I ask everyone to accompany this pilgrimage of reconciliation with the world
that is our home and to help make it more beautiful, because that commitment has
to do with our personal dignity and highest values. At the same time, I cannot
deny that it is necessary to be honest and recognize that the
most effective solutions will not come from individual efforts alone, but above
all from major political decisions on the national and international level.

Judges 12-13: Jephthah
was judge in Israel for 6 years. For the following 25 years, Ibzan (7 years),
Elon (10 years) and Abdon (8 years) were judges. After these judges,
the Israelites again were unfaithful to the Lord and so they were oppressed by
the Philistines for 40 years. It was then that the angel of the Lord appeared to
Manoah's wife and said to her: "You are barren and have had no child. But
you will soon conceive and bear a son. No razor is to touch his head, for
he shall be dedicated to the Lord from his mother's womb. It is he who will
rescue Israel from the Philistines". The woman gave birth to a son and
called him Samson. The child grew and the Lord blessed him.
Dear Lord, please bless all barren women

Psalm 71: In
you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be
a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is
you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From
my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you.
Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not
abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you
and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue
will tell of your goodness to me.
Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Luke
1. 5-25: When
Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah and his wife
Elizabeth who were really good people, but they were childless. Once when they
went to the Temple in Jerusalem, Zechariah entered the inner sanctuary to burn
incense, while all the people prayed outside. An angel appeared and said
"Zechariah, your prayer has been heard. Your
wife will have a son and you must name him John. He
will prepare the way of the Lord". Not long after this, Elizabeth
conceived, and for 5 months she kept to herself, thanking God for taking away
her humiliation at not being able to have a baby.
Jesus, please help childless couples to have a baby

Reflection on the above readings: The conceptions of Sampson and John the Baptist remind us that He who designed the womb can program pregnancies for special occasions .... preparing us for the conception of Jesus

68. This is not a product of our own will;
its origin lies elsewhere, in the depths of our being, since "God has
joined us so closely to the world around us that we
can feel the desertification of the soil almost as a physical ailment, and the
extinction of a species as a painful disfigurement". Let
us stop thinking, then, of human beings as autonomous, omnipotent and limitless,
and begin to think of ourselves differently, in a humbler but more fruitful way.

the days are coming, it is the Lord who speaks, when I will raise a
virtuous Branch for David, who will reign as true king and be wise,
practising honesty and integrity in the land. In his days Judah will be saved

Matthew
1.18-24 (a): This
is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to
Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child
through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a man of honour and wanting
to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his
mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
"Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife,
because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth
to a son and you must name him Jesus,
because he is the one who is to save his
people from their sins."
Recording

Matthew 1.18-24 (b): Now
all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the
prophet: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son,
and they will call him Emmanuel,
a name which means "God-is-with-us." When
Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do: he took
his wife to his home.
Jesus, Saviour, Emmanuel, we praise you Lord
Recording
Reflection on the above readings: The Gospel says how Jesus will be Emmanuel, "God with us". From "God be with you" came "Godbwye" which became "Godbye" which became "Goodbye". Each time we say "bye bye" or "bye" or "goodbye" to someone, let's remember the meaning "God be with you".

human life is incomprehensible and unsustainable without other creatures.

61: The spirit of
the Lord has been given to me, for the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to
bring good news to the poor, to bind up broken hearts, to proclaim liberty to
captives, freedom to those in prison, to comfort people who mourn, to replace
their sadness with praise. I exult for joy in
the Lord, my soul rejoices in my God, for as the earth makes plants to grow, and
as a garden makes seeds spring up, so the Lord will make integrity and praise
spring up in the sight of the nations.

sent by God as a witness to the people about the presence of the Word among
them. When religious leaders asked John "Who are you?", he replied
"I am, as the prophet Isaiah prophesied, a voice crying out: make a
straight way for the Lord". When Jesus came to the river Jordan where John
was baptizing, John said "Look, there is the lamb of God who takes away the
sin of the world. He is far more important than I am, because he existed (as the
Word) before I was born. I saw the Holy Spirit come down on him like a dove. He
will baptize people with the Holy Spirit. He is the Chosen One of
God"

All the doors opened, and the chains fell from all the prisoners. The main jailer drew his sword and was about
to kill himself,
thinking the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted to him "Don't hurt
yourself. We are all still here". Trembling, the jailer threw himself at the
feet of Paul and Silas. Then he escorted them out of the prison asking
"What must I do to be saved?" They said "Become a believer in the
Lord Jesus, and both you and your household will be saved". They explained the word of God to him and his
family. He washed their wounds and then they "washed his wounds"

Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away.

Tues Dec 12

On
this day in 1531, something
very special happened in Mexico City *** I
was privileged to visit Guadalupe before and after my
anti-drug campaign trip to South America five years ago. Before, to ask for
protection and help; after, to say thank you! And
as I now prepare for another anti-drug campaign trip ( 27/12 to 7/2 ... 13
countries in 6 weeks!) I ask the protection of the same loving Mother! Mary
of Guadalupe, pray for us!
Pope's
new climate change letter "Laudate
Deum:
62. The Bible tells us: "God saw
everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good". His is
"the earth with all that is in it". For this reason, he tells us that,
"the land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; with me
you are but aliens and tenants". Hence, "responsibility for God's
earth means that human beings, endowed
with intelligence, must respect the laws of nature and the delicate equilibria
existing between the creatures of this world"

The
Book Blog:
readings + recordings
Readings are from
Simple Bible
Maccabees
3: Judas led the people in
many successful
battles.
He often said that it is easy for a great number of soldiers to be defeated
by a few. "Victory in war does not depend on the
size of an army. It is from heaven that strength comes".
As Judas' fame spread, King Antiochus ordered
a huge army to attack Judas.
Dear God, please help us put
our trust in you
rather than in anyone or anything else
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
84: How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord.
My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling. Even sparrows and swallows are your
temple guests.
They build homes for their young near your altar. Blessed are the people who live and work in
your temple.
And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in
their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life,
you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple
is better than a thousand anywhere else.
Dear God, thank you for special
places of prayer

Acts
15.36-40:
Some time after this, Paul said to Barnabas
"Let's revisit the towns where we preached the word of the
Lord". Barnabas suggested taking John Mark with them,
but Paul opposed this, since John Mark had deserted them on the previous
trip when the situation became dangerous. After a violent argument, Paul and Barnabas
split up. Barnabas went with John Mark to Cyprus. Silas joined Paul for
his next journey
Jesus,
at your Last Supper you
prayed for the unity of your followers. Help us avoid
arguments

Luke
12.22-34:
Jesus said to his disciples "Do not
worry about food and clothing.
As regards food, think of the birds.
They don't sow or reap, and they have no homes to store things. Yet God
feeds them.
As regards clothing, think how the flowers grow with a beauty greater than
that of Solomon's clothes. God will look after you more than he looks
after the flowers. So, don't set your hearts on food and
clothing.
Don't go in for worry. Just set your hearts on God's kingdom, then food and clothing will not be a problem.
Where your treasure is, that is where your
heart will be too
Jesus, please help me to put your friendship
as number one in my life
