Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
49. Following several Conferences with scarce results, and the disappointment of COP25 in Madrid (2019), it was hoped that this inertia would be reversed at COP26 in Glasgow (2021). In effect, its result was to relaunch the Paris Agreement, put on hold by the overall effects of the pandemic. Furthermore, there was an abundance of "recommendations" whose actual effect was hardly foreseeable. Proposals tending to ensure a rapid and effective transition to alternative and less polluting forms of energy made no progress.

Judith 13: When the banquet was over at a late hour, Judith was alone with Holofernes in his tent. Holofernes lay drunk on his bed. After praying to God for strength, Judith used Holofernes' sword to cut off his head. She went outside and gave the head to her maid. Her maid put the head in her  bag. Judith and her maid then left the camp as they usually did when they went to pray early in the morning. They went straight to Bethulia and showed Holofernes' head to the people. The people were overcome with joy and praised God for what he had done by the hand of a woman.
Dear God, please give people the courage to confront injustice

My recording of this reading

Psalms 61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

Acts 10.1-48: Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed in the town of Caesarea. He and his household prayed, loved God, and helped the local people. One morning Cornelius had a vision that Peter would visit him. In another town, Peter was instructed by the Lord to visit Cornelius. Peter preached God's message to Cornelius and his household. While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners. Jewish believers  who had accompanied Peter were astonished that the Holy Spirit would come down on non-Jewish people
Holy Spirit, please come down on all peoples everywhere!

Luke 10.1-9: Jesus appointed 72 disciples to go ahead of him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them "The harvest is rich, but the laborers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to his harvest. When you go into a town, cure those in it who are sick, and say:  'The kingdom of God is very near to you' "
Jesus, please inspire more people to make the spreading of the Good News their life's work

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
48. The Paris Agreement presents a broad and ambitious objective: to keep the increase of average global temperatures to under 2° C with respect to preindustrial levels, and with the aim of decreasing them to 1.5° C. Work is still under way to consolidate concrete procedures for monitoring and to facilitate general criteria for comparing the objectives of the different countries. This makes it difficult to achieve a more objective (quantitative) evaluation of the real results.

Judith 12: Holofernes allowed Judith and her maid to stay in a special tent each night, and each morning to go to a spring near Bethulia to wash and pray. After 3 days, Holofernes held a banquet for his staff. He invited Judith to the banquet with the aim of seducing her. Holofernes was so captivated by Judith's beauty that he kept on drinking wine until he was drunk. All the while Judith kept praying to God for strength and help.
Dear God, please give me a bit more of Judith's faith and courage

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready.I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength, and each morning acclaim your love.
O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

Acts 9.32-35: Peter visited churches in many areas. When he went to Lydda, he saw a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bed-ridden for 8 years. Peter said to him "Aeneas, Jesus Christ cures you. Get up and fold up your sleeping mat". Aeneas got up immediately. The people of that area who saw him, were converted to the Lord

Luke 9.51-58: When the time came for Jesus to finish his life on earth, he resolutely took the road to Jerusalem. As Jesus and his disciples traveled along, they met a man who said to him "I will follow you wherever you go". The countdown has begun for my next overseas anti-drug campaign trip. I'm due to be away from after Christmas, returning before LNY. Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
47. COP21 in Paris (2015) represented another significant moment, since it generated an agreement that involved everyone. It can be considered as a new beginning, given the failure to meet the goals previously set. The agreement took effect on 4 November 2016. Albeit a binding agreement, not all its dispositions are obligations in the strict sense, and some of them leave ample room for discretion. In any case, properly speaking, there are no provisions for sanctions in the case of unfulfilled commitments, nor effective instruments to ensure their fulfilment. It also provides for a certain flexibility in the case of developing countries.

c.f. readings for Feast of Christ the King

Matthew 25: 31-46 (a): Jesus said to his disciples: When I come in glory at the end of the world, all peoples of all times will be gathered in front of me. I will separate them, like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. I will place the sheep on my right, the goats on my left. I will say to those on my right "Come and enter my kingdom. For I was hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you made me welcome. I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to see me".
 Listen

Matthew 25.31-46 (b): Then those good people on my right will say "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you? When did we see you thirsty and give you a drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, naked and clothe you, sick or in prison, and visit you?" I will answer "Each time you helped and cared for a poor person, you helped and cared for me".
Listen

Matthew 25: 31-46 (c): Then I will say to those on my left "Go away from me and join Satan and his angels in hell. For I was hungry, and you never gave me food. I was thirsty, and you never gave me anything to drink. I was a stranger, and you never made me welcome, naked, and you never clothed me, sick and in prison, and you never visited me".
Listen

Matthew 25: 31-46 (d): Those on my left will then ask "Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or naked, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?" I will answer "Each time you refused to help and care for a poor person, you refused to help and care for me". Those on the left will then go to eternal punishment. Those on the right will go to eternal life.
Jesus, please help me do more for poor people. Make me understand that when I help a poor person, I help you

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
46. Afterwards, it was proposed to create a mechanism regarding the loss and damage caused by climate change, which recognizes as those chiefly responsible the richer countries and seeks to compensate for the loss and damage that climate change produces in the more vulnerable countries. It was not yet a matter of financing the "adaptation" of those countries, but of compensating them for damage already incurred. This question was the subject of important discussions at various Conferences.

Judith 11: Judith was very clever when she spoke to Holofernes. She told him that the Jews would be abandoned by God if they broke God's laws. She said that the Jews planned to break God's laws in a few days by eating consecrated foods. She said she would monitor the situation each day and let Holofernes know when the Jews were abandoned by God and ready to be attacked by Holofernes. Judith's words and beauty won over Holofernes and his staff and they agreed to her suggestions.
Dear God, please give us wisdom and tact for dealing with difficult people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Acts 9.20-31: After a few days, Paul began preaching in the prayer halls that Jesus is the Son of God. People were amazed at Paul's conversion. As time passed, the Jews planned to kill Paul. Paul heard of this and decided to leave the city. The Jews kept watch at the city gates to stop him leaving. Then one night he was able to escape: some disciples lowered him in a basket from the city wall. He went to Jerusalem and began preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. Soon another plot was made to kill him. Therefore the disciples sent him to Tarsus. After this the churches throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria were left in peace. They steadily grew, strengthened by the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit, please strengthen me, as you strengthened Paul and the first believers

Listen

Luke 9.28-36One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain to pray. On the mountain, while Jesus was praying, his whole appearance changed. His clothes became brilliant as lightning. The prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him". When the voice had finished speaking, the disciples saw only Jesus in his normal appearance
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer

Judith 10: Judith put on her most beautiful clothes and jewelry. Then she and her maid headed for the Assyrian camp. The soldiers took her to meet Holofernes.

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forget God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives

Acts 9.1-19: Paul kept up his campaign against the Lord's disciples. He got the ok to arrest followers of the Way in Damascus. But on his way to Damascus, a light from heaven surrounded him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying "Paul, Paul, why are you persecuting me?" He said "Who are you, Lord?" The voice replied "I am Jesus, and you are persecuting me. Go into Damascus and you will be told what to do". Paul's eyes were open, but for more than a day he was without his sight, and he ate and drank nothing. The Lord got Ananias, a disciple in Damascus, to visit Paul and pray for him. The Lord said to Ananias "Paul  is my chosen instrument to bring my name to non-Jews and Jews. He will suffer much for me". Ananias went to Paul and prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Straight away, Paul could see again. Then Ananias baptized him

Luke 9.22-25: Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he would suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life. Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
44. For several decades now, representatives of more than 190 countries have met periodically to address the issue of climate change. The 1992 Rio de Janeiro Conference led to the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a treaty that took effect when the necessary ratification on the part of the signatories concluded in 1994. These States meet annually in the Conference of the Parties (COP), the highest decision-making body. Some of these Conferences were failures, like that of Copenhagen (2009), while others made it possible to take important steps forward, like COP3 in Kyoto (1997). Its significant Protocol set the goal of reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions by 5% with respect to 1990. The deadline was the year 2012, but this, clearly, was not achieved.

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
43. All this presupposes the development of a new procedure for decision-making and legitimizing those decisions, since the one put in place several decades ago is not sufficient nor does it appear effective. In this framework, there would necessarily be required spaces for conversation, consultation, arbitration, conflict resolution and supervision, and, in the end, a sort of increased "democratization" in the global context, so that the various situations can be expressed and included. It is no longer helpful for us to support institutions in order to preserve the rights of the more powerful without caring for those of all.

Holofernes seized control of Bethulia's water supply springs, thinking that thirst would force the Israelites to surrender. Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.

Acts 7.55 - 8.3: Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand. "I can see heaven thrown open", he said, "and Jesus standing at the right hand of God". At this, the religious leaders at the meeting covered their ears with their hands. They sent Stephen out of the city and stoned him. The false witnesses (who were required to throw the first stones) put down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Paul. As they were stoning him, Stephen prayed "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit". Then he knelt down and prayed "Lord, do not hold this sin against them". Then he died. Paul entirely approved of the killing. That day a bitter persecution started against the church in Jerusalem and everyone except the apostles fled to the countryside. Paul  began working for the destruction of the church. He went from house to house arresting men and women and sending them to prison
Jesus, thank you for the example of Stephen who, like yourself, forgave those who were killing him

Luke 9.1-6: Jesus called the 12 apostles together. He gave them power and authority to cast out devils and to heal sick people. He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. So they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and healing sick people
Jesus,  help me understand how some people have a special gift for healing sick people....and how I can better pray to heal sick people

Reflection: Healing the sick was .... and should still be ... a fundamental part of spreading the Good News
