Yesterday MercyHK's canteen opened at 191 Temple Street ... and a non-stop
stream of customers ....nearly all of them from many parishes in HK ...came
for a meal. God bless them all! And God bless the 5 staff, augmented by Lucia
Leung and Eddie Chan, who cheerfully served people on our very first day of
operation. A memorable day. THANK YOU JESUS!

1Kings
8-9: When the temple was finished,
Solomon shifted the Sacred Chest to the temple.
After the Chest was placed in the temple,
the glorious cloud of the Lord filled the temple. Solomon then praised God and
blessed the people.
Solomon prayed that the temple would be a place of blessings. Solomon also prayed that all the
peoples of the world
would come to know the Lord from whom all life comes. The Lord again appeared to Solomon and said:
"I will be near to all who enter the temple you have built."
Dear God, may all temples and
churches in the world
be places where people praise and love you

Psalm
126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,
it seemed like a dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us.
Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for
the sowing.
They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all
people who are sorrowful as they work

Revelation
2.1-4:
The Son of Man gave me this message for the
church in Ephesus:
"I know all about you. I know how much you have suffered for me. But your love has grown cold. Repent, and revive your original love".
Jesus, keep my love for you strong. Don't let
it grow cold

Mark 15.16-20:
After the Roman soldiers scourged Jesus, they made fun of
him.
They put a purple cloak on him. They made a crown out of thorns and put it
on his head. They knelt in front of him
and mocked him saying "Hail, king of the Jews". They hit
his head with a reed, and spat on him.
When they had finished making fun of him,
they dressed him in his own clothes and led him away to crucify him
Jesus, please don't let me hurt
other people by making fun of them

203. Since the market tends to promote
extreme consumerism in an effort to sell its products, people
can easily get caught up in a whirlwind of needless buying and spending.
Compulsive consumerism is one example of how the techno-economic paradigm
affects individuals. Romano Guardini had already foreseen this: "The
gadgets and technics forced upon him by the patterns of machine production and
of abstract planning man accepts quite simply; they are the forms of life
itself. To either a greater or lesser degree mass man is convinced that his
conformity is both reasonable and just". This paradigm leads people
to believe that they are free as long as they have the supposed freedom to
consume. But those really free are the minority who wield economic and
financial power. Amid this confusion, postmodern humanity has not yet achieved
a new self-awareness capable of offering guidance and direction, and this lack
of identity is a source of anxiety. We have too many means and only a few
insubstantial ends.

202. Many things have to change course, but
it is we human beings above all who need to change. We lack an
awareness of our common origin, of our mutual belonging, and of a future to be
shared with everyone. This basic awareness would enable the development of new
convictions, attitudes and forms of life. A great cultural, spiritual and
educational challenge stands before us, and it will demand that we set out on
the long path of renewal.

One Sunday the
Spirit possessed me. I heard a

the crowd to demand
the execution of Jesus. They called out to Pilate "Crucify him".
Pilate asked "Why? What has

then ordered Jesus to be scourged and crucified

201.
The majority of people living on our planet profess to be believers. This
should spur religions to dialogue among themselves for the sake of protecting
nature, defending the poor, and building networks of respect and fraternity.
Dialogue among the various sciences is likewise needed, since each can tend to
become enclosed in its own language, while specialization leads to a certain
isolation and the absolutization of its own field of knowledge. This prevents
us from confronting environmental problems effectively. An open and respectful
dialogue is also needed between the various ecological movements, among which
ideological conflicts are not infrequently encountered. The
gravity of the ecological crisis demands that we all look to the common good,
embarking on a path of dialogue which demands patience, self-discipline and
generosity, always keeping in mind that "realities are greater
than ideas"

25-28: Happy the husband of
a really good wife. A good wife is the joy of her husband. Do not praise a
person before they have spoken. A person's speech reveals what sort of person
is speaking. Among stupid people look for an opportunity to leave, but among
thoughtful people take your time. Sarcasm and abuse are the mark of an
arrogant person. Resentment
and anger are bad for everyone. Forgive
others if they have offended you. Then when you pray, your own sins
will be forgiven. Avoid quarrelling and losing your temper. Do not let your
mouth speak scandal.
Lord, please give me the wisdom to control my

Psalm
103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord.
All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never
forget all his blessings. It
is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It
is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an
eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in
mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those
who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our
sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who
love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the
voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul,
give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

If we die, we die for the Lord. Alive or dead, we belong to the Lord. Never

treat other people with contempt. The kingdom of God is not about
eating special food. The kingdom of God is about friendship with God, and
peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Do whatever you can to help other people

Matthew
18.21-35: Peter asked Jesus "How
many times must I forgive someone? 7 times?" Jesus answered "Not
7, but 77 times. For the kingdom of heaven is like a king who cancelled
the huge debt of one of his servants. But that same servant refused to cancel
the tiny debt of one of his fellow servants. So the king said to the servant:
'When you appealed to me, I had pity on you and cancelled your big debt.
But you refused to have pity on your fellow servant who asked you for mercy.
Therefore you must now go to prison until your big debt is paid.' If you
refuse to forgive other people, you are making yourself ineligible for God's
forgiveness."

200. Any technical solution which science
claims to offer will be powerless to solve the serious problems of our world
if humanity loses its compass, if we lose sight of the great motivations which
make it possible for us to live in harmony, to make sacrifices and to treat
others well. Believers themselves must constantly feel challenged to live in a
way consonant with their faith and not to contradict it by their actions. They
need to be encouraged to be ever open to God's grace and to draw constantly
from their deepest convictions about love, justice and peace. If
a mistaken understanding of our own principles has at times led us to justify
mistreating nature, to exercise tyranny over creation, to engage in war,
injustice and acts of violence, we believers should acknowledge that by so
doing we were not faithful to the treasures of wisdom which we have been
called to protect and preserve. Cultural limitations in different eras
often affected the perception of these ethical and spiritual treasures, yet by
constantly returning to their sources, religions will be better equipped to
respond to today's needs.

Then Peter even more strongly replied "I do not know the man". At that very moment, a rooster

199. It
cannot be maintained that empirical science provides a complete explanation of
life, the interplay of all creatures and the whole of reality. This
would be to breach the limits imposed by its own methodology. If we reason
only within the confines of the latter, little room would be left for
aesthetic sensibility, poetry, or even reason's ability to grasp the ultimate
meaning and purpose of things. I would add that "religious classics
can prove meaningful in every age; they have an enduring power to open new
horizons Is it reasonable and enlightened to dismiss certain writings
simply because they arose in the context of religious belief?" It
would be quite simplistic to think that ethical principles present themselves
purely in the abstract, detached from any context. Nor does the fact that they
may be couched in religious language detract from their value in public
debate. The ethical principles capable of being apprehended by reason can
always reappear in different guise and find expression in a variety of
languages, including religious language.

Hebrews 5.7-9: During his life on earth, Christ
offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud
and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of
death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was
Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he
became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation.

Psalm 31: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Let me never be put to shame. In your justice, set me free, hear me and speedily rescue me. Be a rock of refuge for me, a mighty stronghold to save me, for you are my rock, my stronghold. Into your hands I commend my spirit. It is you who will redeem me, Lord. I trust in you, Lord. You are my God. My life is in your hands, deliver me from the hands of those who hate me.

Luke 2.33-35: As
the child's father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were
being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother:
"You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of
many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected - and
a sword will pierce your own soul too - so that the secret
thoughts of many may be laid bare."

John
19.25-27: Near
the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's
sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and
the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother,
"Woman, this is your son". Then to the disciple he said,
"This is your mother". And from that moment the disciple made a
place for her in his home

and the economy tend to blame each other when it comes to poverty and

their own mistakes and find forms of interaction directed to the common good.
While some are concerned only with financial gain, and others with holding on
to or increasing their power, what we are left with are conflicts or spurious
agreements where the last thing either party is concerned about is caring for
the environment and protecting those who are most vulnerable. Here too, we see
how true it is that "unity is greater than conflict"

Numbers 21: In
order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline.
But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among
the people, and many people died. The people then said to Moses "We have
sinned; please pray for us to save us". Moses prayed for them, and
God heard his prayer. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a
pole. Anyone
bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live.
Jesus' words (John 3.13): "The
Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so
that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him".

Psalm
78: May future generations
not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our
ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide
food and water for them in
the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of
compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans.
Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of
Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and
serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader. God called
him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

Philippians
2.6-11: His state
was divine, yet Christ Jesus did not cling to his equality with God, but
emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and
became as humans are. And being as all humans are, he was humbler yet, even
to accepting death, death
on a cross. But God raised him high, and gave him the name which is
above all other names, so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in
the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus, and that every
tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Recording (song: The
Philippians Hymn)

John
3.13-17: Jesus
said to Nicodemus: "No one has gone up to heaven except the one who
came down from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven; and the
Son of Man must be lifted up, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,
so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him". Yes, God
loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who
believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his
Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the
world might be saved.

thank you for coming into this world. Please help more and more people

197. What is needed is a
politics which is far-sighted and capable of a new, integral and
interdisciplinary approach to handling the different aspects of the crisis.
Often, politics itself is responsible for the disrepute in which it is held,
on account of corruption and the failure to enact sound public policies. If in
a given region the state does not carry out its responsibilities, some
business groups can come forward in the guise of benefactors, wield real
power, and consider themselves exempt from certain rules, to the point of
tolerating different forms of organized crime, human trafficking, the drug
trade and violence, all of which become very difficult to eradicate. If
politics shows itself incapable of breaking such a perverse logic, and remains
caught up in inconsequential discussions, we will continue to avoid facing the
major problems of humanity. A strategy for real change calls for rethinking
processes in their entirety, for it is not enough to include a few superficial
ecological considerations while failing to question the logic which underlies
present-day culture. A healthy politics needs to be able to take up this
challenge.

The
Book Blog:
readings + recordings
Readings are from
Simple Bible
1 Kings 3: The Lord appeared to King Solomon in a dream
and said "Ask me for anything you'd like." Solomon asked for
wisdom: "Give your
servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil." God replied: "I now give you a heart full
of wisdom,
wisdom greater than anyone else has ever had. And I also give you what you did not ask for:
riches and glory and long life." Not long after this, two prostitutes came for
judgement:
they lived in the same house and both had given birth to a son,
but one of the babies died during the night.
The mother of the dead baby changed babies
during the same night
and claimed that the living baby was hers. Solomon asked for a sword to cut the
living baby in two
and give half to each mother. The lying woman agreed, but the real mother
said
"No. Don't kill the baby. Give it to the other woman." Solomon then knew the real mother was telling
the truth
and gave the baby to her.
For wisdom such as this, Solomon's reputation spread far.
Dear Lord, please give me more
wisdom for my life
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
123: To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her
mistress,
so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.
We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn
of the rich,
with the proud man's disdain.
Lord, please protect poor
people from being exploited by rich people
Listen

Jude: From Jude, servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James,
to those who are dear to God the Father and kept safe,
wishing you mercy and peace and love. I write with urgency to appeal to you:
stand up for the faith that has been entrusted to us. Some false teachers have infiltrated our ranks.
They reject the teaching of our Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
They say "anything goes" in the area of morality. Such teaching, such people, must be opposed.
Be kind to such people, but with great caution. To God who saves us through Jesus Christ our Lord,
be glory and all honor, now and forever
Jesus, please protect your church from false
teachers
Listen

Mark
14.53-65: The men who arrested Jesus took
him to a meeting of the religious leaders. The leaders wanted to condemn
Jesus to death,
even if they had to use false evidence. Jesus remained silent before
their accusations.
Then the main leader challenged Jesus:
"Are you the Saviour, the Son of God?" Jesus replied "I am".
The leader then called out
"We have heard him claim to be of
Divine origin. This is blasphemy". The rest of the leaders shouted
"He should die".
Then they spat in Jesus' face and hit him with their fists
Jesus, thank you for submitting
yourself to insult and spittle
for the salvation of the world
Listen

Reflection: Imagine how parents would feel to be spat in the face by their children ..... a tiny, a very tiny comparison to try to understand how Jesus felt when spat in the face
