Kings 1: Ahaziah, king of Israel, was seriously ill
after a fall.
He tried to send messengers to the temple of a false god
to ask about his future. But the Lord sent Elijah the prophet to
intercept the messengers
and tell them that the king would die. The king sent 50 soldiers to arrest Elijah
but as they approached Elijah, fire from heaven destroyed them. The king sent another 50 soldiers.
They too were destroyed by fire from heaven. A third group of 50 was sent.
They begged
Elijah to spare them.
The Lord told Elijah to go with them to the king. Elijah then told the king to his face that he
would soon die
because he had tried to ask a false god about his future.
Not long after this, Ahaziah died.
Dear Lord, please don't let us
ever get involved
with false religion
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
139: O Lord, you search me and you know me.
You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life,
all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue,
you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding,
too high, beyond my reach. It was you who created my being,
knit me together in my mother's womb. I thank you for the wonder of my life,
for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of
life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

Revelation
5.11-14: I heard the sound of an immense number of
angels gathered around God's throne. There were 10,000 times 10,000 of
them, shouting:
"The Lamb that was sacrificed is worthy to be given power,
riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and blessing". I heard all living things in creation -
angels, people, animals - crying out: "To the One sitting on the
throne and to the Lamb, be all praise, honor, glory and power for ever and
ever"
"Thou are worthy, Thou art worthy, Thou
are worthy O Lord,
to receive glory, glory and honor, glory and honor and power"
Listen

Luke
1.46-56: Mary said "My soul praises the
greatness of the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior. Starting
from today, all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has
done great things for me". Mary stayed with Elizabeth about 3 months and
then went home.
Elizabeth gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives shared her joy.

217. "The external deserts in the
world are growing, because the internal deserts have become so
vast". For this reason, the ecological crisis is also a summons to
profound interior conversion. It must be said that some committed and
prayerful Christians, with the excuse of realism and pragmatism, tend to
ridicule expressions of concern for the environment. Others are passive; they
choose not to change their habits and thus become inconsistent. So
what they all need is an "ecological conversion",
whereby the effects of their encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in
their relationship with the world around them. Living our vocation to be
protectors of God's handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an
optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience.

Yesterday's speed boat trip from West Beach to Sai Kung
was a terrifying experience ... seriously ...waves were too big for such a
trip .... boat company should not be allowed to operate in such dangerous
conditions. In fact, the trip was so rough ... boat going up and down so
violently, that one member of our hike group at one stage had to pick up their
three false teeth from the floor of the boat!!!

Yesterday I was again pleasantly surprised by the number of

theme. And people from Mainland China are coming also ...including a lovely

c.f. Feast of the Guardian Angels
Exodus
23: The Lord says
this: "I myself will
send an angel before
you to guard you as you go and to bring you to the
place that I have prepared. Give him reverence and listen to all that he says.
Offer him no defiance; he would not pardon such a fault, for my name is in
him. If you listen carefully to his voice and do all that I say, I shall
be enemy to your enemies, foe to your foes. My angel will go before you."
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
91: He who dwells in the
shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I
trust". The
Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You
will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon
you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he
commanded his angels to
keep you safe in all your ways.

Acts
12: When
Peter was rescued from prison, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John
Mark where people were praying for him, thinking he was still in prison. A
servant girl opened the door when Peter knocked. She ran inside to tell the
group that Peter was at the door. The group did not believe Peter was
there. One of them said "it
must be his angel".
Eventually they opened the door and Peter described how an angel had rescued
him from prison.
Recording

Matthew 18.1: The disciples came to Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, "I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven."
Reflection
on the above readings: I
recommend this little prayer which I've said each morning and night for 60
years:
Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's
love commits me here. Ever this day (night) be at my side, to light and guard,
to rule and guide. Amen

216. The rich heritage of Christian spirituality, the fruit of
twenty centuries of personal and communal experience, has a precious
contribution to make to the renewal of humanity. Here, I
would like to offer Christians a few suggestions for an ecological
spirituality grounded in the convictions of our faith, since the
teachings of the Gospel have direct consequences for our way of thinking,
feeling and living. More than in ideas or concepts as such, I am interested in
how such a spirituality can motivate us to a more passionate concern for the
protection of our world. A commitment this lofty cannot be sustained by
doctrine alone, without a spirituality capable of inspiring us, without an
"interior impulse which encourages, motivates, nourishes and gives
meaning to our individual and communal activity". Admittedly,
Christians have not always appropriated and developed the spiritual treasures
bestowed by God upon the Church, where the life of the spirit is not
dissociated from the body or from nature or from worldly realities, but lived
in and with them, in communion with all that surrounds us.

In this regard, "the relationship between a good aesthetic education and
the maintenance of a healthy environment cannot be overlooked". By
learning to see and appreciate beauty, we learn to reject self-interested
pragmatism. If someone has not learned to stop and admire something
beautiful, we should not be surprised if he or she treats everything as an
object to be used and abused without scruple. If we want to bring about deep
change, we need to realize that certain mindsets really do influence our
behaviour. Our efforts at education will be inadequate and ineffectual unless
we strive to promote a new way of thinking about human beings, life, society
and our relationship with nature. Otherwise, the paradigm of consumerism will
continue to advance, with the help of the media and the highly effective
workings of the market.

c.f. readings for Sunday 26
Ezekiel
12-18: Ezekiel spoke
God's message for the false prophets: "You have misled my people. You
have not bothered to protect my people". Ezekiel also
called on the people to stop their idolatry. He reminded them how to follow
the Lord: A
good person is law-abiding and honest; a good person oppresses no one,
never steals; a good person gives food and clothing to the poor. "God
takes no delight in the death of a sinner. God hopes the sinner will renounce
wickedness and live."
Lord, please help me to avoid evil ..... and do more good
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
24-26: The Lord's is the
earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May
all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory.
Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive
my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Philippians
1.27 - 2.4: Avoid
anything in your everyday lives that would be unworthy of the Good News of
Christ. Be united in your convictions, and united in your love. There
must be no competition among you, no conceit. Everyone should be
self-effacing. Always regard others as better than yourself. Put others
interests before your own.
Jesus, help me say "no" to anything unworthy of your Good News

Matthew
21.28-32: Jesus
said to the chief priests and elders of the people, "What is your
opinion? A man had two sons. He went and said to the first, "My boy, you
go and work in the vineyard today." He answered, "I will not
go," but afterwards thought better of it and went. The man then went and
said the same thing to the second who answered, "Certainly, sir,"
but did not go. Which of the two did the father's will?' 'The first' they
said. Jesus said to them, 'I tell you solemnly, tax
collectors and prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before
you. For John came to you, a pattern of true righteousness, but you did
not believe him, and yet the tax collectors and prostitutes did. Even after
seeing that, you refused to think better of it and believe in him.'

Political institutions and various other social groups are also entrusted with
helping to raise people's awareness. So too is the Church. All
Christian communities have an important role to play in ecological education.
It is my hope that our seminaries and houses of formation will provide an
education in responsible simplicity of life, in grateful contemplation of
God's world, and in concern for the needs of the poor and the protection of
the environment. Because the stakes are so high, we need institutions
empowered to impose penalties for damage inflicted on the environment. But we
also need the personal qualities of self-control and willingness to learn from
one another.

Tobit
12 (Raphael): When
Tobit's banquet was finished, Tobit wanted to thank Raphael for
all his help. Only then did Raphael tell Tobit and Tobias that he was an angel
sent by God to help them. "I am Raphael, one of the 7 angels who stand
ever ready to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord. Never tire of
giving God thanks. And never tire of helping the poor." Raphael
farewelled them, rose in the air, and left them. They praised and thanked God
for all he had done for them.
Dear God, thank you for all your love, all your blessings
My recording of this reading

Psalm 138: I
thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the
angels I will bless
you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness
and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you
answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank
you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's
ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!"

and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day

Revelation 12 (Michael): Then

his angels fought the dragon and his angels. Michael
won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven. The great dragon, the

Luke
1 (Gabriel): In
the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to
the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a
man named Joseph. The
angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God.
You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great
and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can
this happen since I am a virgin?" The
angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the
Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has,
in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth month".
"I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have
said, be done for me". And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you
for becoming a baby in Mary's womb

Reflection on the above Bible readings:
Notice
how the names Raphael, Michael and
Gabriel all end in "el"
which means "God"!
When we are sick we can ask Raphael ("Medicine
of God") to pray for us. When we are in danger, we can ask Michael ("Who
is like God?") to pray for us. When we feel powerless and weak, we can
ask Gabriel ("God
is my strength) to pray for us.

Laudato
Si:213.
Ecological education can take place in a variety of settings: at school, in
families, in the media, in catechesis and elsewhere. Good education plants
seeds when we are young, and these continue to bear fruit throughout life.
Here, though, I would stress the great importance of the family, which is
"the place in which life - the gift of God - can be properly welcomed and
protected against the many attacks to which it is exposed, and can develop in
accordance with what constitutes authentic human growth. In the face of the
so-called culture of death, the family is the heart of the culture of
life". In
the family we first learn how to show love and respect for life; we are taught
the proper use of things, order and cleanliness, respect for the local
ecosystem and care for all creatures. In the family we receive an integral
education, which enables us to grow harmoniously in personal maturity. In the
family we learn to ask without demanding, to say "thank you" as an
expression of genuine gratitude for what we have been given, to control our
aggressivity and greed, and to ask forgiveness when we have caused harm. These
simple gestures of heartfelt courtesy help to create a culture of shared life
and respect for our surroundings.

of a 21
year old local HK man in
prison for drug trafficking: how his family got caught up in drugs ... as a
warning and hope that other families are not devastated by drugs. The man's
mother is also in prison in HK for drug trafficking - here

The
Book Blog:
readings + recordings
Readings are from
Simple Bible
1 Kings 19:
Elijah once spent a night in a cave.
The Lord then told him to stand at the mouth of the cave. Then there was a mighty wind that
shattered trees and rocks.
But the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake.
But the Lord was not in the earthquake. Then there was a gentle breeze.
And the Lord was in the breeze. Not long after this
Elijah called Elisha to become his follower.
Dear Lord, please help us
be aware of your presence in our lives
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
135: Praise the name of the Lord,
praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good.
Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he
wills
in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
They have mouths but they cannot speak.
They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols.
Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord.
Dear Lord, please help people
who worship idols to know and love you

Revelation
3.14-17: He gave me this message for the church in
Laodicea: "You are neither cold nor
hot. I wish you
were one or the other.
But since you are lukewarm, you are cutting yourself off from me. You are rich in this word's goods, but you are
spiritually poor. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, please don't ever let me become a
lukewarm Christian
Listen
Luke
1.1-4: Dear
Friend of God, there are already many reports written about
Jesus.
These reports come from people who were the earliest eyewitnesses and ministers of the Good News.
After checking the whole story, I also have decided to write a
report, so
that you may see for yourself the truth and accuracy of the Good News
Jesus, help me understand
your Good News
Listen
Reflection: Luke was a doctor and an historian .... his report is extra trustworthy

211.
Yet this education, aimed at creating an "ecological citizenship",
is at times limited to providing information, and fails to instil good habits.
The existence of laws and regulations is insufficient in the long run to curb
bad conduct, even when effective means of enforcement are present. If the laws
are to bring about significant, long-lasting effects, the majority of the
members of society must be adequately motivated to accept them, and personally
transformed to respond. Only by cultivating sound virtues will people be able
to make a selfless ecological commitment. A
person who could afford to spend and consume more but regularly uses less
heating and wears warmer clothes, shows the kind of convictions and attitudes
which help to protect the environment.
There is a nobility in the duty to care for creation through little daily
actions, and it is wonderful how education can bring about real changes in
lifestyle. Education in environmental responsibility can encourage ways of
acting which directly and significantly affect the world around us, such as avoiding
the use of plastic and paper, reducing water consumption, separating refuse,
cooking only what can reasonably be consumed, showing care for other living
beings, using public transport or car-pooling, planting trees, turning off
unnecessary lights, or any
number of other practices. All of these reflect a generous and worthy
creativity which brings out the best in human beings. Reusing something
instead of immediately discarding it, when done for the right reasons, can be
an act of love which expresses our own dignity.
