Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
24. Not every increase in power represents progress for humanity. We need only think of the "admirable" technologies that were employed to decimate populations, drop atomic bombs and annihilate ethnic groups. There were historical moments where our admiration at progress blinded us to the horror of its consequences. But that risk is always present, because "our immense technological development has not been accompanied by a development in human responsibility, values and conscience. We stand naked and exposed in the face of our ever-increasing power, lacking the wherewithal to control it. We have certain superficial mechanisms, but we cannot claim to have a sound ethics, a culture and spirituality genuinely capable of setting limits and teaching clear-minded self-restraint".  It is not strange that so great a power in such hands is capable of destroying life, while the mentality proper to the technocratic paradigm blinds us and does not permit us to see this extremely grave problem of present-day humanity.

Tobit 1: Tobit was a Jewish exile living in the city of Nineveh in Assyria. Even though other Jewish exiles, even his own relatives, neglected their religion, Tobit stayed loyal to God. Tobit also cared for the poor and hungry. And he made a special practice of burying the dead.
Dear God, please help me to be like Tobit: loyal to you and caring for the poor

Psalms 20-21: May the Lord protect and help you, may he give you your heart's desire and fulfil every one of your plans. Some trust in chariots or horses, but we trust in the Lord.

Acts 2.22-36: Peter said to the crowd "You know that Jesus of Nazareth was a man from God. You know all about the miracles he worked. This same Jesus has been raised from the dead by God. There are many witnesses to his resurrection. Jesus has been taken up to God's right hand. He has received the Holy Spirit from the Father. He has poured out the Holy Spirit on us. Know for sure that Jesus whom you crucified is the Messiah and he is Lord"

Luke 6.6-11: On another Sabbath Jesus  visited a prayer hall. A man with a withered hand was in the prayer hall. Some religious leaders were watching to see if Jesus would heal the man (since no work was allowed on the Sabbath, and they regarded healing as work). Jesus knew what they were thinking,  so he said to the man with the withered hand "Stand up! Come out into the middle of the hall". He came out and stood there. Jesus then asked the leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil; to save life or to destroy it?" Then he said to the man with the withered hand "Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was healed. The leaders were very angry. They left the prayer hall and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus

23. It is chilling to realize that the capacities expanded by technology "have given those with the knowledge and especially the economic resources to use them, an impressive dominance over the whole of humanity and the entire world. Never has humanity had such power over itself, yet nothing ensures that it will be used wisely, particularly when we consider how it is currently being used. In whose hands does all this power lie, or will it eventually end up? It is extremely risky for a small part of humanity to have it"

Nehemiah 7-13: The wall of Jerusalem was finally rebuilt and doors were set in place in the wall. In the seventh month of the lunar calendar Nehemiah assembled all the people and read to them the Book of the Law of Moses. This was the first time that most of the people had heard the words of Moses' Book. The people were grateful to God and praised him with great happiness. The people also promised God that they would serve him more faithfully in the future. But while Nehemiah was away on a visit  to the king the people and leaders became careless about the Law. When  Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem he brought the people back to proper observance of the Law
Dear God, may we find joy and strength in reading the Bible and may the world have more good leaders like Nehemiah

Psalm 19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Acts 2.11-18: When people heard the apostles' group speaking in many different languages, some said the apostles were drunk. Peter stood up with the Eleven and said to the crowd: These people are not drunk. It's only 9am .... too early to drink. What is happening is what God said through the prophet Joel: 'I, the Lord, will pour out my spirit on all peoples. They will prophesy and see visions. I will pour out my spirit on everyone'

Jesus replied "Don't you remember what King David and his followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which only the priests were allowed to eat. I am Master of the Sabbath"

22. Without a doubt, the natural resources required by technology, such as lithium, silicon and so many others, are not unlimited, yet the greater problem is the ideology underlying an obsession: to increase human power beyond anything imaginable, before which nonhuman reality is a mere resource at its disposal. Everything that exists ceases to be a gift for which we should be thankful, esteem and cherish, and instead becomes a slave, prey to any whim of the human mind and its capacities.

21. In recent years, we have been able to confirm this diagnosis, even as we have witnessed a new advance of the above paradigm. Artificial intelligence and the latest technological innovations start with the notion of a human being with no limits, whose abilities and possibilities can be infinitely expanded thanks to technology. In this way, the technocratic paradigm monstrously feeds upon itself.

Yesterday Jane and Flora from Voice for Prisoners and I joined staff from the Indonesian Consulate for a lunch time meeting ....most encouraging as we shared ideas about how to stop HK's 160,000 Indonesian domestic helpers from being tricked into drug trafficking. The Consulate staff were also pleased to know that over the past few years MercyHK has helped dozens of Indonesian domestic workers to find accommodation ... especially those who were Covid positive.

The generations to come will know that we watched this human tragedy unfold over social media and news channels. We will not be able to say we did not know. History will ask why the world did not have the courage to act decisively and stop this hell on Earth - from this report by the head of a UN agency

Well, yesterday I tried to do something. ... I stood outside the US Consulate with 2 signs:

Dear Holy Spirit, please bless the Synod in Rome!

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
20. In Laudato Si, I offered a brief resume of the technocratic paradigm underlying the current process of environmental decay. It is "a certain way of understanding human life and activity that has gone awry, to the serious detriment of the world around us". Deep down, it consists in thinking "as if reality, goodness and truth automatically flow from technological and economic power as such". As a logical consequence, it then becomes easy "to accept the idea of infinite or unlimited growth, which proves so attractive to economists, financiers and experts in technology".

Jesus knew that these people believed he could help them, so he said to the paralyzed man "My friend, your sins are forgiven". Some religious leaders in the crowd were thinking to themselves that Jesus was wrong to say he could forgive sins. So Jesus said to the leaders "Which is easier: to say 'Your sins are forgiven', or to say 'Get up and walk'?" Then to prove that he had authority to forgive sins, he said to the paralyzed man "Get up, pick up your bed and go home". The man got up, picked up his stretcher and went home. The crowd praised God for what they had seen

Nehemiah 1-4: Nehemiah was cupbearer for the king of Persia. He heard how the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem were facing many difficulties. Nehemiah received permission from the king to go to Jerusalem and help rebuild the city. Nehemiah then supervised the re-building of Jerusalem's wall, even though some foreigners in Jerusalem made fun of him. Acts 1.6-11: On the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus said to his apostles "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses in every part of the world". As he said this, he was lifted up while they watched. A cloud took him from their sight. Then two angels appeared to them and said "Jesus who has been taken up from you, will come back some day in the same way as you have seen him leave"
Jesus, help me be your witness by the way I think and speak and live

Luke 5.12-16: In one town that Jesus went to, a leper fell on his face and pleaded "Sir, if you want to, you can heal me". Jesus stretched out  his hand, touched him, and said "Of course I want to!  Be healed!" And the leprosy left him at once. Jesus' reputation continued to grow.  Large crowds gathered to hear him speak and to have their sicknesses cured. But afterwards Jesus would always go to a quiet place where he could be alone and pray
Jesus, please help me understand that you want sick people to be healed

After my visit to Lo Wu prison yesterday afternoon, I was very tired and looked forward to a seat on the train for the 30 minute trip to Hung Hom. But before I could sit on one of the special "Seniors" seats on the crowded train, a local guy around 40-50 just grabbed the last seat. I stood directly in front of him to try to shame him, but his dark glasses and falling asleep did not let my message get through. But then after a few stations when a very elderly local lady and her 3-4 year old grand daughter were left standing I woke (?) the man and reminded him he was sitting in a "special needs" seat which he should give to the little girl and grandmother. He was not too happy but vacated the seat. Then he started giving me a verbal blast ....at which a big young man from some distance away in the carriage made his way to my shoulder and said "Father, I recognise you from TV ...you are the Yau Ma Tei priest ....let me handle this". At which, fearing a fight, I calmed the young man and things more or less settled down apart from an occasional running commentary by the 40-50 guy ...who got off at Hung Hom when I got off. I offered to shake his hand but for some reason he was not interested. (All of the above was in Cantonese)
