10. It is often heard also that efforts to
mitigate climate change by reducing the use of fossil fuels and developing
cleaner energy sources will lead to a reduction in the number of jobs. What is
happening is that millions of people are losing their jobs due to different
effects of climate change: rising sea levels, droughts and other phenomena
affecting the planet have left many people adrift. Conversely, the transition
to renewable forms of energy, properly managed, as well as efforts to adapt to
the damage caused by climate change, are capable of generating countless jobs
in different sectors. This demands
that politicians and business leaders should even now be concerning themselves
with it.

Revelation
20.11-15:
Then I saw God sitting on a great white throne.
I saw the dead, both great and small, standing
in front of his throne, while the Book of Life was opened, in which was
the record of everyone's life. Everyone was judged according to the way they
had lived. Then Death and Hades were thrown into a
burning lake.
This burning lake is the second death. Anyone whose name could not be found in the

was thrown into the burning lake

4.1-13:
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led by
the Spirit into the wilderness. For 40 days he ate nothing, and was tempted
by the Devil. The Devil said "If you are the Son of
God, turn a stone into bread".
Jesus replied "Scripture says we do not live on bread alone". The Devil took him to a high place and showed
him all the kingdoms of the world. "Worship me and they will all be
yours" he said.
Jesus replied "Scripture says we must worship only God". Then the Devil took him to the top of the
Temple in Jerusalem and said "If you are the Son of God, throw
yourself down and let the angels protect you". Jesus replied "Scripture says we must not
put the Lord our God to the test". The Devil then left
him

9.
In an attempt to simplify reality, there are those who would place
responsibility on the poor, since they have many children, and even attempt to
resolve the problem by mutilating women in less developed countries. As usual,
it would seem that everything is the fault of the poor. Yet
the reality is that a low, richer percentage of the planet contaminates more
than the poorest 50% of the total world population, and that per capita
emissions of the richer countries are much greater than those of the poorer
ones. How can we forget that Africa, home to more than half of the
world’s poorest people, is responsible for a minimal portion of historic
emissions?

local variations - that persists for several decades.

Isaiah
25: On Mount
Zion in Jerusalem, the Lord will prepare for all peoples
a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines. On this mountain he will
delete Death. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek. Lord, you
are my God, I extol you, I praise your name. You, Lord, are a refuge for the
poor, a refuge for the needy in distress.
Lord, please give hope and courage to people who are sad and troubled in

Psalm
23: The Lord is my
shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures
where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my
drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If
I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there
with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You
have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my
foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely
goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's
own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Matthew
22.1-10: Jesus
said to the chief priests and elders of the people: The kingdom of heaven may
be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding. He sent his
servants to call those who had been invited, but they would not come. Next he
sent some more servants. "Tell those who have been invited" he said
"that I have my banquet all prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have
been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to the wedding." But they
were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business, and
the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and killed them. The king was
furious. He dispatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their
town. Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those
who were invited proved to be unworthy, go to the crossroads in the town and
invite everyone you can find to the wedding." So these servants went out
on to the roads and collected together everyone they could find, bad and good
alike; and
the wedding hall was filled with guests.

7. In order to ridicule those who speak of
global warming, it is pointed out that intermittent periods of extreme cold
regularly occur. One fails to mention that this and other extraordinary
symptoms are nothing but diverse alternative expressions of the same cause:
the global imbalance that is provoking the warming of the planet. Droughts and
floods, the dried-up lakes, communities swept away by seaquakes and flooding
ultimately have the same origin. At the same time, if
we speak of a global phenomenon, we cannot confuse this with sporadic events
explained in good part by local factors.

deride these facts. They bring up allegedly solid scientific data, like the
fact that the planet has always had, and will have, periods of cooling and
warming. They forget to mention another relevant datum: that what we are
presently experiencing is an unusual acceleration of warming, at
such a speed that it will take only one generation - not centuries or
millennia - in order to verify it. The rise in the sea level and the
melting of glaciers can be easily perceived by an individual in his or her
lifetime, and probably in a few years many populations will have to move their
homes because of these facts.

5. Despite all attempts to deny, conceal,
gloss over or relativize the issue, the signs of climate change are here and
increasingly evident. No one can ignore the fact that in recent years we have
witnessed extreme weather phenomena, frequent periods of unusual heat, drought
and other cries of protest on the part of the earth that are only a few
palpable expressions of a silent
disease that affects everyone. Admittedly, not every concrete
catastrophe ought to be attributed to global climate change. Nonetheless, it
is verifiable that specific climate changes provoked by humanity are notably
heightening the probability of extreme phenomena that are increasingly
frequent and intense. For this reason, we know that every time the global
temperature increases by 0.5° C, the intensity and frequency of great rains
and floods increase in some areas and severe droughts in others, extreme heat
waves in some places and heavy snowfall in others. If up to now we could
have heat waves several times a year, what will happen if the global
temperature increases by 1.5° C, which we are approaching? Those heat waves
will be much more frequent and with greater intensity. If
it should rise above 2 degrees, the icecaps of Greenland and a large part of
Antarctica will melt completely, with immensely grave consequences
for everyone.

Jesus stayed behind without his parents knowing it. They presumed he

listening to the religion teachers and asking them questions. People who
heard him were astounded at his intelligence. His mother said to him "My child, why

Dear Holy Spirit, please bless the
Synod in Rome!
Pope's
new climate change letter "Laudate
Deum:
3. This is a global social issue and one
intimately related to the dignity of human life. The Bishops of the United
States have expressed very well this social meaning of our concern about
climate change, which goes beyond a merely ecological approach, because "our
care for one another and our care for the earth are intimately bound together.
Climate change is one of the principal challenges facing society and the
global community. The effects of climate change are borne by the most
vulnerable people, whether at home or around the world". In a
few words, the Bishops assembled for the Synod for Amazonia said the same
thing: "Attacks on nature have
consequences for people's lives". And to express
bluntly that this is no longer a secondary or ideological question, but a
drama that harms us all, the African bishops stated that climate change makes
manifest "a tragic and striking example of structural sin".

The
Book Blog:
readings + recordings
Readings are from
Simple Bible
2
Kings 6: The king of Aram was at war with Israel.
But each time he planned an attack,
Elisha warned the king of Israel
and the attack was foiled. The king of Aram therefore sent soldiers to
capture Elisha.
Elisha prayed to God for help and the soldiers were temporarily blinded. While they were blinded, Elisha led them to
the king of Israel.
The king of Israel asked Elisha "Shall I kill them?" Elisha told him not to kill them but to feed
them and let them go. After this there was peace for a time between
Aram and Israel.
Dear God, please bless our enemies,
and help us be kind to them
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
146: My soul, give
praise to the Lord.
I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in
princes,
in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they
return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are
helped by Jacob's God,
whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven
and earth,
the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives
bread to the hungry,
the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who
gives sight to the blind,
who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who
protects the stranger
and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who
loves the just
but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for
ever,
Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust
and faith in you

Revelation
12.7-14:
Then war broke out in
heaven. Michael and his
angels fought the dragon and his angels. Michael
won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven. The
great dragon, the serpent, known as the Devil or Satan,
was hurled down to earth. His angels were hurled down with him. The
dragon began to make war on the children of the Woman
- those who obey God and bear witness to Jesus
Jesus,
may your holy angels protect us from Satan

Luke
2.15-20:
After the angels went away, the shepherds
said to one another
"Let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about".
So they quickly went and found Mary and
Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. People who heard the shepherds
talk about the angels were amazed. As for Mary, she treasured every moment of
what had happened
and pondered the whole event in her heart. The shepherds went back to their fields
glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen
Jesus we adore you, Jesus we adore you, Jesus we
adore you, Christ the Lord
