Tues Dec 5

Yesterday afternoon I went to Lai King prison for young women ... where I was sad to meet some young HK local women who had been recruited/tricked to go other countries and bring drugs back to HK.

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
55. Despite the many negotiations and agreements, global emissions continue to increase. Certainly, it could be said that, without those agreements, they would have increased even more. Still, in other themes related to the environment, when there was a will, very significant results were obtained, as was the case with the protection of the ozone layer. Yet, the necessary transition towards clean energy sources such as wind and solar energy, and the abandonment of fossil fuels, is not progressing at the necessary speed. Consequently, whatever is being done risks being seen only as a ploy to distract attention.

Esther 4: When Mordecai heard about Haman's plan, Mordecai asked Esther to appeal to Ahasuerus for help. Mordecai and Esther both knew that to approach the king without an invitation was a crime punishable by death, unless the king saw fit to welcome an uninvited person. So they prayed to God to move the heart of Ahasuerus to welcome Esther.
Dear God, please move the hearts of rulers to care for their people

My recording of this reading

Psalms 73-77: Sometimes when I see how bad people prosper, I wonder what's the use in trying to be good? But then I realize that everyone someday has to pay the bill for any evil they have bought in the world. Sometimes when I see our world and religion in ruins, I wonder why has God abandoned us? Then I remember that God has promised to break the power of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good people. So may all people honor the Lord our God and judge. May the Lord give us his loving help.
Lord, you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good and to trust you always

Listen

Acts 13.13-52: Paul and Barnabas went to another Antioch, Antioch in Pisidia. Out of jealousy, the local Jewish leaders there stopped Paul from preaching to the Jewish community. Paul and Barnabas then turned their attention to non-Jewish people, and so the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside. But the Jewish leaders kept up their campaign, and had Paul and Barnabas expelled from Pisidia
Jesus, please don't let Gospel workers be expelled

Luke 11.1-4: Once when Jesus had finished praying in private, one of his disciples asked him "Lord, teach us to pray". Jesus replied "Pray like this: Father, may everyone love and honor you. Your kingdom come. Thank you for enough food for today. Forgive us as we forgive others. Save us in time of trial"
Jesus, please teach me how to pray

Esther 3: About this time Haman from the land of Agag was promoted by King Ahasuerus to a top position. All other officials were to bow and prostrate themselves before Haman. Mordecai refused to bow to Haman. This made Haman very angry. Haman found out that Mordecai was a Jew. Haman decided to kill Mordecai and all Jews in the kingdom. Ahasuerus agreed to Haman's plan and a decree to this effect was announced:
all Jews were to be killed on the 14th day of the 12th month

Dear God, please protect poor people from people like Haman

Psalm 72:
O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Acts 13.1-3: In the church at Antioch in Syria, the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon, Lucius, Manaen and Paul. One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said "I want Barnabas and Paul set apart for the work to which I have called them". After fasting and prayer, the leaders prayed for Barnabas and Paul with the laying on of hands and sent them off on a missionary journey
Holy Spirit, help me be attentive to your guidance

Luke 10.38-42: Jesus and his disciples visited the home of Martha and Mary. Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened to him speaking. Martha complained "Lord, do you not care that my sister is not helping me with the serving?" But the Lord answered "Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about so many things. Mary has chosen has made a better choice"
Jesus, please bless my serving and my listening!

Dec 3
1st Sun of Advent

Advent means the countdown to Christmas has begun. May the thought of Christmas give our troubled world a bit more hope, courage, strength and peace. These gifts are from Jesus. Even thinking about him starts to produce such gifts. As happened recently when I attended a funeral service: the words of Jesus offered hope and strength and courage and peace to the mourners

54. If we are confident in the capacity of human beings to transcend their petty interests and to think in bigger terms, we can keep hoping that COP28 will allow for a decisive acceleration of energy transition, with effective commitments subject to ongoing monitoring. This Conference can represent a change of direction, showing that everything done since 1992 was in fact serious and worth the effort, or else it will be a great disappointment and jeopardize whatever good has been achieved thus far.

c.f. readings for Advent 1

Isaiah 62-66: The Lord says: "My eyes are drawn to the humble and contrite person who lovingly meditates on my word. Towards Jerusalem I will send peace, flowing like a river. I am going to gather the nations of every language. All peoples will know and love me
Lord, please give me more love for the Bible. Please give the world more peace. Please help all peoples know and love you
My recording of this reading

Psalms 79-80: O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us. If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our  history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.
Lord, please heal any problems in my family tree

 Listen

1 Corinthians 1.1-10: I, Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle, send greetings to the church of God in Corinth. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. I never stop thanking God for all the graces you have received through Jesus Christ. The witness to Christ has been strong among you. God shares with us the life of his Son, Jesus. God helps us to be faithful as followers of Jesus. I appeal to you to be united in belief and practice. Put an end to the differences between you
Jesus, Son of God, thank you for all the graces I have received

Mark 13.1-37: Jesus spoke to his disciples about the future: "On account of my name you will be hated, tortured and killed. But the Good News of the kingdom will spread to every nation before the end of the world. At the end of the world, the sun and moon will stop shining. Stars will fall from the sky. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and glory. He will send his angels with a loud trumpet to gather good people from all parts of the earth. Therefore you  should live a good life and you will have nothing to fear on your last day"
Jesus, please help me live and grow and die in your love ... and not be afraid of death

Pope's new climate change letter "Laudate Deum:
53. The United Arab Emirates will host the next Conference of the Parties (COP28). It is a country of the Persian Gulf known as a great exporter of fossil fuels, although it has made significant investments in renewable energy sources. Meanwhile, gas and oil companies are planning new projects there, with the aim of further increasing their production. To say that there is nothing to hope for would be suicidal, for it would mean exposing all humanity, especially the poorest, to the worst impacts of climate change.

Esther 2: A selection process was begun to find a woman to replace Vashti as queen. Esther was a beautiful Jewish orphan girl who had been brought up by her cousin Mordecai. After the long selection process was finished, Esther was chosen to be queen. No one in the palace knew she was Jewish.

Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.

A temple worker also saw him, but did not help.  But a lowly foreigner who saw him was moved with pity. The foreigner bandaged his wounds, and used his own donkey to take the man to an inn. He paid the innkeeper to look after the man. Which of the three was a neighbor to the injured man?" The leader replied "The one who helped him". Jesus then said "Go, and do the same"

Acts 12.1-17: About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him

51. This Conference in Egypt was one more example of the difficulty of negotiations. It could be said that at least it marked a step forward in consolidating a system for financing "loss and damage" in countries most affected by climate disasters. This would seem to give a new voice and a greater role to developing countries. Yet here too, many points remained imprecise, above all the concrete responsibility of the countries that have to contribute.

Isaiah 51-52: Pay attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

John 6.1-15(a): Near the Sea of Galilee, a large crowd followed Jesus, attracted by the way he healed so many sick people. Jesus climbed a hillside and sat there with his disciples. Seeing the huge crowd, Jesus said to one of his disciples  "How can we feed so many people?" The disciple Andrew said "There's a young boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fish. But what good is that for such a huge crowd?"

John 6.1-15 (b): Jesus said "Make the people sit down". The crowd of about 20,000 sat down on the grass. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all the people. He did the same with the fish. Everyone ate as much as they wanted to. The people, seeing this miracle, said "He really is God's great prophet". Jesus, aware that they wanted to make him king, slipped away and went up the hill by himself
Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to help others, just as you blessed the loaves and fish

There was an evident openness to recognizing the fact that combustible fuels still provide 80% of the world’s energy, and that their use continues to increase.

Judith 14-16: At daybreak the Jews attacked the Assyrian camp. When the Assyrians realized that Holofernes was dead, they panicked and fled. The Jews gave thanks to God for all that Judith had done. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. Acts 14.19-27: Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian Antioch and Iconium. They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas. The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was dead, dragged him outside the town. The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of Derbe. After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian Antioch via Lystra and Iconium.  In each place they encouraged the believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in their lives. In each place they also appointed elders to be church leaders. Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish people

Luke 10.17-24: The 72 came back rejoicing. "Lord", they said, "even the devils submit to us when we use your name". Jesus replied "Yes, I have given you  power to tread underfoot the whole strength of the enemy. Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you. Rejoice rather that your names are written in heaven. Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it"
Jesus, thank you for the gift of faith
