Yesterday I was at nearby West Kowloon Court for a "mention" hearing of a bail case for whom I am surety. Today I'm due to be at High Court for another bail application ...another surety case. Thank you for a prayer for this latest case.

Yesterday during breakfast I watched this encouraging talk: The molecular love story that could help power the world

Laudato Si:
196. What happens with politics? Let us keep in mind the principle of subsidiarity, which grants freedom to develop the capabilities present at every level of society, while also demanding a greater sense of responsibility for the common good from those who wield greater power. Today, it is the case that some economic sectors exercise more power than states themselves. But economics without politics cannot be justified, since this would make it impossible to favour other ways of handling the various aspects of the present crisis. The mindset which leaves no room for sincere concern for the environment is the same mindset which lacks concern for the inclusion of the most vulnerable members of society. For "the current model, with its emphasis on success and self-reliance, does not appear to favour an investment in efforts to help the slow, the weak or the less talented to find opportunities in life"

1 Kings 2: Before King David died, he encouraged his son Solomon to love the Lord with all his heart and soul. Solomon executed his main enemies and rivals, including Adonijah who had again plotted to become king. Solomon then was secure and safe as king.
Dear God, thank you for the life of David who, despite his faults, loved you with all his heart

My recording of this reading

Psalm 122: I rejoiced when I heard them say "Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. For the peace of Jerusalem pray "Peace be to your homes." For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good.
Lord, may your peace be in our hearts and homes

3 John: From the Elder to my dear friend Gaius. People have told me of your faithfulness to the truth. It is always a great joy for me when I hear that my children are living according to the truth. Thank you for your hospitality to believers who travel to spread the Good News. Such people deserve whatever support we can give them
Jesus, please bless people who travel to spread the Good News

Mark 14.43-52: While Jesus was still speaking, Judas arrived. Judas had with him a large crowd of men with swords and clubs, sent by the religious leaders. Judas had told these men "The one I kiss is the man. Take him". So Judas went  to Jesus and said  "Teacher" and kissed him. The men  then seized Jesus. Jesus said to them "Am I a robber that you needed to capture me with swords and clubs?  Day after day I was openly teaching in the Temple". All the apostles then deserted him and ran away

MercyHK social worker Lucia Leung is featured in this Sunday Examiner report about the pilgrimage of HK Catholics to Mongolia for Pope's visit (In the photo, Lucia is holding HK flag, behind cardinals!)

Yesterday afternoon I attended the annual meeting of a wonderful group of people who belong to the Voice for Prisoners prison visit group ..... people from all walks of life, including domestic helpers who give up their one holiday of the week (Sunday) to visit prisoners. God bless the whole group!

Good to know that HK is decreasing its reliance on coal for electricity. The electricity sector contributes 60.4% of Hong Kong's total greenhouse gas emissions. Only about 25% of HK's electricity still comes from coal (... coal from Australia where concerned people are trying to stop coal production since it does so much harm to the planet)

Laudato Si:
195. The principle of the maximization of profits, frequently isolated from other considerations, reflects a misunderstanding of the very concept of the economy. As long as production is increased, little concern is given to whether it is at the cost of future resources or the health of the environment; as long as the clearing of a forest increases production, no one calculates the losses entailed in the desertification of the land, the harm done to biodiversity or the increased pollution. In a word, businesses profit by calculating and paying only a fraction of the costs involved. Yet only when "the economic and social costs of using up shared environmental resources are recognized with transparency and fully borne by those who incur them, not by other peoples or future generations", can those actions be considered ethical. An instrumental way of reasoning, which provides a purely static analysis of realities in the service of present needs, is at work whether resources are allocated by the market or by state central planning.

1 Kings 1: When King David was very old and near the end of his life, Absalom's brother Adonijah plotted to become king. The prophet Nathan therefore advised Bathsheba to go to David and remind him that he had promised to let Bathsheba's son Solomon become king. David then summoned the priests and royal guards and ordered them and Nathan to anoint Solomon as king
Dear God, please give the world good leaders

Psalm 120-121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever
Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night

2 John: In our life of truth and love, we have grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father. I write not to give you any new commandment, but the one we were given at the beginning: let us love one another; let us live a life of love. Keep to what Jesus taught. Don't follow anyone who changes what Jesus taught

Mark 14.26-42: After the meal, Jesus said to his apostles "Tonight all of you will desert me". Peter said "I will never desert you". Jesus replied "Tonight before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". They came to a place with olive trees called Gethsemane. Jesus asked Peter, James and John to pray with him. Jesus was overcome with sadness and fear. He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is dying. Please support me as I pray". Then he fell on his face and prayed for about an hour: "Father, don't let this suffering continue. But your will be done". He stood up and found that the apostles were asleep. He said to them "Couldn't you stay awake one hour to support me?" Three times he prayed the same way. Three times the apostles went to sleep. Then he said "Get ready. The one who is betraying me is coming"

Sun Sep 10

Yesterday at MercyHK's soon-to-be-opened canteen at 191 Temple Street, Jordan, there was much activity as the staff and equipment got to know each other! First group of 4 staff, all men, used to be in prison and are quite excited about the prospect of a special job in a special project. My mischievous mind even thought of putting a sign on the front window (... I'm only joking...): STAFF WANTED; MUST HAVE CRIMINAL RECORD!

Laudato Si:
194. For new models of progress to arise, there is a need to change "models of global development"; this will entail a responsible reflection on “the meaning of the economy and its goals with an eye to correcting its malfunctions and misapplications". It is not enough to balance, in the medium term, the protection of nature with financial gain, or the preservation of the environment with progress. Halfway measures simply delay the inevitable disaster. Put simply, it is a matter of redefining our notion of progress. A technological and economic development which does not leave in its wake a better world and an integrally higher quality of life cannot be considered progress. Frequently, in fact, people's quality of life actually diminishes - by the deterioration of the environment, the low quality of food or the depletion of resources - in the midst of economic growth. In this context, talk of sustainable growth usually becomes a way of distracting attention and offering excuses. It absorbs the language and values of ecology into the categories of finance and technocracy, and the social and environmental responsibility of businesses often gets reduced to a series of marketing and image-enhancing measures.

c.f. readings for Sunday 23
Ezekiel 33-34:
God told Ezekiel to say this to Israel's leaders: "Punishment is coming for you shepherds who have fed yourselves but not looked after the sheep. You have failed to make the weak sheep strong, or to care for the sick ones. You have failed to bring back stray sheep or look for lost sheep. On the contrary, you have been cruel to the sheep and treated them badly. Therefore I will look after my flock myself. I will rescue them from where they have been scattered. I will look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the injured, and make the weak strong. I will also judge the sheep themselves. I will judge the fat sheep which have bullied the weak sheep. I will raise up a special shepherd and put him in charge of all my sheep."
Lord, please help all leaders care for their people, like Jesus the Good Shepherd

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Romans 13.8-9: Avoid getting into debt, except the debt of love we owe each other. Love other people as you should, and you will keep all the commandments. All the commandments concerning other people - You shall not commit adultery, you shall not kill, you shall not steal etc - are summed up in the words "You must care about your neighbor as much as you care about yourself"
Jesus, help me care about others as much as I care about myself

Matthew 18.15-20:

Jesus said to his disciples: "If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you: the evidence of two or three witnesses is required to sustain any charge. But if he refuses to listen to these, report it to the community; and if he refuses to listen to the community, treat him like a pagan or a tax collector.  I tell you solemnly, whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven. I tell you solemnly once again, if two of you on earth agree to ask anything at all, it will be granted to you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them."

Laudato Si:
193. In any event, if in some cases sustainable development were to involve new forms of growth, then in other cases, given the insatiable and irresponsible growth produced over many decades, we need also to think of containing growth by setting some reasonable limits and even retracing our steps before it is too late. We know how unsustainable is the behaviour of those who constantly consume and destroy, while others are not yet able to live in a way worthy of their human dignity. That is why the time has come to accept decreased growth in some parts of the world, in order to provide resources for other places to experience healthy growth. Benedict XVI has said that "technologically advanced societies must be prepared to encourage more sober lifestyles, while reducing their energy consumption and improving its efficiency"

2 Samuel 16-24: When David was living in exile, some people helped him, some people insulted him. To insult his father and to claim the kingship Absalom publicly had sex with his father's concubines. Gradually David was able to re-build his army and his army defeated Absalom's soldiers in battle. In that battle, Absalom died and David mourned his death for a long time. Eventually David was able to become king of all Israel again

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

1 John 4.20 - 5.13: Anyone who says "I love God" but hates his brother, is a liar. A man who does not love the brother he can see cannot love God whom he has never seen. Who can overcome the world? Fri Sep 8
Birthday of Jesus' dear mother Mary

At the High Court yesterday one of my two bail applications was successful, the other unsuccessful.

A couple of days ago I watched this most encouraging video: The World's First Green-Powered Cargo Ship

Laudato Si:
192. For example, a path of productive development, which is more creative and better directed, could correct the present disparity between excessive technological investment in consumption and insufficient investment in resolving urgent problems facing the human family. It could generate intelligent and profitable ways of reusing, revamping and recycling, and it could also improve the energy efficiency of cities. Productive diversification offers the fullest possibilities to human ingenuity to create and innovate, while at the same time protecting the environment and creating more sources of employment. Such creativity would be a worthy expression of our most noble human qualities, for we would be striving intelligently, boldly and responsibly to promote a sustainable and equitable development within the context of a broader concept of quality of life. On the other hand, to find ever new ways of despoiling nature, purely for the sake of new consumer items and quick profit, would be, in human terms, less worthy and creative, and more superficial.

For Feast of Birthday of Mary

Micah 5.1-4: The Lord says this: But you, Bethlehem, the least of the clans of Judah, out of you will be born for me, the one who is to rule over Israel. His origin goes back to the distant past, to the days of old. The Lord's help will be on hold until the time when she who is to give birth, gives birth. He will stand and feed his flock with the power of the Lord, with the majesty of the name of his God. He himself will be peace.

Romans 8.28-30: We know that by turning everything to their good, God co-operates with all those who love him, with all those he has called according to his purpose. They are the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers and sisters. He called those he intended for this; those he called, he justified, and with those he justified, he shared his glory.
Listen

Matthew 1.18-25: This is how Jesus came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph. But before they lived together, Mary became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. An angel  appeared to Joseph in a dream and said "Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to live with Mary as your wife". Her baby has been conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son. You must name him 'Jesus' ('God saves') because he will save his people from their sins." Joseph  took Mary to his home as his wife. She gave birth to a son, Jesus
Dear Jesus, Son of God, son of Mary, step-son of Joseph, please help me understand how you are the Saviour of the world

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

If it's Mary's birthday, how come the readings are all about Jesus' birth?! Because Mary is the moon, Jesus is the sun .... all of Mary's light/importance comes from Jesus and reflects Jesus' light/importance. Honoring Mary is a very ancient and very special way of honoring Jesus. Just like in any place/culture we give honor to a person by honoring their parents

2 Samuel 14-15: When David had finished his time of mourning for Amnon, he allowed Absalom to return to Jerusalem. Only after two years did David agree to meet Absalom. He met him and pardoned him. But as time went on Absalom started to plot against David. Absalom gathered enough supporters to overthrow David. David found out about the plot and fled from Jerusalem. David was very sad and prayed to God that someday he could return to Jerusalem.

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.

1 John 4.7-16: Let us love one another. Love comes from God. God is love. God showed his love for us by sending his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Since God has loved us so much we should love one another. God is love. Anyone who lives in love, lives in God, and God lives in him

Mark 14.1-11: Two days before the Passover festival, the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him put to death. During these days Jesus had a meal at the home of Simon the leper. At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus' head. The woman understood that Jesus was soon to die. One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest Jesus at a convenient time.
The leaders promised to give Judas money. Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest

Laudato Si:
191. Whenever these questions are raised, some react by accusing others of irrationally attempting to stand in the way of progress and human development. But we need to grow in the conviction that a decrease in the pace of production and consumption can at times give rise to another form of progress and development. Efforts to promote a sustainable use of natural resources are not a waste of money, but rather an investment capable of providing other economic benefits in the medium term. If we look at the larger picture, we can see that more diversified and innovative forms of production which impact less on the environment can prove very profitable. It is a matter of openness to different possibilities which do not involve stifling human creativity and its ideals of progress, but rather directing that energy along new channels.

2 Samuel 13: David had many wives and concubines. One of his sons, Amnon, fell in love with his step-sister Tamar and raped her. King David was very angry about this but did not punish Amnon, since he loved him. Amnon was his first-born son. But another son, Absalom, Tamar's full brother,

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and glory. He will send his angels with a loud trumpet to gather good people from all parts of the earth. Therefore you should live a good life and you will have nothing to fear on your last day"
