38.
In the medium-term, globalization favours spontaneous cultural interchanges,
greater mutual knowledge and processes of integration of peoples, which end up
provoking a multilateralism "from below" and not simply one determined
by the elites of power. The demands that rise up from below throughout the
world, where activists from very different countries help and support one
another, can end up pressuring the sources of power. It
is to be hoped that this will happen with respect to the climate crisis.
For this reason, I reiterate that "unless citizens control political power
- national, regional and municipal - it will not be possible to control damage
to the environment".

Tobit
14: Tobit was 62 when he went blind.
He died when he was 112. After he was cured of blindness,
he continued his custom of helping the poor. Before he died he said to Tobias:
"Take your family and move to Media,
since Nineveh will soon see war and strife.
Serve God sincerely, always be willing to help poor people." After Tobit and Anna died, Tobias
moved to Media and lived with Raguel his father in law.
Dear God, please help me
imitate Tobit
in his kindness to poor people
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
34: I will bless the Lord at all times,
his praise always on my lips.
In the Lord my soul shall make its boast,
the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us
praise his name.
I sought the Lord and he answered me.
From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those
who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is
good.
They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.
Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and
prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Acts
5.21-33:
When the leaders had their big meeting later
that same morning, they sent for the apostles to be brought from prison. The police went to the prison, then came back
and reported to the leaders "We found that the prison was properly
locked, and the guards were on duty. But when we unlocked the door, there
was no one inside". Then a man arrived at the meeting with the
news "At this very moment, the men you imprisoned are now in the
Temple preaching to the people". The police again arrested the apostles and
brought them to the meeting.
When the main religious leader reminded them of his previous warning not
to preach, Peter and the apostles replied "Obedience to God comes
before obedience to men. God raised Jesus up to be the Savior. We are
witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God gives to those who obey
him". This made the leaders so angry that they
wanted to kill the apostles
Jesus, please help me put obedience to you
before all other obediences

Luke 8.1-3:
Jesus went to many towns and villages,
proclaiming the Good News.
The 12 apostles went with him, as did a group of women who had been healed
of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna and
several others.
These women used their own money to support Jesus and the apostles
Jesus, thank you for all the women who support
the spread of the Good News in today's world

37. More than saving the old
multilateralism, it appears that the current challenge is to reconfigure and
recreate it, taking into account the new world situation. I invite you to
recognize that "many groups and organizations within civil society help to
compensate for the shortcomings of the international community, its lack of
coordination in complex situations, and its lack of attention to fundamental
human rights". For example,
the Ottawa Process against the use, production and manufacture of antipersonnel
mines is one example that shows how civil society with its organizations is
capable of creating effective dynamics that the United Nations cannot. In
this way, the principle of subsidiarity is applied also to the global-local
relationship

Tobit praised and thanked God in these words:
"Blessed be God who lives

he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made,

Acts
5.17-21: The religious leaders were jealous of the
apostles.
The leaders had the apostles arrested and put in prison. But that night an angel of the Lord opened the
prison gates
and led them out of the prison, saying to them:
"Go and stand in the Temple, and tell the people all about this new
Life". The apostles went to the Temple at dawn and

Luke
7.36-50: A religious leader invited Jesus for a meal.
A woman who had a bad name heard that Jesus was at the leader's home.
She entered the house and knelt behind Jesus, crying. Her tears fell on
Jesus' feet and she wiped them away with her hair. She covered his feet
with kisses, and put ointment on them.
The leader was thinking "If Jesus is a prophet, he would know what
sort of woman is now touching him". So Jesus said to the leader "I
came into your house and you did not follow the custom of pouring water on
my feet. But this woman has poured out her tears on my feet. You gave me no welcoming kiss, but she has
been covering my feet with kisses. You gave me no welcoming oil on my
head, but she has anointed my feet. And I tell you that her sins must have been
forgiven, or she would not have shown such great love. People who are forgiven little,
show little love"
Jesus, please forgive my sins. Help me

The one-sided war in Gaza is different from other wars.... there
are brave journalists in Gaza (who have lost more than 20 colleagues in the
bombing) who are recording every moment of the bombing of hospitals ...every
moment of tens of thousands of people on the road to nowhere from northern
Gaza. Never before has a war been "live" to the extent this one is.
Which makes it hard for us to lead normal lives as we know so clearly that
right at this moment how people are suffering and being killed. What can we do?
We can pray ... we can fast ... we can keep up to date with the latest truthful
(not fake) news ... we can respectfully encourage others to become more
concerned about Gaza ... we can use the internet and social media to try to
influence the USA to stop Netanyahu's madness ...we can financially support
NGOs like MSF which are desperately trying to help people in Gaza .... we can,
if the law allows, join protests against this Genocide. ***

global crises are being squandered when they could be the occasions to bring
about beneficial changes. This is what happened in the 2007-2008 financial
crisis and again in the Covid-19 crisis. For
the actual strategies developed worldwide in the wake of those crises fostered
greater individualism, less integration and increased freedom for the truly
powerful, who always find a way to escape unscathed".

Wisdom 10-19: Wisdom
has been present in the world since the beginning of time. Wisdom has always
been a close friend of good people. Wise
people see God in the beauty of creation. Foolish people are blind to
God's presence in creation. Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise
people try to be good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness

Psalms
61-65: O
God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at
rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble.
Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My
body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your
love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember
you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care
for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on
earth.

Thessalonians 4.13-18: You
asked us about the situation of people who have died. Do not mourn in an
unhealthy way for them, like people who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died
and rose again, and that it will be the same for everyone who dies in God's
friendship: God will give them life with Jesus. They will live in God's House
for ever. With
thoughts such as these you should comfort one another in times of mourning.

Matthew 25.1-13: Jesus told this parable to his disciples: The kingdom of heaven will be like this: Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were sensible: the foolish ones did take their lamps, but they brought no oil, whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as well as their lamps. The bridegroom was late, and they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight there was a cry, "The bridegroom is here! Go out and meet him." At this, all those bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps, and the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, "Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out." But they replied, "There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sell it and buy some for yourselves." They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding hall and the door was closed. The other bridesmaids arrived later. "Lord, Lord," they said "open the door for us." But he replied, "I tell you solemnly, I do not know you." So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour.

Sat Nov 11
105 years ago today, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, World War 1 officially ended, after a conflict that involved 65 million men in battle, left nearly 10 million killed, 21 million wounded, nearly seven million civilian deaths. May the Good Lord help our world avoid war!
Not forgetting that the Treaty of Versailles which ended World War 1 was a major cause of World War 2 (because it treated Germany so harshly) and was the reason for China's young leaders turning away from the West and turning to Marxism/Russia (because China also was treated so badly - see May 4 Movement)
Some people, even some good people, are saying that the deaths of
children in Gaza are unavoidable because Hamas is using children as human
shields. But what about a gunman in the US who is in a classroom using young
children as a shield. OK to kill the children to get the gunman? Of course
not! *** Only one news agency has

35.
It is not helpful to confuse multilateralism with a world authority concentrated
in one person or in an elite with excessive power: "When we talk about the
possibility of some form of world authority regulated by law, we need not
necessarily think of a personal authority". We are speaking
above all of "more effective world organizations, equipped with the power
to provide for the global common good, the elimination of hunger and poverty and
the sure defence of fundamental human rights". The issue is that
they must be endowed with real authority, in such a way as to "provide
for" the attainment of certain essential goals. In this way, there could
come about a multilateralism that is not dependent on changing political
conditions or the interests of a certain few, and possesses a stable efficacy.

"Sir, I am not worthy to receive you into my house. This is why I

Mistaken notions also develop about the concept of "meritocracy",
which becomes seen as a "merited" human power to which everything must
be submitted, under the rule of those born with greater possibilities and
advantages. A healthy approach to the value of hard work, the development of
one's native abilities and a praiseworthy spirit of initiative is one thing, but
if one does not seek a genuine equality of opportunity, "meritocracy"
can easily become a screen that further consolidates the privileges of a few
with great power. In this perverse
logic, why should they care about the damage done to our common home, if they
feel securely shielded by the financial resources that they have earned by their
abilities and effort?

Tobit 8: Before Tobias went to bed with Sarah,
he remembered what Raphael had said. Tobias put some of the fish's heart and liver
on burning incense. The smell of the fish made Asmodeus flee.
Tobias with Sarah then prayed to the Lord:
"You are blessed O God of our fathers.
Let the heavens and all creatures bless you,
you who created Adam and Eve. I now take Sarah as my wife
not for any lustful reason, but out of true love. Please have pity on us and bring us to old age together."
Then they went to bed. Meanwhile Raguel, who feared Tobias would die,
prepared a secret grave. But when Raguel sent a maid to the room of
Tobias and Sarah
the maid found they were alive and sleeping peacefully. Then Raguel too praised God:
"Thank you, my God, for making me happy.

I will always thank and praise you. You are the strength of your people Israel.
Save your people. Be our shepherd and carry us for ever.
Lord, please help people who
are in big danger today

Acts
4.13-22: The religious leaders were astonished that
two uneducated men like Peter and John could speak so confidently. The
leaders also realized that a miracle had taken place: the crippled man was
standing next to Peter and John. The leaders gave Peter and John a formal legal
warning not to speak in future about Jesus.
Peter and John replied "Which is right? To obey you, or obey God? We
cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard". The leaders released the two apostles. They
were afraid to punish them since all the people were giving glory to God
for the miracle that had happened
Jesus, please help me obey you always

Luke
6.46-49:
In his teaching, Jesus said "Why do you call
me 'Lord', yet do not do what I ask you to do? Anyone who comes to me and listens to my words
and puts them into practice is like a man who built his house on a solid
foundation. That house was so well
built that even floods could not damage it. But anyone who listens and does not put my
words into practice is like a man who built his house without a
foundation. As soon as floods came, the house collapsed"
Jesus, please help me put your words into
practice; help me apply them in my daily life
