Tues Nov 7

I read every word of this most informative article about the background of the Gaza situation: Why Israel wants to erase history

At the High Court yesterday a local HK woman was given bail because MercyHK's Lucia Leung and I went surety for her. Thank you Jesus! (And thank you Lucia! ....we are now looking after 6 bail people!)

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
31. This situation has to do not only with physics or biology, but also with the economy and the way we conceive it. The mentality of maximum gain at minimal cost, disguised in terms of reasonableness, progress and illusory promises, makes impossible any sincere concern for our common home and any real preoccupation about assisting the poor and the needy discarded by our society. In recent years, we can note that, astounded and excited by the promises of any number of false prophets, the poor themselves at times fall prey to the illusion of a world that is not being built for them.

Tobit 7: When Tobias and Raphael reached Media, they went to the home of their relative Raguel, father of Sarah. Tobias asked Raguel for Sarah to be his wife. Raguel told Tobias that 7 previous bridegrooms had died. Tobias repeated his request, and Sarah became his wife. That night everyone prayed for the safety of the couple.
Dear God, please bless everyone being married this month

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my help. I will always praise you.

Acts 4.1-12: While Peter was talking to the crowd, some religious leaders and soldiers came and arrested Peter and John. The next day the leaders held a meeting and asked the prisoners: "By what power and by whose name did you heal the crippled beggar?" Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied "The cripple is able to stand up perfectly healthy because he was healed by Jesus the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. Salvation comes no other way. Only by the name of Jesus can we be saved"
Jesus, your name means "God
saves", you are indeed the Saviour of the world

Listen

Luke 6.41-45: In his teaching, Jesus said "Why do you notice the splinter in someone else's eye, but don't notice the plank in your own eye?  Deal with your own faults before you start correcting other people. A good tree does not produce bad fruit. A bad tree does not produce good fruit. The fruit tells you what sort of tree it came from. So with people: their words and actions tell you what their heart is like - good or bad.
Jesus, please help me be a good person, producing good fruit

Listen

Reflection:  How to reconcile Jesus' words about trees and fruit with the words of Barack Obama: "Sometimes good people do bad stuff ... and sometimes bad people do good stuff"?!

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
30. One need but think of the momentary excitement raised by the money received in exchange for the deposit of nuclear waste in a certain place. The house that one could have bought with that money has turned into a grave due to the diseases that were then unleashed. And I am not saying this, moved by a overflowing imagination, but on the basis of something we have seen. It could be said that this is an extreme example, but in these cases there is no room for speaking of "lesser" damages, for it is precisely the amassing of damages considered tolerable that has brought us to the situation in which we now find ourselves.

Tobit 5-6: Tobit told Tobias to find a trustworthy man to go with him to Media. Tobias found Raphael, but Tobias did not know Raphael was an angel. On the first night of their journey, Tobias and Raphael caught a large fish. Raphael told Tobias to keep the gall, liver and heart of the fish. Raphael explained that the gall would cure the blindness of Tobit, and that the liver and heart would drive away the demon Asmodeus.
Dear God, thank you for the help we receive from your angels

My recording of this reading

Psalm 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Acts 3.9-16: When people saw the former crippled man walking, they couldn't believe their eyes. So Peter said to them "Why are you so surprised? Do you think John and I made this cripple walk? It is by our faith in Jesus that this man has been restored to health. Jesus is the Holy One, the Just One, the Prince of Life whom you handed over to Pilate for crucifixion. But God raised him from the dead
Jesus, Prince of Life, please increase my faith in you. Please give me a faith that can bring your  healing to handicapped people

Luke 6.27-38: Jesus said to the people "Love your enemies. Do good to people who hate you. Pray for people who are unkind to you. Treat others as you would like them to treat you. Be compassionate as your heavenly Father is compassionate. Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Grant pardon, and you will be pardoned. Give, and there will be gifts for you. The amount you measure out is the amount you will be given back"
Jesus, bless ....(name)....who was unkind to me

Australia's Foreign Minister: Israel needs to listen to friends ((and so does the US which continues to support Israel's GENOCIDE in Gaza)) *** Israel's bombs on Gaza have cost US$2 billion

Last Tuesday I met a man from an African county recently arrested at HK airport with drugs in his body. He said he did this thing because he was desperate to get money for his family. He asked me to help him inform his wife where he was. I was able to send her a w/app. She did not know he had gone to HK and did not know he was in detention. I assured her he was safe and well and that HK prisons are among the best in world. I also asked her about their three children, aged 7, 5 and 3 which the husband had told me about. She said the two older ones had stopped going to school some time ago because the family could not pay school fees ... and that the family also could not pay rent and faced eviction. Last Friday, thanks to a kind friend, I was able to send her HK$4,000 which covers fees for half a year and pays their rent for the time being.

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
29. The ethical decadence of real power is disguised thanks to marketing and false information, useful tools in the hands of those with greater resources to employ them to shape public opinion. With the help of these means, whenever plans are made to undertake a project involving significant changes in the environment or high levels of contamination, one raises the hopes of the people of that area by speaking of the local progress that it will be able to generate or of the potential for economic growth, employment and human promotion that it would mean for their children. Yet in reality there does not seem to be any true interest in the future of these people, since they are not clearly told that the project will result in the clearing of their lands, a decline in the quality of their lives, a desolate and less habitable landscape lacking in life, the joy of community and hope for the future; in addition to the global damage that eventually compromises many other people as well.

c.f. readings for Sunday 31

Ezekiel 33.-34: God told Ezekiel to say this to Israel's leaders: "Punishment is coming for you shepherds who have fed yourselves but not looked after the sheep. You have failed to make the weak sheep strong, or to care for the sick ones. You have failed to bring back stray sheep or look for lost sheep. On the contrary, you have been cruel to the sheep and treated them badly. Therefore I will look after my flock myself. I will rescue them from where they have been scattered. I will look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the injured, and make the weak strong. I will also judge the sheep themselves. I will judge the fat sheep which have bullied the weak sheep. I will raise up a special shepherd and put him in charge of all my sheep."
Lord, please help all leaders care for their people, like Jesus the Good Shepherd

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.
Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

1 Thessalonians 1.7-2.12: You are a great example to other believers, since it was from you that the word of the Lord spread to many places. Everyone knows how we planted the Good News in your hearts, and how you broke with idolatry and became servants of the living God. Let me remind you how we loved and served you, like loving parents caring for their dear children.
Jesus, thank you for the people who nurtured me as a Christian

Matthew 23.1-36: Jesus told the people to respect their religious leaders, but he condemned the religious leaders
-  for not practising what they preached
- for doing things just to attract attention
- for craving front seats and places of honor
- for being concerned only with externals.

Jesus called the religious leaders
-  "hypocrites"
- "blind guides"
- "tombs that look good on the outside but are full of dead bones".

Jesus, help religious leaders be good people

 Reflection on the above readings:

According to many authorities - UN, Oxfam, Red Cross, MSF, Amnesty etc - what is happening now in Gaza is GENOCIDE ...which is why I used the word "Genocide" in my protest outside the U.S. Consulate 2 days ago. The evil that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, with US support, is now perpetrating in Gaza will breed more more and more evil and violence against the beloved Jewish people, and against the US, in the Middle East and around the world. What Hamas did on October 7 was a great evil. But that evil has been far surpassed by Netanyahu's evil in Gaza. DEAR GOD, PLEASE STOP THIS MADNESS!

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
28. We need to rethink among other things the question of human power, its meaning and its limits. For our power has frenetically increased in a few decades. We have made impressive and awesome technological advances, and we have not realized that at the same time we have turned into highly dangerous beings, capable of threatening the lives of many beings and our own survival. Today it is worth repeating the ironic comment of Solovyov about an "age which was so advanced as to be actually the last one".  We need lucidity and honesty in order to recognize in time that our power and the progress we are producing are turning against us.

Tobit 4: Tobit said to his son Tobias: "When I die give me an honorable burial. Always honor your mother. When she dies, bury her at my side. Be faithful to the Lord all your days. Always be willing to help poor people. Give your bread to those who are hungry and your clothes to those who are naked. Ask advice of every wise person. Bless the Lord God in everything.  Beg him to guide your ways and bring your paths and purposes to a successful conclusion. Avoid all loose conduct. Do to no one what you would not want done to you. Choose a wife from our tribe, from our kin in Media. Go to Media, to my friend Gabael. Many years ago I left 10 talents of silver with him. This money is yours."

Acts 3.1-10: One afternoon about 3pm, Peter and John went to the Temple for prayer. A beggar asked them for money. He was crippled from birth. Peter said to him "I don't have any silver or gold. But I do have something to give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!" Peter then took him by the hand and helped him to stand up. Immediately, his feet and ankles became firm and he could walk. He was so happy he started jumping around. He went into the Temple, praising God

Luke 6.20-26: Jesus said to his disciples "Blessed are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry: you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now: you shall be happy. Blessed are you when people hate you because of me: your reward will be great in heaven. But alas for you who are rich: your consolation is only in this world. Alas for you who have plenty to eat: you shall go hungry. Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep".
Jesus, please help me to give more time and importance to the things that really matter

Reflection:  Why are Luke's "Beatitudes" so different from those in Matthew? Maybe because Jesus spoke the same message more than once and in different places .... and maybe he changed his message to suit different types of people who were listening?

27. For this reason, a healthy ecology is also the result of interaction between human beings and the environment, as occurs in the indigenous cultures and has occurred for centuries in different regions of the earth. Human groupings have often "created" an environment,  reshaping it in some way without destroying it or endangering it. The great present-day problem is that the technocratic paradigm has destroyed that healthy and harmonious relationship. In any event, the indispensable need to move beyond that paradigm, so damaging and destructive, will not be found in a denial of the human being, but include the interaction of natural systems "with social systems"

Tobit 2-3: One night when Tobit was resting, sparrow droppings fell into his eyes and he became blind. Some people made fun of Tobit for his misfortune. Tobit humbly entrusted his life to the Lord. At the same time as Tobit was praying, Sarah was praying in the town of Media. Sarah had been given in marriage 7 times but all of her bridegrooms had been killed by the demon Asmodeus before the couple could make love. The Lord heard the prayers of Tobit and Sarah and sent the angel Raphael to help them.

Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you.
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

Acts 2.37-47: The crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we do?" Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". That day about 3,000 people were baptized. These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to a life of sharing and caring, to the Breaking of Bread, and to prayer. Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group

Luke 6.12-16: Jesus went to the hills to pray. He spent a whole night praying. In the morning he called all his disciples together. He chose 12 of them and called them "apostles": Peter and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon, Judas son of James - and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor. Jesus and the 12 came down from the hill to a place of level ground. Gathered there were his many disciples and a large crowd of people from all over the country who had come to hear him and to be healed of diseases. People in the crowd tried to touch Jesus because power came out of him that cured everyone

Yesterday afternoon and last night a team from Green Bean Media spent much time at Temple Street preparing a YouTube report on the work of MercyHK. Please check their many excellent videos

Isaiah 25:

On Mount Zion in Jerusalem, the Lord will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines.
On this mountain he will delete Death. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek. Lord, you are my God, I extol you, I praise your name. You, Lord, are a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in distress.
Lord, please give hope and courage to people who are sad and troubled in the world today

Mark 16.1-8: Jesus died on Friday afternoon. Early on Sunday morning, Mary of Magdala and two other women went to Jesus' tomb to anoint his body with spices. They had been wondering how they would roll away the large stone, but when they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away. When they went into the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe and they were full of awe. But he said to them  "Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He has risen from the dead. Go and tell his disciples he will see them in Galilee"
Jesus, when life seems hopeless, like a dead body in a tomb, please help us remember how you rose from the dead .... and you can help us "rise" from any "hopeless" situation

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

Happy All Saints Day!

When the Saints Go Marching In!

Articles are beginning to appear about the bias of Western media, especially US media,  when reporting the Israel-Hamas war. e.g. this article claiming the BBC is too lenient on Israel and dehumanising Palestinians. And last night when I checked Australia's ABC there were three reports, all heavily pro-Israel: 01 02 03 ... 03 has these words: Retired Army Major General Mick Ryan has told ABC News channel that "unfortunately it appears that more civilian casualties are inevitable as part of these operations".  He said the Israeli Defense Forces and Hamas are "two very different organisations" with one a professional army that is armed very well and tries to fight by the laws of armed conflict, while the other is a "terrorist organisation that is equipped with small arms and explosives". Israel fights "by the laws of armed conflict"???? No mention of more than 3,000 children killed in Gaza by Israel rockets!  ... which is why each day I now check Al Jazeera for news from the other side of the fence to try to get a more balanced picture of the real situation. *** My protest outside US Consulate

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
25. Contrary to this technocratic paradigm, we say that the world that surrounds us is not an object of exploitation, unbridled use and unlimited ambition. Nor can we claim that nature is a mere "setting" in which we develop our lives and our projects. For "we are part of nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction with it", and thus "we do not look at the world from without but from within"

Revelation 7.9-17:
I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, and language. They were standing in front of the throne, with palms in their hands. They shouted: "Victory to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb".
One of the elders told me who these people are: "These are the people who have been through the great persecution. They now serve God day and night in his sanctuary. The Lamb is their Shepherd. He leads them to springs of living water. God has wiped away all tears from their eyes"

Psalm 24: The Lord's is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. It is he who set it on the seas; on the waters he made it firm. And God's love has even more in store for us in the future: we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. This is why we must try to live good lives. We must try to be as good as Christ.
Jesus, please help me be more like you

Matthew 5.1-12: Jesus said to the crowds: Blessed are poor and simple of heart people. They belong to the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are people who are going through great sorrow. Their hearts will be filled with peace. Blessed are people who lead just and honest lives. They will see the victory of goodness. Blessed are people who show mercy to others. God will be merciful to them. Blessed are people who have a clean heart. They will see God. Blessed are people who are peacemakers. They are God's children. Blessed are people who are persecuted for the cause of right. They will receive a great reward in heaven.
Jesus, please help me be merciful and kind and just
