Imitating
Pope Francis
Tues Jan 9
Hello again from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. First, a correction to
the story in yesterday's blog (below): the kind canteen owner does not employ 8
staff. He employs 45 staff ....trying to
give work to as many people as possible! And the daily
wage here, like so many parts of the world, is very low ...around US$2 per day.
So I told him yesterday that he is welcome to use some of the US$1,000 per month
I will send him for helping the poor .... to give work to a few more
needy people.
Yesterday I again did some "field work" to get information to help someone in HK tricked to take drugs to HK from Addis Ababa. In the afternoon I visited an embassy.
Today on Day 14 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip. This afternoon I am due to go to another country.

Maccabees 9: King Demetrius sent another army against
Israel.
The size of this army was so large that many of Judas'
soldiers deserted him. Judas had only a small force to fight the
king's army.
Judas could have saved his life by running away from the battle,
but he courageously chose to stay and fight. Judas died in the battle and his troops fled.
Judas' brother Jonathan succeeded him as
leader of the Jews. Jonathan gradually reclaimed control of most
of the country
and again there was peace for a time.
Dear God, please give me some
of the courage of Judas
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord.
Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever.
The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord.
The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our
beautiful world
Listen

Acts
17.1-9:
Paul and his friends next went to the town of
Thessalonika. On three Sabbaths, Paul spoke at the local prayer hall,
explaining how Jesus is the Anointed One. Some Jewish listeners and many non-Jewish people
became believers.
But the religious leaders, out of jealousy, stirred up a gang from the
market place. The gang dragged some believers to the city
council. The leaders shouted "The people who have been turning
the whole world upside down, have come to our town. They claim there is
another emperor, Jesus" .
The believers were eventually allowed to go on
bail
Jesus, please don't let jealous people stop
anyone from becoming a Christian
Listen
Luke
14.7-11: At the leader's house, Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of
honor.
He said to them "When someone invites you to a meal, do not choose a
seat of honor. Rather, when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place
and sit there. Maybe your host will ask you to move to a seat of honor.
Everyone
who exalts himself, will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself, will be
exalted"
Jesus, please help me choose the lowest place
Listen

Reflection: One way to avoid the problem of "places of honour" is to have a round table ...no "head of the table"!
------------------------------
To go with today's Gospel: Then there was the person who
always chose the lowest place ....and as they sat down they were proud of their
humility

I watched it again yesterday....an inspiring song for the start
of the year: Lord For The
Years
Hello again from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. Here is Part Three
of an amazing story from yesterday:
On Christmas Day I usually have a meal with poor people, so, since yesterday in
Ethiopia was Christmas Day, I decided to do something for some of the many poor
people on the streets near my hotel. I went to a canteen opposite the hotel
where I am staying and got 6 meal bags ... and within 5 minutes had given them
to 6 individual men on one main street. All of them genuinely poor. None of them
professional beggars. Several of them carrying all their belongings in a sack on
their back as they searched rubbish bins for food. Then I went back to the
canteen to have my own lunch, a most beautiful tuna salad!
Part Two of the story: at the canteen, it was the owner himself served me. And when he found out what I was doing, he would not accept any payment for the 6 meals bags!
Part One of the story: Not long after I arrived here in Addis several days ago, I felt a desire to do something for the poor people on the street. "Can't help all, but can help some". Each day I have been giving a little donation to some of the poor people ...and I have been praying that I would meet someone who cared about poor people .. to whom I might be able to send something each month from HK to help the poor people in the future.
Part Four of the story: The canteen owner told me how he has been helping poor people for several years ... e.g. providing clothing for poor people. He is the answer to my prayer ... and I hope to send him US$1,000 each month ....with the first instalment being made yesterday afternoon via a kind friend in HK who helps me send money overseas.
Part Five (!) of the story: As I talked with the canteen owner yesterday, and saw how he beautifully interacted with his staff (about 8 people) and his customers ... not to mention his concern for poor people...I sensed there was something special about him. So I asked him directly "Did you ever study in a seminary?" He answered "Yes, for a while, including 2 years in Chicago"! After he left the seminary, he married, and now has a devoted wife and four lovely children .... and is the sort of person more of whom this world urgently needs.
Today on Day 13 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip. Reports on press conference I attended last Thursday 01 02

afraid, for I am with you. Stop being anxious and worried. I am your God. I give
you strength and help. Here is my servant whom I uphold, my
chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit
that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout

Psalm
104: Bless the Lord, my soul!
Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the
wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink
to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants
to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to
make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the
time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made
them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life.
All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have
their fill. You
send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the
earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

Isaiah
59-60: Arise, shine
out, for your light has come. The glory of the Lord is rising on you, though the
rest of the world is still in darkness. The nations come to your light and kings
to your dawning brightness. People
from other lands are coming to you, bringing gold and incense and singing the
praise of the Lord. No more will the sun give you daylight, nor moonlight
shine on you, for the Lord himself will be your everlasting light. Then your
days of mourning will be ended.
Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Please give more light to my
life.

Psalm
72: O Lord, please
bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May
the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The
kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He
will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He
will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be
blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Ephesians
3.2-6: You have probably heard how I
have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a
revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery. This mystery that
has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was
unknown to any men in past generations; it means that pagans
now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and
that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the gospel

Matthew
2.1-12: Jesus was
born in the town of Bethlehem, during the reign of King Herod. Some months after
Jesus' birth, several wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. They said
"Where is the infant king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose and
we have come to offer him honor." King Herod felt threatened by this news.
He knew from the Scriptures that the promised Saviour would be born in
Bethlehem. So Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem, pretending that he too would
like to offer honor to the child. The wise men headed for Bethlehem, guided by
the star. The star filled them with joy. The star stopped over the place where
the child was. The wise men fell to their knees and honored the child. They
offered him gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. Then they returned to their
own country by a different way, having been warned in a dream not to go back to
Herod.
Jesus, help me to honor you like the wise men

Hello again from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. Yesterday afternoon I
attended a most worthwhile press conference ....almost 20
journalists...discussing ways of helping authorities stop drug mules from using
Addis as a starting point ...e.g. by tightening airport security. Meeting began
on time at 4pm despite having to be shifted from another venue around 3pm!
Unfortunatelythe internet failed at second location so no zoom link was
possible. But the whole meeting was recorded and Please God will be available

93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed,
he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved.
From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world

more glorious than the surging of the sea

talk about the angels were amazed. As for Mary, she treasured every moment of
what had happened
and pondered the whole event in her heart. The shepherds went back to their fields
glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen.
