Tues Jan 9

Hello again from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. First, a correction to the story in yesterday's blog (below): the kind canteen owner does not employ 8 staff. He employs 45 staff ....trying to give work to as many people as possible! And the daily wage here, like so many parts of the world, is very low ...around US$2 per day. So I told him yesterday that he is welcome to use some of the US$1,000 per month I will send him for helping the poor .... to give work to a few more needy people.

Yesterday I again did some "field work" to get information to help someone in HK tricked to take drugs to HK from Addis Ababa. In the afternoon I visited an embassy.

Today on Day 14 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip. This afternoon I am due to go to another country.

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Maccabees 9: King Demetrius sent another army against Israel. The size of this army was so large that many of Judas' soldiers deserted him. Judas had only a small force to fight the king's army. Judas could have saved his life by running away from the battle, but he courageously chose to stay and fight. Judas died in the battle and his troops fled. Judas' brother Jonathan succeeded him as leader of the Jews. Jonathan gradually reclaimed control of most of the country and again there was peace for a time.
Dear God, please give me some of the courage of Judas

My recording of this reading

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever.
The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.

Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Listen

Acts 17.1-9: Paul and his friends next went to the town of Thessalonika. On three Sabbaths,  Paul spoke at the local prayer hall, explaining how Jesus is the Anointed One. Some Jewish listeners and many non-Jewish people became believers. But the religious leaders, out of jealousy, stirred up a gang from the market place. The gang dragged some believers to the city council. The leaders shouted "The people who have been turning the whole world upside down, have come to our town. They claim there is another emperor, Jesus" . The believers were eventually allowed to go on bail
Jesus, please don't let jealous people stop anyone from becoming a Christian

Listen

Luke 14.7-11: At the leader's house, Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of honor. He said to them "When someone invites you to a meal, do not choose a seat of honor. Rather, when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there. Maybe your host will ask you to move to a seat of honor.
Everyone who exalts himself, will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself, will be exalted"

Jesus, please help me choose the lowest place

Listen

Reflection: One way to avoid the problem of "places of honour" is to have a round table ...no "head of the table"!

------------------------------

To go with today's Gospel: Then there was the person who always chose the lowest place ....and as they sat down they were proud of their humility

Baptism of Jesus

I watched it again yesterday....an inspiring song for the start of the year: Lord For The Years

Hello again from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. Here is Part Three of an amazing story from yesterday:
On Christmas Day I usually have a meal with poor people, so, since yesterday in Ethiopia was Christmas Day, I decided to do something for some of the many poor people on the streets near my hotel. I went to a canteen opposite the hotel where I am staying and got 6 meal bags ... and within 5 minutes had given them to 6 individual men on one main street. All of them genuinely poor. None of them professional beggars. Several of them carrying all their belongings in a sack on their back as they searched rubbish bins for food. Then I went back to the canteen to have my own lunch, a most beautiful tuna salad!

Part Two of the story: at the canteen, it was the owner himself served me. And when he found out what I was doing, he would not accept any payment for the 6 meals bags!

Part One of the story: Not long after I arrived here in Addis several days ago, I felt a desire to do something for the poor people on the street. "Can't help all, but can help some". Each day I have been giving a little donation to some of the poor people ...and I have been praying that I would meet someone who cared about poor people .. to whom I might be able to send something each month from HK to help the poor people in the future.

Part Four of the story: The canteen owner told me how he has been helping poor people for several years ... e.g. providing clothing for poor people. He is the answer to my prayer ... and I hope to send him US$1,000 each month ....with the first instalment being made yesterday afternoon via a kind friend in HK who helps me send money overseas.

Part Five (!) of the story: As I talked with the canteen owner yesterday, and saw how he beautifully interacted with his staff (about 8 people) and his customers ... not to mention his concern for poor people...I sensed there was something special about him. So I asked him directly "Did you ever study in a seminary?" He answered "Yes, for a while, including 2 years in Chicago"! After he left the seminary, he married, and now has a devoted wife and four lovely children .... and is the sort of person more of whom this world urgently needs.

Today on Day 13 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip. Reports on press conference I attended last Thursday 01  02

c.f. readings for The Baptism of Jesus
Isaiah 41-42:
The Lord says to his people Israel: "I have chosen you. I have not rejected you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Stop being anxious and worried. I am your God. I give you strength and help. Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison".
Lord, please help me understand how "my servant" is Jesus

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

Acts 10.34-38: Peter addressed Cornelius and his household: "The truth I have now come to realise" he said "is that God does not have favourites, but that anybody of any nationality who fears God and does what is right is acceptable to him. It is true, God sent his word to the people of Israel, and it was to them that the good news of peace was brought by Jesus Christ - but Jesus Christ is Lord of all people. You must have heard about the recent happenings in Judaea; about Jesus of Nazareth and how he began in Galilee, after John had been preaching baptism. God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil."

Matthew 3.1-17: About 30 years after Jesus was born, a man began preaching repentance, and baptizing people in the river Jordan. This man was John the Baptist. His message was "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand". John fulfilled the prophecy: "A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord". John said "I baptize you with water, but one is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit". Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened, and Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said
"This is my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on him".

Jesus, please help me to prepare your way, like John the Baptist

c.f. readings for Feast of the Epiphany

Isaiah 59-60: Arise, shine out, for your light has come. The glory of the Lord is rising on you, though the rest of the world is still in darkness. The nations come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness. People from other lands are coming to you, bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of the Lord. No more will the sun give you daylight, nor moonlight shine on you, for the Lord himself will be your everlasting light. Then your days of mourning will be ended.
Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Please give more light to my life.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 72: O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Ephesians 3.2-6: You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery. This mystery that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations;  it means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the gospel

Matthew 2.1-12: Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, during the reign of King Herod. Some months after Jesus' birth, several  wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. They said "Where is the infant king of the Jews?  We saw his star as it rose and we have come to offer him honor." King Herod felt threatened by this news. He knew from the Scriptures that the promised Saviour would be born in Bethlehem. So Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem, pretending that he too would like to offer honor to the child. The wise men headed for Bethlehem, guided by the star. The star filled them with joy. The star stopped over the place where the child was. The wise men fell to their knees and honored the child. They offered him gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. Then they returned to their own country by a different way, having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.
Jesus, help me to honor you like the wise men

2 John: In our life of truth and love, we have grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father. I write not to give you any new commandment, but the one we were given at the beginning: let us love one another; let us live a life of love. Keep to what Jesus taught. Don't follow anyone who changes what Jesus taught
Jesus, please protect me from people who distort your message

My recording of this reading

Psalm 105: Give thanks to the Lord, make known his deeds among all the peoples. O sing to him, sing his praise. Tell all his wonderful works. Be proud of his holy name. Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice. Consider the Lord and his strength. Constantly seek his face. Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the past, how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now.
Dear God, please help me understand how you have been loving and protecting me since the beginning of my life

Matthew 2.1-6:

After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod, some wise men came to Jerusalem from the east. Where is the infant king of the Jews? they asked. We saw his star as it rose and have come to do him homage. When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem. He called together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and enquired of them where the Christ was to be born. At Bethlehem in Judaea, they told him for this is what the prophet wrote:
And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah,
for out of you will come a leader
who will shepherd my people Israel.

Fri Jan 5

Hello again from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. Yesterday afternoon I attended a most worthwhile press conference ....almost 20 journalists...discussing ways of helping authorities stop drug mules from using Addis as a starting point ...e.g. by tightening airport security. Meeting began on time at 4pm despite having to be shifted from another venue around 3pm! Unfortunatelythe internet failed at second location so no zoom link was possible. But the whole meeting was recorded and Please God will be available on Youtube in the near future. Some reports of the meeting: 01 02 (some of the facts in these reports are not quite accurate...)

Today on Day 10 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip.

1 John 4.20 - 5.13: Anyone who says "I love God" but hates his brother, is a liar. A man who does not love the brother he can see cannot love God whom he has never seen. Who can overcome the world? Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. You who believe in the Son of God have eternal life
Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God

My recording of this reading

Psalm 93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high. Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted. Holiness is fitting to your house O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Luke 2.15-20After the angels went away, the shepherds said to one another "Let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about". So they quickly went and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. People who heard the shepherds talk about the angels were amazed. As for Mary, she treasured every moment of what had happened and pondered the whole event in her heart. The shepherds went back to their fields glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen.
Jesus we adore you, Jesus we adore you, Jesus we adore you, Christ the Lord

1 John 4.7-16: Let us love one another. Love comes from God. God is love. God showed his love for us
by sending his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Since God has loved us so much we should love one another. God is love. Anyone who lives in love, lives in God, and God lives in him

Jesus, you are love itself. May I live in your love

Psalms 61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

John 1.1- 14:
From all eternity the Word existed. The Word was with God the Father. The Word was God the Son. The Word was the source of life for all creatures. The Word became a man, and lived among us. 1 John 3.16-21:  This has taught us love: that Jesus gave up his life for us. We too should give up our lives for others. If you see someone in need and refuse to help him, how can the love of God be in you? Our love must be put into practice, not be just words. Anyone who loves God must also love other people
Jesus, help me put my love into practice by helping people in need

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.
