Tues Jan 16
Hello again from Nairobi in Kenya where I spent
yesterday with former prisoners and families of people in prison in HK ...and
with a
media team and some other special visitors ... a most, most worthwhile day. The
media team of 4 men spent more than 7 hours with us! They said that some of the
interviews they did with former prisoners made them want to cry.
Today I am due to travel to another country. .. grateful for so many new blessings
each day.
And today on Day 21 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip
A
simple reflection on Israel and Gaza:
Continuing injustice continues to produce continuing violence

Job 1: Job lived in Southern Israel. He had 7 sons
and 3 daughters.
He owned thousands of animals.
He loved God and was a good man.
Satan, one of the fallen angels, challenged God to let Job be put to the
test. God gave permission to Satan to test Job.
On the same day, all Job's animals were
captured by raiders, and all his children died in a storm. Job tore his clothes, shaved his head, bowed
to the ground and prayed:
"Naked I came from my mother's womb,
naked I shall return to the womb of the earth.
The Lord gave, the Lord has taken back.
Blessed be the name of the Lord."
Dear God, please give us
courage and faith when life is difficult
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord.
Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks.
With songs let us praise the Lord.
A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth.
The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it,
and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low.
Let us kneel before the God who made us.
For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our
life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Acts
19.1-7:
Paul left Corinth and went to the city of
Ephesus where he found a dozen men who had been baptized by John the
Baptist. He asked them "Did you receive the Holy
Spirit when you became believers?" They replied "We have not been taught
about the Holy Spirit". When Paul explained Jesus to them, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Paul then prayed with them using
the laying on of hands, and the Holy Spirit came down on them. They began
to speak in tongues and to prophesy

Luke
18.9-14:
Some people prided themselves on being
virtuous, and despised others. Jesus told them this story: Two men went to the Temple to pray, one a
religious leader, the other a social outcast. The leader stood there and said "I thank
you, God, that I am not greedy, unjust and adulterous like other people
such as this outcast here". The outcast did not even raise his eyes, but
beat his breast and said "God, be merciful to me, a sinner".
The outcast, I tell you, went home a friend of
God. The leader did not. People who exalt themselves will be humbled.
People who humble themselves will be exalted
Jesus, be merciful to me, a sinner

Hello again from Nairobi in Kenya where yesterday morning I joined a Mass at Langata Women's Prison where I had been several times in the past. From mid-day to early evening I took part in a gathering for former prisoners and families of present prisoners ... we were around 20 people ... a most memorable experience.
Today on Day 20 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip

Maccabees 15: In 138 B.C., Antiochus
son of Demetrius made war with Trypho.
This same Antiochus became hostile to Simon after the Romans
renewed their treaty with Israel. When Antiochus sent an
army to attack Israel,
Simon defeated that army. A disloyal and
ambitious Jew named Ptolemy got Simon and two of his sons drunk at a
banquet and killed them. Simon was succeeded by
his son John as leader of the Jews.
Dear God, please protect
good leaders from disloyalty

Psalm
94: O Lord, Judge of the earth,
how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not
hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the
Lord teaches. The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When
cares increase in my heart, God's consolation calms my soul. O Lord, Judge of the earth,
how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear".
But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches.
The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart,
God's consolation calms my soul.
Lord, when cares and troubles
increase, please help us to trust in you

Acts
18.5-11: In Corinth, Paul was rejected by the Jews, so
he spent his time preaching to non-Jewish people. Many Corinthians became
believers and were baptized. One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:
"Do not be afraid to speak
out, nor allow yourself to be silenced. I
am with you". So Paul stayed in Corinth for 18 months preaching the word
of God
Jesus, give Christians more courage to
speak your message

Luke
18.1-7: Jesus told his disciples
a story about the
need to pray continually and never lose heart:
There was a judge who had neither fear of God nor respect for people. In
the same town there was a widow who kept asking the judge for justice
against someone who had wronged her. For a long time the judge refused to help her,
but at last he said to himself "I must give this widow her rights or
she will pester me to death". Even more so God will see that justice
is done for those who cry out to him for help day and night, even if he
delays to help them
Jesus, please give me the perseverance to pray
each day

Hello gain from Nairobi in Kenya where yesterday I caught up on many "office jobs" ... and last night took part in an Oblate get together with my O.M.I. confreres, including Fr Gerry from Australia. The gathering was a sad one because two days ago in South Africa a Kenyan seminarian who was attending an annual retreat at a beach retreat house was washed off of a rock by a large wave and drowned in the sea. May his prayers on the other side of the veil in Heaven help us on this side of the veil until the day of the Eternal Reunion ... and may the Good Lord give consolation and strength to his family as they remember his generous spirit in wanting to lead a life of sacrifice and service in the church.
Today on Day 19 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip

1 Samuel 3: One day when
the boy Samuel was serving in the temple, the Lord called to him "Samuel,
Samuel." The boy thought it was the old priest Eli calling to him, so he
ran to Eli and said "Here I am." Eli
replied "I did not call you." Two more times the Lord called. Both
times the boy went to Eli. Eli now realized it was the Lord calling Samuel. Eli
told Samuel to say "Speak
Lord, your servant is listening" the next time he heard the voice.
Dear Lord, please help me to listen to your voice: your voice in the Bible,

the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He
saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord
my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe.
My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external
offerings. You want my heart. Lord,
I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

John
1.35-51: John the
Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God.
Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus.
Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met
Philip and said to him "Follow me". Philip called one more man,
Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we
have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son
of Joseph, from Nazareth"
Jesus, please help me introduce more people to know and love you

Maccabees 13-14: After Jonathan's capture, Jonathan's brother
Simon became leader of the Jews. He rallied the people to defend
their land
against an attack by Trypho. Trypho was forced to abandon his attack by a
heavy snowfall.
As he returned to his own land, he killed Jonathan. Trypho killed Antiochus and became king of
Asia. Simon made peace with Demetrius. He also

93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed,
he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved.
From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world

more glorious than the surging of the sea

17.11-19: On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus entered a village where 10 lepers came
to meet him.
They stood at a distance and called out "Jesus, Master, take pity on us!"
Jesus said to them "Go and show yourselves to the priests".
As they went away, their leprosy disappeared.
Seeing that he was healed, one of them turned back praising God at the
top of his voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him.
This made Jesus say "Were not all 10 healed? Where are the 9
others?"
Jesus, please don't let me forget to say "thank you" when someone helps me

16.19-26:
Jesus told this story to the people: There was a rich man who used to
dress in expensive clothes and feast magnificently every day.
At his gate there was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
who longed to eat scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs
even came and licked his sores.
The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried. In his torment in Hell, the
rich man looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus at his
side.
So the rich man cried out "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to
dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in
agony in these flames".
"My son", replied Abraham, "remember that during your life, good
things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now
he is being comforted here, while you are in agony"

Luke 15.11-24:
Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said
to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would
come to me".
So the father divided his property between them.
A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living.
When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he
began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm feeding pigs.
He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but
no one offered him anything.
Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid
servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger
I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have
sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be
called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants."
So he left the place and went back to his father
While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved
with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him
tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I have sinned against heaven and
against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son"
But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to
have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has
come back to life. He was lost and is found."

wage here, like so many parts of the world, is very low ...around US$2 per day.
So I told him yesterday that he is welcome to use some of the US$1,000 per month
I will send him for helping the poor .... to give work to a few more
needy people.
Yesterday I again did some "field work" to get information to help someone in HK tricked to take drugs to HK from Addis Ababa. In the afternoon I visited an embassy.
Today on Day 14 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip. This afternoon I am due to go to another country.

The
Book Blog:
readings + recordings
Readings are from
Simple Bible
1
Maccabees 9: King Demetrius sent another army against
Israel.
The size of this army was so large that many of Judas'
soldiers deserted him. Judas had only a small force to fight the
king's army.
Judas could have saved his life by running away from the battle,
but he courageously chose to stay and fight. Judas died in the battle and his troops fled.
Judas' brother Jonathan succeeded him as
leader of the Jews. Jonathan gradually reclaimed control of most
of the country
and again there was peace for a time.
Dear God, please give me some
of the courage of Judas
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord.
Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever.
The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord.
The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our
beautiful world
Listen

Acts
17.1-9:
Paul and his friends next went to the town of
Thessalonika. On three Sabbaths, Paul spoke at the local prayer hall,
explaining how Jesus is the Anointed One. Some Jewish listeners and many non-Jewish people
became believers.
But the religious leaders, out of jealousy, stirred up a gang from the
market place. The gang dragged some believers to the city
council. The leaders shouted "The people who have been turning
the whole world upside down, have come to our town. They claim there is
another emperor, Jesus" .
The believers were eventually allowed to go on
bail
Jesus, please don't let jealous people stop
anyone from becoming a Christian
Listen
Luke
14.7-11: At the leader's house, Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of
honor.
He said to them "When someone invites you to a meal, do not choose a
seat of honor. Rather, when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place
and sit there. Maybe your host will ask you to move to a seat of honor.
Everyone
who exalts himself, will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself, will be
exalted"
Jesus, please help me choose the lowest place
Listen

Reflection: One way to avoid the problem of "places of honour" is to have a round table ...no "head of the table"!
------------------------------
To go with today's Gospel: Then there was the person who
always chose the lowest place ....and as they sat down they were proud of their
humility
