TODAY: WORLD-WIDE DAY OF PRAYER & FASTING FOR PEACE IN THE HOLY LAND!

BBC: History of Israel-Gaza conflict explained

This is good for MercyHK's canteen in Temple Street: Temple Street to become a sensation

SCMP report about my work *** Yesterday at the MercyHK canteen there was a very happy gathering for 10 people who sleep on the street ... and the gathering will continue each Monday from now on at 3pm please God

Dear Holy Spirit, please bless the Synod in Rome!

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
10. It is often heard also that efforts to mitigate climate change by reducing the use of fossil fuels and developing cleaner energy sources will lead to a reduction in the number of jobs. What is happening is that millions of people are losing their jobs due to different effects of climate change: rising sea levels, droughts and other phenomena affecting the planet have left many people adrift. Conversely, the transition to renewable forms of energy, properly managed, as well as efforts to adapt to the damage caused by climate change, are capable of generating countless jobs in different sectors. This demands that politicians and business leaders should even now be concerning themselves with it.

Ezra 1: After the Jewish people had been in Babylon about 70 years, the Lord moved the heart of the king of Persia to free the Jews. The king also told the Jews to re-build their temple in Jerusalem.
Dear Lord, please give freedom to all the peoples of the world
My recording of this reading

Psalm 3: When people make fun of me for believing in you, Lord, I deeply remember how you are my help and my shield. Even when the whole world seems against me, I can go to bed and sleep easy, knowing that you protect me. O Lord, please rescue me from people who plot against me. Lord our savior, please bless everyone who needs help.
Lord, thank you for your protection and help

Revelation 20.11-15: Then I saw God sitting on a great white throne. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing in front of his throne, while the Book of Life was opened, in which was the record of everyone's life. Everyone was judged according to the way they had lived. Then Death and Hades were thrown into a burning lake. This burning lake is the second death. Anyone whose name could not be found in the Book of Life was thrown into the burning lake
Jesus, may all near and dear to me, be in the Book of Life

Luke 4.1-13: Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. For 40 days he ate nothing, and was tempted by the Devil. The Devil said "If you are the Son of God, turn a stone into bread". Jesus replied "Scripture says we do not live on bread alone". The Devil took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. "Worship me and they will all be yours" he said. Jesus replied "Scripture says we must worship only God". Then the Devil took him to the top of the Temple in Jerusalem and said "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and let the angels protect you". Jesus replied "Scripture says we must not put the Lord our God to the test".  The Devil then left him
Jesus, protect us from the Devil and all evil

TOMORROW: WORLD-WIDE DAY OF PRAYER & FASTING FOR PEACE IN THE HOLY LAND!

Below: People sheltering in Gaza church yesterday. Message from the scene:
The situation inside Gaza is dire. The parish compound is filled with Muslims and Christians. No electricity and very little water. They were told to evacuate but with handicapped patients and all the roads bombed, they cannot leave. They are just praying to die together

Israel has gone beyond self-defence

My 2014 Gaza file! This is history sadly continuing to repeat itself!

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
9. In an attempt to simplify reality, there are those who would place responsibility on the poor, since they have many children, and even attempt to resolve the problem by mutilating women in less developed countries. As usual, it would seem that everything is the fault of the poor. Yet the reality is that a low, richer percentage of the planet contaminates more than the poorest 50% of the total world population, and that per capita emissions of the richer countries are much greater than those of the poorer ones. How can we forget that Africa, home to more than half of the world’s poorest people, is responsible for a minimal portion of historic emissions?

2 Kings 21-25: Josiah king of Judah was a good leader who loved the Lord and promoted religious reform. But most other kings of Judah and Israel at this time were not good. The country was invaded by the king of Babylon who deported most of the population to Babylon. Only the poorest people in the countryside were left behind.
Dear God,  please give the world good leaders

Psalm 2: Why are the nations revolting against God? Why won't the nations accept God? O kings and rulers of the nations, listen to God's voice. Serve the Lord with love and honor. Blessed are the nations that love the Lord
Let all the nations love you, Lord. Let all the nations love you

Listen

Revelation 19.1-9: After this I heard the sound of a huge crowd in heaven singing: "Alleluia! Victory and glory and power to our God!" The sound of the crowd  was like the sound of the ocean or the roar of thunder as they called out: "Alleluia! The reign of the Lord our God the Almighty has begun. Let us be glad and joyful, and give praise to God, because this is the time for the marriage of the Lamb". And an angel said "Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb"
Jesus, even on this earth, may I start to hear the sounds of heaven

Listen

Luke 3.15-22: John the Baptist said to the people "I baptize you with water, but someone more powerful than I will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. I am not fit to undo the strap of the powerful one's sandals". Jesus then came and was baptized by John. While Jesus was praying after his baptism, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the shape of a dove. And a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on you"
Jesus, Beloved Son, please baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

At yesterday's regular prayer meeting for cancer patients at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan, a young local HK woman shared the good news that her doctor last week gave her a "nothing found" result from her latest check-up. The woman feels that prayer played a significant part in this result. Another participant shared how prayer has helped reduce the side effects of his treatment. Thank you Jesus!

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
8. Lack of information leads to confusion between large-scale climate projections that involve long periods of time - we are talking about decades at least - with weather forecasts that at most can cover a few weeks. When we speak of climate change, we are referring to a global reality - and constant local variations - that persists for several decades.

c.f. readings for Sunday 28

Isaiah 25: On Mount Zion in Jerusalem, the Lord will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines. On this mountain he will delete Death. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek. Lord, you are my God, I extol you, I praise your name. You, Lord, are a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in distress.
Lord, please give hope and courage to people who are sad and troubled in the world today

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.
Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

Philippians 4.11-20: I have learnt how to manage on whatever I have. I am ready for anything anywhere: full stomach or empty stomach, poverty or plenty. There is nothing I cannot master with the help of the One who gives me strength. I thank you my friends for supporting me financially, especially when I was in great need.
Jesus, bless everyone who has helped me in any way since the day I was born

Matthew 22.1-10: Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding. He sent his servants to call those who had been invited, but they would not come. Next he sent some more servants. "Tell those who have been invited" he said "that I have my banquet all prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to the wedding." But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business, and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and killed them. The king was furious. He dispatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town. Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to be unworthy, go to the crossroads in the town and invite everyone you can find to the wedding." So these servants went out on to the roads and collected together everyone they could find, bad and good alike; and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
7. In order to ridicule those who speak of global warming, it is pointed out that intermittent periods of extreme cold regularly occur. One fails to mention that this and other extraordinary symptoms are nothing but diverse alternative expressions of the same cause: the global imbalance that is provoking the warming of the planet. Droughts and floods, the dried-up lakes, communities swept away by seaquakes and flooding ultimately have the same origin. At the same time, if we speak of a global phenomenon, we cannot confuse this with sporadic events explained in good part by local factors.

2 Kings 20: King Hezekiah became ill and was dying. Hezekiah begged the Lord to cure him. The Lord told Isaiah the prophet to tell Hezekiah: "I will add 15 years to your life." The king recovered and lived for another 15 years.

Psalm 1: Happy the person who avoids evil and evil entertainment. Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words. Luke 3.10-14: People asked John the Baptist how they should reform their lives. He replied: "If anyone has extra clothing, share with people who have none. He replied "No bullying. No extortion. Be content with your pay"

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
6. In recent years, some have chosen to deride these facts. They bring up allegedly solid scientific data, like the fact that the planet has always had, and will have, periods of cooling and warming. They forget to mention another relevant datum: that what we are presently experiencing is an unusual acceleration of warming, at such a speed that it will take only one generation - not centuries or millennia - in order to verify it. The rise in the sea level and the melting of glaciers can be easily perceived by an individual in his or her lifetime, and probably in a few years many populations will have to move their homes because of these facts.

2 Kings 19: King Hezekiah asked the prophet Isaiah for advice. Isaiah said to the king: "The Lord says 'Do not be afraid of the King of Assyria. He shall not enter Jerusalem. I will protect this city and save it.'" That same night the angel of the Lord struck the Assyrian camp with a type of plague which killed thousands of men. The Assyrians then went back to their own land and did not attack Jerusalem.

Psalms 149-150: Sing a new song to the Lord. Let the praise of God be always on our lips. Praise God in his holy temple. Praise him in the heavens. O praise him with sound of trumpet. Luke 3.1-6: In the 15th year of the Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod was ruler of Galilee and during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, God's message entered the heart of John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. I spent yesterday afternoon at Lai Chi Kok men's prison, preceding and following my visit by time at a computer centre in Sham Shui Po for several jobs. One thing I learnt at the computer shop is that if your laptop screen goes black, you can press "Control", "Alt" and "Delete" to bring up your Task Manager to show you how to bring back the light. At the prison I was again saddened to meet more men involved in drug trafficking ... local men as well as men from overseas.

My NGO Voice for Prisoners now has a Linkedin page. Well done, Jane for setting it up!

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
5. Despite all attempts to deny, conceal, gloss over or relativize the issue, the signs of climate change are here and increasingly evident. No one can ignore the fact that in recent years we have witnessed extreme weather phenomena, frequent periods of unusual heat, drought and other cries of protest on the part of the earth that are only a few palpable expressions of a silent disease that affects everyone. Admittedly, not every concrete catastrophe ought to be attributed to global climate change. Nonetheless, it is verifiable that specific climate changes provoked by humanity are notably heightening the probability of extreme phenomena that are increasingly frequent and intense. For this reason, we know that every time the global temperature increases by 0.5° C, the intensity and frequency of great rains and floods increase in some areas and severe droughts in others, extreme heat waves in some places and heavy snowfall in others. If up to now we could have heat waves several times a year, what will happen if the global temperature increases by 1.5° C, which we are approaching? Those heat waves will be much more frequent and with greater intensity. If it should rise above 2 degrees, the icecaps of Greenland and a large part of Antarctica will melt completely, with immensely grave consequences for everyone.

Praise him all animals, wild and tame, reptiles and birds in the air. Praise him all earth's kings and peoples, earth's princes and rulers. Luke 2.39-52: Joseph and Mary moved back to their own town of Nazareth. The child Jesus was filled with wisdom as he grew older. Each year Joseph and Mary would take Jesus to Jerusalem for the celebration of the  Passover. When Jesus was 12 years old, they went to Jerusalem as usual. But when their traveling group left Jerusalem, Jesus stayed behind without his parents knowing it. They presumed he was somewhere with the group. When they couldn't find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After 2 days, they found him, in the Temple, listening to the religion teachers and asking them questions. People who heard him were astounded at his intelligence. His mother said to him "My child, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been really worried about you". Jesus replied "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that I must be concerned with my Father's work?"  But they didn't understand what he meant. He went with them to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother stored all these things in her heart

Psalm 147: Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due. The Lord builds up Jerusalem and brings back Israel's exiles. He heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises the lowly and humbles the wicked. He fixes the number of the stars. He calls each one by name. Our Lord is great and almighty. His wisdom can never be measured. He covers the heavens with clouds. He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass and with plants to serve our needs. His delight is not in horses nor his pleasure in warriors' strength. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died,  he would see the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit, he came to the Temple, took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying. "Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen the Savior. He is a light to enlighten the pagans, and he is the glory of your people Israel"

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
3. This is a global social issue and one intimately related to the dignity of human life. The Bishops of the United States have expressed very well this social meaning of our concern about climate change, which goes beyond a merely ecological approach, because "our care for one another and our care for the earth are intimately bound together. Climate change is one of the principal challenges facing society and the global community. The effects of climate change are borne by the most vulnerable people, whether at home or around the world".  In a few words, the Bishops assembled for the Synod for Amazonia said the same thing: "Attacks on nature have consequences for people's lives".  And to express bluntly that this is no longer a secondary or ideological question, but a drama that harms us all, the African bishops stated that climate change makes manifest "a tragic and striking example of structural sin".

The Book Blog:
readings + recordings

Readings are from Simple Bible

2 Kings 6: The king of Aram was at war with Israel. But each time he planned an attack, Elisha warned the king of Israel and the attack was foiled. The king of Aram therefore sent soldiers to capture Elisha. Elisha prayed to God for help and the soldiers were temporarily blinded. While they were blinded, Elisha led them to the king of Israel. The king of Israel asked Elisha "Shall I kill them?" Elisha told him not to kill them but to feed them and let them go. After this there was peace for a time between Aram and Israel.
Dear God, please bless our enemies, and help us be kind to them

My recording of this reading

Psalm 146: My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

Revelation 12.7-14: Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought the dragon and his angels. Michael won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven. The great dragon, the serpent, known as the Devil or Satan, was hurled down to earth. His angels were hurled down with him. The dragon began to make war on the children of the Woman - those who obey God and bear witness to Jesus
Jesus, may your holy angels protect us from Satan

Luke 2.15-20: After the angels went away, the shepherds said to one another "Let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about". So they quickly went and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. People who heard the shepherds talk about the angels were amazed. As for Mary, she treasured every moment of what had happened and pondered the whole event in her heart. The shepherds went back to their fields glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen
Jesus we adore you, Jesus we adore you, Jesus we adore you, Christ the Lord
