Imitating Pope Francis

Tues Sep 5

Thank you Jesus for blessing trip to Mongolia by Pope Francis and pilgrims from HK.  And ... I can see MercyHK's Lucia Leung and Deacon Edwin Ng in this SCMP report (at 1.21)!

I live in Kowloon. Sometimes I can go for weeks, even months, without making a trip across/under the harbour to HK Island. But yesterday I made 2 trips: one in the morning to attend a meeting concerning asylum seekers, and then late afternoon to hand deliver a mitigation letter to a legal firm for a High Court case on Friday

Laudato Si:
190. Here too, it should always be kept in mind that "environmental protection cannot be assured solely on the basis of financial calculations of costs and benefits. The environment is one of those goods that cannot be adequately safeguarded or promoted by market forces". Once more, we need to reject a magical conception of the market, which would suggest that problems can be solved simply by an increase in the profits of companies or individuals. Is it realistic to hope that those who are obsessed with maximizing profits will stop to reflect on the environmental damage which they will leave behind for future generations? Where profits alone count, there can be no thinking about the rhythms of nature, its phases of decay and regeneration, or the complexity of ecosystems which may be gravely upset by human intervention. Moreover, biodiversity is considered at most a deposit of economic resources available for exploitation, with no serious thought for the real value of things, their significance for persons and cultures, or the concerns and needs of the poor.

Readings are from Simple Bible

2 Samuel 12: The Lord sent the prophet Nathan to David. Nathan said: "Why did you do what is displeasing to the Lord?" David replied: "I have sinned against the Lord." Nathan said: "The Lord forgives you, but because of your sin, the child will die." After the child died, Bathsheba conceived another son by David, whom she named Solomon. The Lord specially blessed Solomon.
"Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence"
(David's prayer in Psalm 51)

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

1 John 3.1-3: Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us by letting us be called God's children. And God's love has even more in store for us in the future: we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. This is why we must try to live good lives. We must try to be as good as Christ
Jesus, please help me be more like you

Listen

Mark 12.41-44: Jesus sat down in the Temple area and noticed people putting money into a donation box to help the poor. Many rich people put in a lot of money. A poor widow put in two small coins. Jesus said to his disciples "That poor widow has donated more than all the other people, for they put in money they had left over, but she put in the only money she had"
Jesus, please make me more generous in helping poor people

You! We) ...with a special one last week when the super typhoon's centre was only 30k from HK: "the typhoon will be rather close"!

Mon Sep 4

Three days ago (see below, Sep 1) I said how MercyHK social worker Lucia Leung - on way to and in Mongolia - had photos of herself with Cardinal Tong, Bishop Chow, Bishop Lee ... three bishops in one day.... and I asked "I wonder if she will get a photo of herself with the Pope?". Well, check this from yesterday!

And another very special photo: Pope holding hands of HK's Cardinal John Tong and Bishop Stephen Chow ... with message for Catholics in China:

I keep hoping and praying Pope Francis will stopover in Beijing on way back to Rome from Mongolia. Maybe his plane might need some special attention? ....so he can visit grave of Matteo Ricci!

Laudato Si:
189. Politics must not be subject to the economy, nor should the economy be subject to the dictates of an efficiency-driven paradigm of technocracy. Today, in view of the common good, there is urgent need for politics and economics to enter into a frank dialogue in the service of life, especially human life. Saving banks at any cost, making the public pay the price, foregoing a firm commitment to reviewing and reforming the entire system, only reaffirms the absolute power of a financial system, a power which has no future and will only give rise to new crises after a slow, costly and only apparent recovery. The financial crisis of 2007-08 provided an opportunity to develop a new economy, more attentive to ethical principles, and new ways of regulating speculative financial practices and virtual wealth. But the response to the crisis did not include rethinking the outdated criteria which continue to rule the world. Production is not always rational, and is usually tied to economic variables which assign to products a value that does not necessarily correspond to their real worth. This frequently leads to an overproduction of some commodities, with unnecessary impact on the environment and with negative results on regional economies. The financial bubble also tends to be a productive bubble. The problem of the real economy is not confronted with vigour, yet it is the real economy which makes diversification and improvement in production possible, helps companies to function well, and enables small and medium businesses to develop and create employment.

2 Samuel 10-11: The Ammonites went to war with the Israelites, but David led the Israelites to victory. During a further war with the Ammonites, David stayed in Jerusalem and did not go to the battle. While in Jerusalem, he made love to Bathsheba the wife of Uriah who conceived and sent word to David, "I am with child." David recalled Uriah to Jerusalem and tried to get him to sleep with his wife. But Uriah loyally observed the custom of the time
and refrained from marital relations since he was a soldier at war. David then arranged for Uriah to be killed in battle by having him stationed in a defenceless position. After a time of mourning for Uriah, Bathsheba became David's wife and bore him a son. The Lord was displeased with David.

Dear God, help us not to displease you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 114-115: When Israel came out of Egypt, Jacob's descendents from an alien people, Judah became the Lord's temple, Israel became his kingdom. Descendents of Israel, trust in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. To you may the Lord grant increase, to you and all your children. May you be blessed by the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.
Thank you, Lord, for all your blessings

1 John 2.9-16: Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates their brother is still in the dark. Do not love the ungodly values of this world generated by the sensual body, the lustful eye and a pride in possessions. Such things do not come from God
Jesus, please help me avoid worldly values

Listen

Mark 12.38-40: Jesus told the people to beware of religious leaders who like to walk about in long robes, who like to be greeted obsequiously in the market places, who like to take the places of honor at prayer halls and banquets, who steal the property of widows, while making a show of lengthy prayers
Jesus, help religious leaders to be good people

c.f. readings for Sunday 22
Jeremiah 18-20:
Some officials decided to get rid of Jeremiah. They did not want to listen to his message any more. "Come on,", they said, "let us make a case against him." Jeremiah prayed to God: "Lord, you know that people are plotting against me. Please help me and keep me safe." One of the Temple priests had Jeremiah beaten and put in stocks for a day near the Temple. Again Jeremiah prayed to God: "You have seduced me, Lord. You have told me to proclaim a harsh message for the people. This has made me a laughing-stock. Being your messenger has caused me insult  all the day long. At one stage I even thought of not speaking your message any more. But then I felt a fire burning in my heart. I could not stop thinking of you. I just had to speak your message."
Lord,  please increase my love for you. Please give me more courage to speak your message to my family, friends and people I meet

My recording of this reading

Psalms 61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

Listen

Romans 12.1-2: I beg you, trust in God's mercy, and worship him in a spiritual way, not just in an external way. Offer your whole life to him as a holy sacrifice. Do not blindly follow the fashions of the world. Instead, let your behavior change, fashioned by your enlightened mind. This is the way to discover the will of God, the way to know what God wants us to do.
Jesus, help me give more time to things that are important, less time to things not so important

 Listen

Matthew 16.21-28: Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life. Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

 Listen

 Reflection on the above readings:

Never once did Jesus say to a sick person "your illness is your cross ... go and carry it".  Every time someone asked for healing, Jesus healed them or those for whom they asked healing. So what is our cross? Jeremiah gives the answer: it's ridicule, persecution for being a Christian ....for upholding Christian values ... like marriage (... just ask John the Baptist!)

Laudato Si:
188. There are certain environmental issues where it is not easy to achieve a broad consensus. Here I would state once more that the Church does not presume to settle scientific questions or to replace politics. But I am concerned to encourage an honest and open debate so that particular interests or ideologies will not prejudice the common good.

2 Samuel 8-9: Wherever David went, the Lord gave him success and victory. David  showed kindness to Saul's family. Meribbaal, son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul was crippled in both feet. David restored Saul's property to Meribbaal and arranged for Meribbaal to eat at the royal table each day. Lord, help us show kindness to people who treat us badly

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly,

2 Samuel 7:  After David settled into his palace and the land enjoyed peace, David thought about building a temple for the Lord. Then through the prophet Nathan the Lord told David: " I will establish your dynasty for ever. But it will be your son, not yourself, who will build a temple for me." David praised God: "Who am I, Lord, and what is my House, that you have helped me so much and promised me so much? May my House continue in your presence for ever. May you bless my House forever."

Psalm 112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord, who take delight in his commands. The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for others. Laudato Si:
187. This does not mean being opposed to any technological innovations which can bring about an improvement in the quality of life. But it does mean that profit cannot be the sole criterion to be taken into account, and that, when significant new information comes to light, a reassessment should be made, with the involvement of all interested parties. The outcome may be a decision not to proceed with a given project, to modify it or to consider alternative proposals.

Anti-scam project: BROKEN HEARTS, EMPTY ACCOUNTS

Laudato Si:
186. The Rio Declaration of 1992 states that "where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a pretext for postponing cost-effective measures" which prevent environmental degradation. This precautionary principle makes it possible to protect those who are most vulnerable and whose ability to defend their interests and to assemble incontrovertible evidence is limited. If objective information suggests that serious and irreversible damage may result, a project should be halted or modified, even in the absence of indisputable proof. Here the burden of proof is effectively reversed, since in such cases objective and conclusive demonstrations will have to be brought forward to demonstrate that the proposed activity will not cause serious harm to the environment or to those who inhabit it.

2 Peter 1.20 - 3.18We must be careful to understand Scripture according to God's mind. We are not free to make up our own interpretations as we like.  In the past there were false prophets. So there will always be false prophets and teachers who twist the truth to suit their own tastes and corrupt behavior. They will have much to answer for when the Day of the Lord comes. Our brother Paul has written to you about this issue. Sometimes his writing is not easy to understand, and is distorted by false teachers. Avoid false teaching. Stand firm in the truth. Go on growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. To him be glory, in time and in eternity. Amen

Mark 10.46-52: As Jesus was leaving Jericho on his way to Jerusalem, many people followed him along the road. Sitting by the road was a man  who had become blind. Some people tried to stop him from calling out, but he shouted even more loudly "Son of David, have pity on me". Jesus stopped and said to him "What do you want me to do for you?" He replied "Lord, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Go, your faith has saved you". Immediately his sight returned, and he followed Jesus along the road
