybag and would steal from it.
Jesus replied "Leave her alone. She is anticipating and honoring my
burial. Besides, the poor will always be with you. But I will soon be
gone"
Jesus, please help people in charge of money not to steal

John 12.9-11: When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus[ was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. Judges 16: Samson went to Gaza and
entered the house of a prostitute.
The men of Gaza tried to capture Samson
but he eluded them. Samson
then fell in love with a woman called Delilah.
The Philistine leaders pressured Delilah to find out the secret of Samson's great strength.
Day
after day Delilah pestered Samson
until he told her his secret:
"A razor has never touched my head,
because I have been specially dedicated to God from my birth.
If my hair is cut, I will lose my strength." Delilah
then cut Samson's hair while he was asleep
and called the Philistines to capture him. The
Philistines bound Samson, put out his eyes
and chained him in a prison in Gaza.
But in prison, Samson's hair began to grow again. The
Philistines held a special ceremony in a large building
to celebrate the capture of Samson. They
paraded Samson at the ceremony
and then made him stand between two pillars. Samson
prayed to God for strength one more time
and the Lord heard his prayer. He
then used his great strength
to pull down the main pillars supporting the building. In
this way, at his death, Samson killed more Philistines than before he went to prison.

Human ecology also implies another profound reality: the relationship between
human life and the moral law, which is inscribed in our nature and is
necessary for the creation of a more dignified environment. Pope Benedict XVI
spoke of an "ecology of man", based on the fact that "man too
has a nature that he must respect and that he cannot manipulate at will". It
is enough to recognize that our body itself establishes us in a direct
relationship with the environment and with other living beings. The acceptance
of our bodies as God's gift is vital for welcoming and accepting the entire
world as a gift from the Father and our common home, whereas thinking that we
enjoy absolute power over our own bodies turns, often subtly, into thinking
that we enjoy absolute power over creation. Learning
to accept our body, to care for it and to respect its fullest meaning, is an
essential element of any genuine human ecology. Also, valuing one's own
body in its femininity or masculinity is necessary if I am going to be able to
recognize myself in an encounter with someone who is different. In this way we
can joyfully accept the specific gifts of another man or woman, the work of
God the Creator, and find mutual enrichment. It is not a healthy attitude
which would seek "to cancel out sexual difference because it no longer
knows how to confront it".

154. Respect for our dignity as human
beings often jars with the chaotic realities that people have to endure in
city life. Yet this should not make us overlook the
abandonment and neglect also experienced by some rural populations
which lack access to essential services and where some workers are reduced to
conditions of servitude, without rights or even the hope of a more dignified
life.

Sirach
44-50: It is good to remember
the famous people in history who had a special love for God. Remembering
their faith and their love for God will give us courage for our daily lives.
They were human and made mistakes, yet they persevered in serving the Lord.
People like Abraham, Moses, David. Let us try to imitate their faith and
courage.
Lord, please give me courage to live each day as I should
