Tues Jan 16

Hello again from Nairobi in Kenya where I spent yesterday with former prisoners and families of people in prison in HK ...and with a media team and some other special visitors ... a most, most worthwhile day. The media team of 4 men spent more than 7 hours with us! They said that some of the interviews they did with former prisoners made them want to cry.

Today I am due to travel to another country. .. grateful for so many new blessings each day.

And today on Day 21 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip

A simple reflection on Israel and Gaza:
Continuing injustice continues to produce continuing violence

Readings are from Simple Bible

Job 1: Job lived in Southern Israel. He had 7 sons and 3 daughters. He owned thousands of animals.  He loved God and was a good man. Satan, one of the fallen angels, challenged God to let Job be put to the test. God gave permission to Satan to test Job. On the same day, all Job's animals were captured by raiders, and all his children died in a storm. Job tore his clothes, shaved his head, bowed to the ground and prayed: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shall return to the womb of the earth. The Lord gave, the Lord has taken back. Blessed be the name of the Lord."
Dear God, please give us courage and faith when life is difficult

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Listen

Acts 19.1-7: Paul left Corinth and went to the city of Ephesus where he found a dozen men who had been baptized by John the Baptist. He asked them "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They replied "We have not been taught about the Holy Spirit". When Paul explained Jesus to them, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Paul then prayed with them using the laying on of hands, and the Holy Spirit came down on them. They began to speak in tongues and to prophesy
Holy Spirit, please fall afresh on me and increase your influence in my life

Listen

Luke 18.9-14: Some people prided themselves on being virtuous, and despised others. Jesus told them this story: Two men went to the Temple to pray, one a religious leader, the other a social outcast. The leader stood there and said "I thank you, God, that I am not greedy, unjust and adulterous like other people such as this outcast here". The outcast did not even raise his eyes, but beat his breast and said "God, be merciful to me, a sinner". The outcast, I tell you, went home a friend of God. The leader did not. People who exalt themselves will be humbled. People who humble themselves will be exalted
Jesus, be merciful to me, a sinner

Hello again from Nairobi in Kenya where yesterday morning I joined a Mass at Langata Women's Prison where I had been several times in the past.  From mid-day to early evening I took part in a gathering for former prisoners and families of present prisoners ... we were around 20 people ... a most memorable experience.

Today on Day 20 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip

1 Maccabees 15: In 138 B.C., Antiochus son of Demetrius made war with Trypho. This same Antiochus became hostile to Simon  after the Romans renewed their treaty with Israel. When Antiochus sent an army to attack Israel, Simon defeated that army. A disloyal and ambitious Jew named Ptolemy got Simon and two of his sons drunk at a banquet and killed them. Simon was succeeded by his son John as leader of the Jews.
Dear God,  please protect good leaders from disloyalty

My recording of this reading

Psalm 94: O Lord,  Judge of the earth, how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches. The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart, God's consolation calms my soul. O Lord,  Judge of the earth, how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches. The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart, God's consolation calms my soul.
Lord, when cares and troubles increase, please help us to trust in you

Acts 18.5-11In Corinth, Paul was rejected by the Jews, so he spent his time preaching to non-Jewish people. Many Corinthians became believers and were baptized. One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: "Do not be afraid to speak out, nor allow yourself to be silenced. I am with you". So Paul stayed in Corinth for 18 months preaching the word of God
Jesus, give Christians more courage to speak your message

Listen

Luke 18.1-7: Jesus told his disciples a story about the need to pray continually and never lose heart: There was a judge who had neither fear of God nor respect for people. In the same town there was a widow who kept asking the judge for justice against someone who had wronged her. For a long time the judge refused to help her, but at last he said to himself "I must give this widow her rights or she will pester me to death". Even more so God will  see that justice is done for those who cry out to him for help day and night, even if he delays to help them
Jesus, please give me the perseverance to pray each day

Listen

Reflection: God will give us anything that is good for us, but sometimes, like a wise parent, will delay things because the time is not right etc.

Hello gain from Nairobi in Kenya where yesterday I caught up on many "office jobs" ... and last night took part in an Oblate get together with my O.M.I. confreres, including Fr Gerry from Australia. The gathering was a sad one because two days ago in South Africa a Kenyan seminarian who was attending an annual retreat at a beach retreat house was washed off of a rock by a large wave and drowned in the sea. May his prayers on the other side of the veil in Heaven help us on this side of the veil until the day of the Eternal Reunion ... and may the Good Lord give consolation and strength to his family as they remember his generous spirit in wanting to lead a life of sacrifice and service in the church.

Today on Day 19 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip

c.f. Readings for "Sunday 2"

1 Samuel 3:
One day when the boy Samuel was serving in the temple, the Lord called to him "Samuel, Samuel." The boy thought it was the old priest Eli calling to him, so he ran to Eli and said "Here I am."
Eli replied "I did not call you." Two more times the Lord called. Both times the boy went to Eli. Eli now realized it was the Lord calling Samuel. Eli told Samuel to say "Speak Lord, your servant is listening" the next time he heard the voice.
Dear Lord, please help me to listen to your voice: your voice in the Bible, in my conscience and in other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart. Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love
Recording

1 Cor 6.18-20: We should respect our bodies as a gift from the Lord. Our bodies are not meant for fornication. Avoid sexual activity that avoids commitment. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in you. Let people know that your body is not something to be profaned
Jesus, please help me avoid sex outside marriage

Recording

John 1.35-51: John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God.  Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met  Philip and said to him "Follow me". Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth"
Jesus, please help me introduce more people to know and love you

Reflection on the above readings: "Andrew took Simon to Jesus" - can we do anything more important than introduce someone to Jesus?

1 Maccabees 13-14: After Jonathan's capture, Jonathan's brother Simon became leader of the Jews.  He rallied the people to defend their land against an attack by Trypho. Trypho was forced to abandon his attack by a heavy snowfall. As he returned to his own land, he killed Jonathan. Trypho killed Antiochus and became king of Asia. Simon made peace with Demetrius. He also renewed the treaties with Sparta and the Romans. Israel had peace during the time of Simon.
Dear God, please give the world leaders who work for peace

My recording of this reading

Psalm 93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea
is the Lord on high
. Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted.
Holiness is fitting to your house O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Acts 18.1-4: Paul left Athens and went to the city of Corinth. He met a Jewish couple who had recently left Italy when the Emperor Claudius expelled all Jews from Rome. The couple were tentmakers, like Paul himself. Paul stayed with them and they worked together. Each Sabbath Paul preached in the prayer halls,
trying to convert Jews as well as non-Jewish people

Jesus, thank you for the example of Paul who worked to support himself and didn't live off others

Luke 17.11-19: On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus entered a village where 10 lepers came to meet him. They stood at a distance and called out "Jesus, Master, take pity on us!" Jesus said to them "Go and show yourselves to the priests". As they went away, their leprosy disappeared. Seeing that he was healed, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. This made Jesus say "Were not all 10 healed? Where are the 9 others?"
Jesus, please don't let me forget to say "thank you" when someone helps me

Reflection: Should be a basic subject at school: Why/when/how to say "thank you"

1 Maccabees 12: Jonathan sent a delegation to Rome to renew his treaty with the Romans.  He also renewed treaties with other groups, all the time using politics to secure peace for Israel. But Demetrius once again made war on Jonathan, this time with a larger army than before. Jonathan bravely faced and defeated Demetrius' army before they could enter the land of Israel. Not long after this Jonathan was tricked and captured  by Trypho who wanted to become king of Asia, replacing Antiochus.
Dear God, please give wisdom and courage to all leaders

My recording of this reading

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

Acts 17.29-34: Paul continued speaking to the intellectuals: "We have no excuse for thinking that the Creator looks like something carved in gold, silver or stone. God overlooked that sort of thing when we were ignorant. But now he is telling everyone to repent and believe in Jesus raised from the dead". Some intellectuals laughed at Paul. A few became believers
Jesus, please give intellectuals the humility to believe in you

Luke 16.19-26: Jesus told this story to the people: There was a rich man who used to dress in expensive clothes and feast magnificently every day. At his gate there was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to eat scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In his torment in Hell, the rich man looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus at his side. So the rich man cried out "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames". "My son", replied Abraham, "remember that during your life, good things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here, while you are in agony"
Jesus, please help me understand how I should do more to help poor people

Thu Jan 11

Hello again from Kampala in Uganda where yesterday I had a gathering with members of several families who have loved ones in prison in HK. For all the family members it was their first time to meet....and they immediately bonded into a support group. After the gathering we went for a walk to nearby Lake Victoria, one of the largest lakes in the world ... another enjoyable time of bonding. I think that in this world there are not many activities more worthwhile than giving sad people a happy experience.

1 Macabbees 11: King Ptolemy of Egypt pretended to be friends with Alexander. But then he went to war with Alexander. Ptolemy's army won the battle, but not long after both Ptolemy and Alexander died. Demetrius then became king.  He had an unstable relationship with Jonathan even though Jonathan on one occasion rescued him from former supporters of Alexander. Demetrius was replaced as king by a young Antiochus. Antiochus confirmed Jonathan's position as leader of Israel.
Dear God, please stop countries from fighting each other

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.

Acts 17.16-28: In Athens, Paul was sad see so much idol worship. Each day he talked to as many people as he could about Jesus. He was invited to a meeting of intellectuals. It is in him that we live and move and have life"

Luke 15.11-24: Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come to me". So the father divided his property between them. A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living. When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm  feeding  pigs. He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything.

Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants." So he left the place and went back to his father

While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son"

But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found."
Jesus, please help me understand how much you love me, no matter what  mistakes I make

Maccabees 10: When King Demetrius was challenged for the throne by Alexander, Demetrius tried to get Jonathan's support for a possible war with Alexander. Alexander then also sought Jonathan's support, and appointed him as high priest of Israel. Demetrius again tried to win Jonathan's support, but Jonathan and the Jews did not trust Demetrius. Alexander and Demetrius went to war. Demetrius died in the battle. Alexander then became king. He married Cleopatra, daughter of Egypt's Ptolemy, thus securing a treaty with Egypt. Jonathan met Alexander and Ptolemy and was given great honor in their presence. About 147 B.C. Demetrius son of Demetrius challenged Alexander for the throne. This younger Demetrius also challenged Jonathan to fight. Jonathan defeated the army of Demetrius. Alexander then gave Jonathan new honors.

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Tues Jan 9

Hello again from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. First, a correction to the story in yesterday's blog (below): the kind canteen owner does not employ 8 staff. He employs 45 staff ....trying to give work to as many people as possible! And the daily wage here, like so many parts of the world, is very low ...around US$2 per day. So I told him yesterday that he is welcome to use some of the US$1,000 per month I will send him for helping the poor .... to give work to a few more needy people.

Yesterday I again did some "field work" to get information to help someone in HK tricked to take drugs to HK from Addis Ababa. In the afternoon I visited an embassy.

Today on Day 14 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip. This afternoon I am due to go to another country.

1 Maccabees 9: King Demetrius sent another army against Israel. The size of this army was so large that many of Judas' soldiers deserted him. Judas had only a small force to fight the king's army. Judas could have saved his life by running away from the battle, but he courageously chose to stay and fight. Judas died in the battle and his troops fled. Judas' brother Jonathan succeeded him as leader of the Jews. Jonathan gradually reclaimed control of most of the country and again there was peace for a time.

The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.

Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Listen

Acts 17.1-9: Paul and his friends next went to the town of Thessalonika. On three Sabbaths,  Paul spoke at the local prayer hall, explaining how Jesus is the Anointed One. Some Jewish listeners and many non-Jewish people became believers. But the religious leaders, out of jealousy, stirred up a gang from the market place. The gang dragged some believers to the city council. The leaders shouted "The people who have been turning the whole world upside down, have come to our town. They claim there is another emperor, Jesus" . The believers were eventually allowed to go on bail
Jesus, please don't let jealous people stop anyone from becoming a Christian

Listen

Luke 14.7-11: At the leader's house, Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of honor. He said to them "When someone invites you to a meal, do not choose a seat of honor. Rather, when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there. Maybe your host will ask you to move to a seat of honor.
Everyone who exalts himself, will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself, will be exalted"

Jesus, please help me choose the lowest place

Listen

Reflection: One way to avoid the problem of "places of honour" is to have a round table ...no "head of the table"!

------------------------------

To go with today's Gospel: Then there was the person who always chose the lowest place ....and as they sat down they were proud of their humility
